  • In this VladTV exclusive, Canadian Reggae musician, rapper and singer Snow sat down with DJ Vlad and detailed his life and career. He talked about being born and raised in Toronto before beating two attempted murder charges. After dodging major prison time, Snow explained how he got into music and attended Reggae house parties. After recording "Informer," which would go on to become the biggest-selling Reggae song of all time, he had to witness the record's success from prison. Snow went on to discuss recording his first and second albums, as well as the issues and lawsuits he was faced with after his success. He also detailed his partnerships and collaborations with brands and artists, such as Yahoo!, Scott Storch, Cool N' Dre, and Daddy Yankee. To hear more, check out the full interview.

One thing about us Jamaicans. We love when people from other cultures embrace our culture. We don't care if you're from Australia, Canada, Germany, where ever. As long as the art is good. We will show the support and give you the love. It's when you don't acknowledge that you're using our culture. It's when you don't give us our roses, we have a problem. Love it, embrace it, use it. Just acknowledge us and where it came from. Big up Snow for that. One song they forgot to mention that was remixed and re-released, became a hit was "The Train is Coming" by Shaggy and Ken Boothe. The original by Ken Boothe.

I remember getting the cassette of 12 inches of Snow in 1993. I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I remember that I went to Puerto Rico for that summer. I remember playing it for the kids out there, and they lost their fucking minds. They wanted to play it all day. Someone eventually got me for my tape when it was time to leave.
When I came back to the States, I started getting CDs as I had gotten a CD player. I bought this kid's CD book with a couple of CDs in it. 12 Inches of Snow was one of the CDs. Haven't stopped listening to that album for almost 30 years now. Cant tell you how many memories in my life are associated with Snow's music.
The 90s were a magical time for hip hop and entertainment in general.

And no one joked on him. He was not to be trifled with. I remember saying hello to him when he was with lots of people, most popular artists don’t have time to say hello, but Snow always said hello and went a step further to ask how you were doing and blessed you. I'm from Blake street in Toronto another Jamaican neighborhood and yes Snow I won the excellence award in grade 6, I'm 7 years younger than Snow but went to highschool with one of his siblings at MPC, so I know exactly what he's talking about.
I see Americans on here who say "I thought he was a poser" without understanding Toronto isn't a segregated American city, I was a white kid in a Jamaican 7th day Adventist church but when my mom got sick there was a meal train from the congregation, we all struggled but no one went hungry no matter what color your skin.

no they didn't. He chose to come on all the same shows and shit because that's where the attention and money is generated. And even vanilla ice was actually respected for his underground work. If people felt a certain type of way that's on them. And both artist had to deal with that.

Ironically, as much as Snow had way more street credibility and he was certainly more talented musically than Vanilla Ice, he had a similar problem ultimately musically like him. He couldn’t really make all his different musical influences his own. Plus, dancehall reggae is a very difficult genre to begin with to even try to maintain that kind of level of mainstream success in America.

This is a bit of a shame, man. Around the @14:00 mark when the subject of Marvin Prince came up. This dude wouldn’t have a career at all if it wasn’t for Prince. I went to Ajax High School with Marvin. We lived about a minute walk up the street from eachother and hung out a good bit. He’d play me demos of this crazy Irish white dude he met that sounded Jamaican. We were pretty close friends so he’d tell me about pretty much everything that was goin on with the two of em. The house parties, New York with Shan, the Arsenio thing, the tours, etc. Then eventually told me the entire sad story of how he got completely cut off and done dirty by Snow and the people around him. The crazy lawsuit…everything. Marv had a HUGE part in this cat’s career. His own mother said so herself in the documentary you can find on UA-cam. Praised and credited Prince for what he did for her son. So shittin on him on Vlad is pretty uncool, man.

Meanwhile I was getting grounded for a doggystyle or chronic album. Yet, Snow is and was actually a badass who grew up with gangsters and allegedly Dre is mostly a studio gangster lol. Well Snoop is a Crip and was a gang banger who became a successful rapper. That Chronic album with Dre & Snoop as well as Doggystyle goes hard. They spoke of what was going on in the hood. I can see why your Mother wasn't ok with their music. Those albums have illicit lyrics. Dre may not have been a gangster he is a real one. He was around people who did that type stuff.
