  • This video is about how to play Lion Rampant, the medieval wargame rules. This video shows how a wargame in the Crusader period works using these rules. One force is from the Military orders army list, the other is a force from the Saladin list.
    It is 80 minutes long so you may prefer to watch it in smaller parts. I tried to make this video shorter, but with so much to cover, I could not do so. I hope you enjoy it, and it helps you understand the rules more. Please ask any questions you like, I will answer them if I can.

    I just spotted an error. At 28.36 I said the skirmishers need 7 or under, of course I meant to say 7 or over. Dohhhh. Sorry about that. I am sure there are other minor errors, I hope not many though.

    I just spotted a mistake in how I played the religious leader. He only gets to use his special ability once per turn, not on every attack in that turn. So I used it too often. Not that he used it more than once every turn, but it was a mistake on some of the turns. Sorry.

    Looks like the rules I've been looking for for small scale skirmish games. Saga battleboards were getting me down 😅. Ordered the 2nd Ed and planning my next army around this for 100 yrs War era.

    Thank you for helping realise that Lion Rampant are the rules that I've been looking for! Most of my gaming was WRG 6th, back in the day, these rules seem to be bringing back the fun into Ancient/Medieval wargaming. I'll be madly converting them for 15mm Sumer armies.😂 Am currently rebasing!

      I like them. Not everyone does, but we have quite a few club members that have now tried them out and they all agree they are simple and are fun. That is what it is all about. :)

    Excellent presentation even allowing for the odd mistake. Our group was playing "Sword & Spear" but we found these took to long for our 2-2 1/2 hour Wednesday evening meetings. Had our first "Rampant" game last week and though hardly a simulation thoroughly enjoyed learning the game. We prefer to leave all figures on the table and mark losses with dice. Again, great stuff, subbed. Cheers.

    just found this video a great game but at least in the 2nd edition one fail will no longer end a turn and with your alternate rule you can ignore the two fails to give a "better" flow to play

    Shot in the dark here. To anyone around the comments: Are there any Medieval tabletop games similar in play style to that of Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game? I know, I know, it’s a GW product, but it’s great! And I’m looking at getting into medieval/dark ages minis as a new project for painting. Might as well find a game to play as well…. This game seems awesome, but I’m trying to get away from ‘unit’ mechanics. More akin to MESBG where every mini can chose to move independently.. anything come to mind? Deus Vult might be good with the Burn & Loot book, but that’s really the only other one I can think of. Warlord has Shieldwall… anything else???? Let me knowwww

    • @wargameshobby
      @wargameshobby  9 місяців тому +2

      I don't know of any. But I remember some years ago there was a skirmish set of rules where each figure moved independently, but because of that the force on each side was only about a dozen figures each, which for me is not enough. But there must be some out there. I will ask around.

    • @shakazulu301
      @shakazulu301 9 місяців тому +2

      @@wargameshobby the supplement for Deus Vult seems reasonable. Burn and Loot. Units move independently, but there a still a unit coherency… I’m gonna get that book soon 😌

    Nice video Alec.... I think my issue with the rules is the fact that all orders fail when one does. But when we can all get together maybe we can try a game using my Normans in Sicily forces

    • @wargameshobby
      @wargameshobby  3 роки тому +1

      I agree it can be harsh. We can either drop that rule or allow two fails instead of just the one. Although it does stop the game being predictable, and should even out. But as I say I am happy to try something different. 👍

    Hi,great help thanks. One question, I can’t seem to find where it says to half dice for skirmishing. I found the -1 to hit in the Mounted Yeomen rules for skirmish. If you can point me in the direction to look that would be great as I am painting stuff and planning some games after lockdown.

    • @wargameshobby
      @wargameshobby  3 роки тому +2

      Haha, you got me there, you spotted my deliberate mistake. 😬 That is what happens when you play several sets of rules, you mix them up. Of course you are correct, they still roll the normal amount of dice, but at a -1 on the roll, so they hit on 6 rather than 5/6. As it happens it is the same chance of hitting, but that is no excuse. 😳 a slip of the tongue on my part. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍

      Hi Iain, no, they are not as flexible as light cavalry who can do a skirmish move, so move/shoot or shoot/move. Heavy cavaly with a bow have to remain stationary while shooting, which can be handy at times.

    • @wargameshobby

      In my bolt-hole (garage) I can only manage a 4x3, which is fine for a small game. But usually I play 6x4, or even larger depending on the size of the force. A 24 v 24 point games needs 6x4 really.
