You see Maria was the one invited to smash but Richter said "Sorry Maria you're to young for this just let the big vampire hunter take care of this." Stole her invitation and left. XD
I kinda like this softlock. It's like Brauner is the first villain in a video game to actually say "What if I just block off this area with a door and refuse to open it? Then the hero will never stop me." And for 99% of players he was right.
For anyone that might be wondering, the highest map percentage you can get with solo Maria seems to be 805.9%: • Some hidden rooms require a superjump to reach. • Dark Academy, one of the areas accessible after a certain mid-game boss fight, requires a superjump to complete. This is why solo Maria can't finish the game; because Dark Academy is not completed, the game's last bosses are inaccessible. • Because the map percentage doesn't reach 888%, the secret 10th map is also inaccessible.
Funny enough there is a way you can softlock yourself in Pokemon D/P. only works on those and not on Platinum >Get to Hearthome City >Make sure you only have one pokemon that know Rock Smash and Cut. a Lv3 Bidoof will suffice >Usual stuff no items, no money, etc >Release all your mons except the bidoof >Save and heal at the PC >Try to leave town but you end up fighting Barry in the only way that leads out >Can't leave town until you beat Barry but you only have a Lv3 Bidoof This is why Platinum moved the rival fight over to the gateway leading to Route 209
You can’t. The way Barry is placed means you literally cannot exit to any routes until you beat him. And in Diamond/Pearl, the gym doesn’t open until you already beat Wake and Maylene (not that you could do much with just Rock Smash and Cut anyways.)
@PongoThomas I was about to say "If every pokemon has a non-attacking move, you can just wait for the AI to choose that enough times) then forgot taht you'd struggle yourself to death with a level 3 bidoof before the third pokemon, and most likely the second. Even if every move crit, and every Rock Smash lowered defense, and no Cuts missed, you just can't get through an entire team when you're that much lower of a level.
Incidentally, even if you get out of the Death glitch by leaving through the left door or using the suspend bug, you’re still screwed out of 100% completion because the skipped trigger means the Rampage subweapon never appears in the shop.
If you were really desperate you could proably modify the necessary variables with a cheating device to "fix" your save into considering the boss defeated or resetting it entirely.
So, what would likely cause this bug is not quite that chose to include Maria as a second character, but more likely that they had to. In Object Oriented Programming (which the Nintendo DS uses), you must predefine a class with certain variables, those variables must be included. Likely in coding the game the main class they used to store the current playable characters stored a second playable character by default. If Axemode was added late into development, they would have had two choices: Restructure the entire program to enable the potential use of only one character, or just create a child class of the main that overrode the swapCharacter function. Given that was the clearly easier solution, they chose to do that, assuming that the current character flag would never be changed they implemented no checks for who you were playing as when you start the file, and the game allowed Maria to be a playable character. Interesting video! I definitely enjoyed the slight deviation from the standard, but I think I prefer the more puzzle-like softlock picking episodes over these more glitch-focused ones
Basically, he's saying that, because of how the DS games are developed, the modes most likely have to have two characters, so they threw Maria in as a second character and overwrote the character swapping function for the mode. And, since the game doesn't check the current character (because they didn't think the second character could be selected), you can play as Maria only, because of Maria being the second character and you setting up the earlier save to select the second character.
I think I recall something about how in the boss rush mode or something, if u beat it as old axe armor, it displays Maria as partner, so i think we can safely assume this is correct.
