great recipe and one that my gujerati wife has made numerous times. nice to see you doing a bit of home style to complement your fantastic BIR material. Looking forward to the new ebook, the last one was great ! any tips on designing curry café kitchens, sourcing your suppliers and kitchen hygiene would be a good ! keep it up pal ! You and happyleader are great viewing !
Looks pretty good. Oddly enough I've done this myself when spicing up beans to make curried beans. I used slightly different spice mix and red bassar powder and it's great.
Thanks for the video and the others. Great to watch and very informative. Just noted through the shop link on your website appears to be non-functional by the way.
I use Heinz beans in my chilli con carne with the sauce rinsed off. Its nice because the beans still hold a little of the sweetness from the sauce. Much better than just a plain boiled/tinned bean.
This curry also works great with kidney beans or chickpeas instead of baked beans. I think I might try making a curry with a 'full English breakfast' tin!
Amazing!! I had a go Julian, given it to friends and neighbours alike, they are all loved it. Passed your link over too. Will need to have a go with a few more of your recipes. I'm making a Valentine Baked Bean Curry tomorrow!! Yey
Really enjoying your videos since stumbling over them a few days ago. This is the sort of curry info/education that I've been looking for. Thank you for sharing! Enjoy when you have the big chap with the smooth noggin on as well.
*tin baked beans *currants/raisins/sultanas *curry powder *onion *brown sugar Cooked onions in curry powder Add beans with the sauce included, Add currants, add brown sugar to taste, let simmer for 10 mins. This is how I make them. We have ours with chicken and jacket potatoes.
Tried this just now (although I have no asafoetida), very tasty. Nice combination of the soft sweetness of the beans mixed with the heat of the chilis and the slight pungency of the garam masala. I had some round steak pieces left over from another dish and threw them in before adding the tomatoes. It actually worked quite well with the beans.
Baked beans are basically haricot beans, so if you're going to wash the sauce off, you might as well use them as they'd be cheaper too. I suppose you could make this with any of the canned beans like chickpea, butter beans, or a mixture. I love using canned beans in curries and other cooking though; they're so cheap, nutritious and tasty. Thanks, J, I will try this curry blend with the beans of my choice... need me some ajuan first though !
Hi Chef. I have to say that this is not one for me. However, can I ask if the baked beans, although rinsed, retain any of the sweetness from the tomato sauce in the tin? I'm thinking this is a good Saturday lunchtime snack on toast before going to the football and.... You know what I mean Bro!
Hi whats up! I made this with kidney beans instead and doubled the amount of hing (was using 100% pute stuff;) .. turned out to be awesome! Thanks for the recipe i dig your vids cheers mate!
Hey Chef. Love your guides, I have both eBooks but wondering if your cookery courses will ever happen? I have emailed on numerous occasions to various different addresses and never once heard back. thought I would try this method :) IPlease let me know. Ta.
I made this and it’s excellent! Love your vids Julian. Question tho, looking to make this healthier by leaving out the oil. Would simmering the spices in the sauce give similar results? I’m trying to cook healthy, but love Indian food. Went to a healthy Indian restaurant once and it was totally bland...
I might try this one...but to me ,curried baked beans is when I wake up next day after the curry the night before to find a little left overs...instead of throwing it away I throw a tin of baked beans in with a couple of tablespoons of water and its good to go on a slice of toast....That brings me to another point about curry ..The bread.. you don't have to use just chappatiis or naan bread...try a nice piece of fluffy white bread to soak up all the flavours...
Made this tonight - I was really impressed with it, will definitely do it again. I opted to only use a decent splash of oil, enough to cover the bottom of the pan and stop spices burning. Still tasted great. IMO there is no need to add 150ml of oil, it may well be authentic home style cooking, but then British asians are 6 times more likely to get diabetes then the rest of us. Also, I tasted the sauce after having cooked through the tomatoes. I was really disappointed, very bland & not very interesting. But the garam masala & beans totally transform it.
I've been making this for years. Why do you wash the sauce off the beans. It tastes better with the original sauce on. And add a knob of butter to it at the end. You will thank me. 👍
Have mice in my house. Tried traps and poison. Thank you. This recipe will make them perish with my massive farts. Hopefully shut the missus up too In all seriousness can’t wait to try this 👍
we use this curry for slimming world and iv lost nearly two stone so leave out the oil use fry light , add cooked chicken and eat all you like ..thank you
That sounds like a great idea. Most tinned beans can have a really awful texture. I use chick peas in my chilli... blasphemy, I know. Delicious, though!
theres another way of looking at this - I have baked beans in my cupboard, I can go and make this recipe now. Theres not many people watching this video who dont have baked beans in their cupboard already. I bet most people however dont have plane haricot beans in their cupboard and would have to make a journey to the shop and spend money on something when they already have the ingredients for the job. I think that answers your question.
@Cerne I don't believe anyone is suggesting that baked beans are free - correct me if I'm wrong. The question was "Why would anyone buy baked beans and rinse off the sauce, when haricot beans would be a fraction of the price". My response is that most people "already" have baked beans and dont have haricot beans. So the use of haricot beans would mean an "additional" cost (and journey) for most people who "already" have baked beans in their cupboard. Not sure why I'm have to break down what was a simple response to a simple question, but there you go, I hope that clears it up for you
one of your best videos!
Looks good mate.
Absolutely wonderful. I opened a tin of Branston baked beans. Warmed it up with a spoonful of curry paste. Do you notice do you know, tasted lovely.
Totally different to what you have done before. I like the potted history about this curry. So true.
let me try this right now sir, i think this curry is gonna b great

