  • If when you first start the cycle on your dishwasher and you hear a rattle or grinding noise it's likely because there's an object caught in the machine's drain pump. This pump runs for a few seconds at the start of a cycle in order to drain the tub and also periodically throughout the cycle.
In my case a sliver of bone was caught in there, making a sound like a small stone being rattled inside a plastic box. It didn't go away after a week so I figured out how to access the drain pump.
Kudos to this video • Samsung dishwasher gri... for the concept. Thankfully this model lets you access the pump from the side of the machine. Please unplug your machine before sticking your hand in there!
Also, I will note that the insulation blanket goes under that right-hand metal access panel, not over it as I had it arranged in the video.

I just want to say thank you for this video! I was having LC and OC error code issues, I had a tech come out twice, they quoted me $600.00 to replace the pump(without even pulling the machine out and looking).. Turns out, it was a piece of porcelain trapped in the pump housing.. I was 10 minutes from buy-ing a new dishwasher and this video save me a lot of $$$ .. Thank you !!!

Thanks for the vid, David. I have the same OC error- water is not draining at all.. I have everything pulled out... It would be nice if it was just clogged, I'm assuming it's the pump though

Great video.. I was getting and LC error and it wasn't draining. Leaking water since it couldn't drain. Took pump motor off and a thumbtack was the culprit. Thanks for the video.

How the heck does a thumbtack get through the filters to the drain pump?

No...when turning the pump, there is a locking tab that you need to press down on at the bottom of the pump. This will allow you to easily turn the pump to remove. Then when you put it back on, it will click back into its locking tab. You just stripped the plastic locking tab and now your pump is not properly secured to the sump and will most likely leak down the road. You should make a new video with the proper pump removal technique and remove this as you are probably causing people to do more damage to their appliance.

Agreed. Bad advice in this video. I broke the locking nubs on my pump. Do not force any of the plastic parts on this machine. They are all designed to be twisted or locked into place in some way.

I think we have different dishwasher models; my pump had no locking tabs. Gotta use common sense when taking things apart!

Thanks for this! I’m having trouble getting enough leverage to turn it open. Maybe I’m just worried it will break, but any other tips to get it open?

Do you have any suggestions on a dishwasher not draining but has never been used for an actual wash cycle? I've had it over a year but recently got around to setting it up (long story). But I ran it thru a test cycle. Didn't realize the water didn't drain all the way out and it rusted the micro filter and left the inside brown. Wasn't until I ran the setup again and realized the water hadn't drained fully.

If its never used and it's not draining properly- first check the installation of the drain hose.
If it's connected to the disposal see if the exit points plastic cap (undue the drain hose from disposal to check) is punched out completely. If it's still there or just half way punched out water won't be able to come out.
Check and see if you have the high loop. With no high loop all the water will just feed back into the unit and put a lot of pressure to your drain pump and eventually go bad.
If all that checks out then see if anythings clogged up inside the hose and then if thats good order and replace the drain pump

Any thoughts on what the issue might be if my dishwasher shut down mid cycle, didnt drain and has no power to it? I checked the circuit breaker as well.. same model as this

I had same issue. Turned out to be power connection. The wires weren't tight and melted the wire nut. Worked on and off then stopped totally after it fried. Luckily there was enough length to fix it.
