  • Inspired by a kundiman song called Ako'y Iniwan Mo
"The song is about a woman who is left behind by her lover for another woman
and halfway through the song there is a spokenword section where its a letter
by the unfaithful dude and it's like telling the listener to feel bad for the guy
and probably forgive him. i find it weird why a song would want us to empathize/sympathize
with a cheater and i've come to the conclusion its probably due to the composer's
roman catholic values, forgiveness and all, the thought irritated me a bit so i've
decided to make a tagalog song where the opposite happens and have a bloody ending"

    Lyrics
Sabi mo ako'y ang tanging iibigin
    Salungat ang aking nadama
Patuloy-tuloy pa rin ang aking puso
    Naniwala sa ating sumpaan
    Pre-Chorus
    Bathala bakit nagkaganyan
    Ako bang may sala
    Parang ako'y pinagtampuhan
    Panalangin ng aking katinuan
Nawa ay hinding siphayo ang aking mapala
    Chorus
Dibale, O aking sinta ika'y pinatawad
    'Di na kailangan magpaliwanag pa
    Mahal pa din kita
    Chorus
    Tiwalang iningatang iyong pinatay
    Bridge
    Bahay kubo dahil maliit

For people who don't know, the Carinosa is a Filipino folk dance that tells of the courtship and love (traditionally) between a man and a woman, and the dance steps express the playful love they have for each other. I love how this song tells a twisted and dark version to the original folk song/dance

Here's the story from what I've figured from the lyrics in the song.
Our singer is a young woman who is in a relationship (from what I believe, they are married, note the "Remember our promises," line, which most likely means wedding vows.) After some time, the woman began to doubt her partners faith to her, and begins to question him. (The main chorus reflects this thought of mine.) At first she isn't in too big trouble in doubting her partners faith, however when she asks him one day, he grows furious and hits her. (Note, "this purple blooming on my face" signifies a bruise given to her by her lover.) It is assumed that the following night, she'd see him with another woman. Upset beyond belief, rage begins to boil up inside, and she grows to plot her lovers demise. As days go by she would curse the woman who took her partner from her, and after some time, she confronts her partner and kills him. (I believe she cut out his heart, based off of the ending lyrics. The idea of her believing it's rightfully hers goes literally, I suppose.)
If this is wrong, do correct me. I'm German American and I don't know the full history behind this song. It's a beautifully composed piece as always and I enjoy listening to it! :]

      @TheSeth2003 3 роки тому +489

The word "gigil" doesn't have a direct translation in english, the purple blooming in her face is a metaphor. Gigil is that intense feeling that could be negative or positive, but in this one its negative

filipino here ! this is how i understood it based from the tagalog lyrics.
she doubted her husband but resulted in forgiving him and gave him the benefit of the doubt. "the purple blooming in her face" is just a metaphor for a rlly intense feeling as user kocchanbinch said. the husband did not hit her in any kind.
and when she finally spotted him with another woman irl, her line of trust snapped. she became angry at the woman (she insults the woman and called her a hag and told her that the husband didn't belong to the hag lmao) and heartbroken at the husband. (she monologues abt how the husband promised her that he'll always love her which yknow was a lie) then in a fit of rage, she murdered them both then and there in the bahay kubo (a traditional house in the Philippines) she spotted them in - that didn't even belong to either of them- this created a mess in the hut with their bodies mangled ; body parts scattered around the floor and walls.
and as you said, the heart that is now in her hands as the husband promised it would always be in.
fun fact! there's a certain law in the Philippines that makes it legal for a legally married woman to kill her husband and the person he's cheating with as long as she flees from the location she killed them in/where the couple lives in.
this is a rlly good translation, i loved the way how you articulated the story !!

For those wondering what those "Mirror with an Eye" are, those are Lover's Eye. Those aren't mirrors... In Europe back during Regency & the Early Victorian period, there was a love trend that I don't doubt was also known in the Philippines (which I wish to see someday cause I doubt our country hasn't tried that sh*t yet even in a short period of time). This love trend is to have someone or yourself paint a miniature portrait of your lover's eye and have your friends guess who it is...

