Great tip your not only a top notch mechanic your very skilled with that camera. Thanks
great Mr. Rich, you always address in depth. hats off man.
This worked for me. I have a 1999 Saturn 3 door coupe that has been sitting for about a year as a no crank no start. I adjusted the range selector following the video and the car started right up. I did have to unloosen 3 bolts. I couldn't see two of them but I felt around and found them.
I have had a problem with this switch forever, The "original" that was in the car, would not repeat, every time I shifted it after adjustment it would not get tone, or start in park(it would always start in neutral, I replaced the switch and still had the same problem, I noticed the switch was very loose on the shaft, I finally fixed it by inserting a shim between the switch and the flat of the shaft, now it works perfectly
How you doing Rich have a 97 Saturn SL one and it's stalling and hesitating and sometime he cuts off I did a complete tuneup so far some mechanics tell me it's Transmission sensors and the other one tells me knock sensor
Thanks for your time...
This man is a legend
Thanks Richpin.
Another Q, If there is No continuity on Drive, will that prevent car from driving forward?
Will this work for reverse ? I have intermediate reverse slam
I have a 2002 SL1. Right now it is pulling the P0705 code. My fluid levels are fine, and in fact I just changed my fluid and filter a month or two ago. It hesitates, and does a small jump when I come to a complete stop. Could this be a good test to use? I am also pulling a code for my 2nd fuel injector. I doubt it, but could the injector be the cause for the hesitation?
Thanks that was a big help
Glad i could help.
Mr. Richpin,
First of all, like so many others, let me join in the choir of those who really appreciate your efforts here, especially on Saturn S Series vehicles.
I just replaced this switch with a new one about 6 months ago and about a month and a half ago the CEL started coming on intermittently. So, after seeing your video, I thought I would check for continuity in Drive and make sure the switch was adjusted properly. Sure enough, there was no continuity. When having my local parts store read the CEL code, the code reader indicated the transmission range selector switch (Can't remember the number). So, I followed the adjustment procedure in this video.
When I get the continuity tone, if I tap the range selector switch with the adjustment bolts loosened only enough to allow moving the switch back-n-forth, the tone will intermittently tone and then no tone no matter what the position of the switch is. Sometimes it has continuity through the whole range of movement.
Another symptom of moving the switch toward the engine is I get an initial "stutter tone". It gives a very short beep and then a solid tone after I stop moving the switch. It will do the same thing if I move past the point where continuity is reached.
The car will start in Neutral but not Park.
When driving, the transmission will not downshift from D to D2 manually. It will shift into D1 manually, but never shifts to the actual first gear. It only downshifts as far as 2nd gear.
After manually downshifting and then coming to a stop I lose 1st gear (the transmission starts in 2nd gear). If I stop and restart the engine I get 1st gear back until I manually downshift again.
Something else I would like to know is; after removing the nut securing the shifter rod to the transmission, how do I easily remove the connector on the end of the rod from the shaft sticking out from the transmission? Mine seems to be stuck. The connector will wobble on the shaft, but will not slide off. I have not forced it off, but I cannot seem to find an easy way to remove it so the switch can be replaced.
Thanks in advance for your time spent in diagnosing this and answering.
Hugh Breese I have not spent enough time on the s-series automatic transaxle so my troubleshooting knowledge is very limit.Have you run it by the smart people at saturnfans.
richpin06a I purchased another new switch and took my Saturn to a transmission shop to make sure there was not something simple I was missing to cause all the problems I have been experiencing. Something you might want to add to your video here is what I ran across which makes it impossible to correctly calibrate the switch even using an expensive Snap On tester.
The original design for this part does not allow any "play" between the transmission gear selector shaft and the plastic cam on the switch. This makes for a very accurate calibration of the switch. The problem with both new switches I purchased at a local parts supplier is the plastic cam does not seat tightly on the transmission shaft. So ... when you move the switch back and forth there is too much "play" in the reading. This makes it impossible to calibrate the switch correctly. I am now using a $10 junkyard part that was easy to calibrate and works great.
So, perhaps the first step in calibration might be to check for the "play" I found between the gear selector shaft and the sensor switch.
hjbreese Thank you for letting everyone know not to use a aftermarket switch.
Hello Richpin,
FUNNY thing happened. I connected meter to switch(per video)placed gear in Drive & had NO tone/continuity. Upset, I hit the top of shifter with my hand & I got tone on meter. I rechecked all gears & when I got to Drive, no tone. I then jiggled shifter up & down until I got tone again. Is this a shifter adjustment or do I remove console & look there for the problem? My car is 2002 SL2 , so adjustment switch area is different than in your video.
Thanx Mr. Richpin.
On my 96 SL DOHC. . I was showing code po708 and replaced the switch obtaining tone as per this video.. still showing the p0708 code now with a new EGR valve code.. but the car won't start in Park -- only neutral. Tried several times to adjust the switch... sometimes it will not "tone" when shifted into Drive on test shifts.. . but I torqued it down and it seems to upshift correctly. Suggestions as to why it won't start in Park??
Whats different about pre 98 models as far as adjusting, i believe the part is the same.
