We are big garlic users and having been planting it for years. I've frozen, put in oil, pickled, and dehydrated it making our own minced garlic and garlic powder. Thanks for the fertilizing tips.
Perfect timing and info Susan! 😂I was just thinking grass mats and could prevent garlic from shooting up-And then you said part it away so they can come through😂. I made the mistake of using some marsh hay last year because I didn’t have anything else and I planted garlic too early which had a lot of growth. The hay smothered the garlic. Good thing I did have some straw on most.😊 We finally had our first frost on 10/10 of 29*F and 30*F day before that and wilted some things. This is the longest date that I can remember as it’s usually frosted by 9/25-Z5a, WI. I will now wait another 2 weeks to plant the garlic-so about Halloween 👻. I’ve started clearing out plants and filling our new experimental Rootaloo (above ground root cellar), I hope it works. Tried buckwheat covercrop and may just plant the garlic in that bed and cover with the chop and drop. We are to get up to 3” of Rain thru to Saturday 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. It’s so dry here and the plants need it Big Time! Our sand we can still dig easy, but not at my SIL, their black dirt was solid rock and had a time to dig a piece of Scabiosa out, but I did get a lot of runners from her Ozark strawberries as mine were old and hers were so Big planted in boxes of Purple Cow. She’s in town and I’m not sure if they would survive in RB in country, but may try it as they were gorgeous plants. I’m all chatty as I was out early before rain to get things done and came in to find this timely video. There is still a lot to do. I have broccoli that is about to crown and hope we have enough time. Dahlias, cannas and glads to dig. I hope the begonias and geraniums overwinter. I cut the leaves off geraniums as I thought they would mold and put in a box. Was sorry to read that you are stopping news letter and column, but we understand about time constraints. Thankfully you will continue your videos and website.👏🏼👏🏼
So when do you add the bone meal? We are already planting the soft neck garlic in Texas. Glorious to wake up to 65 degrees with a high 81. Yippee. Have a great weekend.
Lol, and we are happy in WI to finally have highs in 50s. We hit over 100* several times and cousins in Tx thought 103*F was a cool day😂. I mix bonemeal in before planting, but you could work it in around rows.
I am from Ontario, Canada. I grow my own garlic and each year I add more to my patch because we don’t have enough to eat and plant for the next season. In our area, we have leek moth and this year they did a lot of damage to our crop even if using BTK. I find that the plants grow too high to protect them with insect netting. Do you have other solutions to suggest?
Oh my, the leek moths sound awful. To my knowledge, we don't have them here and I've never seen their damage on our allium-family crops. I did a bit of research on them for you and it appears that crop rotation and insect netting are your best bet. You might be able to find some netting that is wide (tall) enough for your plants at this website: www.gardenport.com/collections/insect-netting. I did find this information for you: www.mofga.org/resources/fact-sheets/leek-moth-2/. It indicates that products containing Spinosad (such as Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew) can be effective as well. If I think of something else or find more useful information, I'll sure let you know.
Thank you so very much for helping some of us re-learn & becoming proficient gardeners again!!!!! 💚💚💚💚💚
I'm glad you found it helpful!

I so need to try dehydrating garlic yet. Waiting till after our badly needed rain spell in WI so I can dehydrate outside.
Susan as a new gardener, I really appreciate the thoroughness of your videos and am a happy subscriber! Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much!
Fantastic video! Thank you!
Another great place to get garlic for planting is at your local farmers' market!

Hi, Donna. I added the bone meal to the bed while I was preparing the soil, prior to planting.