simple is always the best ,Thanks Julian
Thanks Julian. Certainly different to what you've done before, and I am certainly going to try it out. Probably work with chickpeas, too?

Well done chef, thank you
Looks pretty good. Oddly enough I've done this myself when spicing up beans to make curried beans. I used slightly different spice mix and red bassar powder and it's great.

I tried this and had it on toast!! Absolutely brilliant
Really enjoying your videos since stumbling over them a few days ago. This is the sort of curry info/education that I've been looking for. Thank you for sharing! Enjoy when you have the big chap with the smooth noggin on as well.
I could smell the spices coming of the screen just by watching this clip!!! Well done mate.
thanks!
*tin baked beans

lol you’re so young looking there Julian. You were right with the spelling of Ajwain, it’s also known as Carom seeds
Hi Julian,
I've just made them first time, for my dinner today, BEST beans ever,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Much appreciated mate.

I made this and it's very nice! Thanks for an easy, tasty curry that is quick!

Hi Julian, could you pls tell me the name of your FIRST book? Does it have an ebook version? Where can I get it? Thank you.
Hi whats up! I made this with kidney beans instead and doubled the amount of hing (was using 100% pute stuff;) .. turned out to be awesome! Thanks for the recipe i dig your vids cheers mate!
Julian where can I find your spice kits from to make all these great looking currys
I just made this curry, which took me less time than the rice needed to boil. Tasted really good! Thanks for a super simple recipe!

those dont look like teaspoon measures

I will definitely try this but i'm going to use large butter beans / i just think it will be better than this type of bean.
haha beaker. Like it.
Julian could you replace beans with chick peas?
Cook fresh coriander in the curry.Tastes even better.
Made this tonight - I was really impressed with it, will definitely do it again.

You could also substitute chick peas for the baked beans.
yes the ebook is called 'The Secret to That Takeaway Curry Taste' link underneath the video
why not use a tin of mixed beans instead?
I would add some lentils n chickpeas. I love baked beans but i like them with the sauce on toast! lol, great recipe though. :)
This is a staple of my diet now. I don't use as much oil, as that amount would likely kill me, though!
How many does it serve?
One!!! 😉
I've been making this for years.
Why do you wash the sauce off the beans. It tastes better with the original sauce on. And add a knob of butter to it at the end. You will thank me. 👍
I laughed when I read this comment. I have made a similar dish in the past and have a habit of topping things off with butter. Heavenly stuff. :-)
Nice to see something so different! Will have to give this a try!
Ajwain seeds are called carom seeds in English.
Result!
Have mice in my house. Tried traps and poison. Thank you. This recipe will make them perish with my massive farts. Hopefully shut the missus up too
In all seriousness can’t wait to try this 👍
Gonna give this a go! Very easy to make!
Are u a professional Indian chef or do u cook indian food as a hobby?
we use this curry for slimming world and iv lost nearly two stone so leave out the oil use fry light , add cooked chicken and eat all you like ..thank you
is using an oil an absolute necessity....or can the oil be successfully omitted \ substituted for something else??
i remember my gujarati friend told me years ago baked bean curry, and i thought he was having me on. apparently not ;-)
Go Blue......
julian dear boy, it's turmeric not tumeric! just a small point to a great indian chef. Adrian
When he says hing is very pungent he means it, I have mine stored in 3 containers to stop the smell escaping
I am sure its good, but why not just normal salted beans or even fresh soaked beans..Common
That was blatantly his son lol and could tell he was like "ffs dad your making me do this on camera ffs" lol
That sounds like a great idea. Most tinned beans can have a really awful texture.

No not the easiest curry in the world to make. You could buy a jar of curry sauce and heat it up.
Yeah but those are shit.
How come you never see any female chefs in restaurants ?
It is a very physically demanding job often working long hours and standing up for 6+ hours at a time. There are a few female chefs though.
too long winded.
Is it possible to reduce - half or even quarter - the oil? I mean, the dish is delicious, but that much oil is over 1000 calories!
Horrible, horrible cooking. Don't go near this, it is vile.
Perhaps you don't like Currie's
Interesting recipe, I must try this some time. I have to say, next time don't record during a hurricane!
would be better if you explained in more detail
