I think the foundation in the water tactic, at least on the original video, is a marketing tactic used by Chinese influencers to help sell the makeup as 'waterproof'. Like 'oh its been dunked in water but it still works because they didn't mix'. And american tiktokers have gotten it mixed up thinking it was recommending people to put their foundation in water lol
Robert, I am a man, who just turned 60. I grew up with all girls. I have kept up with all the current hair styles and makeup tricks, since the mid-70's. I helped all of the girls get ready, by helping with hair and makeup - I learned about contouring and bronzer in about 1977. So, yes, it has been around, and is not something new. (I 'did' both grandmothers' hair, for their funerals; I did nails and makeup on my maternal grandmother, for her funeral; I did nails, hair, and makeup on my mother, for her funeral; I helped with my mother's only sister's hair for her funeral; and I assisted with everything for my mother-in-law's funeral. I did their hair, makeup, and nails, in life, so it made since that I would do it for them, their very last times.)
@@hyararichielli - thank you...I genuinely did. In fact, my oldest daughter had problems getting her really long hair into 'space buns', for work, yesterday morning; so I did them. I still cut both of my youngests' hair, and help with makeup and hairstyles, from time to time...it is nice they only trust me, for those things.

Robert, I'm so glad you stood up for those of us who use makeup because we want to. I rarely ever used makeup for the first 35 years of my life, and then I got cancer. Suddenly I had to learn how to draw on my face! I had no eyebrows, no eyelashes, and I was anemic a lot of the time so my lips were very very pale. I learned about makeup then (mostly from you!), and now I continue to use makeup a lot of the time because it turned into a hobby. It was great to be able to transform my face into whatever I wanted! Anyway, sorry for the long story, just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you!
Becoming ill, made me dive into UA-cam makeup videos as well because the medications dehydrate my entire body & have just ruined my skin. I also found the videos cheer me up. When I’m in rougher patches & stuck in bed, they make me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile because I’m learning something. The beauty of it, art aspect, also gives me an emotional boost. While I’m still trying to get an expensive skincare routine to be able to wear foundation without dead body looking dry skin, I can wear makeup again sometimes, & I think I’m pretty close to getting my system down.
I agree with roberts opinion on the makeup scam thing. Literally doing makeup in the mornings is my FAVORITE part of my day. I adore doing eyeshadow and i HATE not being able to do my makeup. it’s practically therapeutic for me
Same! I enjoy the process of getting ready, it’s entirely my selfish “me” time ….the process is very much therapeutic for me too. I’ll wake up early and sacrifice sleep, that part of the day is often the best part of my day. Totally not a “scam”, sounds like that dude is totally “mansplaining” ….I don’t do anything to my face for anyone but myself, it’s for my enjoyment and to express my own creativity. Its meditation to me. If I cant do it for a couple days I don’t feel right. And i’m not talking about full face 2016 makeup, I’m talking about the makeup the suits me which is like eyeshadow and concealer or liner and lashes. Hell, if I have the time to do 2016 makeup I would LOL. It’s just my favorite part of the day and I don’t do it for men I do it for me.
same makeup is like a theraphy for me and to also show my creativity, it's really fun and I do it for me and not to impress anybody. Sometimes I'll do a natural look if I'm lazy but I'll also do some artistic makeup. Makeup is art and art is subjective, if you like the look then go rock it bestie :3
I’m glad it’s a happy experience for some but it’s just plain old stressful for me. Like I feel like I end up looking worse and like I don’t know what I’m doing no matter how many tutorials I watch and information I get. Like seriously makes me want to cry because I feel like I look terrible and there’s nothing I can do to get myself to even a basic level that majority of women can doing their make up. I love the conversation around makeup being forced vs self-care. For most of my life, I felt like I was required to wear makeup to appear "professional " or "put together " or "like an adult woman". I would wear as little as I could get away with because it felt like a chore. When I started working from home, I stopped wearing makeup (and started doing skincare) and got more comfortable in my own skin. Then I found this channel and started practicing the techniques and suddenly makeup became fun! Now I wear makeup when and how I want to - which is sometimes just creating eye looks in the middle of the night and then washing them off. 🤣 I never thought I would enjoy makeup but now I am building a small collection of eyeshadow palettes. Lol I'm also getting interested in makeup history. I recently bought the Pretty Boys book and I'm looking forward to reading it. Would love any other makeup history resource recommendations. ❤️📚
Lol I'm kind of the same in some aspects. I personally always refused to wear makeup when I was younger for gender dysphoria reasons, but I did feel pressured into it because of my acne and well, appearance to put it lightly. I only started enjoying makeup when I got into watching channels like Robert's and now I just do my makeup for fun at home because it's a fun thing to do and practice. Wild how anything is better when you don't feel pressured into it.
I just didn’t. I was bad at it, so I embraced my tomboyish ways. Then lockdown and I got decent at it thanks to UA-cam. Now I happily wear it daily, 15 minutes to go all out. I love it!

