I like how between "manifestations of unspeakable tragedy or occult summonings" and "extra-dimensional beings worship by the ancients as gods" there is a group that is just "IDK big penguin beating people up."
I'm so excited for this! I keep the classification system clear in my head by trying to classify every ghost I see in movies/games/TV/comics/books etc.
The Old Ones would have to be. If you read Lovecraft, they're neither spirits nor are they truly "living" as we would understand that concept. They're like physical manifestations of primal ideas
The classification system in each branch of the franchise was catered to the audience it was trying to reach. The movies only had to be consistent enough not to be picked apart by critics. The cartoon didn't even care since the kids watching it would just consider it cool sounding scientific gobbledygook (old term for indecipherable BS). The roleplayers, however, would need harder definitions since a number of my groups had actual scientists, lawyers, chemists, and engineers playing them. And 'dittie' is just an old fashioned term for a catchy song or tune.
I feel like, for the most part, the class system is less about power, and more a way to classify how they interact with PKE. I mean if you're going to classify the Boogie Man as 6, and Cathulhu (Cthulhu) as class 7/8, there's more than just raw power to consider.
Really enjoyed watching this video, I am absolutely fascinated by the classification system in Ghostbusters and want to be able to remember it when asked about it or when to classify spirits, ghosts or beings in other media or myths in the world.
An extremely enlightening video and a look back at most of the creatures of the franchise, though the widely fluctuating categories of the animated ones are most likely just wonky writing of weekly television, something you thankfully and refreshingly admit to at the end, unlike most 'pedantic fans' online. WITH THAT SAID (joke): I am curious about the loose miscellaneous beings from the franchise who are not at all ghosts despite fitting within the category system, like Cthulhu, Egon's Dragon, or the lobster aliens of the roleplaying game, but that's probably just me being the alien and kaiju nut that I am talking about giant monsters and spacemen.
@@andy86iYeah god forbid people make mistakes. Especially on something so important as *checks notes* "Classifying the Ghostbusters ghosts". Pull out that 6ft long stick you have jammed 8ft up your ass and check your ego.
A bit of both, really. Some ghosts (like Vigo) can augment their powers using external means, like the river of slime. He was also a magician, and retained those abilities after death, making him more dangerous than most Class IV ghosts.
Basically they can be paired with the higher class as the stronger version. Class 1 and 2 are constructs Class 3 and 4 are basic human spirits Class 5 and 6 are augmented spirits or amalgamated beings Class 7 is angels, demons, and demigods.
Basically, aside from class 7, they're paired based on qualities that each "superclass" possesses, with the higher of the two being simply the stronger of the two. Class 1 and 2 are basically minor constructs manifested from psychokinetic energy, 1 being amorphous and 2 having a more specific form. Class 3 and 4 are basically just deceased humans, based on how much PKE they possess: weaker Class 3 ghosts are unaware of their surroundings and simply repeat their last living memories, while Class 4 have enough PKE to be cognizant of the present and have free will. Class 5 and 6 are a little trickier but basically amount to former mortals who attained spectral power on some way - Class 5 through simple rituals and Class 6 from multiple entities amalgamating together, going beyond the limits of a single being. Class 7 is basically angels, demons, and demigods. While the latter are often referred to as simply gods, they are not completely immortal or indestructible, and the system doesn't work on a theoretical level of a truly omnipotent being. It's arguable if such a being would even be classified as a ghost at all.
The Real Ghostbusters and The Extreme Ghostbusters classifications seem inaccurate to me the movies, the video game and rpg game have more accurate descriptions of what each class is defined.
Ditties=Short song/tune etc. And it is ironic that out of everything else that could actually be considered complicated. It is the simple word that is left forgotten lol
There was a Ghostbusters story DeviantArt. There was an extremely powerful entity called Echidna. She was a Class 17 being. Strongest ghost so in GB. Lol.
While the Ghosts go up to Class 13 as the highest rated one the class 13 ones first show up in Exteme Ghostbusters video game and none of the actual Movies.
The "Real Ghostbusters" show went ridiculous with the classes, it stopped making sense and made the class system not even worth thinking about. The movies handled much better.
Oh no Mr, I'm no man-child ghost head are ghostbuster wannabe, I was just hoping they would find A look like Egon Spengler to fill in the big shoes for the follow-up ghostbuster movies but the reitmans couldn't even fill in the spot to bring back together the four Ghostbusters in afterlife of gozer the golzarian and and the full form of Vigo in garraka if Ghostbusters 2 was everyone's least favorite...... will the return of gozer the golzarian and the full form of Vigo in full form of garraka without an Egon Spengler they were just shit
Id say your wrong in some instances. 🫤 EX: The Sewer Dragon would be a Class VI. As Class VI are actually Ghosts of Lower Life forms, Animals, Plants, microorganisms, Animalistic Ghosts, Collective manifestations, and also Composited entities. golems as mentioned. And the the ghost train, and Titanic. This is coming from someone who studies parapsychology and I do use the GB Classification system to classify Real world phenomena. I used the board game, The 2016 Ghosts from out past book and the 2009 game.
Haven’t checked out the little red Tobins Spirit Guid book but from the audios I listened to, they seme to correctly line up correctly with the 3 sources I mentioned I use.
i think part of the issue with this system is that it seems to be increasing toward the highest and most powerful beings, but animal spirits are explicitly at a higher level than humans, whose intelligence ought to make their spirits a lot more dangerous and better at using PKE. The pattern of "mist - vague body parts - human - human with an identity - and then ANIMAL" just doesn't really follow.
@@KairuHakubi It probably has more to do with raw animalistic power. Perhaps the intersection of instinctive prowess with raw physical power make them more powerful in spirit form. After all, PKE may not represent full mental capability. You never know, the universe has more rules than we've figured out yet.
@@ImpetuouslyInsane now that is an interesting idea. we assume our consciousness is the greatest there is, but maybe it turns out not, animals have a bigger one, ours is just... protruding more, and theirs opens up when they die.

