I have a 1985 W123 200, lacks the power of the 280 but same high speed stability. The chassis is fantastic and there's no problem to cruise at top speed (175km/h on the speedo) with only one finger on the steering wheel.
Done nearly that with my 1983 280TE: 205km/h. I find it even more impressive with what looks like an old family car from the 1970's, people totally don't suspect what it is still capable of. One of the first sleepers.
I finally noticed the air vents inside haven't changed much.. this is such a beautiful vehicle. No wild bells and whistles but yet still advanced for the time. I wish MB would reproduce vehicles from the 80s and 90s today at the same quality standards from then.
These cars were conceived and built by the vision of MB engineers, today's MB is the product of accountants and stockholders' concept of what the public wants, they've hijacked the name to produce German versions of Toyotas and Chevrolet's. Only the name remains of one of the greatest, if not THE greatest car maker of all time
I dont think the can anymore... it's all the electronics that messes the cars they produce now, and they seem to what their car owners to pay more for servicing the cars now.
Back in the day when these cars were new, especially at the beginning of its production you had to bring a serious sports car if you wanted to beat this. Only a hand full of cars was actually quicker and you would not have the comfort of this car. The 280E, 280CE or 280TE besides the S-Class would make you king of the road.
how about more than 50 years old: a 1969 300 SEL 6.3 could reach 220 km/h. But even with (a lot) less displacement and almost 50 years old: 1972 BMW 3.0Si did 211 km/h.
My first time driving in Germany was in 1984 with a white Mercedes 230E sedan with roll down windows, manual sunroof and sturdy blue cloth interior. Seeing this video brings is like going down memory lane. After using one on the autobahn, I came away thinking a Mercedes 123 is a no-nonsense solid car. Sometimes, I am tempted with the idea of getting a M-B 123 coupe as a pleasure car to use on a nice day on weekends once in a while with collectors car insurance..
Yes 30 years ago now its just star slapped on a bunch of disgusting overweight hatchbacks cuvsuvcrosdovers that lag in styling build quality and tech. Genesis and Lexus will end MB in the long run if this company will let accountants to make all the decisions
My father bought a 1976 208 CE in 1981 and it was the car of my little boy dreams. I could have it for several years and this engine and gearbox 3 was awesome. What a pleasure to see again a video of this car.
What sort of witchery did Germans do with the Merc. 200kmph and the thing is gliding like a marble ball on ice. Smooth and no vibration. Specially when you are driving with a thumb at those speeds. My elantra 2012 looks like it'll take off at 160. Great quality video, keep em coming.

I love the old 2.8e straight six. So comfotable and powerful engine. Takes this big Benz up to 200+ so effortless and quiet. Cruise at 180 on long autobahn tours in this nice two doors coupe, and you can relax and enjoy the quality of this 1984 posh ride for hours while the kilometers disappear in the back mirror.

It had OK power and it revs OK but in the 80s its started to feel a bit dated. The successor M103 is a so much more refined engine, quiter and smoother power delivery.
Joakim Quensel agree. One can’t deny it is a characterful motor and pretty bulletproof. It’s still one of my favourites after owning an M110, M103, M104 and now M112
@@TheM275 My only experience of this engine is from a 1973 280SE that I owned in the early 90s and I think the W116 was a bit too heavy to make the M110 character really justice. A lot of noise but little action,. And as a poor student I didn't like the gas milage. My next var was a W126 300SE and the M103 felt silk smoith in comparasion although still a bit underpowered. Later also had a R107 300SL with the M103, Power OK for the cars weight but an auto gearbox that shifts like it's on valium did not add to the fun. From there on I have no exoerience of the newer Mercedes 6 cyl gasoline engines, only V8s and 6 cyl diesels.
We got to borrow a 1977 280CE a few years ago. In 1977 the output was 177hp. It had only run 96.000km and was very solid. It was an incredibly fun car that ran very strong. We never went fast with it, but it was still very apparent that the 280 is a very capable engine. We own a sedan from 1979, but it only has a 230 M115 engine with 109hp. It doesn't pull like the 280 but it is surprisingly strong despite it's low output. It should be able to reach at least 170km/h. The W123 is really an incredible car.

@@atarvhegde5210 I just watched a 280CE with 84,000 miles sell for a hair over $27,000 US. Another, with 120,xxx miles, a 1977 280CE, just sold for $24,000. You can pick up a decent one for 10-15k. I’m talking about damn near perfect condition cars.
@@mherziarescatie Well I have seen some 280ce which sold for 5-10k in bringatrailer.Usually euro spec models sell higher in US.6-8 grand is a little less, but you can get them for 9-12k.

this car reminds me of my youth, a very wealthy neighbor of mine had one, among the many he owned, and when I heard it running I immediately fell in love with its sound, it is different and very harmonious, even today it would be one of the cars which I would buy if only I had the possibility and the certainty of restoring it properly, unfortunately they have very delicate bodywork, having subframe and panels, and often what seems beautiful from the outside is often in rather bad shape... in fact they can be found at still affordable but if you have to get involved, especially in the frame where many parts are unobtainable, the costs become prohibitive 😞
I don't usually do this, but: Try doing that in an American Coupe from the 70s. This is so nice to see. An old well kept Mercedes revving its nuts off on the autobahn. Just how it was intended.😍
Makes me smile..have had a 280 TE in the family since the 80s,it was my dad's and then mine and then my brother's then mine again...restoring as I type. .everything's the same as this,the sound the dashboard and Becker stereo everything except the rear half of the body and ours is black MB-Tex...I smile everytime I watch this vid..that sound and the way it gets up to 200 plus and when you back off the gas at high speed is identical..it will have no trouble keeping up with modern traffic ..
Had exact same car, poor torque at low RPM’s but once you got the engine revving it would pull hard and make that gorgeous 6 cylinder screaming sound, loved it. What a beauty, what an engine. Never drove it with only two thumbs ‘cause that is terrible drivers technique. Great video!

I used to have a 1975 W114 with the same engine and it was exactly like this, including that engine sound! I miss that car a lot.

i used to own a 280SL. Same engine. A great engine and a lot more sporty than people would think.
Your car had a single cam. The engine in this car has a twin cam.

thats the fuel economy of the car indicating how much fuel the car is using, its broken tho thats why its not moving. Gas tank indicator is middle top

I had a 280E when I was much younger. It was a fantastic car. Being in the US, I never got it anywhere near this fast. Probably 90 mph at most.

That’s a solid 6500 r/min in top gear. It might have its origins in the 1960’s, but an M110 on full throttle sounds great 👍
