  • An older papershell variety but still a decent producer. This tree is located in one of our pastures where someone grafted it long ago.

I have 26 varieties and none of mine scab. Even my Hopi and Wacos don’t scab and they’re west Texas varieties with higher scab susceptibility. I have a bunch of Pawnee. You get more rain in east Texas than we do. It’s so dry here scab isn’t a problem. I never gather my Stuart’s because I don’t like them. They aren’t oily in my sandy soil. Dry and crumbly kernels. I have 2 and didn’t want Stuart’s. They were supposed to be Desirables and were mislabeled. One of the 3 Desirables I bought actually turned out to be a Desirable. I sent some of the nuts to Tommy Thompson (Pecan Breeding Station) and he verified them as Stuart’s as I suspected. I’ve top worked most of the Stuart branches into better up to date varieties. If your having scab problems you might look into some of the UGA pecan varieties website if you plant more trees. Scab is a huge problem in rainy Georgia and they recommend good varieties that are highly resistant on their website. I really want to try Zinner.

Our Stuart seem like they produce consistently here. Are there better varieties? Yes. The Pawnee here were terrible this year here due to scab. Probably 50% of the crop was lost. Maybe more. But we do not spray. There is herbicide that will help but you have to have a way to get to trees which is not always an easy thing to do. We have a few other varieties such as Kiowa, Caddo and Desirable.

@@MattPatterson1411 out of those varieties you mentioned (I have them all) my Caddo is filled out the best this year but too small from no rain. The small nuts always fill out better than large nuts when stressed. My only Kiowa and Desirable hasn’t split shuck yet. And they might never split. All my Pawnee were a total failure from no rain. Faith is a seedling from Pawnee and looks identical and splits shuck the same time, and most of them did OK but not great. Nothing did great here this year.
