Defunctland 8:48 technically Twister is a Warner Bros film. It was distributed by Warner Bros in the United States. It was only internationally where Twister was distributed by Universal. Other than that, great job with the video.
The cruelest irony was in 1996 me and my brother was about to see the show and we just missed the last showtime by a few minutes. And the next day we came back the show was canceled forever.
The great thing about these stage shows is that they are such a stable income for actors who might not otherwise be able to support themselves onstage. I have a lot of friends who really enjoyed their time performing at Disney, Universal, and other theme parks.
A lot of the performers at Universal still talk about the 'Great acting purge' of the early 2000's. When the actors tried to unionize, (which they were able to do in Hollywood, by the way) Universal Orlando cruelly laid almost all of them off. Roaming versions of Charlie Chaplin, The Marx Brothers, Marilyn Monroe, Luci and Ricky Ricardo, Count Dracula, Frankenstein, Mae West, W.C. Fields, Beetlejuice, The Ghostbusters, and Harry from Harry and the Hendersons... all gone almost overnight. They did eventually bring some of these characters back, but never to the amount they had in the beginning. Very sad indeed for all these talented actors.
Two successful actors that I know of off hand that were Ghostbusters at universal, one Wayne Brady, and the other was actually in this video briefly, Jamie Kennedy.
I always love when you use clips from the "Video Brochures" or whatever they're called. They're such a time capsule, and always invoke a huge wave of nostalgia for me. Please never stop doing this haha
Yeah thats scary ASF. Imagine graduating 3 different schools that were free, then going to school to be a teacher where you had to pay to be there, graduating that school, and then going back in the same school after graduating to work and be paid to be there teaching kids half your age the same things you just finished learning the previous year(s). It's like an Orwellian nightmare. No way.
It’s funny that they used the Extreme Ghostbusters for that second street show but none of the performers look anything like the characters from that cartoon series. The Extreme Ghostbusters had a female member and a man that was wheelchair bound. It was actually a good follow up the the real Ghostbusters cartoon.
9:42 Just in this interview alone, you can see the passion that this team had when making this attraction. They wanted to create a magical experience. I feel like that passion at Universal is dead (with the exception of Harry Potter.)
it allowed him to escape the model, so presumably yes. Although none of this magic or science fiction tech is ever explained so to speculate is pretty pointless
Whatever allows a ghost to be a ghost seems significantly hampered by being in the containment unit. Ghosts that can pass through walls aren't flying out of the containment unit immediately after being put in it.
That was a really fun haunted house. Terror Dogs, Gozer, Mr. Stay Puft... they even had a jump scare from Slimer at the end mirroring the movie where he lunges at the audience just before the end credits roll.
I have to say, I get very frustrated with Universal and them replacing rides. When I was young, I went there in the 90s and got to enjoy all of the original rides. I went back when I was in college, and most of the rides I loved were gone. I think at the time the only ones left were Earthquake (which I still can't believe lasted for as long as it did) Jaws, and ET. People may get frustrated with Disney when they close rides and replace them, but at least a lot of the greats remain or are updated. Universal feels like a completely different park now. I went on the Twister...thing when I went back in college and it was pretty lame. Especially since it was replacing this amazing show. Twister was basically a "show" combined with a wind tunnel. This reason is why I enjoy Disney more than Universal.
LPlandOFazul I mean when you say that now then people are always like, "Well what about Tower of Terror, huh?" Without realizing that if Universal ran the place, not only would that be closed, but Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, Star Tours, And much more would've been closed years ago.