When I’m feeling down (i have depression and sometimes get into bad episodes) I make myself do my make up… because it makes me feel pretty, it makes me happy! If I can’t feel sparkly and shimmery inside imma be a disco all on the outside!

Before I figured out my sexuality later on when I got older, I literally had a jackass of an ex boyfriend who hated drawn eyebrows. He always criticized & picked on me from the way I drew my brows. He also said he didn't like women wearing makeup, so being a naive girl I listened to him & stopped. I felt ugly & like I wasn't doing anything right & that it was bad. Like the majority of the time it is always a straight man who would be the one to talk smack when it comes to makeup all the time & be the one to make you feel bad.
This kind of man assumes everything a woman does is to attract him. It does not even enter his tiny brain that a woman would put effort into something that isn't specifically for the male gaze. Says so much more about them than anything else.
I thought It wasn't common to put on makeup and then immediately take it off. My roommates find it so weird that I would do heavy colorful makeup an hour from bedtime or when I'm just lounging around the house in pjs. I enjoy makeup so much and I don't understand how people don't realize its an artistic medium lol
As a woman and as a feminist who enjoys the self-expression and artistry that can be found in makeup, but who also struggles with insecurity, I'm gonna say the social effects of makeup are complicated I don't think we can totally simplify it one way or the other It's too individual and for many people they experience both sides depending on the moment
It's really interesting..."complicated" is the best way to put it. What's fascinating to me is that even though makeup is considered a "feminine, frivolous" sort of thing, there are studies that show women who wear makeup are perceived as more competent and sharp (ie. stereotypical masculine attributes) in a workplace setting than bare-faced women! So people CANNOT say that women wear makeup just to look hot for guys. However, the idea that we have to enhance our features just to be respected is problematic in itself. I dunno, it gives me a headache... I personally love makeup myself but it's weird to really think deeply about it.
While I enjoy putting on makeup at 2am just to immediately take it off bc it gives me a confidence boost, I think makeup as it is rn still reinforces a very narrow beauty standard. I have extensive knowledge of what parts of my face aren't conventionally attractive and I "correct" that with makeup to look "presentable" and "put together" to take advantage of the halo effect. For me, having decent makeup skills is another way to use my privilege of time and money. I agree, it's complicated
I came to the comment section to talk about this same idea. I think if we were able to survey people who wear makeup, I think that most would agree that makeup is enjoyable and they do it for themselves and I think they would be truthful in that answer. However, if we were to test those same people and force them to go in public without makeup, there would be a lot of them who wouldn't want to or would feel uncomfortable doing so - because they are insecure without makeup, they don't think they look their best, it makes them uncomfortable, etc. That is the complicated part of this - I would want every person to feel comfortable in their skin without makeup. I know I only got to that point in the last few years, where I don't second guess leaving the house without makeup on. I do still choose to wear makeup I certain situations, but it's nice that I don't feel the insecure compulsion to do so anymore.