Hi, I have a '99 sl 1 with a code "1st gear out of range". Is this due to this switch, or internal to the transaxle?
Thank you for the video. Is this the same as the transmission range sensor? Or is that something else? Thank you!
Is this for slipping issues while in drive?
My 2002 Saturn SL2 has no Drive when placed in gear. If my range switch has no continuity when placed in Drive can that also cause my car NOT to move forward ???
ok now i adjusted it just like you showed. it only beeps in drive. But if i go to through the shifter i have to go back to d2 then to drive for it to get continuity. If i go from p down to drive it doesn't beep. but when i go down to d1 or d2 then to d it beeps again
Would this switch keep the car from starting?...
Can someone explain me what this switch does?
Do you need the battery in to perform switch test? Video shows it out.
You do not need a battery as you are using the continuity feature of the multimeter.
can someobe please tell me how to remove the sensor. i removed the 2 bolts and 1 nut and took off the cable but cannot get the shift linkage bracket off. Do you pry it off or does the the whole srew come out the trans.
What sensor are you trying to remove.
+richpin06a
i finally got it off last night. i was removing the trans range sensor. It took me using 2 screwdrivers and using a lot of force. Other people with differnt cars show it just coming right off. on the sl1 you have to pry the crap outta it. Should i turn the shifter bracket all the way to the right and place the shifter in the car on park to connect the new sensor? Or should i place it in nuetral(inside car shifter) and turn the trans shifter bracket in nuetral and connect? Thanks for your reply! Im actually doing this for a friend that has no car and no money trying to help him get back on his feet to be able to drive to work instead of taking a bus and walking in the heat. I really hope i get it fixed for him. I've never messed with a trans like this before and I've never done any work on a saturn. Your videos are basically my service manual and really appreciate all that you post.
If the switch is out of adjustment, could that be what is giving me a code 11 on a '95 SC2 automatic? The transmission won't down shift if I move the shifter from D to 3 or 2 and if I start off in 2 or 3 it shifts normally and doesn't stay in that gear.
Code 11 means there are tansaxle code present have you accessed them.
richpin06a It is code 45. This morning I went out to check the switch and noticed a wire that wasn't connected to anything. I re-watched this video and found that the switch in my car is missing the electrical connection. Somehow within the last week or so it must have broken off. I'm heading to the junkyard tomorrow to get a replacement switch that hopefully fixes the problem. Thanks again for all of your Saturn videos. They have been extremely helpful!
C Hax I got a switch at the junk yard for $6 and put it in my car and no more service engine light. Thanks for all the Saturn videos! They are helping me keep this 19 year old car running.
"I've got tone, firing!" - Maverick
Is it possible to test all gears or only drive? Say if there was a problem with it recognizing another selection. Neat test. Very simple and fast.
The FSM only states to adjust the switch in drive.
Another great video. Thank you.
Would a OBDII code of P0741 indicate that this switch needs adjustment? 'Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off'.
I would say no, they are 2 different circuits
fordwindsor351 Is the Torque Converter Clutch Circuit inside the valve body?
I was referring to the range selector/circuit and the torque converter.
hmallett1 and the converter clutch isnt by a standard means of a circuit, its operation is strictly by fluid motion.
hmallett1
It is located in the valve body.
Can you make a video on how to check Saturn 97 and earlier . Thx
I just put it on my video to do list.
richpin06a thanks , mine 97 Saturn sw2 has not been shifting correctly, recently at 30mph it wouldn't shift and the rpms would go very high. On the freeway it feels like the transmission isn't shifting to it last gear. What's your thoughts? Thanks
BornAgainBostwick also it's an automatic
BornAgainBostwick
When it comes to troubleshooting the automatic i do not have much time under my belt doing so.Have you run it by the guys at SaturnFans.

According to my documents, it is the same from 1991 to 2002 for the automatics. I'm KingRex on Saturn Fans
6 Months & now feeling sorry for my vehicle, 2002 Saturn SL2. I adjusted range switch & got tone on meter. Tighten bolts (meter tone still on). Got in vehicle (meter tone still on). Moved shifter up to park, then down to reverse, neutral & then drive again. NO TONE !!!. Will purchase NEW switch tomorrow & try that. OBD code is p0730 (incorrect gear ratio). Vehicle has no drive nor reverse. Unless someone suggest something, only thing left to try is a new switch, or remove shift Console and check inside or the output nut (did not check-no one talks about it). This is what I have done. 1.Input shaft nut torqued at 111 lb. 2. Five new valve body solenoids, each @ 5.3 ohms. 3. new buss plate. 4. New top connector on tranny with new wires soldered and all 10 wires probed for power. 5. Removed new top connector and re-checked terminals, all at 5.3 ohms. 6. New transmission temperature sensor. 7. New engine temperature sensor. 8. New transmission fluid. 9. New filter. 10. New engine oil. 11. New spark plugs. and 12. Car has always started immediately. HELP HELP HELP.
What is the range switch for ?
They never answer.
Range switch makes it impossible to start in drive reverse or first, second. Only allows starting in neutral and park when working correctly.
