Video has been blocked in some countries. No idea how this movie is ACTIVELY doing everything in their power to make sure no one sees it. Puts it on Apple TV and now they block the video. No wonder no one talks about it.
Yeah, which is unfortunate because Cartoon Saloon makes great animation and should have more attention and support! Don't know why they went with Apple TV to stream it behind a paywall, though I guess it's because other streaming services didn't know what to do with it I guess?
Robyn's father was a metaphorical "chained wolf" in the story, a beaten and broken dog doing the bidding of the master to escape his wrath. But beaten animals bite back. I love the intensity of that final fight. It's just so good in every way.
I love the way the artists make the township and the forest so visually distinct. The use forced perspective on the town to make it look crowded and claustrophobic, while the forest is made of flowing organic lines with the colors bleeding together.
Fun fact, “Lord Protector” is supposed to be Oliver Cromwell. There is a deleted scene where he survives the fall but is still bitten. Which means he has potential to be a wolf Walker too.
Yeah, the dude was horrible and practically genocided the Irish people. In one case, he bashed in a surrendering Irishman with his own peg leg. Cartoon Saloon does such an awesome job representing Irish history.
Are you telling me, that this man was originally supposed to survive a very high fall with sharp rocks pointing up? Yeah I call BS on that too. The fact it was even an idea.😵💫
I think they also express how Irish people under English rule, was also very demanding. They needed to fit in, they had to conform, and, being Irish myself (from Galway) I wish they talked about it more, but I just like seeing it shown. Thank you pig for talking about our folklore and explaining things the movie doesn’t completely explain
The medieval history of werewolves and christianity is insane, everything from proper werewolf hunts and trials to painting Saint Christopher with the head of a dog.
It really is! In OSP's (Overly Sarcastic Production's) channel, they had a mythology video about the history of werewolves, and it's kinda mysterious how werewolves used to be praised by Christians for a little while before they started vilifying them instead, for some reason... 0_0
Understandable to be missed by someone not originally from Ireland (or the UK) but it has an interesting perspective on the English rule of Ireland (specifically when you mention the issues of religion, sectarian conflict has plagued Ireland for centuries). The 'Lord Protector' would be a common title for an English 'landlord', usually who cared little for the prosperity of his Catholic tenants (serfs), note also the English 'new model army' making multiple appearances. During the period of the film there was a gaelic revival that many English higher ups feared; and I think the film has an amazing portrayal of this fascination and wonder that the disgruntled and trodden down felt and identified with.
I'm not Irish(or English), but that was one of the most noticeable aspects that stood out to me, much more so than the 'importance of nature' message he took from it. It's interesting to see the different things people will take away from the same movie/music/picture etc..
I am a furry but yeah I liked this cause duhhh wolves. But, this movies is very intriguing. Many lessons and themes in it. Historical references to UKs colonization of Ireland, obeying out of fear vs being free, nature being brighter etc.. I also adore the art style.
2 quick factoids: 1 - Lord Protector is an actual title that was given to regional lords (even to rulers under Cromwell) and I think it's a really interesting look at how they saw themselves 2 - Possibly just coincidence, but the way the wolves perceive things is almost exactly how the perception of a werewolf character is described by Terry Pratchett in the Discworld series. Just think it's super neat to see one of my favourite studios draw inspiration from one of my favourite authors
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Terry Pratchett did draw some inspiration from Gaelic/Celtic folklore in a lot of his books. I remember he often drew references to various fae within his Tiffany Aching series (as well as how powerful naming magic is and magic to possess someone in the Hogfather).
@@Scarshadow666 Oh for sure, but if that is what happened then it kind of leaves a cool circular dynamic to the whole thing - Pratchett is inspired by old celtic mythology and goes on to inspire new Irish literature about that mythology. It's all assumptions on my part but it's a nice thought
You also should cover Cartoon Saloon’s other film, The Breadwinner. It’s about a young girl trying to live her life in Taliban ruled Afghanistan, and her quest to save her father after he’s arrested.
Pig, thanks so much for that bit you said about paganism! As a pagan myself, I’m used to people not understanding or trying to understand my spiritual beliefs, and it honestly took me aback when you went out of your way to speak positively about my religion. Thanks so much again! And great video as always !
