  • In the next few days my grandmother will be turning 80. Before she does though I managed to get an interview with her about sexuality. She speaks about sex education as a child, dating as a college student, the decision to be a wife, birth control and then unexpected parenthood that gave her the opportunity to have sex talks with her own children. Hopefully this conversation encourages you to have conversations of your own with grandparents and elders. They’re important voices in learning about sex!

This is just one of my favorite videos of all time so far... and that's really saying something because I've watched almost all of yours. As someone around your age (32), there's just something raw and amazing about crossing generational boundaries on topics like these that were treated SO completely differently just 50, 60, 70+ years ago.

Aww she seems so sweet!!! It's really fantastic that you can have conversations like this with your grandmother. I think with my paternal grandma if I asked she'd answer my questions, but I think it would make her uncomfortable, and I wouldn't want to do that to her. Older generations have had such a hefty taboo placed on sex - especially about speaking openly about it.
I wrote a paper recently for my US history courses about the AIDS epidemic, and decided to interview a few people that I knew that had a big hand in LGBTQ+ history and their connections to the crisis. With this, especially with the few men I got to interview, came quite a bit of talk of sexuality and how their sex lives were impacted by the epidemic. It was very strange to have someone over 60 being so open about that at first, because I realized that I do absolutely have a stigma ingrained in me when it comes to the elderly and sex. It was hugely informative, and a really wonderful experience. I don't know if I have much of a point here, but this video reminded me a lot of the work I had done recently, and yeah!
    Wonderful video

As an adult, I realize that the dialogue concerning sexuality I had with my parents was outside of the norm here in the US. In my culture (Thai), sexuality - including homosexuality and alternative genders, is not seen as being shameful. Thus, parents were and are open to conversations about sexuality with their children. In fact, a lot of sexual humor and teasing is found in books, television shows and other media aimed at adolescents.

How star is the generational change in addressing the topic ! Even in her studies they didn't address the pleasure aspect, only development and changes.
My favorite aspect of this interview with your Grandma was seeing the personal you relating with her. Your reaction to her saying your mother "knew it all" was priceless. So human, so cute.
Whatching you as an educator is ofcause very informative and downright refreshing in how amazingly open and "matter of fact" you just lay the information out there as it is. Always entertaining in the way you present your material.

How has our societies views on sex changed, and what's good and bad about that?
What is your view on being able to talk about sex, birth control, and sexual health openly without vulgarity or judgment?
Are you worried about the future of how sex is seen and treated?
You've seen a lot change - what do you think sex education and beliefs will be like in another 30 years?

My grandma is only a few years older than yours, and my great-grandmother the same age, I think. I have never asked them about sex and sexuality. But I know my grandma wouldn't like at all to talk about it, for her it's a topic that must not be talked about at all. She was very happy my grandpa, but I think she never really learned that it was something you can do for pleasure, not only to make kids. While on the other hand, my great-grandmother sometimes will just say something hinting that she used to have lots of sex and really enjoy it. I always find it curious how different her experiences where, considering they grew up in the same area. And my parents.. they always tried to answer the best they could the few questions I asked as a child, but it was always so awkward for them that I just stopped asking.

My paternal nan absolutely hated sex apparently and only did it a couple of times to have my dad. And my maternal nan was very devout JW so she wouldn't have ever spoken about it if she were still alive through my teenage years, so it's nice to watch this video. That's not to say it's a conversation I'd have, but it's interesting to know about the changes in education and taboos

Thank you and thanks to your Grandma for giving us valuable information about life, love, and ourselves.

Two really common disorders that can cause cramps/pain are endometriosis and PCOS. Dr. Doe has a PCOS video with more info. Hormonal birth control can also make periods shorter and reduce pain. Hope you find something that helps!

For years I was the same way. Then I finally found a gyn who listened to me. Back in May I had a laparoscopy to see if I had endometriosis and correct it. Now I take a birth control that only gives me a period once every three months and my cramps are much more controlled.

My mum says that after you have a child you don't get bad cramps because your uterus stretches out. Which fits in with what Marisol said. I still have those cramps (no children yet), but I take painkillers every month and it really helps.

+Scattered Moon Shards I had a child and have had no change in my cramps. When I stopped using tampons they got a little better. When I started using this birth control they got even better. Almost no period but moderate cramps. Heat pads help on the occasion that I do get them.

Informative, positive, entertaining,.. and you being "easy on the eyes" helps a lot.. learning more than I figured I would, my being a 50 year old man and had 34+ separate lovers over the years.. good to know quality, positive information on sex is available to the young men and women just starting their sexual experiences.. keep up the great work.. I hope to be seeing more of your videos soon..

My grandmother was a Jewish woman in Britain during the Second World War. My grandfather was a Jewish GI. He asked her out on the base, she said no and then tripped him before saying yes (he had to walk past her desk to get to the CO's office). When he asked her to marry him she had to cancel other dates. She was OG and boom I'm here today. You rock grandma! You making you're own choices enabled me to live the life I've had! I love you.

My mamaw had a very different experience growing up in very rural southern Indiana in the 30s and 40s. She did not go to college, I don't think she even went to high school. She got married at 15 to a man who I was (I think about) 30. She married mainly out of financially necessity, her mother was a single mom with 7 kids in the depression. If she were still alive, I think she would be about the same age as your grandma, I think less than 10 years older. Very interesting seeing how different their experiences were, even in the same era! To my mamaw (great-grandmother), the most important thing she learned and wanted to teach my grandma, mom, and I was to never have to depend on a man for anything. She died when I was 8. I wish she was still around now that I'm an adult, I would learn so much from her.

please keep up the good work and please stick the thought of a documentary or doc series about real life history of sex with propper interviews and real people like your grandma. I think it really hasuts place.