There are some good contouring shades made specifically for deep skintones nowadays but they're usually wildly expensive which is utter bullshit honestly
I feel products have come a long way! Growing up it was fashion fair and black opal. That was really it. Then Mac. Now I feel like I can walk into any store and find my shade. Although it's not easy for everyone it is so much better. I have been able to find affordable products to fit my needs!!
Yeah. The shadow thing is nice, but complexion products come in much larger containers, making them more economical. I try to support black owned brands, in order to show that the wider shade ranges are economically viable. Uoma, Mented, Beauty Bakerie and even the Fenty matchsticks are proof that a big shade range, with multiple undertones are here to stay.
I think it’s also important to remember that contouring *that* heavily is not going to look like a “snatched jawline” in person, no matter how skilfully you execute it, it’s going to look like you’ve drawn a darkened triangle on your neck. Very little contouring is trying to look “natural” and that’s fine, but I think more emphasis needs to be put on the fact that if you do UA-cam/Instagram/tiktok contour to wear in everyday life it’s not gonna look slimming or snatched or contoured, you’re just gonna look like you’ve got lines drawn on your face and you need to be aware of that. If people can see you in 3D, you can’t fool them with manufactured shading
Absolutely...! I also can't wrap my head around the nose contouring (which makes me sad how much woman tend to hate their noses that are not Michael-Jackson-after-surgery-slim) and putting strong silver/gold highlights on the tip of the nose etc. It looks so off in person. I imagine people see it on social media but don't think of the natural light at all :(
Boy nobody is expecting you to prime and highlight and contour etc, it’s just fun options that are available to us now 😆 Makeup is fun and beautiful and you can create a whole glam look if you want to or wear only a tinted lip-balm for the day if that’s what you feel like! ☺️
After having a baby three months ago, me putting on makeup makes me feel rejuvenated. It's a way for me to get out and feel like 'more than just a mum' because 99% of the time that is how I feel nowadays. One thing that has always been true is makeup can be tailored however you want it to be. Makeup is expression more than ever!
Makeup for me is therapeutic. I do agree brands are doing too much. Look…I love ColourPop. Their eyeshadows are so great and I have my fair share of their palettes. But they are literally coming out with a new collection every week and sometimes twice/week. It’s usually just their same shadows with a different and sometimes not so different color story.
I agree but to play devil's advocate clothing companies also release modified versions of t-shirts et c it doesn't mean we but then all, just our favourite. Our problem is we are more tempted by make up 😀
I'm so happy you mentioned some of the many the reasons WHY people like to wear make-up. My ex asked my why I wore make-up and told me I shouldn't have to 😒.. I never stopped wearing make-up for anyone! I have loved make up since I was in 8th grade. Like you said, it's a form of expression. You can change it with your moods, & the possibilities are endless. When I was a teenager it gave me more confidence because I had acne, and I used it to cover it up. I also liked to play up my eyes to accentuate the color of them. I started wearing make-up in the 80's and I'd go to department stores like Sax 5th Avenue & Marshall Fields, go to the make-up counters to learn from the MUA's there. I learned SO much, and now thanks to videos like yours, I am still learning! I love how much variety there is now. YES people, wear ALL THE MAKE-UP!! As much or as little as you want. It's a great way to express yourself. Just like through clothes or hair, it's fun! And if something can put more beauty in the world, I am HERE FOR IT!
I agree, plus you don't see folk complaining about people who go to hairdressers or but new clothing. If we but more make up for a change it's seen as unnecessary. I know it can get out of hand but basically it's a hobby for most 😀
I love that you mentioned the artistry. Before, long long ago in the 90s (I'm so old) only magazines and runways had interesting and artistic looks. I love the way that makeup is being used as a medium. And some of these artists are incredible. Also, the shift of gender has been exciting to observe. I love seeing makeup normalized for all genders. 💜
I saw a makeup tutorial from (I think Cosmo) in the late 80s, by an artist who is still practicing now. I was surprised at how much advice was still pretty solid and still used, and how subdued and versatile the look was. It just went to show that underneath all the trends and gimmicks, the sound advice has always been present in certain places. Also why I ignore influencers who pay too much attention to what is and is not trendy.
@@rvanderjagt5944 Yes I have the same experience getting very good advice from older sources..some concepts, like working with one's bone structure, light and shade, drawing attention to the right areas, etc. are eternal! Just swap in the latest shades and formulas.

I was in high school in the 80s and college in the 90s and I learned makeup watching my mom and my sister....my sister then worked at the clinique counter and she gave me tips...or I would look at the pictures of the supermodels in magazines....and even then it was foundation blush lipstick eyeliner and a bit of mascara...then I kind of gave up on makeup....for years....then UA-cam came along and people like taxi and Wayne goss...and Robert!! Got me excited about putting on and CREATING LOOKS!! ABOUT REALLY GOOD TECHNIQUES AND COLOR COORDINATION AND THE RIGHT TYPES OF PRODUCTS FOR MY SKIN! I'm 49 and have never been more excited to get ready with makeup whereas earlier in my life it was almost a chore that I HAD to do....now I love doing pink and purple looks for church or black shadow with sparkle for going out to dinner with the hubs and I deaf what anybody thinks cuz I love it!!! So yes do u what u want...or dont...do what makes u feel good....and then feel good about yourself and your own beauty!!!
I agree with all your points regarding your breakdown of that guy’s video. I don’t think makeup has ever been forced on me, I just like the artistry and the routine of putting on makeup. It’s something that allows me to take the time to center myself and feel more confident because I have a bit more control over my image. Also, I think there are too many brands atm and a lot of people - brands are owned and operated by people, they don’t simply exist - are releasing items just to compete with other brands & not actually introducing better formulas with more sustainable packaging. We need to focus on improving and not over-consuming products - and idc if I don’t buy something, product that doesn’t sell is most likely being thrown out and creating more waste so creating products that are more effective and have 100% recyclable packaging would definitely help the makeup industry as well as all other industries.
I'm honestly so tired of hearing the whole "You don't need that much makeup" "You wear too much makeup" "you're prettier without makeup" "if she wears this much makeup she's fake or insecure." And weirdly people think that they're helping by saying this, but it's gotten to the point where they're making people feel bad for their passion or even expressing themselves by going all out - like no Sandra I'm not trying to impress a guy, I just want to smother myself in glitter ok?