I watched Wolfwalkers very soon after it released and honestly? It's a gorgeous film that introduced me to more Celtic folklore. I adored every moment of it. The ending was absolutely gorgeous. I recommend it to absolutely every person that enjoys film
I think the use of shapes is something that is often looked over in animation but Wolfwalkers does an amazing job portraying characters and location through shape. Robyn, her father and the other townspeople are made up of very straight and rigid lines and squares. It matches the claustrophobic box that the town is drawn as. It also represents how constrictive the town and the rules are. While Mebh and her mother and the forest are made of rough, loose, round lines and circles that represent the freedom of the forest. Another design choice that I would like to point out is that as the movie progresses, Robyn’s hair falls looser and looser out of her bonnet, before it is completely discarded. Once again representing her gaining her freedom through being a wolfwalker. I really enjoyed this video (and the one you made on the Secret of Kells!) and I look forward to your Song of the Sea video (that’s the first movie out of the trilogy that I’ve seen so it holds a special place in my heart)
I think that for one of Cartoon Saloon's next films, they should do a GOOD animated film about Titanic. Not only was she built in Ireland, she also had many Irish immigrants aboard during her maiden voyage, including fourteen travelers who all came from the same village in Ireland. Since the studio already has a resumé in Irish culture, it would be a nice, animated period piece.
I've been waiting for this. The main reason this movie is so unknown is because when it was released it was only released onto Apple+ streaming which is far from the biggest platform. Even now It seems to only be available physically as part of that 3 film set. I've been championing this film since I saw it years ago. Another thing. This movie was actually up for an Oscar for best animated feature but ended up losing to Soul because Pixar of course. Also, as a furry, I've noticed that even in the furry community this film just seems unknown. It feels almost criminal how overlooked this masterpiece is.
About the townspeople singing about wolves: I noticed the street band (Kila, really. I love them) sings about the wolf hearing the hunt and escaping, but the kids are chanting about the wolf dying
Just one minor correction, the Lord Protector's name is Oliver Cromwell, based on the _actual_ Oliver Cromwell who was an English statesman, politician, and soldier, widely loved and respected by the English, but not so much by the Scottish and Irish. In 1649, he led The Cromwellian Conquest of Ireland, which was brutal in ways I can't even begin to describe, and 1650, he led a pre-emptive invasion of Scotland to strike at Scottish support for King Charles II. As you can probably imagine, he's quite reviled by both the Scottish and the Irish.
This one is so frickin good and I think the only reason why it wasn't talked about as much was because it came out on Apple TV and let's be honest how many people have that....this movie is gorgeous and the mythology is amazing
I live in Ireland and and am so happy to see Irish animation get the attention it truly deserves. I have met some of the people that worked on this movie durning a short work experience/work shop in their studios in Kilkenny. It was was a truly great experience and I am so lucky to have met such interesting people. Your coverage on this movie was great!
This video gave me chills in the beginning when you talked about the secret of kels and the other one. I grew up with those movies since I’m a second generation Irish immigrant. I value my culture and I’m very proud of my strong, creative peopleb
I watched this movie with my bf and we both loved it a lot, it was refreshing to see a 2D animated movie again, one that looks so drawn and sketchy. It’s just so beautiful 🩷
as an Irish person who grew up with Cartoon Saloon’s earlier films (Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea etc), I’m so glad people are covering this beautiful studio and this beautiful film. Wolfwalkers has been my family’s “Christmas movie” since it first came out!
I just want to say how incredibly grateful i am for you saying such nice things about us pagans and explaining to people what we actually stand for. I really appreciate it :)
Oh my god yessss I adore wolfwalkers, the animation vibrates safety and wonder and its historical base really grounds the story down. It’s the only movie I consciously rewatch, and am extremely disappointed it’s not more popular. It deserves so much more attention than it ever got.
Finally you cover this thing, it needs so much more attention. Its one of those movies that make you feel empty for a month after you watch it, leaving you wanting more.
Great video, amazing movie! As a celtic pagan (and proud irish citizen glad to see our amazing mythology being brought out there) i adore it - but i cannot get over the "beautiful irish town of Kilkenny." Kilkenny is a county, but i can see how the mistake could be made! Just wanted it out there because it bothered me :,)
Wolfwalkers is my favorite film of all time. The music, the art style, the animation, the story… all of it is amazing. The scene that you were talking about in the beginning, which I have dubbed "the Aurora sequence", is hands down the best scene in the whole film. Fun fact about that scene - Aurora originally released a much different version of "Running With The Wolves" on her album All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend, but she rerecorded the song specifically for this film. I believe it was Tomm Moore who said he was trying to find a song that might better fit the scene but couldn't because "Running With The Wolves" was too perfect of a fit. So he reached out asking if she would be willing to rerecord the song for the film, and she obviously agreed. It's been a while since I've seen that video and I can't find it, so I might have the story a little mixed up, but that's generally how it went.
Hot take: Wolfwalkers should have won the 2020 Academy Award in Animation over Soul. And Pixar having 2 nominations for a double chance at winning for that year shouldn't have been allowed.
