10-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Sending ‘Threatening Messages,’ Cops Say

- A 10-year-old Florida boy was arrested after cops say he sent "threatening messages." According to reports, the fifth-grader sent an image of assault rifles to a friend and texted, "I bought this" and "get ready for water day," a gathering for students with good grades. The other boy's father called the cops and within hours, the 10-year-old was in cuffs. Now Dereck Marquez, the 10-year-old’s father, exclusively tells Inside Edition his son is still in custody.
"He was a good kid." "He's never been in trouble." "He's never hurt anyone." Things parents say after their child hurts or kills someone.
Sometimes that’s how it is, kid probably thought he was being a badass but that’s no excuse
Does no one own up to their mistakes nowadays?
He's 10... This doesn't seem this crazy to me. If he was in Europe he wouldn't be able to get his hands on guns, so there would literally be nothing to be worried about, do we really have to incarcerate all kids who send threats?
When I was 11 I told my "friends" I was gonna stab them with a knife after they broke into my parents house and stole $6000. I was just trying to scare them, I didn't plan on actually killing them, that's crazy.
I gotta tell you though, if the cops had taken it seriously like they do in the US, I would have gone to a psych ward or juvenile prison for a long time and I would have turned into a monster. I would have dedicated my life to destroying the society that destroyed me.
Other inmates would have taught me how to become a real criminal and how to fight.
But instead of that my parents sent me to California (from France) to start a new life in a better environment, surrounded by people who aren't criminals, and that approach saved me. Compassion saved my life.
Mass incarceration is NOT the answer.
@@RedLineShortFilms bro you threatening them makes sense, they robbed you bro. Completely different situations. This kid was just saying it for no reason!
@@ghastlytree5864 how do you know there is no reason? may be there was a good reason.
Sometimes scaring a kid straight is the best teaching method. They need to understand the consequences for their actions, joking about killing other kids isn't normal especially for a 10 year old.
Edit: If you're going to defend this kid, understand that the vast majority of school shootings were reported to the police prior to the kid shooting the school (dating back to columbine). Threats need to be taken seriously even if it's a 10 year old, otherwise people would be asking why the sheriff didn't act when the other parent reported before this kid shot up a school.
That kid doesn't look scared at all.
You have no idea of the context on this story. I find it disgusting that people would think it is ok to handcuff a child and lead him out for the world's media to use it for political gains.
The very fact that media cameras were theirs to capture the arrest is extremely worrying. The media has already shown that they will lie when it comes to children.
Doesn't sound good for me

@@TheBootyWarriorUnstoppable Its a joke until its not anymore and something happens

@@biscuitboy8040 Well, if he wanted to shoot up the place, he would've long done it by now, so it's safe to say this one was a joke.
Little kids don't look affected because they don't live in reality yet.
I never talked about guns and hurting someone when I was ten in a “humorous way”
Hurting someone?
Tiger! Whats up man lol
I didn't joke about guns but I did joke about hurting other kids. Mostly the kids that bullied me. I think if it wasn't for shows like Dragon Ball and video games, I wouldn't have grown up wanting to be like the hero of those stories I loved. As an adult, I'm normally the one who tries the hardest to help people. If I didn't have that goal of wanting to be like the hero, I know I would have grown up to be a very violent and destructive person. Kids who joke and fantasize about death don't have a positive goals like I did. They need better role models.
Late bloomer?
Unfortunately we have to take these threats seriously. He’s so young, such a shame. Parents please talk to your kids.
@engineer gaming stop using mental health as an excuse for everything
It looks like we all agree. The sheriff did the right thing. 🇺🇸

