Baby steps! Nobody here (at least not me) will ever judge the choice you make at the end of the data. Listen to the data, process the data, and then make an informed choice. That’s all a reasonable person would ask.
I’m weaning off Coke Zero by mixing it half and half with unsweetened flavored sparkling waters like La Croix. I’ll keep cutting the Coke more and more until I’m just drinking the water. Got this idea from Dr. Ken Berry and his wife Neisha. They made a video about it. 😊

I supplement allulose. I use it not as a sweetener but as a additive to my supplemental drink to make it healthier (with ACV, beef liver powder, non-fortified nutritional yeast flakes, and camu camu powder).
Allulose probably works a lot like lactose does for people who are lactose intolerant since your body can't process it. I've heard it gives people horrible gas.
Not really… lactose intolerance results from lactase non-persistence. There isn’t an enzyme to breakdown Allulose in humans. At higher doses some people experience GI distress but this usually isn’t until above 0.4g/kg
I had explosive gas for a couple of days but spent a lot on the allulose so kept at it thinking my body would adjust. It did. Now I can eat it without blowing the windows out.
Please make a video on metabolic effects of LACTATE - Why is it beneficial? - What are the effects when consumed through fermented foods, kefir as an example? - Should you consume it in moderation? - Does it spike insulin? - lactate produced in body vs consumed? Etc

Your videos getting really good I can follow and digest the info easily... also WOW that is an incredible science advisory board! At a time when all companies are using science to go the other direction, some top health products I used are now NO LONGER recommended due to selling out to a big $$$$ buyer and then the product grade drops dramatically to the point that the original product is essentially gone and only the brand name remains. BRAGGS is one example!
Another major issue with aspartame is that it breakdown into 10 percent methanol roughly which is incredibly problematic for the the entire body especially the retinal nerves. Sucralose breaksdown into small amounts of carbon monoxide making them both metabolic poisons. I do not see a major problem with small amounts of allulose, but I will not be consuming it considering how associated it is with gastrointestinal issues that it took me months of carnivore to cure.
Nick - for some reason, a segment of people find allulose to have a very bitter taste. I am one of them. I have tried it repeatedly in my coffee, but end up throwing it out, even after trying to mask it with stevia or some other sweetener. I am 67 and insulin resistant due to eating the SAD all my life. I am now carnivore/keto. It would be so wonderful if you could find out why it is so bitter to some people, and is there a way it could be modified to not be bitter. FYI, I have a sweet tooth and sucralose is my favorite tasting low calorie sweetener. For some reason, I am able to tolerate allulose in ice cream recipes. Perhaps it is the fat in the cream that is masking the bitter taste. I do not put cream in my coffee because I need to restrict calories.
That's so interesting. I've heard a few (rare) people say this. I believe it/you.. just don't know what's causing it. It feels to me as if someone said bananas are spicy... just so out of the realm of my own experience... curious and cool ;)
You may be a super taster. A small proportion of people naturally have more taste buds than normal. It means you do taste things differently. I too can tolerate Allulose in home made ice cream but I've tried making a chocolate sauce with it and been very disappointed.

Yet another WOW video. I’m really interested in allulose and how it might help get blood glucose and insulin in healthier ranges. AND trans-generational concerns should be a major concern to humans. I used to have a major Diet Coke habit, but realized it gave me worse cravings for sweets. Maybe someone will come up with an allulose diet cola-bet there’s money in that.
Splenda has problems since a main ingredient is sucralose. In human RCTs, has been shown to contribute to insulin resistance. See prior video ua-cam.com/video/fyERqDgSiMg/v-deo.html