i appreciate that the classification is more conceptual rather than powerscaling and much is a nice change of pace
I'm so excited for this! I keep the classification system clear in my head by trying to classify every ghost I see in movies/games/TV/comics/books etc.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.
cathulhu is "unclassifiable" in the physical edition of tobin's spirit guide, which i think is insanely cool

"SO BE GOOD! For goodness ssssaaaake!"
A practically perfect example of a ditty. Thank you Dr. Venkman. (Whoah-ooaahh, somebody's coming...)
Another great video! Supernatural and Spectacular!! 👍👍

The key keeper & gate master. Classic master gate, master trapper keeper
19:40 I believe they used the Howard Huntsberry recording of "Higher and Higher" to get Lady Liberty moving.
Bustin' just makes me feel so dang good! lol awesome vid! this channel has the BEST GB vids! :)

A ditty is a short, simple song.
In a video that takes a fair amount of research to make, they can’t be bothered to find that out? Staggering. Nobody knows anything these days.
Do a ditty ditty dum ditty do.
That's a little ditty right there!

I came here to ensure someone had pointed this out and to to like if they did 😂
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glaytor the devourer of worlds he is a Class 8 full roaming transdimensional deity. Sarton the destroyer he is a Class 17 unknown specter deity.
Nice to see you guys are still doing content.
This video was great. Now i need to get a copy of Tobins.
This video should be on The Ghostbusters Official Channel. Compliment intended.
a ditty is a tune, a song. like Foxy's humming in FNAF 1.
Ditties, to answer your question are an old timey name for small tunes or melodies.
... do people not know the word 'ditty' anymore? I can't become a ghost soon enough..
Hell Yeah!
Excellent job
Who else here has their own copy of Tobin's Spirit Guide?
☝🏻
Ditties are tunes, little songs
I want it but haven't gotten it yet
I always wondered if this classification had to do with power level or just what kind of ghost there was.
A bit of both, really. Some ghosts (like Vigo) can augment their powers using external means, like the river of slime. He was also a magician, and retained those abilities after death, making him more dangerous than most Class IV ghosts.

Class 1 and 2 are constructs
Class 3 and 4 are basic human spirits
Class 5 and 6 are augmented spirits or amalgamated beings
Class 7 is angels, demons, and demigods.
It seems like half the time class is more like the ghosts "species" and the rest of the time it's treated like a power level.

This was great!
Thumbs up and comment so Dan Aykroyd will come on here and give his analysis of this vid 😊
"What are ditties?" SONGS! You never heard that word before?
The Real Ghostbusters and The Extreme Ghostbusters classifications seem inaccurate to me the movies, the video game and rpg game have more accurate descriptions of what each class is defined.
Indeed. XGB once mentioned a Class 13, which behaved more like a Class 5.
well damn! it's been a hot minute! lmao
I wonder what the classifications of the various spectres in the Overlook Hotel would be, both in book and Kubrick movie form.
13:09 so... this Psychomagnotheric Slime is like fnaf's agony in ectoplasm form..
When it comes to the cartoon I think it's a a concept of base classification 1-7, then a modifier +/- given other factors not explained.
Isn't Cthulhu the most powerful being the Ghostbusters encounter in the Cartoon?
Ditties=Short song/tune etc. And it is ironic that out of everything else that could actually be considered complicated. It is the simple word that is left forgotten lol
The titanic ghost might be my favorite ghostbuster ghost even though it’s in accurate.

A ditty is a synonym for song
I like the first script more than the movie, interdimentional hunters basically
Yay!
33:21 wasn't he also "Vigo The Butch?"
Other than the Ghostbusters franchise what about other ghosts from other ips have classifications from Danny phantom to Scooby Doo to haunted Mansion?
I was right that grakka was a Class 7 full torso deity
As a kid I didn't realize the nanny was Yanosh either, despite Dana saying it.
This channel was ghosting me 👻
Classes are like Warp Factors...all over the place

Elly Kedward / The Blair Witch would be a Class 7.
❤️👻❤️
I allways assumed these Classes are more like Cathegories they belong to independant of their actual Danger
With all the knowledge you guys have, you dont know that ditties are catchy little songs? 😅
ditties are songs
What would make good content make a videos properly Classifying the ghosts from the animated series.
Ditties, are a type of Limerick, or short song. Like "There once was a man from Nantucket. . . "
If you really, really wanna know what ditties are think of limerick would be a good comparison