Oh yeah fun fact: Cartoon Saloon is actually based in Kilkenny and when making the Secret of Kells they were renting a room in Young Filmmakers Ireland studio! It's not a much known fact but I was doing film camp and I just wanted to share it :D
I am a true Celtic, one of the "Pagan snakes" run out of my home. I was born in Kilkenny. True Celtic royal blood runs in my veins. My husband is royal Scottish. His family killed all the wolves in Scottland. So he took the name of Wolf. I named our son Wolf in honor of my husband standing against his family. I gave our son the middle name of our own Wolf god, Goldrinn. Both my husband and son have wolf spirits. Not as a spirit animal, but they are wolves stuck in a human body. I am named Mama Wolf because I live to take care of them, protect them. ❤
“Lord Protector” is actually supposedly Oliver Cromwell. Aka, as another youtuber has said, “Ollie McWarcrimes”. One of the most infamous colonizers in the period of time inhabiting the Irish lands.
If you're looking for another similar movie, style wise at least, I recommend Long Way North! It's not mythology based like wolfwalkers, but it has an interesting story going for it I think! Also if I'm remembering right, it was worked on by people from Secret of Kells!
I love this movie and the running with the wolves scene is especially great when you realize this version of the song is just for the movie with added things like softer chords and removing the synthy aspects of the original to match the tone of the movie, as well as a few lyric changes
I remember seeing commercials for this film all the time and while it looked very beautiful to look at and very colorful it didn’t exactly grab my attention! Is there a way to watch this film?
Yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!! I fell in love with this movie when I saw it April of this year! It’s such a beautiful story of love and friendship, and to see something beautiful and resonant and, dare I say, magical, is so wonderful! I’m so happy you love this movie! This is a comfort movie for me, and it has moments that always make me cry!
The reason many havent seen this one (compared to its sisters) is because its an apple tv original. Meaning its only available on a streaming service few know about, let alone have access to.
I remember having this movie's release marked in my calender because I was already a huge fan of cartoon saloon's work with secret of kells, song of the sea, and the breadwinner. I highly recommend after viewing Song of The Sea to check out The Breadwinner. It's their only film that doesnt have celtic influences, but is beautiful just the same.
I truly appreciate how fun you are to watch & how you always suggest such unique films I've never heard of. 🙏❤️🔥🙏 Maybe one day these industry cogs will get the hint. 🤷🏾♀️
So glad someone is finally talking about this amazing movie! I watched it in 2020 and I fell in love with the artstyle and just the movie in general! Its definitely still one of my favorite movies.
I absolutely love how you use spiritfarer soundtrack and Gris I think in this one in your videos. Absolutely incredibly soundtracks. Oh, also the movie is fanta stick
Under the B*stard Oliver Cromwell an English coloniser. The wolfs in Ireland were killed and that's why we don't have wolfs today. Also the majority of trees were cut down. Because the English wanted to build ships out of the wood to sail of and terrorise other places. Lol So the animation actually touches on real things that happened.
Oh, I love this movie so much. It’s literally in my list of most important movies that I love in my life. Fun fact I had to hear it’s getting a sequel. And I checked, and it was official.
Honestly wolfwalkers is one of my favourite movies, i put off watching it but when I did all of the emotional scenes had me sobbing, all of them with their own feelings attached, all of them conveyed so well, PLEASE go watch this movie!!
FINALLY!! I watched this back in December 2021 and I loved the 2d animation and the fluidness of it. As a person who wants to learn how to animate and is going to college for illustration, I love this movie its such a breath of fresh air for 2d animation
The movie, Wolfwalkers is honestly one of my favorites and top it all off. I was inspired by Doctor Strange at one point and a similar ability, if not the exact same ability that they have in this movie for different characters.
Straight up after your last video and everything you get hyped about in general covering any of your videos. I was so surprised you hadn’t done this one yet. Better late than never!
Probably not gonna watch this movie cause if I remember correctly it's an Prime movie and I have too many subscriptions already, but I so enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for making them for our enjoyment. Always a pleasure to see you.
I absolutely love this movie! I keep watching it whenever I need a pick me up. I'm never disappointed with cartoon saloon films ever. I love them so so much
I like that you review movies that are not so well known but are works of art. by the way you should also do a review of marcel the shell with shoes on!