A few more things: First, character switching was already something the devs could control, since you actually have to unlock that ability in Jonathan/Charlotte mode. It only takes like 20 seconds from when you gain control of Jonathan at the start, but you can also turn off the ability from the menu, like you can with all relic abilities. Just another point in favor of this theory. Second, the reason the new game remembers that you were playing as the second character. The bat icon is how you activate new game+, and under normal circumstances, you’re forced to restart in the same mode. NG+ing in J/C mode should result in a J/C file. I think that the problem is that when you select the bat icon, it tells the game to “start an NG+ for that file when you load the game”, and doesn’t cancel that instruction when you back out from the difficulty select. So now you can select any file and it’ll take the NG+ carry-over data from the original file. The last thing that causes the issue is that selecting an empty file with the NG+ data “stored” will still bring you to the mode select screen, so all of a sudden you can carry NG+ data between game modes, which isn’t supposed to be possible, and causes the issue. Doing this glitch will copy over the map data and subweapon EXP, which is how we know that it’s actually NG+ing, and not doing something else entirely. You can also use the glitch on Richter mode to give him Jonathan’s powered-up subweapons, since Richter can’t level them up himself. TL;DR you’re not supposed to be able to switch character modes when you new game+, but you can get around that.
Until recently I thought your name was pronounced as Pika-sprey. When I found out that it was pronounced as Pik-asprey it blew my mind. Also great video as usual!
I played the crap out of this game, I loved it! Even with the classic "charlote" typo. And debatable "game ober" one. Looking forward to more of this. Still can only say Jonathan and Charlotte as aggressively as they do
Hmm, I'm thinking of other good examples of soft-locks like this one. Jak 2 had the a "race to the garage" glitch, if you do the missions in a certain order you get screwed, but my memory's so fuzzy on that because it was over a decde ago.
My copy of Castlevania for the NES doesn't have that bug, so I can't speak to how crippling it is. It is worth noting that because death is actually a grounded enemy, and only spawns scythes while on the ground, (or at least after hitting the ground once) you can easily use holy water with rapid fire level 3 to lock him out of landing. It's also oddly easy to obtain rapid fire level 3 on the level where you face Death. This makes the biggest challenge getting through the whole level on one life, as holy water only appears at the beginning of the stage.
Looks like death got the last laugh in the first glitch. He even has a portal in the bossroom to watch Johnathan and Charlotte's anguish (probabily while eatting popcorn).
Even though I never played any Castlevania game and only got to this channel, because of the Pokemon games. Damn - I like your voice and your videos are always very nicely made, so thanks for uploading another one. Greetings from Germany
I finally played through Portrait of Ruin about a little over half a year ago, and I'm glad I didn't run into the Death Soft Lock. I don't usually skip cut scenes in games so that's probably why I didn't come across it. I do remember being stuck on the Death fight for a little bit.
This video came pretty unexpected for me, since I've associated your softlock-picking series with Pokemon, but I'm glad you're expanding your views (especially in a direction I agree with huehue). I hope you are considering doing more videos on Castlevania since they're very interesting to watch and I'm kind of a fanboy for those games, but I'll be watching what you upload regardless of game series.
AmazingPad I was always creeped out when I'd soft lock or fall out of maps in games. Any time I'd glitch out of a map on Halo or GTA as a kid, you just feel the immersion break, and there's just a weird, unsettling void like feeling in the game. Lol
**turns on flashlight and points upward under chin** That's the energy the game's soul is radiating. It's trapped in media for your enjoyment but little did you know it even had awareness. Like trapping someone in a soul gem, you might think they're in suspended animation or in an unaware death-like state, but ohhh no, they are fully aware and helpless! Story goes the only chance of escape is when the player glitches the game and even then only by switching places with the player can it escape MUAHAHAHAHAHA!! >:3
I don't blame you. It's a sort of limbo or purgatory, and it's probably the closest we'll ever be able to experience that. So in a way, it is indeed creepy.
I absolutely would if I had the game, but unfortunately I've only seen it on UA-cam and such. This in particular is what I was referencing: ua-cam.com/video/Y7c1Sb0eb8k/v-deo.html
Good thing I never skipped the post-victory cutscenes when I played through Portrait of Ruin in the past. Also, I'm definitely curious about that DittoTwo solo challenge you teased at the end there. Will be looking forward to seeing what comes of that!
This is the first of your Castlevania videos that I watched, and I quickly started watching the retrospectives you've done on the series. I'm very glad I did, because I'm a huge Castlevania fan now and I don't know if I would have played the games if I hadn't seen your videos on them. Thank you so much!
