@ArthurKuntsler To be fair, University Challenge, especially in the early rounds, doesn't go too deep into topics. The skill is in getting as wide of an information base as you can. For me for example, the bonus set on the types of chromatography is trivially easy, but only because I'm a chemist. I'd probably fuck up art genres that an arts major will find easy.
@@Ramboost007 Just about anybody who listens to College Radio even casually would have nailed all those. Sort of impressive that the guy knew about bands that were from his Granny's generation. Was trying to make a point about how UC has know-nothings writing questions that should be left to people who actually know what they are doing.
@@ArthurKuntslerWhatever, you record store reply guy. It's not the 90s anymore, nobody wants to hear it. I am a gen-x college radio listening granny and a fan, and I didn't know the answer to question two.
Ouch, this one hurt, I really enjoyed the Edinburgh team. Guess we have to say goodbye to the lovely Uttamchandani! The better team won though… hats off to Manchester!
7:53 I was about to argue that De Los Reyes-White's answer of SEC is acceptable because it's mostly considered a type of column chromatography since it almost always uses a column, but the question specifically mentions separating out a solvent and that's not what SEC is for
The time loop category gave me that ever-so-rare opportunity to shout at my monitor an answer the team didn't know. (I haven't played Returnal, though; I don't own a powerful enough system!)
Thanks Cosmic Pumpkin very much. UC always makes workday Monday more bearable. Manchester's reaction the Heavy Metal bonus was a joy to see. But nobody could complete "Tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in..."?
Thanks again, Cosmic P. So appreciate your speedy efforts to post! Well.....!! That was a bit of a surprise result based on round 1 performances! But Manchester thoroughly deserved their very clear win. They were on fire tonight! I cringe every time UC includes questions on video games!
Well done to Manchester, although they drew out their deliberations a bit too much. Disappointed for Edinburgh, a very likeable team. Great match! Roll on next Monday ! Thanks.
If you'd placed bets on the 2R based on R1 performances, I reckon you'd be a lot poorer given how the matches have turned out so far 😮! The two teams here scored as many points combined as Edinburgh did in their first game alone - I make that about 7-8 dropped starters for ten which is the highest for a while 😬! Still we did hit over 300 and both bonus rates were decent. Given the teams left, if Imperial vs Sheffield is one of the last R16 games that could be intriguing (to clarify I have no idea personally - just wondering if they might do that).
Every manchester teammates contributed, good game. Grady and Hiru are particularly great. And Edinburgh’s captain is very likeable, love that he loves to smile.
Manchester looking really strong. Let's not forget that they defeated Trinity Cambridge, a team that returned as part of best team losers and that recently won agaisnt two strong teams
Did I just hear the word Megadeth spoken on an episode of University Challenge? How I wish I was that contestant during that music round (I didn't actually know the Napalm Death answer. I guessed Venom which was a pretty good guess as it turns out).
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! This is one of the rare occasions where I managed to guess who would be the winning team beforehand. The losing team was both slow on the buzzer, and terrible on bonus questions. After an early deficit, the winning team just pulled away. Anytime the losing team tried to rally, the winning team buzzed in with a correct starter. And the winners were much better on bonus questions. That said, it was a good effort by everyone. My best to both teams, and each individual.
From Allen, Texas, Thanks CosmicPumpkin! For the vast majority of this match, I was dead weight - BUT! I got the last question (opposite of euphemism) right. A tiny saving grace. Also, the guy from Massachusetts, De Los Reyes-White, kept starting his answer with "Is it..." Apparently, he watched a lot of Jeopardy. 😁
While Amol Rajan’s ties are striking, I think it might be better if he wore ones that were _not_ orange-hued a bit more often. (He has several different orange ones but, after a while, they sort of all merge together into one.) Perhaps a plum- or burgundy-colored one would be nice.
@@castelodeossos3947 That’s an interesting observation. The orange ties look great on him, I think-they’re definitely _not_ a mistake in a fashion sense-but, after a while, I get a bit of “orange tie fatigue,” which I am, perhaps, more susceptible to than most people. (And probably other colors would look really good on Amol, in any case.) And, speaking of watches, I was trying to figure out the exact watch, just out of curiosity, but couldn’t.
Really disappointing from Edinburgh after R1. Imperial clear favourites now with UCL in behind them. Manchester annoyed me a little bit with their slowness when it came to bonus questions, felt like time-wasting. I see them making the Semi Final though
Manchester were so slow on the bonuses and spent a lot of that time trying to pull answers they didn't know out of thin air. Wasting time to come up with a complete guess is annoying, bordering on unsportsmanlike. Regardless, it speaks to the gaps in the team's knowledge and the limits of how far they'll ultimately go in the competition.
Get rid of the sreen used for the questions, the guy is forever hunched over it. Have a timer on questions, some yeams take forever before saying "pass"
Yes you don't mind so much if they show some chance of answering but it grates when they just sit there tooling around when it's obvious they haven't a bulls notion.
@@jameshogan6142 The producers have long been reluctant to level the playing field by introducing any measures to prevent blatant time-wasting. It's a mystery why they allow teams to get away with this.
Not impossible that the Edinburgh team's very high score in round 1 was due less to superior skills and more to weak opponents, 'cause this was not far from a drubbing. They just made it to 105 points.
Sorry, but since when has it been acceptable for University challenge to ask questions concerned with video games? Has the gene pool gone awry or something?
15:04 McGovern during the music round is what every UC contestant dreams of happening to them: a music round about a genre they absolutely love.
Whoever wrote the questions knows little about the genre. All pretty basic.

