Can you imagine if a robbery really occurred and the crooks spent a ton of time grinding their way into the safe only to find a spoon collection and Monopoly money? That'd be priceless. I still chuckle at the time my own house got broken into and the crooks left empty handed because there was absolutely nothing they wanted to take!
It's amazing how far spoon technology has come over the years. Even thought composite and polymer spoons are very practical, you just can't replace the look and feel of a hand made wood and metal spoon.
I'm surprised that you don't have that collection in a temperature and humidity controlled enclosure. I know your HVAC system is obviously pretty high end, but that is some valuable merchandise to leave exposed like that. I can already see the wood on that 2007 model is a bit dried out.
I really wish I could work for you. I enjoy going the extra mile and doing extra details to make the job come out truly premium like old craftsman used to do a century ago. Unfortunately, lots of people don't want to pay the little bit extra for that type of quality! I'm so glad that you have this more premium type of mentality.
I've always been curious if it's a hidden door why not do the ship-lap all the way up to the top so you don't reveal your hidden door with the horizontal cuts?
Hey Matt, great vids. I'm a finishing carpenter in Australia. I cannot for the life of me understand how you guys get super precision quickly using the imperial system. I operate at 0.5mm accuracy running lasers most of the time. Looking at an imperial tape where it doesn't even have micro numbers on it and brain crunching fractions must eat up so much time. I can guarentee if you went to metric, you would save a ton of money on time and an even higher standard of finish. I get that it's what your used to, but man, give me millimters and meters any day of the week. There is a reason most US scientists use metric. You should apply metric to building science as well, be the leader in the US building industry, go metric. Keep up the great work.
why do you need micro numbers when I have 1/16 or 1/32( depending on the tape measure) on a tape measure? That's plenty of tightness for carpentry work.
Hear! Hear! I'm with ya John. I really really REALLY wish we'd switch over to the metric system. It already is the "official" measurement system of the USA but everyone still uses #(*%(#ing imperial. And can we switch to torx head screws while we're at it? For the love of all that is Holy! Gah!
As a fork collector myself - what to compliment your awesome spoon collection - difficult to find people who really appreciate these fine utensils! Your valuable collection should be nice and safe.
How did the guy who was inside the alcove helping to steer the safe in get out of there? Did he have to crawl over the top of the safe? Or is he permanently entombed in there? As Mike Rowe often says, "Safety Third"!
I’ve always tried to get customers to use the best hardware possible. Sure it costs more, but as time passes cheap hinges have no adjustments for settling or warpage or twisting of the doors themselves. Not to mention cheap hinges just don’t open near as far as the more expensive hinges will. I’ve had to replace so many cheap hinges over the years from screws stripping out that’s usually from someone opening a door too hard and putting stress on the cheap hinges. In the long run the more expensive hinges are worth every penny and you’ll be glad you have them somewhere down the line needing to make adjustments at some point!
Any concerns with screw pullout in the lvl material? With plywood I think of face screwing to be a lot stronger that edge screwing. I didn't see what screws were used on the door.
I'd love to see the hardware that incorporates a switch for LED lighting. The old ones had the high voltage switch and took up a ton of room in the hinge. They have new ones for low voltage with 18awg wire.
I forgot your house has a first floor master. Was waiting to see how you managed to get a (literal) ton of safe up the stairs in a relatively finished house. 🤣👍️
Aren't the cladding side hinge mounting screws going into very weak wood? I assume the cladding isn't structural wood? Were the hinge mounting holes strengthened at all?
Question not dealing with the video. Can I install a water heater booster and Tank in just my kitchen? For my pot filler? Taking my 125F water up to like 180F maybe 190F? To short boil up time? Also using it as a mini thermal battery to use extra solar power in the day (on a timer) and keep it hot via tank? I feel like the tank would only need to be a 6-10gal max which you can get for less than $300. Yes I could add a Tankless small unit. But curious about using peak solar production for it.
Hey Matt! You mention builders first for your door. Do you have other recommendations for stave core doors in the Austin area (I’m local as well) and estimated pricing for a standard sized door. Also do you have any input on Sugatsune MFU system in terms of maintenance and reliability over time Thanks for all the great content!
hi matt totally off topic saw your vid on zip w 2 inch iso on outside i live near knoxville n we use vinyl siding dose vinyl work with iso say 1 1/2 thick foil bk ?
Underneath the hardwood floors, there is insulation. Isn’t the weight of the safe, per square foot, much more than the foam insulation underneath the slab can take?
I collect spoons 🥄 also, but mine are sterling and from all over the world, I have 6 Faberge (the 🥚 guy) silver enamel spoons 🥄 worth about $10,000. So yeah, my spoons are in a big safe too, but inside a safe deposit box.
Not really a fan of the touch latch. Seems if somebody just accidentally bumped the wall they would open your "secret" safe. And couldn't you have mitered the top of the shiplap to make the door cut less obvious? As is, the horizontal black line is a pretty dead giveaway that something unusual is there. I mean, you have unbroken lines running seven stories just a few feet away to show you could continue that to the ceiling of that nook easily.
“I’m in a clients house.” Matt we know who’s house this is lol
literally watched him build it lol
So my cold open was too kitschy?
@@buildshow not too sure what that means. But you've inspired me to start my own channel on my new build!