@nicknorwitzPhD - Not sure of the brand. My wife orders it online and puts it in a big container for me. Favorite recipe is pavlova! Although my wife isn't so keen because it doesn't crisp up when using allulose, as it does with sugar.😵
Richard Johnson claims fructose makes us fat, but I’ve never seen an overweight fruitarian-they’re usually very slim with no belly. It’s also crucial for scientists/studies to distinguish between fructose from whole, unprocessed foods and high fructose corn syrup.
There is cause/contribute and sufficient. One can be the former without being the latter. That said, I’ve never met a long-time human fruititarian in great health either so…
@@nicknorwitzPhD You make a good point: fruit alone cannot make you fat, and eating only fruit isn’t healthy. My next question is: what foods, when combined with fruit, might lead to weight gain? Additionally, how can someone determine whether it’s the combination of food and fruit causing weight gain, rather than the effect of one alone?
Moreover, despite a decline in sugar consumption over recent decades, obesity rates have continued to rise. Since sugar is 50% fructose, I find it hard to believe that fructose from whole, unprocessed foods can drive metabolic disease or obesity, as noted by Richard Johnson.
I always want to believe such research and I love that you put this content out there but I also really like to see you talk about who the researchers are and if they might be biased. Maybe the research is funded by certain companies that sell allulose. I would be great if you could also talk a little bit about this.
There are a lot of papers, many from independent groups without COI. I recommend also checking out my prior Allulose video if you want more details ua-cam.com/video/pr93EsEV2bM/v-deo.html
When making ice cream with allulose, the texture comes out the same as regular sugar. I also add monkfruit extract to make up for the lack of sweetness of allulose.
I make a corn syrup using 1 1/2 cups allulose with 1 cup of water, dissolved over medium heat and then add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar to keep the sugar from crystallizing and simmering for 20 minutes and I put it in a class jar. I use a quarter cup to sweeten my ice cream I make in my Ninja Creami, makes a great ice cream!!😋😋
I'm sensitive to allulose. In other words, if I'm going to use it for weight loss, that would unfortunately happen for me by excessive elimination of everything in my digestive system. So it's much better for me just to avoid simple carbs altogether.
Thank you I do use a heaping scoop still not sweet. I can stand it but not particularly sweet. At this point I’m using it for the support of the GLP-1 hormone as I’m diabetic & likely insulin resistant. Thanks for everyone’s input.
Interesting to hear the different opinions on its sweetness. I wonder if there is a gene/set of genes for Allulose sensitivity or what modulates the variance?
That RxSugar brownie mix is the sweetest thing I’ve ever tasted. I’ve got to figure out what to mix in to make it tolerable. Also, can you tell them to make a Mrs. Butterworth’s flavored pancake syrup? 😃
I put a little allulose in my steal cut oats each morning. My CGM shows a reasonable bump vs the spike that would result w/o allulose. Also, I walk 5 miles right after eating the oats to substantially shorten the duration of elevated BG.
Thanks - I knew sucralose & aspartame were a problem but it’s just super crazy bad. I do like Allulose but I wish it would set up better in some recipes & very pleased from its great report card!
Agreed that interventions are bad news unless they combat the mess that novelty throws us into already (e.g. supplementing with vitamin D to offset indoor work/life)
@@nicknorwitzPhD I always enjoy your content. Too bad ultra processed food manufacturers don’t sub sugar for allulose. Also, on a unrelated topic, it would be awesome if you considered doing a videp about your take on a 3 day sardine fast, peos and cons. It seems to be the latest rage in the low carb and carnivore community
That's a less common one. Can't say I know a ton about neotame... less literature. But there are data on neotame negatively impacting the gut epithelium and microbiome. Also, it's an amine of 3,3-dimethylbutanal and aspartame... so I'd guess it has some similar effects of aspartame. That's about what I know
My only intake of sweeteners is the occasional protein bar and protein powder. Unfortunately in Australia all the good tasting whey and casein use sucralose. I would happily pay more if they used allulose. A good education program around CGM is also required. The issue I find is people are so focus on spikes (even those that are small and considered normal for those without type 2 diabetes) and ignore A1C. The total time spent above baseline is more important than anything else.
Haha, well I'm honest in my claim I don't get a % of profits from these brownie sales. The NICK20 discount code is just for you :) rxsugar.com/products/rxsugar-keto-brownie-mix
That’s a reasonable comment. For sure if it doesn’t agree with you then don’t have it… To be honest I’m more than that outlier category… Although I try to disentangle what I use from what I’m interested in and could be useful for others.
Would the sensation of blood glucose dropping send you into a sensation of „hunger“ / into a binge, or is allulose‘s simultaneous effect on Glp1 counteracting, buffering so to speak?
That’s a good question! The energy deficit in the blood proposed by the carbohydrate insulin model, and as demonstrated in randomized control trials, is driven by insulin forcing energy into fat tissue. That wouldn’t apply here as insulin is actually reduced with allulose intake. The mechanism is distinct with respect to fuel partitioning, and the effects on blood glucose is going to be seen much earlier in the post prandial period with allulose, whereas the dip in blood sugar would be secondary to rise an insulin in the late postprandial period (after a spike) with sugar or carbs.
