Helpful, thank you. I'm looking for ways to attach a pine frame made out of 2x4's to a half inch plywood sheet (12x24"). Most people use a Ryobi brad nailer..because they're quick and easy, but they're a little expensive. Hammer and nails...I won't manage that - once my work orders increase. Note to self: 1) Use 3 mm drill bit to drill pilot holes into wood project to guide 4mm screws. 2) Use 8mm drill bit afterwards to drill countersink. Be careful to check the countersink hole is large enough to allow the head of the screw to sit flush inside wood project. 3) Thereafter, drill in 4mm screws which should now fit in well inside wood piece with enough crater at the top due to drilling a countersink 4) Apply wood filler to cover up screws with a finished look.
Hi Ikram Thank you for your feedback, one more thing, the piece being screwed down should have a 4 mm hole drilled through it to allow the screw to pass freely and the piece under it a 2.5 or 3 mm hole to prevent splitting ,this will ensure a tight joint. Have a good weekend David
Nice video! Maybe you should mention that if you make deeper countersink then you can hide the screws with wood glue and dowels. And what I studied from my mistakes: If you haven’t got countersink drill and you want to hide the screws… If you drill near to the (horizontal board) end then be extremly careful because the drill can chip the wood extremely easy.
Some never do of course, but I'm still pretty amazed. I think it has more to do with fear of failure or perhaps having been so lucky to have always having someone else around to do these things for them. My Mrs. doesn't know a screwdriver from a potato peeler.
Going to be making a lot of corners, I never thought of drawing a line on top of the board for width before screwing in the nail. Much asker. If you know what I mean. Thank you.
I love this. I want to make a raised garden bed and I never knew about the counter sink bits. I would have just had screw heads sticking out assuming that would be the best I could do. Thanks!! Following...
Oh hey thanks a ton from San Francisco! 😁 I'm a newbie at all of this and you did a great job at explaining this. 😊 My Guinea pigs are getting a great big pen built (they say thanks too! ;)
This type of joint is acceptable for quick works, but either screw in at an angle or use a pocket hole for more permanent and structural holds. Think of a bundle of straws and a screw going in and cutting everything - the will work their way out when the wood changes due to weathering and repeated shear and/or draw forces. For hardwood, pilot both pieces. Also consider using a drill motor for the final drive unless it's like 3 inch hole and you have no choice. Impacts should only be reserved for lags, extra long screws or sheet metal no matter how much you are tempted. People get weirded out looking at me putting deck boards on with drills, counter sinking the holes and even using a drill to drive a self drilling screw. 3 years later, my boards are solid as a rock while theirs is starting to split at the heads and extending cracks on both pieces.
Hi Carl ,Thank you for your valuable input, I agree with you entirely, this video is aimed at people who are new to Woodworking and want to get started, I hope this will lead them to learning more advanced techniques and adding tools as they can, I am sure your decks are superior to most! And your lucky clients benefit no end ,Thanks again Happy Woodworking David
u explain the basics very clearly . one thing i cant get is tht , the lenght of the drill bit barely went into the other peice of wood , like in previous nail video you said the nail should go about half inside the other peice of wood.
Hi Jahanzeb sorry if I wasn’t clear, in soft woods like pine it’s usually enough to drill a hole in the “top”piece the size of your screw then with an electric screw driver drive the screw in, like in the nail video so about 2cm catches in the “bottom “ piece. In hard wood and to prevent spitting thin materials you will need to drill a smaller hole in the “bottom “ piece I hope that this helps Take Care David
Hi Mariana Go for it you can do it!!! Its not so complicated Take your time enjoy the process don’t rush, Take measurements and make a sketch, don’t forget to take the thickness of wood into account Happy Woodworking David
I want make a frame with 2x2 wood. Should I use 2 screws or 1 screw for each corner? Not sure if 1 screw will keep the wood from twisting. Enjoy your video, nice and straightforward. I don't have all the tools, just circular saw and some drills. Cheers!
Hi if you’re talking in inches 2 screws If cm 1 screw but drill a hole of 2.5mm through both pieces then enlarge the hole to4mm in the top piece and counter sink put a little glue to help prevent twisting and use a 4mm diameter 40mm long screw Hope that helps Happy Woodworking David
Hi Sunshine, generally i countersink the screw heads a fraction below the surface of the wood so i can sand the wood without scratching the nickel off the screw head, sometimes i want to cover the screw head with a filler so i sink it a couple of millimeters deeper. I hop this helps you ,Happy Woodworking David
Hi Patrick thanks for your input, my aim as i think you appreciate is just to encourage total beginners to give it a go and build something after that they can hone their skills.Happy woodworking David
Hi Stephanie, I would say you need a minimum of 15mm catching the mating piece so ...27 plus 15 equals 42 mm rounded up to 45mm screws that woul be the minimum length 50mm would add more strength Screws also come in different diameters i use 4mm diameter for cabinets and 5mm for door frames and 6mm for pergolas and decks good luck with your project Happy Woodworking David
You know David, you could do an entire series of video about all manner of tools people have sitting about collecting dust simply because they're terrified of messing things up, very basic everyday around the house projects and such. I've thought about it with things in the kitchen they never use or attempt to make, bicuits, breads, soups and so on. I'd venture to guess there are people who have never tasted homemade food.
