This man has always given me the impression of being a wise and compassionate person. His handling of US-USSR relations helped to temporarily ease tensions. He made concessions, not just for the good of the Soviet Union, but for the world. It’s very unfortunate that it is a naive thing to do in this world. Many people see his concessions as catastrophic for Russia and former Soviet states, so now we live in a world where nuclear powers are unwilling to sit at the table with anything other than the demands they have stood firm on for decades.
They were catastrophic for Russia because of the way the West handled it. Promises made and given at that time, totally and completely disregarded today. Look at a map of Eastern Europe and see all the former Soviet bloc states they withdrew from, now have US troops, us tanks, missiles on them. NATO. "Not an inch Eastward" we promised, but we reneged on it. Instead of truly treating Russia as a partner like we did with Germany and Japan, we kept an adversarial stance. His time as General Secretary feels like ancient history to me. It’s crazy to see that he’s still alive. The way we learn history in school makes it seem like the collapse of the Soviet Union was a century ago, when really it hasn’t even been 30 years.
Why do people hate him? I learnt in history classes is that he tried to save USSR through reforms but failed and in the end he allowed a peaceful transition of power without turning Russia into Syria. You may criticise his reforms but his reforms were actually peaceful and intended to help the soviet people and end the Cold War.
You right! But, in our country some people think that he was an american agent and specifically destroed USSR. And much people do not like him, simply because he failed his reforms and did not save USSR.
March 17th 1991 there was All-Union referendum. "Would you like to save USSR?" - there was the question. 77,85 % of all people said YES. How do you think what is the reason why people hate him?
People hate him because 1) vast majority of them lived better under the Soviet Union 2) his incompentence in keeping it going... the USSR didn't collapse, at least the old one, it was his perestroika that destroyed the economic (and political) base on which a soviet style planned economy functioned. 3) his impotence, fear during and after the 91 coup, and inability to keep the sharks like Yeltsin at bay from 1985 ownards. He led Russia to the brink of an abyss, and then let Yelsin push her over the edge. His impotence made hundreds of millions across eastern europe, asia and the middle east suffer (for example, Iraq war would never have happened). Hundreds of thousands all over europe died because of his action, inaction and general impotence. While it's not only his fault (most of it is Yeltsins, in fact), he has the greatest responsibility for ending, through his incompetence, something that was worth saving, that many people miss today. That piece of shit deserves a special place in hell, for trying to fill shoes so big he drowned in them. In a nutshell.
you're right, it really hate. Don't blame Gorbachev, he is not to blame for the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the USSR was bad, inefficient planned economy that destroyed the Soviet Union, and Gorbachev tried to change it, but stumbled upon Brezhnev's "sheep" who don't like change, and Yes, he didn't have the nerve. And Gorbachev how to blame for the deaths around the world? He has eliminated the block of ATS, he withdrew Soviet troops from Europe, about NSE did the right thing. But NATO took advantage of this and made the whole of Evapo their missiles. It is NATO and the US destroyed Iraq, not Gorbachev. And that is because NATO is now happening in Ukraine, the collapse of, not because of Gorbachev. If amercians wanted peace, they would have respectly NATO, but they didn't, so it's their fault in the deaths of people, not Gorbachev.
How about removing Mr. Pu....while he is sleeping, when he wakes up, he is in another place. When politicians are unfit, you have to remove. @@nick1834 haha thats a fair point. However i dont think that him resigning was a sign of strength. I think I have grasped his philosophy after watching many of his interviews recently. This guy is a consistent pacifist and mediator. He knows very well that a conflict cannot exist without hostile interaction between the two opposite sides. The ending of the Cold War was a direct implementation of this philosophy in the USSR's foreign relations. Rejection to hostile interaction also means he had to voluntarily step down from power in 1991 to prevent a conflict from further escalating. And this is also why he never blamed the current crisis and dilemma on Russia or Putin. He knew that the responsibility for the current conflict lies in both sides' interactions. In some sense, Russia was provoked but it would also be mistaken to forget that Russia had also provoked the West. The same thing could be also said about the rise of Russian authoritarianism since the 2010s, it was also kinda formed in interactions between Putin's administration and Russia's liberal movements. Hence he always emphasized that Putin only acted in response. People often say he avoided criticising Putin directly so that he could still live in peace in Russia. I don't think that's the case, he really doesn't blame Putin. A real pacifist should have a capacity to sympathise with any side.
at the end He peacefully transferred the power and allowed for the first and only clean elections in Russian history. Without his order to not intervene in the elections boris yeltsin would have lost to the communists.
@Daniel Paul We don't have proof that Stalin was a dictator? He retained power through the secret police that was led by Beria, who was a rapist and a pedophile. He crushed dissent and persecuted the Russian Orthodox Church until the Nazis invaded, at which point he made peace with the Patriarch of Moscow. He put those with dangerous opinions alongside thieves and criminals in the gulags, and invaded Finland to steal their land for the USSR's own interests. Praise him for his industrialization and defeating the Nazis all you want, but he still did all these things besides.
@Daniel Paul Under the Soviet regime, theists (especially clergy) were persecuted viciously. This isn't like post revolution France where the power of the clergy was greatly diminished but they could still live somewhat normal lives. Stalin was on a campaign against the Orthodox faith itself long after its power had died. In the late 20s and early 30s, both churches and synagogues alike were burned as the communists tried to eliminate theism by force, similar to what would unfold in communist Albania. However, eventually they gave up and resorted to less drastic tactics. Even after Stalin, while church was allowed, it was heavily controlled, and what priests had to say would be monitored. On special holidays and some Sundays Soviet TV programs would air their best movies/shows to dissuade people from attending church. It was hard, if not impossible, to move very high in the Soviet government while being a practicing Orthodox Christian. If simply making the church lose its power was all Stalin and the USSR as a whole wanted, none of these would be necessary. He simply would have secularized the government. But no, that wasn't all. Soviets before, during, and after him kicked and shot the theists even while they posed no threat. I would also like a source for that second claim about Yezhov.
USSR was horrible in many respects and I would never want it back but I do respect him for putting people's lives over his power (unlike, say Putin). It was indeed his victory. Utmost respect to him.
And the people suffered with their country in disintegration. But what happened to USSR may soon happen to America , the country is slowly losing its number one status and may collapse in the near future.
I remember a classmate was doing a presentation of the USSR to our world history class in middle school and one kid asked "Why does the president have a tattoo of Thailand on his forehead?" And now for the life of me cannot unthink that.
His behavior during the 1991 ГКЧП coup is a textbook example of lack of leadership. Yes, he put in motion some of the positive processes once it's gotten to be his turn to lead ЦК КПСС in the mid-eighties, but from that point he was just along for a ride, controlling little if anything. I believe a great case study can be made in comparison of Russian and Chinese transitions from socialism to capitalism. Chinese Communist Party held the helm, allowing for gradual and controlled transition, while Gorbachev completely lost control and drove the country straight into chaotic violent disintegration. Shame, really.
I think there is a difference given the imperial nature of the USSR. In WWII it absorbed through force peoples and territories which in no way considered themselves "Russian", whereas Communist China came about through what was a civil war along mostly political lines. Thus the USSR was ended up much more like post WWI Austria-Hungary, as opposed to post WWI Germany which was a much more unified state.
@@Sphere723 It is an enormously complex topic, impossible to cover here. But I wasn't really talking about the breaking apart of USSR, with the Republics separating from Russia. I was talking about the sudden collapse of centralized Communist Party control. The collapse of an economic system.

