It's a bit different and 'unnatural' in the R because it is a front heavy car and understeers naturally. Does it FEEL like RWD when it starts to step out though? I've never driven anything like this but have driven FWD cars and induced lift off oversteer on purpose and it's not quite the same, even at speed on a wide track where there is plenty of run off it just sort of feels like you're along for the ride until the front pulls you out of it.
No, not at all like RWD. It's a somewhat unnatural feeling as you need steering angle and throttle to keep it in the drift and will correct itself if any of those are missing.
@@dacmm So it's not really a tradition drift then? Basically cause the computer to recognize too much steering angle and throttle, then rather than cutting power like TCS would, it helps you keep power down without spinning out. I'm not sure what that is, but it seems kind of pointless and is more of a demonstration of a powerful AWD system than being actually useful. If you want to drift, go RWD, if you want to go fast, don't slide it to the point the computer starts literally driving the car lol.
1:00 a great example of the biggest issue with the Golf 8 R(and clearly the 8.5 R as well). First, I completely disagree with the statement that it behaves like a real rear driven car, it doesn't. The issue with the car, is even with all that smart torque vectoring, etc, the car still understeers and is extremely locked. The fact that you have to be in drift mode (which sends all the power all the sudden to the outside rear wheel) and doing sharp turns for it to rotate properly, shows how the car is tuned to not be fun and just safe. (I'm saying this as someone that has driven the Golf 8 R and I was very disappointed. Having many years of VW experience and owns both a Golf Mk4 and a Audi S3 8L)
Anyone who would consider such an AWD system (as seen in Focus RS, Golf 8 R, ect) a "rear wheel driven car" has absolutely no clue what is going on mechanically. It's literally retarded to even entertain such a notion. These cars are still FWD platforms and as such are nose-heavy, prone to understeer and other drawbacks inherent to a FWD platform. HOWEVER, and this is what you would know if you would have driven a Golf 8 R (or other similar car) longer than a few laps/minutes, whatever. The system is extremely good at inducing rotation on turn-in, and earlier (much earlier) ability to be on the power mid-corner than a comparable FWD car. In general, the cars are designed around balance, with the "drift" mode as marketing one trick pony. The real potential lies in trying to drive the car fast, not sideways. As you said, it will never drift like a RWD car, because it simply isn't one, the fronts are always driven and receiving most of the power. Quite simply though, it is more fun to drive than most FWD cars, and they can be very good track tools (sub 7m30 BTG on NS for example). Lets also not forget, on top of that, it has all the usual benefits of AWD, like traction in wet/snowy conditions. Greets from a former Focus RS and current built-for-track 8 R owner.
I had to scroll way too far to read this. I feel like the car still behaves a lot like an AWD car, pushing over the front wheels until it suddenly snaps into an uncontrollable oversteer, which you need to steer *into* to maintain. As soon as you straighten out the wheel or lose momentum it immediately (and violently!) snaps back into driving straight. The front steering geometry also does not feel like it was designed to aid in any of this. The torque vectoring (I am not entirely sure about the exact number) can only transfer so much torque to the rear end and all you are doing is weight transferring the car into an uncontrollable oversteer condition, similar to what you can do to a front wheel drive car with a little toe out in the rear. The track performance, especially on the autocross section with all those little sprints, looked much more promising. I am not sure why manufacturers want to push this "drift mode" stuff in their marketing. Ford did a similar thing with their last Focus RS and it just never worked outside of doing donuts on an empty parting lot. As a side note: I can't help but keep laughing at all the warnings and errors popping up during the chase laps. Perfectly sums up my experience with the MK8 so far lol
Can you please drive a 2023 VW TIGUAN R at the ring please MISCHA?! .It has the same engine and tune and more importantly it has the same torque vectoring system as well . Would really love to see how it performs and your thoughts on it being such a close cousin of the mk8 R . A tuned one would be even better!

How does the GTI compare to the Honda FL5?
Hi Misha, maybe you should ask Tim Schrick if he wants to show you how to drive sideways😉
I recognize that track from TOCA touring cars on ps2
Golfs are Ace.
When did the 8.5 come out?
Bring back the 2dr Golfs 😤
Oil temps of 120... Imagine that on a hot day at the 'ring! I will rephrase, 125!!
An oil temp of 120-125 is fine for a performance driving scenario
@@TranceFur yes but after a short period of time it's not good and when the computer shuts the engine down as it did in the video it's not a good sign.. When you're on the incline at the nurburgring the oil temps get high! Both my M3s reach 130, e93 once reached 135, technically nothing wrong but the oil will lose viscoty and potententially cause engine failure at high temps unless the oil is designed for high temp usage which is what I use
If you buy one just keep 2 litres of petrol in it so when the chavs Nick it they will only get to the end of the street that’s 9.5 miles to the gallon 😅
I have GTI here in US and I have average of 28mpg mixed, it gets up to 38 on highway easily. I know some performance cars with hybrid has lower mpg.
11:33 this killed me🤣
Misha if U want to control any car sliding u need to go see a French guy, rasso-ouest and do a video with him he as done it before with other French UA-camr nice guy and a master behind the wheel, it will be a super video for u and ur subscribers if u can do it 🙏
the main problem with golf is it has wonderful diff but you can't fit a big tire to take advantage of it the max you can put is 245. imagine if you can put a 265 upfront without any modification for 3000lbs car it has to have 265 minimum upfront
You’re def not wrong but it is meant as a daily driver…whereas a Civic Type R really isn’t.
If you want to drift, go RWD, if you want to go fast, don't slide it to the point the computer starts literally driving the car lol.
did they bring back the og vw logo?
Golf, "take me to the limit" guy does know you can drive lol
I want my own skid pad and a Benny. Can bring my own R
😂😂 instructor cant handle the student
”Drift” mode, more like a ”slide” mode at best. Sure a fun car but I would like more power maybe then the drift mode would be more useful
19:44 Imagine being at an offical Volkswagen event and all the comfort and assistance systeme still making brakedance in 2024 .
2:48 - engagin scwharzenegger mode
If Misha would learn how to drift then it would make you a better driver in the future.
Wish it still came with a manual!
Misha on mission
This man can drive too!
Would of rather of seen the 8R Estate drift due to the longer wheelbase
I got a 2023 golf R 20th edition that I wish I could take here and let you drive lmaooo I'm in the states though
R20 is probably almost the same technically wise as 8.5R. With anti-lag turbo, wider torque, atc..
How well is the Golf GTI and R when it comes to Hyundai i30 N and Elantra N
Not even a comparison. R has 4 motion
Just curious. Do you guys know what kind of gas they use to test these cars. I know the lid of the gas tank it says 87 or 91.
We only have 95/98 and 102.
And you never drove it. With proper driver we can see it is amazing.
@@TheEryk03 we can absolutely see how *not* amazing it is lmao
@@n3er0o it is. go away you hater
Why does the R still have those horrific taptic buttons on it?