Hi the hole drilled in the top board should be the same diameter as the screw in soft wood this is usually enough if you encounter splitting drill a smaller hole in the boar you are connecting to. For example 4 mm screw top board 4mm hole connecting board 2.5 mm hole I hope that helps you best wishes David
You made this very simple thanks! Would a join like this on a 70x60cm frame like you’ve made, maybe with a couple of additional supports across the middle be strong enough to support a light table top that hinges from the front on a rachet attached to the back inside edge of the frame (to create a tilting draughtsman/drawing table) be strong enough? Or would I need to look at reinforcing the corners with mitred…triangle bits (not sure how else to explain that ha!) or make it using some other method entirely? As it won’t really be very visible and I have limited tools and patience I’m looking to just keep it as simple as possible.
This seems simple enough, I would like to make a frame like this to add to a poster or picture frame and even though I've measured, and even just laid the boards on the frame and marked them, by the time I drill these boards together like this, they end up not being square and the holes on the picture frame never match afterward. Any advice for that?
Cari Day Hi it’s totally normal to be afraid to make mistakes don’t let it limit you, work with recycled or cheap wood to begin with then each mistake becomes a valuble lesson make practice cuts on scraps no such thing as a mistake! Only lessons to be learned .an old carpenter once said to me a good carpenter knows how to fix his mistakes and move forward we are only human and we all make mistakes David
Tangobayus thank you for your input ,a dowel across the grain would indeed strengthen a simple butt joint by giving the screw something to hold rather than end grain ,great tactic!! Look forward to hearing more from you Happy Woodworking David

@@RusticDavid thank you!
Loving this guy thanks iam learning heaps
Hi Emma im really happy to hear you are learning something new there’s plenty more on my channel and i try to upload weekly Have a great weekend David
You know David, you could do an entire series of video about all manner of tools people have sitting about collecting dust simply because they're terrified of messing things up, very basic everyday around the house projects and such.
I've thought about it with things in the kitchen they never use or attempt to make, bicuits, breads, soups and so on. I'd venture to guess there are people who have never tasted homemade food.
martino amello nice idea thanks I like it
What's the size relationship of the drill bit and the screw? Should the bit be smaller?
Hi the hole drilled in the top board should be the same diameter as the screw in soft wood this is usually enough if you encounter splitting drill a smaller hole in the boar you are connecting to.
For example 4 mm screw top board 4mm hole connecting board 2.5 mm hole
I hope that helps you best wishes David
You made this very simple thanks! Would a join like this on a 70x60cm frame like you’ve made, maybe with a couple of additional supports across the middle be strong enough to support a light table top that hinges from the front on a rachet attached to the back inside edge of the frame (to create a tilting draughtsman/drawing table) be strong enough? Or would I need to look at reinforcing the corners with mitred…triangle bits (not sure how else to explain that ha!) or make it using some other method entirely? As it won’t really be very visible and I have limited tools and patience I’m looking to just keep it as simple as possible.
Hi I’m not sure I get the whole picture, is the frame laying horizontal? 70x60 with the table top on it? Does it have legs?
Thank you this is easy to understand
Thanks man youre my hero
My pleasure, good luck with your project, have a great day David
Thanks David!
This seems simple enough, I would like to make a frame like this to add to a poster or picture frame and even though I've measured, and even just laid the boards on the frame and marked them, by the time I drill these boards together like this, they end up not being square and the holes on the picture frame never match afterward. Any advice for that?
Thanks for this idea.
Would you please post the video about the difference between countersink and ordinary drill bits?
Hi Cari Day that’s a good topic ! Thanks for the request I will make that video. What country do yo watch from? Happy Woodworking David
@@RusticDavid USA, sir! I'm just getting into wood working, power tools, staining, etc.. and really worried Im going to do something wrong! :)
Awesome for a guy like me. That doesn’t do wood work. Mahalo
Thanks Jonathan, glad you liked it Have a great week
great presentation
Hi m m thanks for watching Happy Woodworking David
You are right sir..pratice makes perfect.
Certainly does!! Happy Woodworking and good is good enough perfect will come but make stuff its great practice David
Torx screws is the way to go. Posi drive / Phillips head screws will cam out and round the head.
You can also strengthen the "receiving" board by drilling a hole and putting in a dowel to avoid depending on end grain to hold the screw.
Tangobayus thank you for your input ,a dowel across the grain would indeed strengthen a simple butt joint by giving the screw something to hold rather than end grain ,great tactic!! Look forward to hearing more from you Happy Woodworking David
How does one do that?