You have to be aware that Universal doesn't own all the movies these attractions are based on and they can only have them standing for as long as the contract for the licensing is good. For instance, Universal can have their Marvel rides and shops in Islands of Adventure for as long as that license is good (what they negotiated prior to Disney's buyout of Marvel) BUT once it's over, the Marvel characters will be seen in Disney theme parks only! Of course, Universal will make the money they can now with what they have rights to BUT when the license is up, all those rides and attractions will have to go down or be repurposed. I would imagine they'd rename the Hulk rollercoaster but the 3-D Spider-Man ride will probably be removed. That's just the name of the game. For the moment, the license agreement covers the Florida parks only... By agreement, Disney CANNOT use the characters licensed to Universal-Orlando in the Disneyworld Theme Parks. Disney DOES have Marvel sections in the California park and the Hong Kong resort. That could always change if Universal decides the Marvel section is not worth the licensing but for the time being if you want something other than Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, Captain America, the classic Avengers (Thor, Iron Man), the Hulk, and X-Men make their home at Universal Orlando. The other reality is to keep people coming back to the park AND to attract new visitors, they have to revitalize on occasion. Disney faces the same problems in its parks, too. That inevitably means some of the old attractions will have to come down and they can use the excuse of declining attendance, maintenance issues, or license lapses to make changes. I do agree that there are certain things like Haunted Mansion at Disney or the Alfred Hitchcock experience at Universal which should never go. Maybe, occasionally they should get a facelift or new technology applied but some things should never be removed. The Back to the Future ride at Universal was fantastic but they felt it outlived its purpose until they reboot that franchise or an exec decides to give BTF another chance at an attraction. Likewise, not everybody like the changes for the revised Star Tours ride which is already in its second revision with additions from the last 2 numbered Star Wars films. The Tower of Terror survived at Orlando because of fan uproar and disgust at what they did to the California version of that ride so sometimes a little fan protest will make the park overseers rethink their decisions.
Now its even worse....no Jaws, no Earthquake, and I suspect ET will be gone soon. Its very depressing....just stuff like Transformers and Jimmy Fallon now...

Extreme Ghostbusters did have a toyline. I had a few of the figures. I think we can thank Bill Murray too for constantly being on again and off again with the project as I recall.
I love the screens though because it's literally nothing like what we have in any of the theme parks in the UK. Oh my god, I was one of the lucky kids who got to be a Ghostbuster in the pre show!! Such amazing memories. The best job a 9 year old could ever hope for XD
Would you be able to do a video that addresses "The Eisner upset"? Those of us who are new to the Disney park fanbase don't fully get why everyone seems to hate him so much. I get that he was the driving force behind rides like Alien Encounter, but there seems to be so much more he's responsible for, and it'd be nice to see his "impact" compiled into one video. (P.S. I did ask @yesterworldentertainment this same question, so maybe a collab video could be in the future?)
OK, in all seriousness, I think it’s probably because Eisner was so blatant about being more interested in the money than in what Disney actually made. That’s not to say that any of the previous CEOs were any different-Eisner was just a hell of a lot more open about it than they were.
It's funny, seeing this comment six years in the future, and knowing that Micheal Eisner and his impact on the company has basically become a running joke on the channel.
Checking my feed and seeing this made my day! You passion and interest in this subject is just so apparent and it's so nice to be a part of ❤️ Please don't ever stop doing what you love :)
HEY! My names's in there! But, seriously, thank you SO much for doing this. I had no idea there were two versions. I remember the first one. I also completely forgot about the street show with Beetlejuice. You brought that memory back for me! I can't wait to show this to my family to see if they remember it. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for doing Ghostbusters!!!! This show was near a dear to my heart and being givin the defunctland treatment is the best way to start my weekend. Nothing but love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember seeing this attraction when I was 9, oddly enough it was just a few months before it closed (didn't realize that at the time). As a HUGE Ghostbusters fan, seeing it pretty much blew my mind.
YESSSS! Thanks so much for making this one. This was one of my favorite attractions as a kid and was always the first thing I ran to when I visited the park.
Dude I wish someone has footage of that one time the Ghostbusters didn't show up. One guy running around stage with a proton pack trying to do four actors job's just sounds hilarious.
thanks for listing my name and for listening to the suggestion i enjoyed the video as well as all the other ones an hope to continue enjoying future videos
Another great episode, glad I got to see this one before it closed. Also, Hi-C Ecto Cooler, forgot what it tasted like. Going to suggest The Fun-tastic World of Hannah Barbera once more, if I recall it was very close to this attraction.
Lime-flavored Hi-C juice. There was also, naturally, a upswing in green gelatin, due to its consistancy with the ectoplasmic goo that the ghosts - chiefly Slimer - are made of, plus the iconic slime of Nickelodeon.
I swear I read somewhere that the ghosts for this show were designed by the Chiodo Brothers, which is why the clown ghost looks like it stepped right off the set of Killer Klowns From Outer Space, but now I can't find anything.