I couldn’t agree with you more about using makeup for mental health purposes! I can’t tell you how often I do my makeup when I know I’m not even going out, because it helps greatly reduce my anxiety. There’s something so soothing and meditative about having quiet time, where you’re just able to light a scented candle, grab a glass of wine or a coffee drink, listen to some music, a podcast, or watch UA-cam, while just being able to play with your makeup. It can be very calming, therapeutic, and joyful for me, even if I know I’m just gonna wash it all off when I’m done.
I hardly ever wear makeup anymore but I still want to stay up to date with the new technology, new techniques and purchase new products for when I do decide to wear makeup. Just like all the other interests in my life, please don't let people restrict my joy!!
I learned to contour doing photography make up in a studio. When it became a "thing", I was pretty shocked because I always felt it was something only necessary under a certain type of light etc. But really, people can do what they want with their makeup, there are no laws. I did have to agree with that guy on the blatant greed/consumerism in the celebrity make-up industry.
I've been into makeup most of my life. It was never forced on me. It was something that I wanted in my life. I would never tell someone else that they needed makeup though.
That guy had a valid point. But I do feel that the community has grown in a good way in other aspects: color range for POC, and acceptance of trans and gender fluidity in the community are just two examples that come to mind.
Just the acceptance of creativity is so great, too. Before it was all about looking attractive and fulfilling the beauty standards. Now you can use colours and rainbow highlighters and heart shaped freckles! As someone with quite good skin, dark thick eyebrows, etc. I never felt the *need* to use makeup when other girls started wearing it, I thought it was just to “fix your flaws”, but I've fallen in love with the crazy tiktok e-girl looks. You don’t “need” makeup, you can just want to have fun! I also feel like the “you have to do all these steps and products and a ton of products” has started to subside in favour of more minimalistic looks, like the Glossier look. My personal issue is trying to marry the minimalistic, natural skin/base with the bright colors and designs on the eyes, cheeks or lips 😅
@@JasminMiettunen honestly I think part of the rise in creativity is because things that were pretty underground to a majority of people, or things that were countercultural have now gained a wider audience through social media and certain reality tv shows. Like, I think drag has absolutely become more encouraged and accepted into the mainstream due to the effects of shows like rupaul's drag race - and with that comes more people embracing the wacky things you can do with drag makeup cause there are so many drag queens and kings out there who are doing incredible, out-there stuff with their faces! It's straight up art! Also countercultural movements with very distinct aesthetics, like the 'crazy tiktok e-girl looks' you mentioned have become more visible due to social media and people who proudly post their fashion moments online and I think that has encouraged a lot more people to experiment with their style, including their makeup! I do still think that there are a lot of pressures on women to look a certain way, and often makeup is promoted as being the thing that will get you looking that way, and I think that part has absolutely nothing to do with those eye-catching out-there looks. But I definitely also agree with the guy when he said we're made to think we absolutely NEED all of those products, and I know Robert has mentioned it before in some of his older videos where he reviewed youtube MUAs and the way they approach makeup. Like you don't need contour and primer and foundation and you don't NEED to bake in order to get a good look, those are just techniques that can be useful for certain skintypes and certain situations.
I had a bad mental health day today, and after work thought I'd sit down on my bed and do my makeup watching Robert to feel better, I FEEL SO SEEN 💛 You cannot tell me makeup is just for the male gaze, it is 100% self care!
To me, in addition to makeup being artistry and a relaxing experience, makeup gives control over my appearance that I did not have in the past due to lack of access and education. There are features that I am no a fan of, like dark circles or redness, but now I can choose how or if I present those things. We do the same thing with clothing choices; most people don't wear the same stuff to a night out as they wear to the gym or Wal-Mart.