It really shocks me how little I know about these recent masterpieces of animation, thanks for keeping us informed Pig, gonna watch the film with my sister tonight 👍🏼
This movie is so gorgeous and incredible and I literally only got an apple tv subscription so I could rewatch it as many times as possible during that month. It’s genuinely one of my favorite movies and I wish more people could watch it without all the paywalls and limits it’s been shoved behind. It deserves more recognition.
wished there was a second movie or a movie in the same universe. i’ve watched wolfwalkers as soon as it came out on apple but none of the others. it was so good and impacted me deeply many of the scenes are fantastic allegories to real world issues our society faces daily. love the artstyle as well so refreshing. absolutely loved it and cried at many parts, beautiful film more people need to watch.
I think this is also a really good story about the conquest over the Irish people by the English. The Lord Protector representing the English Church asserting that the nature based pagann beliefs of the Irish are nonsense and stopping at nothing to stamp out the paganism.
Video has been blocked in some countries. No idea how this movie is ACTIVELY doing everything in their power to make sure no one sees it. Puts it on Apple TV and now they block the video. No wonder no one talks about it.
UA-cam really doesn’t want us to see how good this movie really is
Yeah, which is unfortunate because Cartoon Saloon makes great animation and should have more attention and support! Don't know why they went with Apple TV to stream it behind a paywall, though I guess it's because other streaming services didn't know what to do with it I guess?
Bruh this is bs.....kinda a shame cuz this was the only reason I even got apple, their movies are ass ngl
EXACTLY! Even looking in the dvd section there are almost 0 dvds besides one type that doesn’t play in most regions.
Thank you for reviewing this film. It really does need more attention!

As a pagan, thank you for taking just a moment to say something kind and she’d light on the more peaceful side of witches, wiccans, and pagans.

It simply astounds me how great this damn movie is.
Love all Cartoon Saloon movies...This one is as beautifully told as all ♥♥♥Thank you
YES THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING AURORA AND THAT IM RUNNING WITH THE WOLVES SONG, I LOVE HER MUSIC SM
It was a real shame none of these three movies won an oscar
Or any other awards in that matter.
little fun fact, wolfwalkers was animated fully on paper frame by frame before they animated over it digitally
All these Irish movies deserves better. Brandon and Secret of Kells, Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers. Such great and beutiful movies.
The reason many havent seen this one (compared to its sisters) is because its an apple tv original. Meaning its only available on a streaming service few know about, let alone have access to.
It's on bluray too.
Finally I've been waiting on you to do wolfwalkers
I love this movie it has everything I love mythology, wolves, animation
I truly appreciate how fun you are to watch & how you always suggest such unique films I've never heard of. 🙏❤️🔥🙏 Maybe one day these industry cogs will get the hint. 🤷🏾♀️
Babe wake up, BionicPig just uploaded
This definitely looks worth watching.
So glad someone is finally talking about this amazing movie!
I watched it in 2020 and I fell in love with the artstyle and just the movie in general!
Its definitely still one of my favorite movies.
film got lost in covid lockdown, so didn't get a proper cinema release and then on apple TV content.
Fun fact: Lord Protecter's name is Oliver Cromwell
This video made me revisit the movie again. The animation is so good and I'm glad you covered it.
I'm actively sobbing at the spiritfarer music in the background. Maaaan
Yes! I'm so glad you watched this movie.
Its such a pretty movie and the story made me cry. I watch it now and then when I need to feel something
As a person who wants to learn how to animate and is going to college for illustration, I love this movie its such a breath of fresh air for 2d animation
the song that aurora made for the movie slaps
I love them so so much
saw this movie with my family, the ending scene looked so calm that mom took a screen shot to have it as a background image on a few devices
This movie was single-handedly among the best things to come out of the pandemic, A TRUE MASTERPIECE
Luckily I already had one because of Prehistoric Planet.
It did get a blu ray release so you don't need apple plus to watch it.
broooo i cant believe that after other plp and me tellin him to watch the movie he finally talks bout it, it truly makes me so happy
i like to say the whole movie was done and recorded on paper. non of this was done on computer ^^ such a stunning movie
Man, this movie is criminally underrated 😭
wished there was a second movie or a movie in the same universe. i’ve watched wolfwalkers as soon as it came out on apple but none of the others. it was so good and impacted me deeply many of the scenes are fantastic allegories to real world issues our society faces daily. love the artstyle as well so refreshing. absolutely loved it and cried at many parts, beautiful film more people need to watch.
I think this is also a really good story about the conquest over the Irish people by the English. The Lord Protector representing the English Church asserting that the nature based pagann beliefs of the Irish are nonsense and stopping at nothing to stamp out the paganism.
Nah nah nah I wanna know what this man’s is cookin in the kitchen with all dat musical gear in the background there
I've been super curious about this movie since I Love both Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells.
I always hated how no one talks about this movie, tysm for giving it some much deserved love!