I was 19 when the USSR collapsed. I had no idea of the gravity of it all. I thought it was just some reforms and a couple borders being opened up to other Soviets. Personally, I think Gorbachev just got caught holding the bag. The USSR could not last forever. Western pressure and Soviet aggression was a bad combination. After decades of aggression being met with fierce resistance and essentially walling yourself off from the world it died. As Margaret Thatcher said, “you’ll eventually run out of other people’s money”. Sadly, the future doesn’t look bright for Russia, or Russians.
Lol, the aggression of the USSR? Western countries began to impose sanctions on the USSR from the moment of its appearance. During World War II, when the USSR was already approaching Berlin, Churchill developed a plan to attack the USSR and continue World War II, and the United States came up with a plan for nuclear bombardment of key cities of the USSR. Immediately after the end of World War II, Churchill announced the beginning of the Cold War, and a little later, NATO was created, which allegedly had nothing to do with the USSR, although when the USSR applied to NATO, the West did not accept the USSR. It was only when NATO did not accept the USSR into the alliance that the Warsaw Pact was created a few years later. So it is worth recalling that the division of Germany into western and eastern is the plan of the West. Stalin proposed a unified Germany that would maintain a neutral status. After that, the Caribbean crisis began, which Western propaganda associates with the aggression of the USSR, however, Western propaganda forgets to mention that the beginning of the Caribbean crisis was laid by the US nuclear weapons in Turkey, which, by the way, is still there. Yes, the USSR at the first time of its existence had a course for a world revolution, but it changed with the coming to power of Stalin, who chose the course of building socialism in one country, that is, Russia