Love this! I’m glad you covered that TikTok about makeup being a scam. I remember when I watched it a while ago I felt bad because I enjoy makeup and how it makes me feel. It’s bad enough dealing with all the toxic masculinity around “I only like natural girls with no makeup” when you’re a makeup lover without adding another layer of negativity onto something you enjoy. 💜
Why would you feel bad about enjoying makeup? And why pay attention to men who say that? One thing I hate about social media is how we internalize people’s opinion when they’re just that an opinion and these ppl don’t know it’s personally and we don’t know them personally.
I agree about the makeup as a “scam” thing, I can see how some brands and influencers push products but as an artistry it’s grown. Culturally, it can be forced on you or gatekept from you. Makeup is much more accessible for all genders and ages and ethnicities, formulations have improved, shade ranges have improved, more brands are cruelty free and vegan, the price range has expanded, and the education to learn about techniques is FREE on youtube and social media. Yes, capitalism or cultural expectations can take it too far, but it’s definitely not a scam.
Makeup being a scam I don’t necessarily agree with but the mass consumerism in the beauty industry bothers me a bit. I fell into it big time in the height of beauty UA-cam and just had way too much. I try to be very selective now and have really trimmed down my makeup collection because I have so much more than I could ever practically use.
I’ve been binging your videos today and wanted to leave a comment about the modern day scam guy. I completely agree that makeup-wearing people have more agency and choice than ever before. I do want to add that the whole women and femme presenting people are considered more professional with makeup is not gone. I was told to wear makeup to a job interview just last month. I use makeup as a kind of therapy. It's dedicated, blocked out time during my day where I solely focus on this one thing and not overthink and worry. I get creative, play with colours, textures and scents. It's fun. It's not for someone else's approval of me. 🖤
I really appreciate the idea of makeup for self-care and fun, and your focus on "need vs enjoy." I, as an adult, have the right and access to add sparkles to my face, so I do, but I don't have to (and don't) contour with contour. Also: Thank you for reminding a out not setting the under eye. I just love the way that you explain things. I am literally one of those people who just play with makeup and go and wash it off. It is totally an escape/self care moment for me. It feels like art and self expression rather than being vain. Totally agree with you that people get caught up in thinking all make up is vain because it's associated with image but that's just simply not true. You are so right about it, i see makeup and painting as arts and i would love to be able to buy stuff for both at the same store. But i would possibly risk putting paint on my face because i thought it was a bright lipstick or something lol, as most of what i wear is not "basic" colors
@@arielruby13 yes! There is different types of paint for different superficies, like paint for wall, for wood, for glass, for paper, and paint for skin, which is called makeup!
We did it we just never called it contour. I'm 58 years old and still learn new things but have never changed what they call contour now. 🖤💜 Oh and I have never baked!
I used to collect revolution products. Started when they first launched. I was a die hard supporter and went to a lot of their events. It was nice that they were a brand with affordable products. Then prices went up, quality went down and it was all about the money to them. The consumer didn't matter anymore as long as the owners were getting richer. I'm glad that a professional such as Robert gives a voice to what us old revoholics have known for a long time.
Not related to the video but i just wanna let you know. Last year was kinda tough for me, my mental health got worse to the point i had to drop out of college and almost lost my life. Watching your videos was one of very few things that keep me going during that tough time. Now guess what, I finished makeup school, started working as pro MUA & my life has been much happier! I like to use a setting spray. Like UD All Nighter on a makeup sponge as a final step. No cakey look like a powder gives and it really does help to keep makeup in place during sweaty, humid conditions. Hope that helps.
Green marble selr is my go to. I do factory work, and the place isn’t climate controlled, and has hit temps of 130F on the floor. I do dab at my face with a rag, but I still have a good face on 8-12 hours later. The green is very alcohol forward, but there are other versions.

As an adult who grew up with a 'you are a straight boy so no make-up' dad I now love to play with it. Thanks to my therapy (depression) I learned I pushed that side from me out. First just tried some things at home but went out once with just some shadow and mascara under my sunglasses. My inner diva came out and I felt strong (fierce? yeah lets go with fierce) and was just shocked. Now I just do whatever I want, so many people are 'normal' why not be a black sheep and brighten things up. So glad my girlfriend supports me and loves to see me do what I love. Loved the fact that you mentioned the artistry, the confidence and brought up how much positive things make up can bring. The whole scamming thing is just a little bit of fallout in a bright look. You need to be critical with 'Do I realy need this?' but that goes for most things in life.

