- #2 Sebastian Voigt - Hands-On - Karacter - Culture Vulture - Analog Heat - Vertigo VSM-2 - Decapitator
Sebastian Voigt takes his turn on a selection of unique sounding saturation & distortion devices and compares it to his favourite saturation plugin, the soundtoys decapitator.
- Thermionic Culture Vulture 0:57, 12:09
- Elektron Analog Heat 3:23, 13:41
- Soundtoys Decapitator 6:29, 12:00
- Vertigo VSM-2 7:51, 15:56
- Elysia Karacter 10:02, 15:00
A big thank you to the manufacturers as well as Apke Tontechnik and DA-X Digital Audio Networx for lending out the gear.
All processed signals have been recorded with an Universal Audio Apollo 8 in 48 Khz 24bit, except the signal of the Elektron Analog Heat has been recorded directly via Overbridge/USB in 48khz 24bit.
What a great shootout, been looking for something like that for ages - very well done and gain matched too. THANK YOU! DANKE!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Just bought a Culture Vulture Super 15 and a Fat Bustard. I have been trying to find decent videos demoing them and thankfully came across this. I am very excited to get using my new toys. They just seem to WORK and sound right. Great demo thank you, I am subscribed now! 🙌
Thank you for subscribing! Since i am not posting too regularly, its always good to have the notification bell checked :)
Enjoy your new gear, happy to see videos about it!
Culture Vulture and VSM were my favorite. Amazing how the uad plugin versions were able to retain the same vibe. I use them all the time and sound was very recognizable on both. Great demo
Nice review man, thanks for doing this vid. I really like and prefer the VSM-2, sounds tight, with depth and 3D over the other units, stereo image never gets thin.. As soon as its activated that snare, wow!
Thanks Seb!
good content! keep them comming please :)
Great video, thanks.
"Lets try the big guy.."
Camera pans over the the Akai rythm wolf :P
Great comparison! Would love to see another comparison but on synthesizer sounds only.
Would be cool to get a black box hg2 & Louder than liftoff silver bullet also! Great vids keep it up
Great video again :-)
Great demonstration! Good track as well, reminds me of something from the '93 DOOM game with a modern twist lol
This is how you do a gear comparison video. Thumbs up.
Yeah, i like it!
Vertigo VSM-2 sounded the best to me by far, very pleasing harmonics. Probably why it's 7,200€
Very informative to see Mr. Voigt go through the same set of gear as Mr. Pooley :) Whose studio is this?
Thanks for this, what would your end conclusion be for the heat vs decapitator?
artistc sonic sculptering. would be interesting to hear the "VSM Vertigo" in combination with the "ESL Vertice" analog filterbank, or the "Schippman Ebbe und Flut"
Decapitator has an emulation of Culture Vulture. That's why they sound identical)
which hardware Harmonics Adder are advisable, beside the "vertigo vsm-2"?
Would be interesting processing with the Euterpe Vertice filterbank
Ufffff just lush
hidden promotion for Soundtoys....and Culture Vulture ^^
is A (ampex preamp) mode your favorite on Decap? looks like it's what you were using here. I'm not convinced--especially after this favorable comparison with the Thermionic--hw saturation is necessary, but tape is another story. Decap was a little brighter, was that the only difference?
is "Distortion" the same as adding harmonics (even + odd)?
Growing up playing guitar through tube amps the vulture just sounds right to me, as flexible as the heat is it’s just a bit to fizzy for my taste.
Vertigo would be nice but way out my budget!
dope video, culture vulture and vertigo sound awesome
kybobetancourt The Vulture is an awesome sounding piece of gear like all Thermionic Culture gear but never ever buy their stuff because it is cheaply made and will fail guaranteed. Totally over priced. Sad because it sounds great.
@@ryanstark2350 Supposedly it's better now.
@@robertszordykowski4919 I’ve got mine working fine now. I had to replace all the capacitors that were controlled by the front knobs. However, the one I have is actually the prototype Vulture. I have one of the first units and it’s different because it also has valve rectification. The reason mine has been so problematic is probably because it’s literally their first test unit. I have this by pure accident. The guy who sold it to me seemed to be unaware that it’s the prototype. It came from a studio so they were probably testing it.
Having said this, I’m not the only one that has had problems with their gear. It does sound fantastic though.
@@ryanstark2350 Yep I've read a bunch of unenthusiastic comments about Thermionic's build quality, but for the past couple of years they seem to have improved it. Anyway, fuck it, I'm saving up for a Vulture. I just like it too much.
I really love how the Heat destroys the drum loop, great sound
Trying to decide between the vulture super 15 with a spare 1500 vs the overstayer modular channel 🤔
Overstayer looks great but fear it would just lead me into a world of endless tweaking and indecision.
Do you have experience with it?
Thoughts anyone?
never used the dark color on the karacter :(
Did anyone here test the Looptrotter Sa2rate ?
Me here with my little Ruina and torcido
What track is this?
LOL
Last two modes on decapitatir are culture vulture emulations ,
THMIX is same has dry wet Frank in Mix satelite VSM-2
How would the "culture vulture" compare to the "aphex exciter"?
Need to use my Heat more, 2021 res.
I have all the others in software... but I’d love the Vertigo as Hw 🥰
Kick and hats sound much better on the Culture Vulture.
Vertigo VSM is £7k and doesnt have a dry/wet comtrol lol
It has a THD Mix for both the 2nd and the 3rd order generator. Its the most versatile device but it certainly has a price tag
The track sound awful really....too much distortion
(MIchael Wiggler) not if you really like the sound of distortion :)
See it as an exploration of possibilities. It's a workaround, testing 5 processors in 18 minutes :)
It’s techno bro. Distortion….
