This was released after Ultra to coincide with the release of their Singles collections. There were three tracks (plus remixes): this one, Surrender, and Headstar (instrumental) which made for a great EP-like experience. Only When I Lose Myself is a top ten D’Mode song for me. And lately I’ve been listening to Surrender which is sometimes overlooked imo.

This is one of my absolute favorites. The song is immensely original. Just listen to the tonality of it - it is highly unusual, and I can think of no other song similar to it.
The lyrics are superb, the music is mysterious, and Dave's singing is like velvet.
This song alone makes Depeche Mode stand out as one of a kind. Just imagine what it takes to be able to create something as unique and original.
This is true art, in my opinion.
Btw - a second listen was a good idea. Their songs become more advanced from now on and usually takes a few listens to get into.

Don't be silly. Many wonderful tunes ahead. Exciter is a much more Mellow Album but I think you will find there are gems on every DM release. There will be a few that you probably won't like as well. But a great adventure still awaits. Another year at least!

I've saying this for a long time... from now on you will git at least 3 or 4 great tracks on each album, i personally get 8 or 9 in each album, so NO Downhill for me, take in mind that some people really want DM to sound exactly the same as 1986 to1993 (i cosider it the best era too) but it's just impossible to do so for anyone, and DM isn't the only band that fits this criteria..in fact i didn't know any artist to date that stay sounding the same without sounding outdated and repetitive... i don't think DM as artists wanted to stay still and record the same album over and over again, they decided what they want to record and release, some choices had work with most of the audience (Ultra, OWILMS, Playing the Angel, Memento Mori) and some have been less afortunate (Exciter -i love that one-, Sounds of The Universe - Love it more-, Delta Machine - with tracks that in the demo versions sound great but not so great on the finished product- and Spirit )... it's the road to decide what is good for you what interest me the most.

As stated below, this is not a b-side Seph. And it does not belong to the "Ultra era" either. "Only when I lose myself" was released as a single - with some accompanying b-sides - between the albums Ultra and Exciter.
Sonically, it doesn't quite fit in with either the Ultra or the Exciter, but I like the way this one sounds. - You hear that it's Depeche mode, so to speak.
I rank this very high among Depeche songs "post Alan era".

Don't worry, later albums are not bad. Depeche Mode has NEVER made a bad album, they do have a "meh" album in Delta Machine, but Ultra and Playing The Angel are considered among the best albums they have done, if onyl behind the big 4 albums (SOFAD, BC, MFTM and VIOLATOR). Exciter is good, has a few meh tracks but it is very good. A mellow album for sure, but that is not bad, just different and very spiritual, i like it, it makes me feel like i am floating. Playing The Angel is basically a darker Violator, not as good as Violator but probably the best album since Songs Of Faith And Devotion, or at the very least tied with Ultra. Very rocky and dark tracks, but some very beatiful too. Great album, one of their best, and the first where Dave started writing songs, like the AMAZING Suffer Well, probably their best post Ultra/SOFAD track. Sounds Of The Universe is a weird one. It has REAALLY good tracks, and REAAAALLY good B-SIDES, and the "digital" approach for that album suits it (unlike Delta Machine and Spirit, both of which take the same "digital" approach), but there are some weird and meh tracks on SOTU that bring it down. Still a good album. Delta Machine is in my opinion their worst. Not because its bad, but just not as good as the others. It doesn't do anything really new, it does sounds very blues however. Still, its kinda boring. It does have one of the best songs from later DM however, Should Be Higher. Spirit is very political and to listen to it you have to take in the context it was made, during brexit and the US elections. It has some good songs, and some really boring ones like Delta Machine. It is more unique than Delta, so it beats it because of that, but i don't think this album will age that well, because of how agressive and full of politics it is. Memento Mori is on par with Ultra and Playing The Angel, so an AWESOME album, it's just that it's not as strong as Ultra and PTA.

Agree, it is a Gem of a song. It made the singles 86>98 compilation album, and Lots of Great songs are coming on the next albums, it is just that they evolved with the times and music style, and us as synthpop fans have a hard time dealing with, and want them to make the same music over and over again.

Depeche Mode grows up ahead of us in the beginning. In the 80s we were teenagers and they were men. In the 90s Dave nearly lost his life. We all had our good and bad times. From the 00s onwards lots of the tracks mean the same things to us as we are all grown up. There are more great tracks to come. I won't list all my favorite post Ultra songs but when you get to Backwards (great video of cutting edge quality on that) and the tune about him going up into space, Cover Me (great video there too), you will see what I mean. DM still make songs btw.

Don‘t listen to the people in the comments that keep saying that it gets worse from now on. They still couldn‘t get over Alan leaving the band. But that‘s their problem. And I absolutely loved Alan and his work, so don‘t get me wrong. But times are changing and DM always kept being phenomenal, just in other regards. Dave Gahan: "I think it's a continuation of what we did with Ultra, but we got a lot more soulful. During the making of Ultra, I've become a lot more confident about my singing. I felt like I was doing something that was from me and not for everybody else. I challenge myself to, like, I wanna get better at this. I wanna feel myself improving at something, and for a long time now I felt like I wasn't improving. I lost my way a little bit there, and fortunately I am very grateful for the opportunity to make to Ultra. I had the chance, musically, to feel like I'm actually producing something that really adds to it, [and] is really part of the sound of Depeche Mode. I think 'Only When I Lose Myself' is like I went to a place in the song that felt good inside. I have to think about the words that Martin has written but how I see them, how I feel about them. I think we all influence each other like that. Even though we don't know directly that we're doing it, I think that we bounce off each other, and I think that's what makes Depeche Mode still work."