People hate him because
1) vast majority of them lived better under the Soviet Union
2) his incompentence in keeping it going... the USSR didn't collapse, at least the old one, it was his perestroika that destroyed the economic (and political) base on which a soviet style planned economy functioned.

Very wise and peaceful man. His actions prevented civil wars in the former USSR and eastern Europe, and he sacrificed the USSR to prevent world war.
He had no choice!!
False
A very wise point you have there. I'll try to take this advise as far as my life will let me.
The USSR provoked the west? How? By just existing?

In many former soviet and satellite states Gorbachov is praised as the man who gave people freedom
This is a shared sentiment among a lot of my Eastern European colleagues.
at the end He peacefully transferred the power and allowed for the first and only clean elections in Russian history.
@Leonard Grabsky In Russia, maybe. In Poland, it meant that they were done being a puppet of the Soviet Union after four decades.

It's great, once you hear it, it cannot be unheard xD
His behavior during the 1991 ГКЧП coup is a textbook example of lack of leadership. Yes, he put in motion some of the positive processes once it's gotten to be his turn to lead ЦК КПСС in the mid-eighties, but from that point he was just along for a ride, controlling little if anything. I believe a great case study can be made in comparison of Russian and Chinese transitions from socialism to capitalism. Chinese Communist Party held the helm, allowing for gradual and controlled transition, while Gorbachev completely lost control and drove the country straight into chaotic violent disintegration. Shame, really.
he is pussy and coward
Well, it gave my country (Estonia) its freedom back
I think there is a difference given the imperial nature of the USSR.

She was a Russian, French and Spanish language teacher with 2 Masters degrees from the University of California at Davis. She looked like Doris Day the movie star. She crashed the Banquette held in Mr Gorbachev's honor at the 100th commencement of the graduating class of Northeastern University in Boston. I was attending my 25th class reunion. I graduated with a BSME degree in Mechanical engineering class of 1973. I carried the American flag into the fleet center to lead the graduation class in. Mr Gorbachev was the featured speaker. He has the best speaking voice next to my fathers that i ever heard. He gave a one of a kind awesome speech. My wife and kids saw me on the big screen TV of the fleet center as i carried the flag in. My wife passed away in 2010 at age 60 from inflammatory breast cancer. Now i can say for certain Mr. Gorbachev is a very honorable man. I am American and very lucky to have attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduating. Our house was flooded and i no longer have the video tap. But I can still hear Mr Gorbachev's voice in my brain. He has a very good grip when he shakes your hand. I am now 75 years old living in senior housing in CT. It's funny how only Americans say this because they love how Gorbachov destroyed the Soviet Union while shaking hands with Reagan.
Lone Wolf The Soviet Union collapses for several reasons. Gorbachev was not to blame. He was merely the man in charge when it happened. But the Soviet empire collapsed did largely to the loss of the war in Afghanistan and the rise of the national independence movements in Eastern Europe together with economic collapse at home. It was a fragile empire, built largely on victory in WW2. The USA will collapse too, sooner than you think. It’s already rotting from within.