This is a serious issue that can’t take slightly, so many lives vanished. And need the parents to watch their kids. It’s heart breaking to see a young kid in a mug shot but this is a lesson’s to be learned and need to send a message to everyone.
Ur either old or an complete npc cuz ain’t nobody believing this
This reminds me of when I was in 7th grade. I was in a private Catholic school, and I passed out in the middle of the school year, during lunch, and I was sent home. I had a bully, and when I came back, my friend told me, "We all prayed for you, but your bully, she prayed for you to die, she told us". What kind of monters? Who is teaching them these things?
how is the dad, an army veteran, confused why his boy is receiving such severe consequences? Absolute denial on the severity or acceptance that his son could end up this way.
Spoiled kid
Shame on him 🤮. He should confiscate the cellphone of his son. We didn’t have cellphone at that age.
hes confused by his sons decisions and this whole situation. it could of been avoided hence why he said his son didn’t understand the gravity of the message. wasnt defending him, just disappointed in him.
That why I don’t have respect for veterans for those who don’t deserve and that man don’t deserve to be respected to be a veteran
Joking is illegal now?
“It was the stupid humor of a child” is what we need to pay attention to and not just ignore. This can prevent soooo many massacres. Just because a child doesn’t have a bad history doesn’t mean he/she isn’t capable of doing anything crazy.
Most killers did not had a history.
The kid doesn't even look scare or crying as I would assume for a kid being arrested
you have never been involved in fights? what if the kid threatened to send a nuclear bomb ? would he still be arrested?
Lmao I make jokes like this everyday they just ignore me
I feel like the appropriate people should pay attention to it. Not you, me and the entire world? Doesn't anyone else feel this didn't have to be broadcasted news?
*Only if adults & teens took these kinds of threats more seriously, lives wouldve been saved.*
I stand by this arrest. Cops need to take these things seriously because of the times we live in. And it’s not enough for a parent to say ‘I know my kid; they would never do this’ or ‘it’s just words; people say things they don’t mean all the time’. That’s not good enough. Children need to be taught that free speech is a wonderful right but it comes with consequences. You can’t say something that implies intended harm to yourself or anyone else and if you do, you face the consequences for your actions. No parent wants to see their kid arrested for these things, but better it goes like this rather than do nothing and someone gets hurt.
Exactly
It doesn’t matter if you meant it as a “joke” or not.
A threat is a threat, and not free speech
People keep saying "I know my kid" then when this kid kills a friend over Slender Man, "I don't know what happened"
All school shooter parents say that...
Ok boomer or npcs, y’all old folks cant stand jokes no more.
LOOK people, WE can’t have it both ways! We can’t tell the cops to do something and then when they do something, we bash them for it! Parents need to have that conversation with their kids about joking this way. It is not a joke and the consequences could cause them to be arrested! EVERY single threat needs to be taken seriously no matter the age of the person! I have two teenage sons who I’m pretty sure would never joke like this but I’m about to have that conversation with them anyways just so they know! The cop wasn’t in the wrong to do what he did by arresting this 10 yr old IMO.
You dam right 💯

@@renatamitchell519 I told both my sons after posting this that the cops arrested him for making a threat and my youngest son said “as they should”. He 12 and he’s gets it. Parents need to talk to their kids about this especially their sons.

I hate when parents immediately say “they’re just a kid” or something along that lines. I understand how they would feel (I have 2 kids) but, I would let my kid learn their lesson. Messing with other children’s lives & feelings & safety, that is 100% not okay.

Regardless if it was a joke or not it's still a threat of violence, he needs to be held accountable. As a 10 year old YOU KNOW that is wrong.
I didn't see a threat made. A photo of guns, the 10 year old obviously could never buy and not in possession of and a statement combined with a specific day. I see what people want to make of this. I see the two statements. But he is 10 and texting. Could one statement be a time lapse? Possibly. But go and speak to the kid. Find out what he meant. If it was a poor joke, then handle it as such with the parents and Law Enforcement. Get a mediator and counselor. Then, take the kids phone. Remove his access to the internet unless it is for school and supervised.
A 10 year old doesn’t know much at all. They barely wipe their own butts…. Seriously??? You ever try to talk to a 5th grader? You ever raised a kid?? They’re all psychos who want to poke dead things with sticks. Held accountable for what??? Using google? Sending not okay texts??

@@Takokujin07 But it wasnt a threat... I can make jokes about rape or killing co workers if i so felt like it. Unless it is happening, there's nothing anybody can rightfully do about it.
I agree totally with the officer, better safe than sorry, it's good that he sends that message, and uses him as an example
So now you agree with the officer? Because you didn't when Derek Chauvin tried restraining an unruly suspect.
Derek Chauvin and his goons killed someone, and thought that they were above the law, whole different situation, they could of just hog tied him and left him on the ground, but no they all got on top of his body and suffocated him
Mental health is a real issue.
People have to stop making excuses for their children.
what he did was wrong, but do you think that because of this he deserves his whole future to be ruined? This will sadly follow him for the rest of his life, he might not be able to get a job in the future. I agree that there needs be to consequences for what he said but, I think that this should have been handled privately between the kid, his parents and the police, They should not have posted a 10 year old kids face on social media. I not defending his actions at all, but hes only 10.
Hold everyone accountable, no matter what age.
On one hand, I get what the dad is saying but on the other hand, I get what the police were doing and they were not taking this lightly after what has happened recently in Texas which should not be forgotten ever.
Yes, kids do things that they might not fully understand at times but just think of what this kid said in a text to another student by sending a photos of four rifles and telling of seeing them at "water day".
Also, the dad is in the military so he might have guns at home which the kid might see, though I am sure the dad is responsible in locking up his weapons if he does have them at home.
Father should be in jail too. Why was his son near the weapons?
Wow very brave for those police to arrest a 10 year old kid
You never know.
@@starsfalldown1234567 Its a google image