Watching this in 2024 and boy so much had happened since this video, with the release of the two new Ghostbuster films ghost fever is back in full swing and there are rumors going around like crazy with even some reputable sources saying Ghostbusters may return to universal in some way, shape, or form.
I still remember seeing this as a kid. (Not sure if it was the first or second version) But at the end with the meetup with the actors I heard this woman yell out, "HEY! That's not Bill Murray!!"
I love the series and the great videos, thanks for making them! I remember going on this ride back in 94. I was just a kid but I loved GB. I remember not being too impressed with this ride but it was great seeing it again!
Just random and has nothing to do with the extreme ghostbusters cartoon. Said cartoon featured a man in a wheelchair, a female ghost buster who looked a bit like the animated version of lydia from beetlejuice and 2 other busters.
@Mike K False, it was actually a continuation of the original cartoon, and a lot of the same creative talent behind that show worked on it. I know the "extreme" part is a bit dated today, but it was actually a pretty cool show that had even more terrifying ghosts than the original, and having it revolve around a new cast was a risky idea but it actually worked. I love the concept of the original Ghostbusters passing the torch to a new generation, which is what they should have done with the third movie but oh well.
Extreme Ghostbusters was amazing and is considered canon to RGB and also exists in its own universe. Also the female exists in a different form in the comics.
Che1Angelius Hahaha yeah I did that too! It was a shame that Weinerville of all things was what they were taping when I was there. They had kids come out and do something like a conga line behind the host for use while the credits rolled on TV. Horrible show, cool experience.
I just had to say I loved your line about Universals future, "Then who you gonna call"? That wad brilliant, and I bet you had tjat planned the whole time in writing this, bravo! Ive loved these vids so much since I found them quite by accident today after news of a Florida man being arrested after camping out at Disney's closed Discovery Island. They have been so much fun and brought me back to a great time in my childhood I never thought I would see again or share the way I remember them, the best part that inspired me to comment was the description and picture in tjis vid of the Peppers Ghost Effect, tjat included an image of the Haunted Mansion that was Straight out of a Crazy creative dream I had! I have had dreams that I've realized later were from a theme park experience I've been through, case in point being Spiderman chasing the Green Goblin around Brooklyn Bridge and getting nauscious was me reliving the Montu at Bush Gardens. But I had no idea how far those memories stretched back as I havent been to Disney in 30+ years when I was a kid and that Haunted Mansion bit was not that long ago! I screen taped it and must have rewatched it a dozen times now with chills and goose bumps as it was a ghost related dream in a video about Ghostbusters! So thank you for solving an old mystery of mine! I loved these vids so far and look forward to seeing them all, and please keep up the good work! Your new fan Tom. Ps thank that guy in Florida who snuck on to Discovery Island, bet it may renew interest in it now! Who knows.....
Fantastic video! I loved this attraction so much as a kid, got to see it twice. It made a huge impression on me. I was so sad to go back to Universal years later after it had been replaced. That said, I did the VR experience at Madamme Tussaud's last year and it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Hopefully that will pick up traction, because I'd do that again in a heartbeat.
Literally was just binge watching Defunctland videos and this popped up. What a pleasant surprise. Also funny thing was I was just talking to my younger sister about the old Ghostbusters show this morning. Now I'll just show her this video instead of vaguely explaining it 😂😂😂
Does anyone know what music is playing in the background at 2:27? It's one of those movie soundtracks that got subsequently recycled over and over in various movie trailers.
ooh waterworld mentioned!! I've seen the waterworld stunt show at universal japan and though i dont speak Japanese very well it was really cool (maybe i just really like stunt shows lol)
I requested it before, but the more I think about it, the California Tower was the inferior Tower, and you can still find it in Florida and France. As history it might be fun, but honestly, I don't really feel like it's necessary for Defunctland right now.
I love your videos, really well done. The Disney videos really don't have any information I don't already know but I enjoy them anyway for the editing and inside jokes. But I REALLY like these Universal Studios Florida videos from when it opened, because as a west coast kid, I didn't follow what was going on with them in the pre-internet days. Great information about things I didn't know, especially ironic since I worked for Universal Studios Hollywood in the mid-90's.
