- Road cyclists are alright at grinding out the miles over nice smooth tarmac; but can they actually ride a bike when there's rocks, roots, jumps, and berms on the trail. To find out, we welcomed back Hank of GCN, put him on a real bike; and let him loose in the Forest of Dean 🤘

To make things fair Neil gave a few helpful pointers; such as avoiding lycra at all costs, wearing a helmet with a peak, and the essential skill of bunnyhopping.

1:14 he was confused for a moment cause the bars are so wide :D
Funny you noticed that!
Haha he tried to grab the middle of the bars
@@timthe55th
yeah, the main road bikes have tiny handlebars, they have massive hooks on the bottom to hold on to and keep a aero position, just so you know
@@dotdankory r/woooooooosh
Dhaniel Arya nah do they really
You should have given him flats. That would be interesting
We don't want to see blood on this channel :D
Yes we do
Good by shins!
Riding with Jack 😂😂😂😂
Yes
Hank should have gotten a point for smashing his shin screwing around trying to do something new
Yes. Shin strike is a initiation for a mountain biker. 😁
It's pretty easy making fun of roadies because they don't know how to do all these cool tricks, but for a change I'd like to see Neil clad in lycra on a 100km ride with James. That would be fun too.
Mikuláš Mecháček Neil rides a road bike...
@@MilatovichFamily That's cool! I'd like to see a video about it then! By the way I like and ride both road and mtb, if it sounds offensive, that was not the intention.
I would bet Neil would make it. Challenge Blake 😁
And everyone can get stamina. But the technique ist the key.
Mikuláš Mecháček he did actually the longest day ride on his cross country bike wich is way harder than on road bike. The distance was around 160 km or something.
Neil telling someone to slow down??? Is he ill?
Jon Shaw Yeah but Neil slows down to go fast! 😅
Lol
If you want to ride fast, you gotta learn how to ride slow first. ;)
@@panzerveps not me... I just wing it and hope for the best 🤪🤪🤪🤪
@@gerthinatorgaming5952 I'm too old and too much of a roadie to wing it on the descents :P
He jumping with his clips rather then technique
Should have threw flats at him
josh Pinchemain hank: *laughs in penny farthing hour record*
Jayden *laughs in Unicycle *
Why is it a thing that people say "rather then" instead of "rather than" ? I genuinely don't understand because I see it very often
@@jahmalbaptiste9915
Some people don't understand the difference between "then" and "than".
Its the same thing that happens with
"their, there, and they're"
Did you make him lay down in that parking lot and roll around before filming?
I always love these crossovers! can a Mountain biker Cyclocross?
Well yes. Many mtbers race cyclocross over the winter.
They've done this one with Blake.
I raced cyclocross a few times and those mountain bikers kicked the crap out of me. They knew all about tire pressure and stuff that left me in the dust.
maybe they could do a video of an XC Bike on an CX course?
@@timothyleonardpugal2713 again, in some races you are allowed to ride a mtb. More tricky to carry on your shoulder though!
always love the episode crossover of GMBN & GCN
I think he needs to shift up one of two gears, the fast short pedal strokes definitely didnt help when he was trying to setup for the jumps..
Solid effort btw
Some of these people are so skilled that it’s just like asking “can football players play futsal?”
That was genuinely quite funny (even tho Hank was acting a fair bit). Lets have some more crossovers please- how about Blake powering up Alpe D'huez TDF route with the Siborg?
He’s better at bunny hopping than me wtf
Luca Iacono he’s jumping with his clips, give him flats and he won’t be able to
Clips
Ezra Redgwell the ones that aren’t clips are flats and clipless are clipped in
@Ezra Redgwell I learned cause the original version of "clipless" pedals, had an actual "clip" that you put your foot INto (I'd compare it to the motion of putting your feet into the stirrups on a horse). But they removed the over-the-foot "clip" on the modern versions, and thats why they're called clipless, they just lack that over-the-foot clip.