I freaking love this game. Played it at least 3 times, love the soundtracks and the chemistry between Jonathan and Charlotte. My favorite duo in the series
Great video man. To think i found you because I had horrible insomnia and needed stuff to fall asleep. This is by no means an insult. Keep up the great work.
I really enjoy watching your softlock videos, and the explanations for why they are (probably) happening. Plus this will help anyone who stumbles on an old cart and hits this same problem :)
i like this a lot !! It was a nice change from the Pokemon Soft Lock Picking, and was much more realistic!! I love your softlock stuff! I also cant believe that a final, finished product of a game has such severe-game ending glitches.
Here’s another reasoning for the Old Axe Armor glitch, the mode was built on top of Richter Mode and the only thing changed is Richter is now Old Axe Armor (just think about it for second)
Every single Pikasprey video, whether it's on a mainstream series (Pokemon) or a random RPG maker game (Dreaming Mary) It never fails to draw me in. I don't know why little kids are begging for just Pokemon videos, because these are just as great. Pikasprey probably has to be one of my favorite UA-camrs because I can and will never be bored watching his videos. Wish he'd upload more often, but I'm sure these videos like Softlock picking take a lot of time and effort to make. So we'll leave it at that. Yet another great video from Pikasprey.

Thanks for the heads up on this game. I just bought it 2 weeks ago and haven't gotten very far playing it. But I know my habit of saving or dying before saving in a new area and wouldn't want to have that death soft lock happen to me.
Oh my god, it's my favorite game from my childhood! YES! I beated this game to 1000% completion, and even did some experiments on skips. Great bit o' nostalgia
Glad to see another Castlevania video out of you! I didn't know this glitch existed, and i feel glad i never encountered it, because going through that much of the game just to have to stop... ugh...
i think this is one of my favorite SLP episodes, i really like seeing what softlocking shenanigans you can get up to in games besides pokemon, its interesting and cool :]
I must say, we as a fanbase do appreciate how much time, effort, and energy goes into each and every one of these Yellow videos. also, I'm betting you will get a sudden increase in subscribers, likely in the 10s to 100s range due to posting another video. I hope we get another video close to October 2nd so I can call it a birthday present, even though I know you likely will be too busy to post one. Have a good day.
I played the card game fluxx with my friends today, and one had the idea that the combination of "draw 1", "play all but 1", and "hand limit 0" would soft-lock the game. the idea is a player draws 1, then plays all their cards but 1 (of which they have no others). and at the end of their turn, they discard the 1 card they drew. They didn't notice that the play all but 1 had an exception when the player doesn't have enough cards.
Anyone notice the floating portal has the same hazy aura Death has during the battle? The portals normally do not have that aura during the fight. Seems like the game is trying to initialize Death for the battle but for whatever reason related to the dialogue sequence break, it instead spawns a portal which it initializes with Death's parameters and expects it to behave as such. In fact I'm surprised the game doesn't outright crash for trying to initialize an invalid object like that, especially one whose mechanics depend on another object. I'm actually curious if this does in fact corrupt some memory... maybe we'd know if the game acted weird/crashed upon leaving the room as it destroys the badly-initialized portal but since you can't leave I guess we won't know.
Yeah, I remember the freeze glitch. I also remember doing some sort of button mashing to get it to unfreeze. At the time, I was not very good at the game, so the freeze only made it harder once it unfroze since I lost focus.
The Phoenix Wright background music really makes this sound like these softlocks are some purposeful malicious thing actively trying to bait you in and trap you forever.
I don't even care if it's about a game I've never personally played before, I just love glitches and weird programming quirks in video games, and this series scratches that itch pretty well.
For Death's icy grip he did evade. Isolation immortal was the unnatural toll, for the one who stole back their soul. None leave the reaper's frightful presence without surrendering the thing most precious. The cord of living severed, the word in the mind, but a final dirge, before the body's requiem purge.
