Also, for me Stormblood is lower than ARR in terms of enjoyability. After Tom finishes, you guys should watch 2 things. There is a FFXIV show called Father of Light, it's a nice warm fuzzy show, and then watch the end of 1.0, basically any "documentary" or re-telling of the event is good. Also, after you're both caught up, Larryzaur's videos will provide some great laughs, especially his Basically Series where he goes through the different jobs.
After nearly 25 years of online-gaming friendship, my friends go, "we play games sometimes," as life has gotten in the way of 24 hour binges of gaming.
Never too old to start something you love. Started my first Final Fantasy game last year at age 45, and started FF14 about 4 months ago. Right now I'm in Heavensward, not quite as far as Tom, and I'm having a blast! Loved hearing about Tom's perspectives as a sprout...you've got yourself a new subscriber. Good luck on your journey, fellow Warriors of Light!
**No Spoilers** The 24 man raid content for ARR will make a whole lot more sense much later and I think it not being fun for you is because of how much that content sucks playing as a Black Mage (that was my first job too). The mechanics in those raids are not very conducive to BLM cast times and even slide casting in them is tedious because you have such a small slide cast window at lvl 50-60. Glad you're sticking with it, the story is truly the center piece of FFXIV which is very unique for any MMO being so story focused. GLHF Warrior of Light.
So excited to see you back, and I’m excited for Tom’s journey. Shadowbringers and Endwalker are peak FFXIV content, and I’ll put that story up against any media (books or films) in terms of craftsmanship.
Welcome back! I was just thinking the other day about how I haven't seen one of your videos pop up in a while! Glad to hear your husband now has the same affliction as the rest of us 🤣
I would definitely suggest splitting up patch quests over a few days just to help avoid burn out. Try some side content between them. Raids, alliance raids, trials, Hildibrand. They're a lot better when you're not forced to in the middle of the story. Doing the ARR 8-man raids is also suggested and you can just unsynch that to et through the story.
This is so cool. Enjoy the journey, Tom. I’m in my 40s and started playing shortly before Endwalker came out. Since finishing Dawntrail, I’ve stepped into end-game raiding for the first time. You know what? Black mage is one of the only jobs I haven’t really leveled because I find it so difficult. Maybe I’ll give it another go. Heather I also relate to your healer-anxiety, it’s normal to feel that weight of responsibility, but tanks and DPS have responsibilities too :P
Great video and welcome back! The short talk of Chrono Trigger really takes me back; even though it was only spring of last year that I played it for the first time. I've owned it for years before from a sale but finally decided to play it when I got my Steam Deck; and it soon became the first game I beat on that system. I think the story took me about 30 hours across one week. I was so hooked by that game
When I started playing the game I had so much anxiety about doing content with other people that I almost quit. One thing that helped me a lot when with feeling overwhelmed was watching guides about the upcoming trials/raids and the classes I was leveling. Doing the content with friends also helped immensely. The good thing is, you will get more comfortable with the game as you go on as long as you make the effort to do so. I used to get panic attacks when queueing simple dungeons and now I do savage raids blind! The crystal tower run might have turned you off (understandable since people rush those like crazy) but I would definitely recommend doing the optional raids and trials since they add a lot to the overall lore of the world and the main story. I hope Tom enjoys the rest of his journey. And as a healer main, I hope Heather finds the joy in being a healer!
I'm subscribed to Tom's channel and I love Final Fantasy (14 and the rest) so UA-cam did the right thing and made sure I found this video. I look forward to the healing video!
