JGL sounds like a brilliant friend to play anything with. I would love to see him in a commander game. I like Erika's interview style, but it would have been fun to have a third person who had some of the nostalgia too. You know, someone to faint when looking at that unsleeved Mox. :D
I don't even play this game, but this interview was so awesome! The two of you just bring so much calm joy to this video.. it is refreshing! Came here after seeing Joseph on Running Wild. He has such a unique way of being... if that makes sense. Anyways, great videos!! 🖤
This was a fantastic interview. Not a lot people could have gotten all of the references JGL was throwing out there not Magic related, and shared so much passion with him for Geek Culture. i.e. Tim.
Swooning. I happen to be in the middle of a full rewatch of 3rd rock. I loved his cover of Midnight Radio. Literally my childhood celebrity crush grew up so damn cool.
Joey G. L. is just so cool. So hard to believe the kid from third rock would end up one of the coolest guys on the planet. Btw if you've ever watched cowboy bebop just imagine JGL playing spike. It's freaking uncanny just how suited he is. Please someone even if it's a fan film, make this happen!
Erika does a great job asking questions about how a young JGL went about playing magic and his experiences, where day9 would totally talk about how cool the cards were and know the cards. Lil disappointed tho she couldn't tell him the difference between buried and removed from play. I wanted to know the outcome of that game lol
Omg.. Lets play Joseph Gorden-Levitt, Deborah-Ann Woll, Joe Mangianello and Stephen Colbert (plus maybe Anderson Cooper and other VIPs) play a D&D session together on primetime TV, and this xmas there will be only one present for everyone: D&D
no matter the reason, it's unacceptable. if he was not hip enough - shame on them, if he was away - they should have waited. it's his realm on g&s and i come here only for him!
I feel like Erika doesn't know Magic enough to do this awesome interview justice. You can tell Joseph knows his classic Magic cards and eager to talk about it but Erika didn't pick up the trail he put down
Contrary to that you may get someone who knows a lot about Magic (Sean Plott, who I do love), but may not know JGL or his other passions as much. You could miss out on the references to D&D, Monty Python, HitRECord, Movies, Comics, or just someone that didn't live a similar high school years like him playing D&D with friends and listening to weezer. This interview went way beyond Magic and went straight to geek cultural and creativity. I loved it.
Why put up the other video if you are going to release the extended version! I watched the other one so I'm not going to sit through this again for a few extra minutes. It's fine for people that didn't watch the other. Silly decision!
its actually worth it, they cut like 40% of the interview out but I agree though, wish they'd kept it one longer video (though I understand why, youtube viewing metrics, average length of viewer retention, keeping it mostly MTG based and not branch off too heavily into DnD,. etc etc)
Day9 would have definitely done a better Magic centric interview, but he doesn't know much Geek Pop Cultural references and a lot of the nostalgia of playing D&D and listening to Weezer would have went right over his head. I think both interviews would be equally as good, just very different.
I thought you guys learned from the last video not to put the spellslingers logo on it, since you changed that, but now you do it again? You need better communication in house.
My god, she did a good interview. stop by to comment positively on her interview, instead of typing day9. I like Spellslingers and I get that they could avoided the logo but now please stop complaining :)
btw... Buried meant destroyed with no regeneration and Removed from Game is what Exiled is now... in case anyone is wondering what the heck Bury meant. heh
I miss my cards. I had my best, most expensive deck stolen from me then was forced to sell the rest of my collection years later, and of course got ripped off. :(
"...the difference between buried and removed from the game entirely. I don't know if those are still terms nowadays, but..." Wow, he really is old-school. What used to be called "buried" is now referred to as two things. In almost all cases, "buried" became "sacrifice", so if asked to choose a permanent and it gets sacrificed, you choose and it goes to the graveyard as an action that you can't respond to - you can't sacrifice a creature in response to choosing to sacrifice it, for example. But some cards that say "buried" target a creature, and this became "destroy and can't be regenerated", which is itself an outdated term because regeneration isn't an action/keyword that they print on new cards, not since Magic Origins in 2016. Some of the early printings of Terror say bury target non-black, non-artifact creature, and this was changed to destroy and can't regen. Remove from game entirely is now "exile", and the exile zone is one of the zones where cards exist and they sometimes let you interact with cards in the exile zone (see Battle for Zendikar processors). So Swords to Plowshares now says "exile target creature", meaning it goes to the exile zone rather than the graveyard.
So in the case of Nether Shadow in an old-school game with old cards with old wordings, Nether Shadow only comes back into play if it's in the graveyard. Any effect that causes you to "bury", i.e. sacrifice Nether Shadow, puts the card in the graveyard, meaning it can come back if it has three or more creature cards above it (ahh, graveyard order - the bane of every Magic judge). However, if Nether Shadow was removed from the game, say by a Swords to Plowshares, it isn't put into the graveyard and it can't recur. Nether Shadow's ability also uses the stack, so if Nether Shadow is in the graveyard during the beginning of your upkeep, with three or more creatures above it, the trigger goes on the stack and the opponent can respond by exiling it from the graveyard, say with a Tormod's Crypt. The Nether Shadow is then removed from game (exiled), it's trigger resolves but can't bring the Shadow back because it's no longer in the GY, so nothing happens and you continue resolving upkeep triggers.
anyone get the feeling that his DnD cred isn't as deep as he is trying to claim? She asks him what edition he played and he really had no idea how to answer that. Feels like maybe he hung out at a friends house once or twice when they were playing dnd and is trying to act like he played it.
I would die for the wrinkles in Erika Ishii's nose whenever she scrunches her face up. I made it 0:53 before my ridiculous high-school like crushing caught up with me.
Thumbs down! I actually saw one where they were playing with actual up to date cards. Not using old obsolete cards for no reason.