Please can you continue these kind of videos. I love your gem collecting and other non Pokémon stuff. Sure, I like Pokémon but I enjoy your videos with more variety.
I'm really looking forward to your next video on this I loved portrait of ruin. I actually still own a copy that I play from time to time. Any chance the next video will talk about more glitches.
I like to imagine Richter just ditched Maria there once he got the invite to Smash.

Glad to see another Castlevania video out of you! I didn't know this glitch existed, and i feel glad i never encountered it, because going through that much of the game just to have to stop... ugh...
Hell yeah pikasprey, you are getting into my favorite seires, and it's also another soft lockpicking video!
i think this is one of my favorite SLP episodes, i really like seeing what softlocking shenanigans you can get up to in games besides pokemon, its interesting and cool :]
This is pretty neat! All your videos are super informative, and a neat spin on stuff that I hadn't thought of before.
I love the Soft Lock Picking format ! I wish there was more video of it.
I'd love to see more softlock picking from games other than pokemon, this was a breath of fresh air
"Fight and defeat Death like you normally would"
Oh yeeeeaaaah! You're back! And you're soft locking Castlevania?! This channel makes me so, so, so happy
I love the Soft Lock Picking series so much
Another wonderful and fascinating soft-locking video, Christian ^^
FINALLY!! After all these years I can now move forward from this glitch! I hope you get to review PoR soon (along with OoE later on)
Love your Castlevania content. Your playthroughs on Blue inspired me to play Aria, Dawn, and PoR both regular modes and the Belmont modes.
still one of my favorite videos of yours ♡ Wish there was a true Maria only run possible.!
That teasing at the end!
Though I'm a bit disappointed, not much lockpicking in this soft lock picking =p
You should do more softlock videos for games outside of Pokemon. I reall like hearing about this in other games
Yeah, I remember the freeze glitch. I also remember doing some sort of button mashing to get it to unfreeze.
At the time, I was not very good at the game, so the freeze only made it harder once it unfroze since I lost focus.
I really didn't expect you to softlock pick in Castlevania, cool!
Holy cow man you really are a sucker for punishment! I can’t wait to see your ditto video!
The Phoenix Wright background music really makes this sound like these softlocks are some purposeful malicious thing actively trying to bait you in and trap you forever.
Thank you that glitch has soft locked me by accident 3 times when I forgot about it XD
Yeah I've waited for so long on an new episode of softlock picking
This is why Richter left to go to Smash Bros.
Oh boy, a Ditto only Gen 2 run is in the future. Also, great video!
I don't even care if it's about a game I've never personally played before, I just love glitches and weird programming quirks in video games, and this series scratches that itch pretty well.
Thank for making another soft lock picking episode
For Death's icy grip he did evade. Isolation immortal was the unnatural toll, for the one who stole back their soul. None leave the reaper's frightful presence without surrendering the thing most precious. The cord of living severed, the word in the mind, but a final dirge, before the body's requiem purge.
Softlock picking is my favorite series of yours.
Love watching the soft lock videos keep them coming! :)
"The Death Glitch" sounds like something that definitely I want to try
Finally. A non-Pokemon SoftLockPicking video. History has been made!
i don t even play castlevania or mortal kombat but yet i find these videos very interesting.
Good ol Pikasprey, Back at it again with the softlockes xD
Please can you continue these kind of videos. I love your gem collecting and other non Pokémon stuff. Sure, I like Pokémon but I enjoy your videos with more variety.
Yesss, was hoping you'd do soft lock picking for games other than Pokemon
Yay, more Castlevania!
Yay, more Soft Lock Picking!
Yay, more pikasprey!
One of my favorite games. Awesome video my man!
I'm really looking forward to your next video on this I loved portrait of ruin. I actually still own a copy that I play from time to time. Any chance the next video will talk about more glitches.
we need more soft locks of castlevania games!
I love this game, but I never knew about these softlocks.
PoR was one of my favourite games.
I'm glad I had the EU version, myself.
Do more Castlevania content
Finally an upload, no hate I know it takes forever but thanks
