- What do The Rocketeer, Captain America, and Indiana Jones have in common? Probably more than you think! In this video we attempt to uncover why The Rocketeer has become such an endearing cult-classic, where its inspiration comes from, how the concept of retrofuturism impacted its enduring popularity, and how it has unexpectedly influenced cinema to this very day...over 30 years after its initial release!
This is the first official episode of our Cult Classic Retrospectives Series!
If you're interested in the inspiration for this video, you can check out my analysis of the themes in Tron: Legacy that I made a while back: • The Philosophy of Tron...
It got me thinking about what makes cult-classics like these stick around so long...
As always, thank you so much for watching!

A close friend of mine, who's the son of a flight controller and who's flown aircraft ranging from WWII bombers to the Goodyear Blimp, swears to me up and down that this and "Wings" are the only two movies about flight that actually feel like what it feels like to fly. The terror of speed, the sudden wash of lift, the absolute freedom.
On his recommendation, I showed it to my mom, who avoided seeing this in the nineties because she isn't a popcorn-movie person, and she now praises it every chance she gets.
"...the sense of making art for the sake of art..." That's why we like the Rocketeer! It feels like it was just made for us all to have fun together!
Good job kid. 🕵♂️
You gotta do a deep dive of the comic. It's awesome
Thank you!
I would definitely like to make more Rocketeer-related content in the future, and the comics absolutely deserve their due! Not sure when I'll be able to get to it, but it's on my mind for sure. :)
@@disneymagicfanatic Awesome. Looking forward to it. You earned a sub/like
This is a beautiful analysis.
I am attempting to write, for fun, something of a script for a sequel staring September 1 1939 and follows Cliff and Co. As America is eventually pulled into Second World War.
Watching the Rocketeer while constantly comparing it to Indiana Jones? Sounds terrible! My decision to pay as little attention as possible to the people making my movies, has been reinforced once again.