Thank you! Thank you! I am 51 and I laugh when people think makeup ”tricks” are recent! Yes, they are on social media now, but for crying out loud! I started wearing eye pencil on my water line in 1982 (aged 11) and used lipgloss to get a dewy face when I was in my early 30ies. Blush has been used to contour forever and I have been putting a radiant silver, gold, pink or lavender ”dot” close to my tear duct since the early 90ies! Many were we that never did the total matte and powdered face, but high lighted our cheek bones with irridescent shadows! We mixed those shadows with Cover Girl foundations and Estee Lauder foundations. We used fake eye lashes (but not the utgly last extension ones trending a few years back that are so obvious it hurts) usually a few on the side of our eyes to get the now so trendy cat eye look. We used smokey eye techniques and fixed our brows. So there. It’s not new for us having been inte makeup since we were pre-teens!
There is SO much ridiculous disrespect towards women MUAs and women who enjoy makeup. I remember on first day of college a faculty member said to me "it's different, *you* want to be an actual artist and half of them just want to doit on themselves." Gross and offensive. Firstly, so what if they did?? Secondly, there were SO many immensely talented artists there and everyone deserved equal respect/treatment. Being a boy or man is not a flippin' qualification!! Not in any job or hobby! Ridiculous. And every problem with "over-consumption" of makeup/beauty products is just a symptom of a capitalist society based around consumerism and infinite growth. It applies to *every* product and *every* hobby but makeup and traditionally "feminine" things are singled out every time. There are people with walls full of vinyl records, Funko Pops, or football team merch scoffing at makeup enthusiasts! World is not on fire because someone bought a new lip gloss. We should all aim to be conscious ethical consumers but it is no substitute for structural change.
I definitely use makeup to "look good". I have issue with a lot of hormonale acne, sometimes severe for around 15 years now and the only thing that somewhat helps is the pill. As a result of that my sink as marks,severe dullness,huge pore etc Adding to that my health issues that ultimately also reflect on my face and the lack of sleep that results from it,on a daily bases I just look ill and in bad shape and makeup makes me appreciate my face because it makes it go from reminding me of my skin issues and illness to what it kind of would have been like if didn't have all of this. It's sad to say but it also makes people be nicer because they don't see me as this person who is ill or has something wrong with her.
Robert you should do a make up history series!!!!!! I’d watch that like i’d watch a Netflix murder documentary series. You can do it based on type of product like blush, mascara, highlight ❤️☺️
A possible video idea or maybe a series would be a history of makeup? My ears perked up when you said you are really into the history of it. I think that could be fun for a lot of people. Just the couple of tidbits you shared were interesting.
Honestly I agree with the makeup scan part of your video and what you said. Makeup and fashion are both things that have such a special place in my heart because I love to express my self and show who I am. Especially Makeup is important to me because it was one of my favourit things to do in the morning before I went to work. And for some time ut litarly was the only thing keeping me going in a time if my life where everything seemed so hopeless. So yeah I dont need a man tell me I look pretty without Makeup I know that.

I LOVE your explanation and education in response to that guy who was pretty anti-makeup. I’m in love with makeup because it’s fun to me to design different looks and to have fun with matching it with my outfits. I do it for me, not because of pressure to look a certain way or because a man told me to. I have bipolar depression and days can be really rough for me. Watching your videos though and being inspired by your looks and teaching brings me to a really positive place because now I’m having fun! I really enjoyed this video (and loved loved loved your purple eye look. Purple is the best!!) 😊💜
I used to always use too bright of a concealer and I was basically highlighting my darkness. I thought there wasn’t a concealer pigmented enough to cover the darkness and it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was either. But then I got a good undertone concealer with a little salmon or a little yellow and whallah!! Magic happened, so it is always good to see people pointing this out for others who struggled with their under eye darkness like I did for so many years.

Hi Robert! Thanks for the video! I would really appreciate a video about makeup for people with facial scars. I really respect your opinion, so I would love to learn from you. I have heavily scarred skin from teenage acne, and I know people talk about "texture" in videos but I rarely see it actually addressed with its own content. My makeup is so much prettier and more enjoyable since I started following you, but I still struggle with the scarring and pitting. My makeup will look so beautiful, and then the moment the wrong product touches the scars I feel like the Joker.

I am 50 and I have only in the last 3 or so years started getting interested in makeup. Prior to this I used to wear a bit of smudged eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss but since I have lost a lot of weight, I feel better about myself and I am enjoying the self care part of makeup and celebrating that I have made a huge change in my life.

I loved what you said about people using make up and artistry and mental health. I can tell you that my "me" time is doing my makeup. It's like therapy for me. I love doing it and it's relaxing. Has the makeup industry blown up a bit? YES but also i like that I have so many options to chose from and it allows me to do all kinds of different things. 3 years ago makeup was just something I had to hurry an throw on to cover my red cheeks and under eye bags before I went to work but over the course of being isolated because of covid I really discovered the beauty world on you tube and it turned something that was a pain in my ass every morning into something I couldn't wait to play with everyday. Definitely contoured and highlighted as a goth kid around the 2000. Just didn't use the word or products made for it. My favorite "highlight" was a white eye shadow from L'oreal. Makeup is accessible to more shades of people and more budgets now.

You are so right about the self care side of makeup! I don't wear makeup for anyone but myself. In fact my husband tells me I don't need to wear makeup. I am 46 yrs old and I lost 60 lbs in the last year and I am working on feeling good about myself and battling depression. When I am happy with how my makeup looks I just feel better. I am by no means an expert at applying makeup but I am learning at my old age. I don't know if I will ever be ready for contouring. I am also starting to take my skin care more seriously as well. Feeling good about yourself is so important. I love watching you Iearn a lot from you and you and your brothers crack me up!