Sabi mo ako'y ang tanging iibigin
    Salungat ang aking nadama
Patuloy-tuloy pa rin ang aking puso
    Naniwala sa ating sumpaan
    Bathala bakit nagkaganyan
    Ako bang may sala

    Tiwalang iningatang iyong pinatay
    Bahay kubo dahil maliit

In this point, no one can judge the woman about her behavior, she love with a traitor to her feelings, that just torture her with silence and affairs. My analysis on this (by listening to the original song) compared to your description is that I don't think sympathy for the cheater is the focus here. I interpret the song is about the woman receiving and reading a letter at her desk from her ex some day who had disappeared for a long time for another woman with the reason that he couldn't resist her.
Perhaps... The point is that the composer didn't mean to convince the listener to sympathize the cheater but rather the composer wanted you to be in the perspective of the cheated woman reading the letter and how heart struck, confused, and irritated it must've been if some day you were in the same scenario where you've been sent a text message by your lover for the same thing. The composer wanted to make you feel and think what the cheated woman feels. That's my subjective interpretation of the song.

Just to clarify its not really a cover of anything it's just that because of "Ako'y iniwan mo" i was motivated to write Ang Cariñosa

@@Steampianist Ah, well either way. You made a wonderful mix between the two songs ("Ako'y iniwan mo" and "Cariñosa") with your own dark twist which is really cool. And with the modern music we have rn, it's not everyday to hear cultural music to be put to use which I think is a great source of interpolation (borrowing a melody of a song but with your own rendition) besides Electro Swing music (using 30s swing music mixed with electronic music). Good job! :)

I feel like the mirrors mean something-they signify the emotions that the woman felt during the course of events in this song.
Black tears mean she’s sad, grieving or sorrowful. Having discovered her (presumably) husband’s escapades (2:25), the tears started to run down when she realized that he broke her trust. The eyes kept crying for the remainder of the song up to the part where she finally did what she wanted to do (4:34).
The cracks in the mirror mean that she’s furious. The first time they appear is when she’s cursing the woman whom the husband had an affair with (3:28) and the second time is when she finally killed him. No sadness at that point, just pure hatred (4:34).
The red eyes symbolize her murderous intent, which first appeared when she sang about the limbs barely fitting inside the nipa hut (3:09). Notice how she decided to hold the dagger until the end, except for the times where she had to conceal it whenever he’s around (4:01). Just like the tears suddenly disappearing, the eyes go back to brown once she takes his life.
That’s just my interpretation though!!! Feel free to reply with your insights and suggestions ahah✨
(Oh my god I haven’t checked the comments section since this song came out on Spotify😭 Thanks guys! Today I learned that those mirrors are actually pieces of lover’s eye jewelry and she starts holding the knife at 2:25… probably means that killing was just a fleeting thought on the back of her mind at first upon immediately seeing him.)

Gosh, this- this is the one. This gave me the chills. Everything was executed so perfectly from start to end.
I love the Filipino folk song instrumental which is so well put and alluring to hear, to top it off with the amazing lyrics that tell a disturbing and pitiful perspective of the young lady as she slowly goes into madness by love, jealousy, obsession and rage. Along with that, there's the details of the art and animation that completes everything with the story and is eye opening to the lyrics.

If any of you guys wanna understand the theme or story of this song. I'm a Filipina, and I can already catch where this is going even with the dark themes.
The story is about two lovers. The most cliché thing from Filipino love/romantic shows is that there will always be drama in the way. The lady is in love with this man, so does the man she loves. They promised that they will be together forever. As a Filipino, you would hear that phrase. A lot. And all of us know that that promise will never last until one woman decided to steal her lover. Which leads the lady to be heartbroken. Started grow in jealousy. Even tried to beg to the man she loves to stay with her, but he changed his mind and forgotten the promise. Describes him to be unfaithful and decided to love the new woman.... Then here's the dark part. When the lady sang Bahay Kubo, which is actually actually a song of living in a household. She started to go rouge and chose to kill the man who betrayed her. As you can see. She stabbed him through the heart.

Even though I grew up around the language starting when I was 6 (moved back to the Philippines, was an immigrant in another country before that hence why English became my first language, it didn't help how I studied at a school that had English as its primary language)
I still tend to make mistakes when trying to figure out which suffixes to add to a verb (ex: Kailangan kong MAGtulog, MAtulog o tUMulog?) and aaahhhhhh my goddd it's frustrating. I can't imagine being completely new to the language and having to figure all of this out from nothing!!
But people still manage to do it, which is, y'know, such a flex. Tagalog's ranked at a 3 for its learning difficulty by the FSI which isn't all too far from the highest ranking of 4 which only contains 4 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I'd bet that if we kept our precolonial writing script of Baybayin, it'd probably be ranked higher.