Yeah Nick, but what about the FARTING! Lol, I got some allulose and started using it slightly in a few meals, and GoshDarn it, I became the fricking Hindenberg. I farted more that I can remember!!
Blood clot tendency was noticed in people taking erythritol, when and if available, I'd like your input there as well as how erythritol compares/contrasts with allulose. Both are largely excreted in the urine. I suspect dehydration maybe be a larger player with these sugars thereby promoting potential blood clots.
I've been using allulose in my morning coffee for awhile now, and I find that it reduces my hunger for several hours. I have a question, though. If allulose reduces blood glucose even if it's already elevated and reduces insulin, where does that glucose go? Without the insulin to store it, is it just getting filtered by the kidneys? Does the liver store it in liver fat? It can't just disappear, right?
Good question... there are some data on inhibition of intestinal enzymes like sucrase and on competition at the SGLT and GLUT transporters in the intestines. But with respect to serum glucose if you have it on a fast, possible effects on muscle glucose uptake independent of insulin, post-prandial fat energy expenditure (with temporary shift away from carb metabolism) and attenuation of hepatic gluconeogenesis. Again, good question. Pretty remarkable effects in T1Ds too.
So I'm wondering, if the stuff would just be neutral, I'd agree with the "if you need something sweet" part. But if it's actively beneficial, could it not be used as a supplement to control bloodsuger, if only maybe at the beginning of a weight loss journey? Would that make sense? Would there be benefits of diet + the stuff vs. diet without?
What are your thoughts on allulose-protein adduct formation in the bloodstream? The glucose monitor is only measuring glucose, but allulose can react, too, before it is eliminated by the kidneys.
For an average person it was seen that around a 20g serving had a positive effect that had zero side-effects such as gut discomfort. I seem to remember it was at 30g that most people did experience some gut discomfort.
OK. I have the SugarRX brownie mix. My hack is to add 2 Tbsp cream in place of the water to add richness. But I'm looking at the photo and video of the brownie you show in the intro and drooling. It looks like a caramel filling of some kind in this brownie? Please share the recipe. Pleeeeaaaase.🙏
TBH... I dropped a giant block of cream cheese in :) ... Shh... you can mix the mix with cream, whole milk, cream cheese... I've added House of Macadamia Mac Butter on top... they have a chocolate one that's better than Nutella... but I thought it would be "much" to add a third partner and product promotion to one video... lol... even if the plug was honest and fit.
There are no studies that identified allulose as a possible carcinogen. It is not allowed to be used as an ingredient in commercial goods in the EU because it is a novel food and is deemed to require more research as to its longer term effects. You can still purchase allulose online and have it delivered to your EU address. I'm unsure if you can purchase it in stores.
It's not a carcinogen. That's just a bad rumor. I actually did quite a deep dive into approvals, including things like the German Federal Institutes Risk (BfR) assessment. I was shocked by how weak their commentaries were. I suspect it will be approved in due time. If not, it's not a scientific but a political matter.
20 grams of carbs ... but it keeps blood sugar low ??? (I mean, NO one eats just one brownie). I would LOVE to see a blood glucose response after eating these !
Capitalism is awesome! ... despite is flaws (boom bust cycles, inequality, stress). I like that you're up-front about profit seeking (you're doing some, right?), and the virtue of tying it to health. Kudos!
OK - I will try allulose! You make a very convincing argument. I like monkfruit laced with erythritol myself. You didn't mention any side effects for those?...
I don't see monk fruit as problematic, not based on what I've read. If you do try the Allulose NICK20 will get you 20% off anything (I don't get any % sales, just friends and family discount)
The thing is, allulose takes a LOT to sweeten. But hey to be honest even though I am trying to get as close a possible to Carnivore, I still like sweet tasting stuff. Weirdly but thankfully diet sodas don’t taste as desirable these days.
If only our government in the UK would allow allulose, unfortunately under Novel Food regulation its not allowed. Enjoy your brownies and spare us a thought.
15g Allulose and 5 grams of fiber. Net carbs Zero. Who told you to look at Toal carbs? By that logic, an avocado has 13g of carbs not 3... but how will each impact you blood sugar.
I didn't formulate it... but when I've made it I do add fat: macadamia nut butter, cream cheese etc... why do like think there is a white streak in my brownie in the hook?
Never just anyone who says “ it’s not about the money” and then “ trust me”. Better to say it’s money plus it’s an exciting concept and I get to work with cool people.
Sucralose and aspartame makes me deathly sick. Severe headaches, severe nausea, general horrible feeling in every inch of my body. I can taste it in tiny amounts instantly so I know it's in something even if I haven't seen the ingredient list. Allulose has no effect on my blood sugar or horrible effects on my body systems.
I’m very hesitant to try allulose, besides the price, because we don’t know much about how it works.. just like aspartame and stevia were supposed to be the next best things and now all the drawbacks are out. Guess I’ll wait until the drawbacks are revealed.
You are one of the few that I honestly believe puts science above $$$.