@Ezra Redgwell It's cause pedals used to have toe clips that went over your shoes, so when it changes to attaching your shoes at the bottom they called them clipless. Some exercise bikes still have the old toe clips if you've ever seen anything like that
Good intro to the skills, but I really want a part two where Hank rides a trail top to bottom to get some real stoke on. Love both the GMBN and GCN channels so always enjoy the cross overs. I am still waiting for am Ollie vs Blake cyclocross though since Emma and Matt have left GCN after their cross lessons.
Matt.... 🤣🤣 awesome bloke.
Let's ride up to the top of that descent too. Put that fitness to use.
GMBN and GCN are the best channels with the coolest Presenters, no doubt these guys are outstanding!!!🤘😄👍💪
Hank: *Bunny hops in like 8 minutes*
Me: *Has a heart attack when I manual for two seconds*
a year late but I heavily relate. Even tho I haven't lifted the front wheels yet and just have my body lean way back, I can already feel the heart attack coming.
@@crimvaxine5802 To this day, it still happens to me... you're not alone brother.
you should have taught him how to endo, that could have been really funny
I know that laugh at 1:48 🤔
Please tell me Matt is back again.😅
😮😅
Matt has his own youtube series now...I guess him (and later Emma) quitting the GCN must have something to do with behind the scenes of the show, probably the difference between the old (original) show and what the gcn was becoming at the time of his/her quitting. I didn’t like it either, but now after the 3rd change it’s become good again.
He was too low in his gearing
Road bikers are more used to coasting gears cause they can never stand up to gain power like on an mtb.
Quantum Leap Hahahaha what you’re saying road cyclists don’t stand up to gain power?
Get a mountain biker into a Red Hook style crit, would be so good
Hank leans really far back on corners. Move that weight forward and get some front wheel grip.
Euan Robertson should have told him how to roost corners that’s the only skill any one needs to be a biker
He's probably got memories of when the stem was halfway across the front wheel and you'd go OTB if you didn't lean back enough.
Fantastic, love seeing GCN & GMBN ribbing each other, definitely need more of that. Great riding Hank
😁 Great video Neil and Hank.
When do we see the next part when Hank hits the trails with Neil 👍
Great stuff #GMBN 👊
As someone who was into freestyling back in the 80's. A bunny hop was lifting both tires at the same time. Lifting the front then the back was know as a bronco. Just my two cents.
That's my understanding as well.
And either way, it's not a "mountainbiking trick"
It's a BMX trick that found use on the trail.
These young guys... they seem to forget their parents did this stuff way back in the "before time"
You know, pre internet?
I agree, defo BMX. We called the lifting front then back a"donkey kick".
@@colinmay70
Where you from? Maybe it was a regional thing?
Back in the 80s on the west coast in the SF bay area - a hop that starts with a front wheel lift via a manual and then a forward punch to lift the rear wheel was a "bronco"
A hop that lifts both wheels simultaneously was a "bunny hop"
@@stinkyfungus London England. Everything we learnt was from vids and mags from the U.S in the early days.
Martin Baker That makes sense, but i see a few jumping methods here. Bunny hop, Donkey kick and a Bronco. Any of these skills can be used for different situations and on different types of bikes. (Road, gravel and MTB). And I suppose different regions might give them different names. (Ie; The Lama). But since these tricks are named after animals it might be important to distinguish the names which might determine the use of a certain trick or skill. Ill take the liberty to define these three jumping methods;
1) Bunny Hop; lifting both wheels above the ground to a necessary hight and returning both wheels to the ground simultaneously. This skill is likely necessary on most bikes.
2) Donkey Kick; Raising the front wheel, while preforming a manual, then lift the rear wheel to a necessary hight, and then return both wheels to the ground simultaneously. This skill can be preformed best on a Mountian bike and needed for certain jumps or obstacles.
3) Bronco; Raising the front wheel, while preforming a manual, then lift the rear wheel to a necessary hight, and then return only the front wheel to the ground. Moments later the rear wheel would return to the ground. Unless you’re very skilled then continue on your front wheel only. ( that could be a Bucking Bronco).
I can do a bunny hop btw, on a gravel or mtb. Lol
These crossovers are the best, keep them coming please 👍😀
Lets be honest we all love cycling videos this is just what I need to get it going the blood I love it. I always watch these before I go out and get my body moving. I love when I always watch one of these, and then put up my heavy playlist I love like Delta Parole and then I just go haaaaard!!!! Tactic hasnt let me down yet.
