Another great Oscar Moment. Red was great man. Many comics offscreen are very dour. Not Red. I saw him in an interview once where he said he really wanted to win this for one reason. He said "I wanted to kiss Lana Turner!!"

As with Sinatra, winning the Oscar changed Buttons' career. He came to be known as a dramatic actor, as well as a comedian and he performed admirably in Pollock's They Shoot Horses, Don't They and The Longest Day. Both Red and James Garner, who was featured in Sayonara, credited Marlon Brando with easing their transition into dramatic films.

Hollywood trivia: Lana Turner was asked not to bring her mobster boyfriend Johnny Stampanato to this show. That led to the wild fight between the two on good friday after the show and Turner’s daughter Cheryl Crane stabbing the mobster to death as she feared for her mother’s life.

I always loved the movie and can't wait to see it again as I didn't know he won, as did the lady who turned out to be the 1st Asian to win also. That was a great pick that year. Now I'll play the Red Buttons song, "Strange Things Are Happening" because the class in Oscars Oscars don't happen like this.

You couldn't be more right. Lana Turner was a great star, the natural successor to Joan Crawford (who was also a better actress). She was a modestly talented actress but the camera loved her and for 20 years (1940-1960) she was at the top.

You hit the nail right on the head with your assessment of Lana Turner...I'm a fan of hers. I enjoy watching her work on film, but I REALLY love seeing her in moments like this where she was the epitome of a star.

True about Lana. Later that night a jealous & drunk Johnny Stompanato beat the $#!+ out of her for not bringing him with her. The whole thing ended a week or so later on Good Friday. The circumstances of which are still murky seven decades later.

True story, about 20 years ago, I stayed in an old hotel (The Del Capri) on Wilshire blvd. in Westwood, California and all kinds of strange things were going on in my room like lights flickering on and off and strange noises. I went to the front desk and mentioned the strange happenings and the clerk informed me that the room was formerly rented to Johnny Stompanato and that he was living there at the time he was killed. They smiled and looked at me like they had the inside joke. They had no doubt as to the authenticity of my stories. I definitely felt his presence in that room! : )

First of all, so called "Red Buttons", wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name, Aaron Chwatt. he obviously "sold out" his birth name because of the shallowness of the entertainment industry?! Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?!

Lana Turner was a typical Hollywood's product. A too-much artificial bleach blonde. She could've make a much better dark hair lady.
Actually, artificial in all senses, her personality (excess of hysteria), her totally unnatural and talentless acting, among others.