I agree, I have fun with makeup. I love to Experiment different looks & colors, it is fun. There are some nights, when I have to relax, I take out what I have & just try different things with it. It's so relaxing for me There is certain makeup techniques I am bad at. There are certain makeup products , I have no idea what it is for & how to use it. With that said, I never felt pressure or bad about myself because I don't know how to do everything you can do with makeup. Lol, my husband never told me to go back & put more makeup on. Side-note- only one thing I will say that stress me out just a little. There is too many products & brands to choose from. I'd rather have that problem than not enough to choose from😉
I hate when ppl tell me I’m already pretty and I don’t need makeup nobody NEEDS makeup I wear makeup because I like it and your absolutely right in saying some use it for an escape that’s me I’m some lol I love putting on makeup to escape when I’m putting on my makeup it’s just me a mirror and lots of beautiful colors and I can get caught up for hours. When I was going through depression a chance to apply my makeup was sometimes the motivation for getting out of bed. So yes for me it’s an escape and At times therapy.
The “modern day scam” dude is off base … there are still a lot of women who choose not to wear makeup. His semi valid points are that it does seem like everyone has a makeup line or collab. I’m fine with it as long as it’s good! Also we need to teach girls that they don’t need to “fix” anything; they are fine how they are and makeup is for fun! 😁
I am loving the purple smokey eye. But I found that, for me, makeup makes me feel good about myself, it is an art, and it is calming for me to do it. I just picked up doing more of my makeup during Covid, and found I really like doing it but I don't do it everyday.

Growing up when my mom wore makeup I’d hear my dad say,” where are you going?” Like she had to be using it for a special occasion or have a place to be. I use makeup because it’s fun and it’s a form of creative expression for me. I tell my daughter that we don’t need makeup to be beautiful but if she would choose to use it because it makes her feel good go for it ! Yes that man had a point on what young people are exposed to through media but hopefully they have an adult in their lives to guide them to make their own positive choices for their bodies.
I stopped wearing makeup for almost 5 years and was totally fine, I picked it back up this year for FUN. I love it now and am doing it for no one but myself. I still wear nothing but lip balm 80% of days and I'm perfectly comfortable. But when I have the time and the inspiration hits I Love to spend time glamming up my face😁
I didn't know how to do a LOT of techniques until I started watching UA-cam, and to this day, my best friend is learning to do a lot of new techniques she didn't previously use but she doesn't use them all on a daily basis because that's just not her makeup routine. She's more into quick and easy, with touches of fun techniques, and I'm more into full on glam everytime I do makeup. And you know what? Her makeup always looks BEAUTIFUL. It's not about the techniques you use--it's what you're comfortable with, what you're good at and what makes you feel good. Just thought I'd throw in my two cents!

I think the foundation in the water tactic, at least on the original video, is a marketing tactic used by Chinese influencers to help sell the makeup as 'waterproof'. Like 'oh its been dunked in water but it still works because they didn't mix'. And american tiktokers have gotten it mixed up thinking it was recommending people to put their foundation in water lol

Robert, I am a man, who just turned 60. I grew up with all girls. I have kept up with all the current hair styles and makeup tricks, since the mid-70's. I helped all of the girls get ready, by helping with hair and makeup - I learned about contouring and bronzer in about 1977. So, yes, it has been around, and is not something new.
(I 'did' both grandmothers' hair, for their funerals; I did nails and makeup on my maternal grandmother, for her funeral; I did nails, hair, and makeup on my mother, for her funeral; I helped with my mother's only sister's hair for her funeral; and I assisted with everything for my mother-in-law's funeral. I did their hair, makeup, and nails, in life, so it made since that I would do it for them, their very last times.)

@@hyararichielli - thank you...I genuinely did. In fact, my oldest daughter had problems getting her really long hair into 'space buns', for work, yesterday morning; so I did them. I still cut both of my youngests' hair, and help with makeup and hairstyles, from time to time...it is nice they only trust me, for those things.

Robert, I'm so glad you stood up for those of us who use makeup because we want to. I rarely ever used makeup for the first 35 years of my life, and then I got cancer. Suddenly I had to learn how to draw on my face! I had no eyebrows, no eyelashes, and I was anemic a lot of the time so my lips were very very pale. I learned about makeup then (mostly from you!), and now I continue to use makeup a lot of the time because it turned into a hobby. It was great to be able to transform my face into whatever I wanted!