Joseph is such a huge geek. xD God I love this. I do wonder if he truly did get a D&D & MTG reunion with his old friends though. or if he truly does have that on his agenda. ^^ I just hope that his agent won't stop him from doing that because it is "not in line with his image", and all that crap. >.
Awesome interview, but have Joey G.L on Critical Role next as a special guest character!
JGL sounds like a brilliant friend to play anything with.

Anyone else have this weird complex where if they see the words Magic and Geeks & Sundry, they assume Day9 will be there?
YES!!!!
Yea. I'm fine with Joey too tho.
100% and I feel like he would be really excited there
Yes. This should be spellslingers
Still love this interview, thanks for releasing the extended version
really cool interview, glad you put up the extended version :)
JGL talking about his big black deck is probably the best thing I've heard this week.
it's that Big.. Good.. Black.. Deck
and he's got TWO of them! The second one is sophisticated
@@Sharklops Who doesn't love a big, sophisticated, black deck?
I saw this exact comment on the regular interview. Conspiracy: was it also the same exact person who said it? Hmmmm...
@@biankah It's not the same person, but that means I'm unoriginal!! 😩😩😩

Wow, great interview, such a cool guy.
GET HIS ASS ON CRITICAL ROLE!
I love this geeking out!!! So much smiles and nostalgia. Onslaught was the edition I got started with.
AMAZING interview, Joseph rocks!
Joey G. L. is just so cool. So hard to believe the kid from third rock would end up one of the coolest guys on the planet.

As if i needed more reasons to love Joseph Gordon-Levitt. @10:55 literally teared up too
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is such a truly excellent human.
He just seems like a really cool guy. Would totally play dnd/magic with over a a few beers
Although it would be really fun to see JGL and Day9 geek out together it's an excellent interview!
DO MORE OF THESE.
Thanks, that was cool! :)

Awesome, I hope Joey GL had his Magic reunion with his childhood friends
Yep i almost forgot about the d10+d6 combo for rolls. Great vid.
Joseph NEEDS to be on Game Knights!!!!! It would be FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!
The thumbnail says Spellslingers, but Day9 is conspicuously absent :(
Dude, awesome video
i just literally finished rewatching inception
Great ending... always a big fan of Joey

yo. Spell slingers. Vs this guy. We need to see His 2 Black decks fight!
Day9 should've done this interview
Day9 would have definitely done a better Magic centric interview, but he doesn't know much Geek Pop Cultural references and a lot of the nostalgia of playing D&D and listening to Weezer would have went right over his head. I think both interviews would be equally as good, just very different.

There's no complaining on the Interwebs. You're making that up.
**cough**
Am I the only one that's completely triggered by cards being upside down in a deck?
It drives me crazy as well. However I also have issue with land cards needing to be the same art as it feels untidy if its not.
Top quality spellslingers content!
I wonder which side of the argument he was on with the Buried vs. Removed from Game argument? ;-) I tend to think he was right, as well, though. heh

Who wants JGL to write the MTG movies, should they ever move forward with that? I would watch the crap out of those.
"Whats in the box?! whats in the booox??!!"
I started playing mtg in 97 when pizza hut incorporated it into their deals
This is not the show spellslingers, quit randomly slapping logos on things
@@DelPlays It's in the thumbnail

Needs Day9
Shame they never got him as a guest on Critical Role.
I see a thumbnail that says spellslingers and no day[9]? Bull shit..
Should have left this extra stuff in the original, be damned if its over 25minutes, this isnt TV
The Ice Age art of Dark Ritual and Icy sucked so he had a good reason to be pissed. Ice Age Icy was some kind of weird gutted accordion, maybe?

With all the talk about big black decks, you'd think I was watching a video for more "adult" viewers. athankyou I'll see myself out..