I don’t think he should have been taken to prison
as a parent you can't defend the boy when you know he meant harm when he sent those messages. they failed as parent big time.
The kid isn't showing any kind of remorse...if that could be me 10 years old arrested by police...I would have been crying and wailing like crazy
Xactly
And pretty scary...😮

The father needs to be seeking therapy for his son instead of trying to convince the world that it’s ok for kids to send real threats. As long as dad makes excuses for him, he will have a album full of mugshots by the time he’s 18.
We all did dumb stuff like this when we were 10.
If he had been 16 I'd agree with you, but he's 10

Idk where you come from or who raised you but threatening to shoot your peers at the age of 10 is NOT normal for a child. I stand behind that . We need send a good message to kids today. If nothing is done they will keep killing their classmates.
I think this is ridiculous. Do you really believe a 10 year old can buy 4 weapons?? Cmon man. Stupid...yes...criminal...no.
Bro I understand it's the attorneys job to defend the kid but is that really the best argument you got?💀
Bro read my mind
Yes sir, she said what she said. When all else fails, stick with the narrative. Can you believe it? 🤦🏽♀️
Lol... Thought I was the only one
Of all the things that people have expressed in these comments, I think the greatest area of agreement might be that the boys attorney is the worst sort of trash. She’s probably going to have a very successful career.
She’s clearly not been a defense attorney for very long
Raise your child better. It’s easy to say “it was just a joke” when you get caught. For once the cops didn’t take it lightly.
So you want a 10 year old to be arrested instead of just having better gun control laws?
@@Name-jw4sj Yes arrest him and send him and dad back across the border while we’re at it. I have no qualms with this lol.
@@Name-jw4sj Well, what do you think they should do about this 10 year old who threatened his school?

I stand with the sheriff. Kids can be so messed up, dont underestimate them. Next thing you'll know another shooting appears on the news. Be safe ya'll.
Nah, that sheriff is on a power trip. Complete overreaction.
My parents raised me and my siblings with discipline, none of us acted stupid like this young boy. If you knew my Dad, he wasn't afraid to use his belt especially if one of us got out of line.

Nah that kid has something wrong with him. Something’s disconnected. He had zero emotion.
this is just messed up why this is very serous parents need to talk to their kids about this its heartbreaking to see a 10 y.o do this.
he's gotta learn the hard way that you can't make threats like that
I see young kids a lot talking like this threats, racism, and bullying. Definitely not okay. They sometimes even think it’s funny or a joke but that behavior will catch up to them and people will take it serious. They need to be taught not to be delusional about it.

@Jiogurr Boomer = wisdom.... get over it
@Jiogurr Just hit me up when you wanna know something about life. I'm a little younger than the Boomer category so you'll have to find another way to make fun of me. Good luck!
@Jiogurr A lot of it depends on the current climate. When a horrific event occurs this dramatically raises the level of sensitivity people have. I don't think one person is gonna "start WW3" but one person can certainly shoot up a crowd of folks. Why do people make threats in the name of humor?
At this point his age doesn’t matter these threats should be taken seriously
after an 18 yr old killed 19 children under the age of 12 and 2 teachers, anything is possible, I don’t blame the police or the boy. I guess the boy did not understand the seriousness of this situation and I understand the police want to avoid a situation like this from happening ever again

It doesn't matter how old he is, kids need consequences and good job to the officer who exposed the kid. This could be anyones kid. He might of prevented another shooting.
I feel like posting the kid's picture in the media won't do anything but give him a little fame. Arresting him I am 100% fine with. Looking at how he was when arrested and his mug shot, he didn't even care.

Exactly!!
Another shooting might of been prevented. Then again, it might just be an angry kid.
How do we respond? Do we make him an outsider forever and put him on therapy until he is an adult?
Do we try to encourage social connections by making him do massive community service at several places in the community?
i feel bad for the kid, but the police got to send these messages that they’re not gonna mess around anymore
I stand by The sheriff's decision. This needs to be taken very seriously.
Every criminals parent (Mom especially): "He was such a good kid. He never got into trouble. He would never hurt anybody."
The problem is simple. It all begins at home. Parents have failed their children and themselves.
Never say never dad.
Parenting is the culprit. The dad should be ashamed of what the kid did instead of deflecting.
Because phone's don't raise the kids... and UA-cam isn't their replacement parent now days.
