It’s time for a Volkswagen showdown!
We’ve got our hands on the all-new Mk 8.5 Golf GTI, and it’s going up against the Mk8 GTI Clubsport and Mk7 Golf R! The question is, can the all-new GTI take down the other two contenders?
To start, let’s check out the stats. The Mk7 Golf R has a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine that produces 300hp and 380Nm of torque. It comes with four-wheel drive, and the power is sent to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car weighs in at 1,495kg, and when new the Mk7 R costs around £32,000.
The GTI Clubsport is also equipped with a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine; in this instance, it puts down 300hp and 400Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels only via a 7-speed dual-clutch, and the car weighs 1,461kg. When new, the Clubsport cost around £40,100.
Then finally we come to the newest car, the Mk 8.5 GTI. It also packs a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo, producing 265hp and 370Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch, and it’s the lightest car here, tipping the scales at 1,454kg. Surprisingly, it’s a bit more expensive than the R, costing around £39,000!
So the Mk8.5 GTI is the newest car, but surely it doesn’t have what it takes to bring down the Clubsport or R, right? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

In a fan of the 7 for the more recent gen’s but the mkIV R32 has a special place in my heart. I got to drive an 02 big turbo r32 for my first gti and it was insanity. 500whp is more than enough in something that small and a manual trans. 1-3rd gear were almost useless lol.

The standard GTI has a smaller turbo, hence it is on boost quicker.

Well in the USA, the MK7’s are 2015-2017 and the MK7.5’s are 2018-2020. We didn’t get the Clubsport here in the USA, and I know the MK7’s started earlier in other parts of the world too.

My Mum had the 2007 Gti 30 Edition 2 door all black,car,wheels and tints. With a tune, motor and DSG it had 221kw something like 307hp. Was fast back in the day,that’s like 17 years ago. The tuner said the Gti’s were all boost limited till 3rd gear so would always be slower around town or from a launch,the R isn’t. Mum drives a white R these days, think
it’s the mk 7 or 7.5 and loves it.

Wrong, GTi has a Garrett turbo, the MK7.5 R has a IHI IS38 and the Clubsport has the Continental turbo which is really a Garrett turbo in disguise.

12.8 is bang on for the DSG 7.5R. Most testers insist on using the manual version for drag racing rivals, which is bizarre to me as it is markedly slower than the DSG. This test puts all this right.

Thats is a Mk 7.5 Golf R and not a Mk7. So "...back in 2013..." is not true. This age of the Mk7.5 must be from 2018 onwards. But no idea if its an OPF or pre OPF (300ps vs 310ps)

Is it not something to do with the drive train power losses? 4wd sharing that same power between front and rear axles and on the club sport only the front wheels? Speaking under correction.

I will forever say the 7R / 7.5R is VW's greatest Golf. The way they got the interior + exterior perfect is just crazy... a proper collector's item (along with the 7 ClubSport).
Starting from Mk8 the golfs have their power rated at the wheels,so the 8.5 gti might be 300,and the 8 clubsport 340.
Nope 260 hp and clubsport 300 hp max the fwd is much faster at top speed compared to 4drive R its not even close then

That's not true though, the Clubsport is quicker because it has less drivetrain loss due to the lack of an AWD system.
Also, weight has quite a minor effect in a rolling race unlike what these presenters always say.
Glad someone has finally acknowledged the fun the mk8 clubsport is to drive. It’s massive overlooked and actually much more capable than most other hot hatches out there imo.

The MK8 is actually not "better" than previous Golfs. They're going backwards. Uglier, cheaper components, poorer design, and more expensive. Everyone prefers the older Golfs/GTI's and for good reason.