Neil's reaction to that fistbump, glorious.
Great effort Hank, looked like you were loving it, +10points! Now make Neil pedal up Mont Ventoux.
What a great sport Hank! Awesome video
"Can roadies ride magpies"
-English(auto-generated) subtitles 2019
Aussie's can!
Surprised it got roadies right tbh
One thing I really struggled with when I started MTB after years of road riding, was cadence, for the first few rides all I did was pedal strike everything rather than trying to plan my line and work round obstacles. Got the hang of it now after a few moments over the bars 😂
Martin Hayes practice your pedal ratcheting technique to avoid pedal strikes- it’s hard but it’s super important- my enduro bike has super low pedals for stability at speed but it means it’s super easy to pedal strike stuff so I get it
Powering through stuff may seem to be the easiest bit for Hank, thanks to years on the boards.
We'll be seeking Hank on Fails and Bails soon. This time without a Penny Farthing.
Good show. I think most riders have those same issues - thinking they are getting low, yet are still so high, trying to get speed from pedaling harder rather than going light into the front and heavy down the back side of rollers.
1:48 Neil killed me😂😂😂
I ride enduro and road, and find that each one helps the other out with training for races or events. 10mile off road is much harder than on road
Kudos for not censoring Hank dropping the f-bomb at 4:56! :-)
he didn't though?
@@larslosh5598 sounded like it to me!
3:23 hes farting 😂
Respect to Hank for participating in this video! 👊
Great video guys. Sorry I haven't tuned in. Been very sick for the last few months...
Yo Neil needs to get on a road bike now.. great video🍻 I ride both😎🤙
Yooo that’s sick I live right by pedal a bike away in the Forest of Dean I go there quite a lot. They have some really good tracks
...I Feel Connected to Mother Earth! Funny! Cheers GCN!
There should be an "CAN MOUNTAIN BIKERS RIDE ROAD BIKES" video on GCN I would love to see that.
And take Neil to Ramp Test on Zwift
Yes they can
Zero skills needed for road, so why not?
@@Pienimusta I dont think so....
@@Pienimusta yeah... try a crit. It's not whether they are fit (most MTB rider are) or whether they can corner fast, or control a bike in tight quarters. It's whether you can do all that when some people are doing unpredictable things around you AND still keep your speed and efficiently follow a group, while thinking what is your best way for your team to get a result. Whole different set of skills... and yet the same foundation.
as a roadie I laughed my cxck of at that bunny hop.. because that is the way every roadie does a bunny hop..even me lol
Roadies can benefit a lot from bunnyhops, jumping on curbs and over pot holes...And it looks cool ;-).
Wish I could have a bike like those... lol... By the way nice video Sir. watching here from Philippines.
For his first Mtb experience,Hank is pretty good!👍
I live near a great group of trails that they can be pretty intense. When i was riding last year with my buddy we saw a guy riding the trails on a road bike. Absolute mad lad
Genuinely lost it at the berm bit 😂 NEIL!!!
Hank, where can I send the case of beer for making me feel much better about myself? - I have about the same level of MTB skill as you. At least MTBing is something you don't "have" to be good at to enjoy.
Neil you should have got yourself down to the Forest of Dean last weekend when the race was on definitely a good weekend
The cabbage at the end 🤣
Hank is a beast man. Super cool dude
for clarity, the roadie did infact do a proper bunny hop, what you were teaching him is called a bronco
Face plant waiting to happen!! and loving the deathgrip learning to bunnyhop lol
Hank on the GCN show is like Blake on GMNB show, we all just love them
Such a fun vid, so many punchlines from Neil... "That's cycling, that's not riding bikes" . "Peter Sagan is not impressive". Informative and fun, what's not to like ?
I watch both channels and think you should do more cross over videos
That thumbnail is golden dude.
I'd love to see the GCN guys ride some tech.
