The Holy Grail of hardware saturation. I have one and you couldn't pry it from my cold dead hands :)

Quality of harmonics, no wonder why it’s price 🤙🏼

I like this unit .... it's a subtle effect but the way it adds to the 3D perception and depth of sound on top of the EQ enhancement is very nice indeed ... fattens things up nicely.

The plugin is just as useful. Great video!

WOW !!! Paul that is an insane amount of dough for the Vertigo VSM-2.

Yeah they aren't cheap. I try not to look at the price and focus on how much it improves the sound and what it brings to the table. Eye watering price for this one though.

In my opinion, it’s the best analog saturation box so far. The only one that comes close to a multiband-saturator and will also give you lots of control over the saturated bands. Also there’s incredible amount of headroom with this device. I had to chose between HG-2 and VSM2 and obviously went the Vertigo route. Worth every penny!

I have both and can confirm you made the right choice. The Vertigo VSM-2 is a Swiss army knife box.

like the plugin the MS preset

@jorisboulet8137 this one box the plugin falls well short of. I will do a comparison video on this as it's good to show the differences in the plugin compared to the hardware.

2 inserts?, is that correct, can you provide a couple examples of usage of these?

@danclark745 mid side encoder decoder for an EQ to turn the EQ into a mid side EQ. Parallel also so you add a wet dry mix to another unit.

Sorry, maybe my ears need more training (probably, surely...) but even with excellent headphones on and listening with my system in a setting I know well, I didn't find this device very interesting for the price. Apart from the far from subtle EQ and volume changes when it's turned on and off (and this outside of the ends of bars/sections when the beat and the energy are totally different from the rest and no one could judge in 1 second even Bob Katz), I didn't notice much more openness, space or even glue. The high end and the weight sometimes sound better but so would it with less expensive units like a good EQ. Feel free to shoot at will but it's my honest opinion and I stand by it. Maybe it's a matter of taste and yes, I am more trained for mixing than mastering, but if subtlety is the word here, then there should be proper volume matching to be able to judge. At least the meter on the Bettermaker Limiter (or EQ?) on top of the unit makes it a honest demo. The volumes are not matched, how can you all be so sure of your ears if you add a dB or two when turning the effect on? I wouldn't trust mine, but maybe it's for the better 😅. Anyway, I love this channel and even whining about technical details in these comments so thanks for the hard work and the will to share these hyper-expensive units with us mortals out there. And thanks for responding and contradicting me, it helps me open my eyes and ears more every day, that's exactly why I am here. Long live UA-cam 🤟

Why would anyone add saturation on 2bus anyway? 🤔 (we never get to hear more than 0.5sec without it so how could we judge?)

Saturation is one of the most important aspect of mastering if you ask me. I said to Nick when editing this video, there will 100% be someone moaning the time left between the unit being bypassed and active isn't enough. He said no chance even the most basic of ears could hear that. I said I bet you a beer within 10 comments someone will moan. Thank you, I will be having a beer on you at the Christmas drinks this year.

Do you earn your money doing Mastering? Saturation is actually mandatory on most of the material to get a high density that can compete with other commercial music. It's really weird you never tried saturation on the Master.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio It's an absolute disgrace how the time left between the unit being bypassed and active isn't enough to judge anything properly on this video.
(It's not, but I thought I'd get Nick to buy you another beer!) Cheers :)

I notice it pretty easily on my monitors especially on some of the songs with the guitar and horns, what are you using to listen to this test on? it sort of gives it a more 3d like depth and separation that you absolutely don't get with standard EQ and that only a carefully designed saturation unit could provide, I have the plugin version and while no its not as good it is pretty good for a plugin and cost way less then even just the face plate on the hardware LOL.