I eat Splenda sparingly, stevia & erythritol frequently. I’m going to switch to pure allulose. I’m going to try it first and make sure i tolerate, then I’m definitely going to buy the brownie mix!

Homemade Crème Brûlée using allulose.
Perfect, since allulose caramelizes like sucrose.

How mysterious
@@nicknorwitzPhD It's not mystery, but rather a debate on the best sweetener healthy option 😅
I’m using a CGM , and I enjoy getting the data, and making discoveries that I would have otherwise missed about my metabolic health. I confess, I’m a sweet addict. A good tasting brownie that won’t spike my glucose sounds wonderful.

… I was actually drinking a Diet Coke while watching this…. though I’m using it to wean off Red Bull ( which I am now 100% off ) and weaning off the Diet Cole with Green Tea.. progress…
Progress. Taking steps. Move forward!

I have been carnivore since February and added some Allulose yesterday as an experiment . It did not make glucose rise or fall. But this morning my ketone breatherlizer registered zero. Normally I’m 20+
Ah good n=1 study. So it does raise insulin

Wow, thank you! 😂
I’ve read that allulose enlarges the liver and the kidneys. Is this something to be concerned about?
I supplement allulose. I use it not as a sweetener but as a additive to my supplemental drink to make it healthier (with ACV, beef liver powder, non-fortified nutritional yeast flakes, and camu camu powder).
What does that taste like?
How does it work for you?
Allulose probably works a lot like lactose does for people who are lactose intolerant since your body can't process it. I've heard it gives people horrible gas.
Not really… lactose intolerance results from lactase non-persistence. There isn’t an enzyme to breakdown Allulose in humans. At higher doses some people experience GI distress but this usually isn’t until above 0.4g/kg
YEP MORE THAN 3 HEAPING TEASPOONS...DIARRHEA 😅
I had explosive gas for a couple of days but spent a lot on the allulose so kept at it thinking my body would adjust. It did. Now I can eat it without blowing the windows out.
Please make a video on metabolic effects of LACTATE
- Why is it beneficial?
- What are the effects when consumed through fermented foods, kefir as an example?
- Should you consume it in moderation?
- Does it spike insulin?
- lactate produced in body vs consumed? Etc