So I also recently tried ifrit with duty support as a blackmage and yup it's difficult. The issue there is you need to actually do the mechanics, and be decent at the mechanics because the NPCs don't do enough dps for you not to worry about mechanics like it usually works when doing it with other people. They do technically tell you what to do but paying attention to that while everything is going on, and on top of that playing a blackmage and not being able to move well is a pain
11:20 So to clarify, they did do that, and they changed it for a reason Its like Mega mega important story wise for one of the future expansions, so they retroactively made it required to not only Show that this content is available but also make the story payoff make more sense. If you know you know, cause its worth it
@@tombuck Ok fair enough, you're not wrong we do bulldoze those raids cause no one wants to be in there for longer than 20 min Onward though they get fun and enjoyable, even if one series did get incredibly forgotten
HEATHER!!! I was literally just thinking about you the other day and wondering if you'd ever make a return to making FFXIV content. The smile I got on my face when I saw you'd gotten Tom into it too ^_^ Welcome to Eorzea, dude!! Glad you're enjoying it so far. And kudos to choosing to main as Black Mage, that's brave... I have barely touched it myself as it was confusing as hell. I tend to only really play it around October when I feel like taking a temporary break from roleplaying as a Magical Girl to roleplay as a Witch. I've just recently started getting more into it again after taking a long break myself, I came back for each post-Endwalker patch, but beyond that, barely touched it since. Been slowly working my way through Dawntrail, and I've just started an Alt character to re-run the MSQ with and roleplay as Myself this time for funsies. Welcome back to XIV, and welcome Tom in general ^_^
Great video! Looking forward to seeing his journey, as well as having the two of you play through the later expansions. I'm sure you can convince him to have a blast with the Raid stories when he gets to Eden, Shadows of Mhach or Pandaemonium :D
I hope as you play especially ShB and EW to do recap videos about your thoughts of the story, predictions, feels/vibes, etc. those are my favorite kinds of content for FFXIV. Also, people really like watching live streams of ShB finale
I just started playing FFXIV about a year ago and man it was a lot to learn but I love it!! I found healing after a while and now I have all healers at level 90 and I’m so proud of myself for leaning into the challenge and in doing so finding something I’m good at! My partner mains tank so we’ve become a perfect team!! I’m just finishing up shadowbringers patches now and can’t wait for endwalker! If you guys ever want a tank and healer to team up to skip que times we’d be happy to help! 🥰
wow congrats to you for diving in with healing!! my next video is all about my first time playing healer. it has not been easy 😅 and YES i'd love to to play together! that'd be awesome! i'm on Primal/Lamia! you??
The good news is that no other raid is "required", per se. Crystal Tower is only required because it directly relates to the ShB storyline. There is one other raid series that needs to be done IF you want to get some relic weapon s, but those are optional too and serve no real purpose anymore, other than glam and achievements. That being said, some of the raids are REALLY fun, I wouldn't give up on them entirely. I absolutely loved the ShB and EW raids.
Man! I would love to play with you guys! Tom is bro. I can definitely say waiting for Tom to start Dawntrail is worth it! You'll get to experience a whole new expansion together :)
haha i'm sure we'll do a livestream soon and it'd be awesome to do a meet up in game! maybe we can do a raid together so tom won't feel as stressed 😝 and yes, i'm so excited to experience Dawntrail together! honestly though, i've forgotten so much that it'll probably feel like we're experiencing ShB & EW for the first time together too 😜
@HeatherJustPlay Ah to re-live Shb and EW story is awesome cuz you get to watch someone else react to it hehe. Yeah raiding is really great! One of my favorite types of contant. Once you get to a high enough level, practicing rotations on a dummy really helps.
This was my first MMO too and I only started playing last year and Im a very casual gamer in general. I found it pretty overwhelming at first but now Im fairly 'fluent' with the game, I caught up with the story and have 4 classes at level 100 (3 dps + crafter) and levelling another 6 (1 dps + 1 tank + 1 healer + 2 crafters + 1 gatherer). I will say I spent the majority of the game playing along with my friend who has been playing the game for around 10 years and she resubbed and created a new character to play along with me so she helped me a lot with learning the game lol. Shes now pushing me to try doing an extreme trial in DT 😂
ok so since this was your first MMO and now you have several classes leveled, what's your favorite class and why? i'm curious! and that's really sweet that your friend started over with you. how awesome! 🤩
My first RPG was Final Fantasy VII. It was the first in the series to come here to Europe. I was very much against FF going MMO but I like FFXIV and Star Wars The Old Republic. But I’m primarily a single player gamer. In the last few years I’ve been all over the Trails series.
This video is dangerous because it’s making me want to give FFXIV a shot again 😂 I’m very much a sprout, still in ARR. Sounds like it’s a bit of slog but worth the payoff with later content. Welcome back to the internet!
My gf and I are kind of a mirror reflection of you two lol. Sadly I have yet been unable to get her into playing video games let alone a commitment like an mmorpg
they probably could have done the Crystal Tower being mandatory better, like making sure you do each part within the patch it was released in rather than just waiting till you're almost at the end before yanking you away. That said, I'm in the camp that there are other optional raids that could, and probably should, be mandatory (if you know, you know) mainly because they are tied so closely to the MSQ and they are worth experiencing.
i tried to guide him but unfortunately, since LotA is first, he really just wanted to get the other two done as quickly as possible. 😬 it's not the story he didn't like. it's that everyone else in the raids are doing it super fast and he's lagging behind. if we had 22 other people to run it with who would've been cool playing with newbies, i'm sure he would've actually enjoyed it.