I found it enjoyable, too. The GB comic series Ghostbusters 101 actually connect OG GB with this new one, making it canon via when the prime 'Busters defeated Gozer, it spread the essence of Ghostbusters across several parallel dimensions, so the ideas, faces, etc of that prime dimension bled into other alternate worlds, or perhaps just that particular dimension. I personally don't call it a 'reboot', more or less the alternate dimension Ghostbusters :D
I went to elementary school with Larry Chickola, the chief roller-coaster engineer for Six Flags. When busing started, his folks put him in Catholic school, so we didn't see each other any more. He was a good kid, great sense of humor, and cute!

I get that he was the driving force behind rides like Alien Encounter, but there seems to be so much more he's responsible for, and it'd be nice to see his "impact" compiled into one video. (P.S. I did ask @yesterworldentertainment this same question, so maybe a collab video could be in the future?)
Eisner’s a cockend, that’s why.
Happy 20k subs. I hope you get 100k. Or even better. 1 million!
Nice to see my name in the suggestion list! Thank you! :')
Great video as always! Keep up the great work.
the original Journey Into Imagination ride!!
As someone who rode the revamped Journey into Imagination, I can agree with this.
It's just not the same without the Dreamfinder.
gokaury Dreamfinder was one of the stars of the attraction! I loved the concept and I don't think Figment really works without him.
HEY! My names's in there! But, seriously, thank you SO much for doing this. I had no idea there were two versions. I remember the first one. I also completely forgot about the street show with Beetlejuice. You brought that memory back for me! I can't wait to show this to my family to see if they remember it. Thanks again!
if you want a video who you gonna call defunctland
Great web site
*a good video
This looked really fun and entertaining. Wish they could've made an updated version. Thanks for sharing this. Never knew this existed
Next do Alfred Hitcock Universal attraction!!
Once again your caption humor is on point. "Fight, Fight, Fight" over a picture of 2016's Ghostbusters.
Narrator: and then who you gonna call?
Me: HE-MAN!,HE-MAN!,HE-MAN!,HE-MAN!,HE-MAN!
Great video! I was actually selected for this show when I was a kid! Great experience! Thank you so much for resurrecting a great memory.
The ‘girl that was saved’ and that ‘ghostbuster’ were so hooking up
This show is one of my most vivid memories from my visit to Universal Studios way back when I was 10. I loved it so much.
I heard that the clowns that appear in the show as ghosts. It's actually a reference to Killer Klowns From Outer Space.
Why do you keep using a wax sculpture of Brad Pitt as a visual representation of yourself?
@EVOlution Production Studios Absolutely.
Why not?
Cause he's actually a sentient wax sculpture of Brad Pitt given life, don't judge him
What are you talking about? That's a picture of Kevin.
@@harrylane4 lol no it's not. I think I bothered him enough with my comments that he doesn't use Brad Pitt in any of his new videos.
Fun fact: the new ghost that were creating for the show were made by the Chiodo Bros.
Kevin: "The animatronic head was 22 feet wide, 22 feet tall..."
Me: sounds good
Kevin: "...and 18 feet deep"
Me: COWARDS
I love the series and the great videos, thanks for making them! I remember going on this ride back in 94. I was just a kid but I loved GB. I remember not being too impressed with this ride but it was great seeing it again!
Just random and has nothing to do with the extreme ghostbusters cartoon. Said cartoon featured a man in a wheelchair, a female ghost buster who looked a bit like the animated version of lydia from beetlejuice and 2 other busters.
Eric Ratcliffe that was a cheap knock off that has nothing to do with the real ghost busters
Brie Russell it was lame back then
Extreme Ghostbusters was amazing and is considered canon to RGB and also exists in its own universe.
Also the female exists in a different form in the comics.
@Mike K Wow, what a brilliant rebuttal.
Can't you just admit you were wrong?
Imagine what this could be with volumetric/mist and fog projection. I may toy with this in the years to come.
Bustin Bustin Bustin Bustin Bustin, I ain't afraid of no SLEEP
sleepin makes me FEEL GOOD
Ain't scared of no bed lol
An Invisible bed...
FREAKY GHOST BED!
Bustin makes me feel good
madden8021 who ya gonna call? BED BUSTERS!
I like how the tour guide doesn't believe in ghosts but does believe the Ghostbusters battled a demigod.