Your videos getting really good I can follow and digest the info easily... also WOW that is an incredible science advisory board!
At a time when all companies are using science to go the other direction, some top health products I used are now NO LONGER recommended due to selling out to a big $$$$ buyer and then the product grade drops dramatically to the point that the original product is essentially gone and only the brand name remains. BRAGGS is one example!
I appreciate it. I will always be directed by the scientific process. And yes it’s a great team!
As I said... if you don't need it or don't want it... don't have it. Easy peasy
That's amazing! First time I've heard about such stuff.
👀👀👀

Thanks for the kind comment. And that’s a good idea… 👍
That's great, but Allulose is NOT affordable for most people.
My wife uses Splenda and her A1C has ben creeping higher. I'm going to get her some Allulose and see if she likes it. Thanks

What brand? What flavor? What’s your favorite allulose recipe?
I should try this. I was finally able to import some allulose into Canada, and I would do pretty much anything to lower my glucose as much as possible. (to fight brain cancer)
Also in Canada. What site did you have success ordering from?@@H4KnSL4K
Am I not right in thinking fruit was seasonal before the 1900s. So where did the tribe of Fruiterans come from?
There is cause/contribute and sufficient. One can be the former without being the latter. That said, I’ve never met a long-time human fruititarian in great health either so…
@@karenohanlon4183 haha, its just people who believe in only eating fruit
Does Allulose feed cancer cells? I had a breast cancer scare and have eliminated sugar from my diet. I would like to use Allulose if it is safe.
No it does not. I’ve never heard of any cancer being able to metabolize allulose. I’d be shocked if

I won't protest ;)
When making ice cream with allulose, the texture comes out the same as regular sugar. I also add monkfruit extract to make up for the lack of sweetness of allulose.
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor or recipe?
Whatever works best for you!
lol you know they have that already 😉
Custard? Cream?
All natural peanut butter.
I'm already using this thanks to you and I really like it!
Great to hear!
I'm curious... Does the sweet taste of allulose convey some of the beneficial effects or would you get the same results if taken in capsule form?
I don’t think the taste per se provides benefit… theoretically a capsule would confer the same benefits
@@nicknorwitzPhD Interesting! Thanks for answering!
That will put a smile on my wife's face .. she has a brownie weakness LOL!!
I put a little allulose in my steal cut oats each morning. My CGM shows a reasonable bump vs the spike that would result w/o allulose. Also, I walk 5 miles right after eating the oats to substantially shorten the duration of elevated BG.
Very cool, hiker Mike. I'd take a bump over a spike anyday.
Nick...keep me in mind for either the Key Lime Pie or Graham Cracker studies. 😊

Dont suppose you know if Neotame will exhibit similar anxiety behaviors since its a form of Aspartame
I know people who use a whey isolate and allulose? DIY?

@@nicknorwitzPhDthanks, Prof! Clear. I’m in awe 😊 need to study more

That’s a matter for between you and your microbiome. Leave my 👃 out of this 😉
Blood clot tendency was noticed in people taking erythritol, when and if available, I'd like your input there as well as how erythritol compares/contrasts with allulose. Both are largely excreted in the urine. I suspect dehydration maybe be a larger player with these sugars thereby promoting potential blood clots.
RX SUGARS maple syrup is delicious. I put it on everything

Yes, that's logical. I know people who use it for the exact purpose, including people who are keto with T1D.
What are your thoughts on allulose-protein adduct formation in the bloodstream? The glucose monitor is only measuring glucose, but allulose can react, too, before it is eliminated by the kidneys.

What dose of allulose is postulated to show these anti-hunger and blood sugar lowering effects, respectively (g/kg of body weight)?
For an average person it was seen that around a 20g serving had a positive effect that had zero side-effects such as gut discomfort. I seem to remember it was at 30g that most people did experience some gut discomfort.
If I had you give you a value I’d say 0.3g/kg/d split into 2-3 premeal blouses

Isn’t this banned here in EU as it is a carciogen?
Thanks, i have tried allulose and it works like a charm ❤

Funny, here mixed on that... for me, it's hyper sweet. It's supposedly ~70% the sweetness of regular sugar, FWIW... which still sounds very sweet.
