    I love how this film ends with an emotional fight rather than just an action fueled battle, to the point that the last moments of the movie, not a single word is spoken, yet you understand what's happening and everything that Conan is thinking. Such a philosophical way to end what's considered an action movie.

    It's brilliant the way Conan hesitates because the words of Thulsa. Yeah, you can think is magic or something but there is a much simpler explanation. Thulsa is right in his words, Conan went to that point thanks to him, killing his parents and destroying his culture made him the person he is now and after breaking his father sword (the riddle of steel for Conan's father) he has nothing left to belive now. So he is tempted to belive in Thulsa.
    And in the most important day of his existence in which he can finally choose, he kills the second fake riddle of steel: religion. Loosing the fear to nothingness.

    Bas. Poledouris'(1945‐2006), soundtrack is one of the best, 25-30 years,after the golden era of the great Hollywood 'symphonists', like Miklós Rosza & E. W. Korngold. A magnificent score of epic proportions,which deserved,in my opinion an academy award. The combined use of symph.orchestra & choruses, gives the music almost the character of a cantata. I dare to compare it to Sergei Prokofiev's "Alexander Nyevsky",(1938), which was initially composed as a movie score!

    This scene is magnificent. Conan kills the leader of cult and proves steel is still powerful, and all those cult followers are weak, individually and in mass. Conan is ubermensch who makes his own rules and bows to no one, not like those cult sheep heard. Conan even says to Crom to go to hell. He confronts fearlessly all of them, humans and deities, and is not afraid. How many real life humans can fearlessly confront majority and millenniums old beliefs? Not many. And that is why I love the philosophical undertone of Milius' master work. Basil Poledouris is musical collaborator you could only dream about, he gives to 100% great film additional 100% quality and epicness. I love both Milius and Poledouris.

      At least we finally got the full version on DVD. It has to be said that the removal of the princess from the final scenes was not a good move and the way they did it was a bit clunky.
      Also I wonder why they did it, was it because of her blatent "I`m yours, do whatever you want with me" attitude.
      Except of course Conan, who is still morning for Valeria isn`t interested and just takes her home to dad.
      (Though I think that he`s been murdered by that point, though perhaps that`s another scene they cut?)

    • @Apollo5600
      @Apollo5600 7 років тому +1

      Having him take the Princess would explain his Kingship. I'm pretty sure that was part of the original intention, that and that both of them are the "Orphans of Doom." Lots of symbology here. Unfortunately, they cut her out completely. Some have mentioned that it feels a little off to them thematically (if you read the other posts in this thread).

    You know I never thought about it before, but at the end Conan has achieved everything he said at the start was best in life, has crushed his enemies, he saw them driven before him when Thulsa Doom ran after his warriors were butchered and now at the end as he kills doom he hears the lamentations of the women (and men for that matter) as his followers wail... and it's hollow, nothing he burns the temple and leaves, what was really best in life Valeria, Subotai, the crazy old wizard, kinship, comradery, love... without it what really is victory?
    I guess it really is about the friends we make along the way.

    • @jimbobeire
      @jimbobeire Рік тому +2

      Have you seen the scene that was deleted from the theatrical release? The one where he speaks to Subotai, after Valeria's cremation, and before the battle with Thulsa's goons?
      When the warlord asked Conan what was best in life, Conan was not free, and he answered based on what his life was... pitiless combat.
      When Conan spoke to Subotai, he remembered picking blueberries in the forest with his father.
      He was no longer interested in fighting just for the sake of combat. He fought when he had to, to avenge what was taken, and also, it prevented Thulsa Doom robbing any more young boys of their childhoods.

    Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, dass in der deutschen Version von Conan the Barbarian nicht ein einziges mal Set, der Schlangengott erwähnt wird, obwohl dieses ja in der amerikanischen Originalfassung (wie hier gesehen bzw. gehört) vorkommt. So denkt man als Nicht-Kenner der Arbeiten von Robert E. Howard (und das war ich damals, als ich den Film in den 80er zum ersten Mal sah), dass Thulsa Doom "nur" ein Anführer einer von ihm selbst erschaffenen Sekte wäre. Tatsächlich ist er aber der Hohepriester des Set.
    Die Moral von der Geschicht': Guckt auf jeden Fall die Originalfassung, wenn ihr den ganzen Film verstehen wollt :)

      Kian Kafai if Trump doesn't screw Conan, he doesn't Care. Conan is free of all political concepts.
      Conan is not leftist or rightist. He is a Wolf in a world of dogs.

      Yes he is. But arnold is not conan, he is an actor ^^ I refer also to the original conan of Howard if you read the books.

      The fact that a black actor could play the role of such a badass villain was a vote of confidence in black people imho. Nowadays black villains are rare. Though James Earl Jones acting style is in the classical style and transcends colour.

    I've seen this movie at least 15 times, probably more like 25+, and I never caught the full ending until I watched this clip, so I didn't see the princess at the end bowing to him. It really changes the story, although if I had seen this ending, the first time at the theaters, I would have been expecting the next movie to be super great too, and of course we got 'Conan the Destroyer' and it was HORRIBLE. Sometimes I wonder what the penalty was for ruining this epic story on film. The 2011 one looked so horrible, in the trailer, didn't even watch it.

    No magic is strong enough to break the bond of a sons love for his father. The steel fulfilled its last job for the honor of his family. The dropping of the half sword confirms it. Freedom is seeing the people released from their spell and the evil ended.

    Conan used flesh and steel to win this. He used the princess (flesh) as a distraction to the guards while he cut their throats (with steel.)
    Flesh is weak by itself, and so is steel. You need both.

    Very dense philosophical questions in this movie. Beginning with
    Nietzsche quotation at the very beginning of the movie. Passing through
    the riddle of steel. Words can be strong than iron. A critic view on
    religion. I'm not a religious person, but... I see Thulsa Doom as an
    old testament God testing Conan. And I see Conan as an new testament
    Jesus. Isn't by mere coincidence that Doom ordered Conan to be
    crucified. And the philosophy goes on and on...

      I actually have the Original from, of all places, Google's Playstore. In fact, I just compared the two to make sure. No princess. Personally, I prefer the original as well, as I find it to he more nihilistic and, ironically, to make more sense. It's more emotionally powerful.