I love how uncertain Senehedheera sounded every time he buzzed in with a correct answer! Another high-quality game. Thanks Cosmic Pumpkin!
19:06 haha poor de los Reyes white “I’m looking like a real bad queer person” it’s okay, we haven’t all read Feinberg!
I laughed hard. As someone who’s done queer studies, I was yelling feinberg at the screen. Oh well, next time.

I would have accepted liquid chromatography there. SEC is very much a subset of LC /CC.
Thanks Cosmic Pumpkin, I'm loving this season and looking forward to some really tight rounds as we move towards the final. From NZ.
I’m from NZ too! Good to see we’re not alone here 🤞
A heavy metal set, finally. Unexpected result overall, but very well played!
"A bit like this program" was very smooth by Amol Rajan.
Well I was not expecting this outcome. Very well played to the winners.
The time loop category gave me that ever-so-rare opportunity to shout at my monitor an answer the team didn't know. (I haven't played Returnal, though; I don't own a powerful enough system!)
I also got the "arctic" question correct because of, of all things, an old episode of Whose Line is it Anyway?. "Backstreet Boys!"
Thanks Cosmic Pumpkin very much. UC always makes workday Monday more bearable. Manchester's reaction the Heavy Metal bonus was a joy to see. But nobody could complete "Tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in..."?
I know that passage off by heart but found the question badly formulated. So it was 'What's he talking about?', which should be unnecessary in a quiz.
Great match!! Thanks dear CP for our weekly dose of fantasticness!

Completely outbuzzed by Manchester, what a fantastic game from Senehedheera. Hoping to see them against Imperial.
"tight contest"???
It was a walkover.

Got to say it's a big shock Edinburgh were knocked out in the last 16 given their performances on paper 2 years ago

I thought his shirt cuff was stained in first contest, but I realise now it is a monogram!
His attire shows clearly that he's of South-Asian heritage, where orange is popular, as is a bulky watch and bulky rings.

Prettyshameful not knowing Alfred Dōblin.
I think the quizmaster gave Manchester too much time to answer their bonuses.
These are some really 'Woke Ass questions' an investigation is most definitely required.

god forbid that a general knowledge competition tries to be more general in the knowledge it asks for?
became acceptable when video games became as large a part of childhood as board games. That is to say, a while ago