Here in the Philippines some road is sucks, so we use our HardTail MTB on road ( We replace Suspension to a rigid one ). We even use MTB as a TT Bike
"I went through Blake's drawers and managed to get a pair of his shorts" hahahahahaha
The best Manuel is what I call the "prairie dog". You Manuel all the way up so that your bike is straight up and you stand straight up. Boom prairie dog 😂
That you loved it is all there is to being a real Mountain Biker.
Shred hard and enjoy.
I'm wondering if you guys masked at 6:45 or that was really that close.... nice job!
I loved this vid! Educational and funny! I almost dropped my phone while lauging as Neil goes blasting by on the berm.
I laughed so hard watching him spin around the jump course in low gear
Haha I love this presentation.. nice one
Nice vid keep up the good work
This is literally a video about me.. . . I rode 9,000 miles on the road last year and just did my first MTB ride last weekend. I'm literally going to work on my bunny hop now.
In Germany the bunnyhop is called: Abziehn bis in Keller👊.
Best part was at the end when he went to do a fist bump and he grabbed his fist and shook it. Hilarious.
Loving collab with GCN! Keep it up guys
The thumbnail😂😂😂😂lol😂😂😂😂 I'm dying!!
6:46
Instructive, funny, and awesome
definately should see more like this
I’ve been mountain biking for 1 year now and I still can’t bonny hop😭
It's pony hop :)
Took me 3 years to learn- but in reality it was only a couple months once I started practicing every day
@@sanderlucioperca maybe lol
Just practice lifting your backwheel and lifting your front wheel seperately that helped me learn it
@@maxmeister6355 the only thing I ain't sure is lifting my back wheel without using my front brakes.
love how that road biker hits jumps whit no fear!
I'm a beginner mountain bike rider and don't really know what bike to get. The activities I'll be doing on my bike will be riding to school, local pump track and dirt jumps, some trails, riding around my neighbourhood and hitting jumps and just normal riding. What bike should I get. It must be a mountain bike. Thanks for the help.
Wow I finally learned what gnarly means 😂😂 thanks guys great video 👍🏻👍🏻
One thing for sure all this practice and never out of breath.
Thanks for helping
Good one fellas. Hank you definetely should go full MTB'ker
I dig all the gmbn and gnc guys but lets be real, bunny hops are a bmx thing lol
Man... Those moves...!!!
Haha, you didn't give him a front mud guard. Proper mountain bicyclist humour.
Is there a video where it's the other way around?
I would love so see that please. 🤗
"You should get down nice and low to your back tyre." -Hank proceeds to go not one inch closer to back tyre. I know what it's like. I'm a roadie. Been trying for ages, but I'm just not getting down.
When will we be seeing Hank on the Random Tandem?
Read the description it goes on for like 5.76 seconds!!!
Do it!!!?
i dont doubt pros..but when someone says "dont use your arms" i get lost..i mean..you literally have to pull up the bars to raise up the front end..same with riding a wheelie and doing a manual..the front dont just pop up on its own..lol..PLUS i find doing a bunny hop on my hardtail hard and annoying compared to my fully ridged urban bike..
The fact he did that good that quick is pretty impressive
I have rb and fulsus, the rb is really for flat road only unlike fulsus that can run to all types of terrain. Fulsus is best for me .
The only part I don't get is the constant lycra hate; if I want to wear my road/xc gear then leave me be, I don't bother riders for wearing baggies even on road bikes.
Crich775 lycra looks silly
@@chopin1962
So does the "shredder" mtb look.
baggies, floppy t shirt, shin guards, goofy helmet, and moto gloves
Face it. Riding a bike anyone looks silly, If you aren't a cyclist.
Love this video. Neil's expression at the fist bump was hilarious! I had to re-watch it a couple of times. Hank did an amazing job, though, and Neil is a fantastic coach.
Nice man!
No
Could you show a bunny hop with "proper" saddle height(i.e. saddle higher than handlebars)?
great video!
He's bunnyhopping higher than I can. I guess being able to hop every time you try is more important for jumps than how high you can bunnyhop.
Next up: Can Mountain Bikers ride a criterium? I guarantee trying to take tight corners in a big group at 40kph is more adrenaline than you'll get on a lot of trails.
Yeah but trails are more fun