Those hinges look amazing, adjustment is critical for any door.

I’m glad you went with a Sturdy! We own one and there’s just no other company that does it better. All real, all steel!
Matt we recognize your house xD
🤣😂😅
And we clearly see the closet doors under the stairway. Those weren't so well hidden.

That cold open was hilarious.
Would have loved to see how you get the safe off the air sled.
You missed april 1st by a few days 😅. Great video though!
I'm so going to install a hidden safe in my new house too!!! Thanks man!!!
Salad fingers would LOVE that spoon collection
Wow, I remember using those hinges around 12 years ago in Terry Town then again maybe 8 years ago. Very awesome hinge!!!
Matt. 4 kids is plenty. You don't need a secret spooning closet.
I was really hoping to see a powerwall in there.
Love that fancy spoon collection!!!!
The safe sled is cool and all, but did you really have to entomb that worker at 17:25?
How did the guy who was inside the alcove helping to steer the safe in get out of there? Did he have to crawl over the top of the safe? Or is he permanently entombed in there? As Mike Rowe often says, "Safety Third"!
He crawled over the top.
There’s a SECOND hidden door to access the back 🤪
@@buildshow glad to hear it. Even with your state of the art ventilation system, I'm sure he would have started to smell really bad after a few weeks!

Damn that guy was REALLY nice to let you to show us that. Risky. Lol
11:18 did you use power grab and pin nails to fasten that exact piece of shiplap you routed for the hinge? super cool project
well played!
Thanks for sharing!
nice to see a responsible spoon owner in these times
Thanks, the procedure is very valuable
The client 🤪🤣😆😂
Great job holding the vacuum 🤣

Rumor has it that man remains behind the safe to this day
A week late. That would've been a great April fool's video opening.
Smart to use a good old fashioned dial lock instead of one on the electronic locks.....
My thoughts too
Really awesome Matt! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
That monopoly money was almost more than I could stand.

Why not stagger and scarf cut the ship lap? You can run boards longer above the door.

How did you get the safe off of the air sled once it was in position? Thx,
Greatest intro yet Matt! And yes the Monopoly money is hardcore money!
Underneath the hardwood floors, there is insulation. Isn’t the weight of the safe, per square foot, much more than the foam insulation underneath the slab can take?
How was it getting the air sled out from under the safe once in place?
How do you get the Air Sled out from under the safe after it's in place?
The client's logo is awfully similar to yours... lawsuit?? xD
I went to Builders FirstSource today and the door specialist had NO IDEA what a stave core door was. =( I was like, but MATT SAID you had it!!! 😁
I'm not sure what would be more traumatizing for an intruder, getting shot, or getting spanked. Beautiful details Matt.
No guns there!
Do you still even do some of the building?
'It's not very hard' says the guy holding the vacuum! Lol
Matt, did you consider the James Bond moving bookcase as a hidden door?
Matt forgot to release this video on April 1
How do you get the air bags out from under the safe?..........and under the safe to begin with for that matter.
While inflated they slide out one at a time by tipping it back slightly
All those fingers between the safe and door jam when the video is on fast forward - my heart almost stopped.
Is that guy still stuck behind the safe?
17:36 What happened to the guy on the inside? Casualty of safe installing? 😂
“Client’s house” lol
Wow! .. Was that a Real, Walmart only translucent plastic spoon? I been looking for that ....
Kick ass.
I couldn't think of a good way to cover the portal to hell I have in my pad 🤣
What a needy client
Wait, how did you route the door jamb?!
Awesome
That client's house looks familiar.
I keep my spoons closer to the bed when I might need them 🤣
I was not only a member of the hair club for men, I was also a client
April 1st was days ago!
How did the guy behind the safe get out?!
In conclusion, break into Matt’s house he’ll blast you.
I’m really accurate with my “spoons”
HA HA HA! Love it.
No mag locks on that door?
I love your jokes :D
0:05 "I'm in a client's house" Ummmmm..... is the client your wife?
My little joke to start the video
HINT: when you try to conceal a door, don't put a handle on it. [ ha, ha, ha ]. Nice work!
"Clients house" .... looks really similar to YOUR house LMAO
I wonder if two half-doors might work and be lighter.
yeah ! this is my House :P
Is that one guy still trapped behind the safe?
The intro could have been a good April Fools short
Flexing that Monopoly money. 🤑
So there's a guy entombed behind the safe for all time ?
@17:25
y'all left a guy behind the safe,
its built with blood and sweat, literally.
Is the guy still stuck behind the safe? 17:18
(It's a joke)
hahaha love it
The top mini space was monopoly papers

Sturdy safes are good, but TL rated safes are better. Sturdy used to be reasonably priced.
I'll send you some spoons too...
dollar dollar bill ya’ll
I thought you would show off your hidden vertical cast iron pipe.
19:13😂
Sir, your wife went overboard with the shiplap.