This makes me more excited for Ghostbusters return to HHN 2019!!! #Ghostbusters
This was one of my favorite attractions at Universal. I'm still sad its gone.
"High fructose corn syrup"
LOL
DisneyQuest and the California Tower of Tower would make great episodes! Just found your channel and I've already binged every episode! Great stuff!
Love your videos any chance you can do The Funtastic World of Hanna Barbara and do Alfred Hitchcock: The Art of Making Movies?
This is an older video, but I love that you used some music from the Ghostbusters game. Absolutely adored it.
Do earthquake, twister: ride it out, and nickelodeon studios please!
well, nick studios would be difficult because it had volunteers and i was one of them once. it was so cool.
Che1Angelius Hahaha yeah I did that too! It was a shame that Weinerville of all things was what they were taping when I was there. They had kids come out and do something like a conga line behind the host for use while the credits rolled on TV.
Horrible show, cool experience.
I assume they removed the Earthquake ride/show then? That sucks, it was one of the coolest attractions they had there IMHO!
Can you do Looney Tunes River Ride?
They exist already
Love these videos so so much. Love finding out all the little tricks used to pull off the effects.
Hey Kevin You Should do Defunctland on DisneyQuest
Holy shit there's no reason for you to be this professional but I love you for it. Eisner bless
Do The Funtastic world of Hanna Barbera, Please eee?!
I never knew how much I wanted a Ghostbusters/Beetlejuice crossover film.
wow! they used a killer klowns from outer space hollogram lol
The same guys made the animatronics for this attraction.
Your thumbnails are honestly pretty epic.
Please do the Walt Disney world version of Snow White Scary Adventures
You gotta do the GOAT Disney dark ride Horizons
Fantastic video! I loved this attraction so much as a kid, got to see it twice. It made a huge impression on me. I was so sad to go back to Universal years later after it had been replaced. That said, I did the VR experience at Madamme Tussaud's last year and it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Hopefully that will pick up traction, because I'd do that again in a heartbeat.
love the content man!! sad universal is becoming a screen park.. can you do beetlejuice graveyard reuvue, twister or Hercules and xena?
Saw this live in 1996 in Florida!!! Thank you for posting this. Ghostbusters is my favorite movie!
Discovery Island? or Malstrom?
Chris Perez how would you put an island in a theme park ?
Just dig up a cove and Call is Defunct-scovery Island. :P.......actually, I should pattent that.
Literally was just binge watching Defunctland videos and this popped up. What a pleasant surprise. Also funny thing was I was just talking to my younger sister about the old Ghostbusters show this morning. Now I'll just show her this video instead of vaguely explaining it 😂😂😂
Earthquake has to be next into Defunctland, classic ride
Great video as always!
You know we all want a Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera video
what ya gonna do, do twister!
Does anyone know what music is playing in the background at 2:27? It's one of those movie soundtracks that got subsequently recycled over and over in various movie trailers.
Finally, someone else who hates screens on rides. Props are more expensive and less reliable but 1000% cooler.
ooh waterworld mentioned!! I've seen the waterworld stunt show at universal japan and though i dont speak Japanese very well it was really cool (maybe i just really like stunt shows lol)
dude you should do one on the great Muppet movie ride
I got to be one of the kids called up for the preshow when I was 7 (1994). I got to play with GAK. That’s all I remember. Enjoyed this so much.
Too early for Tower of Terror? Not much different with Mission Breakout, but could still be interesting
I requested it before, but the more I think about it, the California Tower was the inferior Tower, and you can still find it in Florida and France. As history it might be fun, but honestly, I don't really feel like it's necessary for Defunctland right now.
Your channel is my new obsession. Keep up the awesome work!
Terminator 3-D show next!!!
Guys... I don't wanna fight buuut... I actually really liked the new Ghostbusters move. I found it pretty funny.
I didn't hate it either.
I thought it was ok too
I hated it on principle, but you’re allowed to like it. No fights necessary. =0)
Honestly yes I hate the new one but I agree with your opinion , it was bad but at least we had a cameo of the original cast expect Ramses ( R.I.P )
I went to elementary school with Larry Chickola, the chief roller-coaster engineer for Six Flags. When busing started, his folks put him in Catholic school, so we didn't see each other any more. He was a good kid, great sense of humor, and cute!