Becoming ill, made me dive into UA-cam makeup videos as well because the medications dehydrate my entire body & have just ruined my skin. I also found the videos cheer me up. When I’m in rougher patches & stuck in bed, they make me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile because I’m learning something. The beauty of it, art aspect, also gives me an emotional boost. While I’m still trying to get an expensive skincare routine to be able to wear foundation without dead body looking dry skin, I can wear makeup again sometimes, & I think I’m pretty close to getting my system down.
I agree with roberts opinion on the makeup scam thing. Literally doing makeup in the mornings is my FAVORITE part of my day. I adore doing eyeshadow and i HATE not being able to do my makeup. it’s practically therapeutic for me

I’m glad it’s a happy experience for some but it’s just plain old stressful for me. Like I feel like I end up looking worse and like I don’t know what I’m doing no matter how many tutorials I watch and information I get. Like seriously makes me want to cry because I feel like I look terrible and there’s nothing I can do to get myself to even a basic level that majority of women can doing their make up. Like what the hell am I doing wrong?
I love the conversation around makeup being forced vs self-care. For most of my life, I felt like I was required to wear makeup to appear "professional " or "put together " or "like an adult woman". I would wear as little as I could get away with because it felt like a chore. When I started working from home, I stopped wearing makeup (and started doing skincare) and got more comfortable in my own skin. Then I found this channel and started practicing the techniques and suddenly makeup became fun! Now I wear makeup when and how I want to - which is sometimes just creating eye looks in the middle of the night and then washing them off. 🤣 I never thought I would enjoy makeup but now I am building a small collection of eyeshadow palettes. Lol

Lol I'm kind of the same in some aspects. I personally always refused to wear makeup when I was younger for gender dysphoria reasons, but I did feel pressured into it because of my acne and well, appearance to put it lightly. I only started enjoying makeup when I got into watching channels like Robert's and now I just do my makeup for fun at home because it's a fun thing to do and practice. Wild how anything is better when you don't feel pressured into it.

Before I figured out my sexuality later on when I got older, I literally had a jackass of an ex boyfriend who hated drawn eyebrows. He always criticized & picked on me from the way I drew my brows. He also said he didn't like women wearing makeup, so being a naive girl I listened to him & stopped. I felt ugly & like I wasn't doing anything right & that it was bad. Like the majority of the time it is always a straight man who would be the one to talk smack when it comes to makeup all the time & be the one to make you feel bad.
This kind of man assumes everything a woman does is to attract him. It does not even enter his tiny brain that a woman would put effort into something that isn't specifically for the male gaze.

I thought It wasn't common to put on makeup and then immediately take it off. My roommates find it so weird that I would do heavy colorful makeup an hour from bedtime or when I'm just lounging around the house in pjs. I enjoy makeup so much and I don't understand how people don't realize its an artistic medium lol

As a woman and as a feminist who enjoys the self-expression and artistry that can be found in makeup, but who also struggles with insecurity, I'm gonna say the social effects of makeup are complicated
I don't think we can totally simplify it one way or the other
It's too individual and for many people they experience both sides depending on the moment
It's really interesting..."complicated" is the best way to put it. What's fascinating to me is that even though makeup is considered a "feminine, frivolous" sort of thing, there are studies that show women who wear makeup are perceived as more competent and sharp (ie. stereotypical masculine attributes) in a workplace setting than bare-faced women! So people CANNOT say that women wear makeup just to look hot for guys. However, the idea that we have to enhance our features just to be respected is problematic in itself. I dunno, it gives me a headache... I personally love makeup myself but it's weird to really think deeply about it.
It also really depends on someones skills. I am so terrible at doing make-up, that I just feel prettier without 😅
While I enjoy putting on makeup at 2am just to immediately take it off bc it gives me a confidence boost, I think makeup as it is rn still reinforces a very narrow beauty standard. I have extensive knowledge of what parts of my face aren't conventionally attractive and I "correct" that with makeup to look "presentable" and "put together" to take advantage of the halo effect. For me, having decent makeup skills is another way to use my privilege of time and money. I agree, it's complicated

I came to the comment section to talk about this same idea. I think if we were able to survey people who wear makeup, I think that most would agree that makeup is enjoyable and they do it for themselves and I think they would be truthful in that answer. However, if we were to test those same people and force them to go in public without makeup, there would be a lot of them who wouldn't want to or would feel uncomfortable doing so - because they are insecure without makeup, they don't think they look their best, it makes them uncomfortable, etc.
That is the complicated part of this - I would want every person to feel comfortable in their skin without makeup. I know I only got to that point in the last few years, where I don't second guess leaving the house without makeup on. I do still choose to wear makeup I certain situations, but it's nice that I don't feel the insecure compulsion to do so anymore.

Lack of inclusivity in the beauty world is utter bullshit. I also can't stand it when people say 'it's 2022, where's the inclusivity?'...EXclusivity in the beauty world NEVER should have been a thing, no matter the year.
There are some good contouring shades made specifically for deep skintones nowadays but they're usually wildly expensive which is utter bullshit honestly
I feel products have come a long way! Growing up it was fashion fair and black opal. That was really it. Then Mac. Now I feel like I can walk into any store and find my shade. Although it's not easy for everyone it is so much better. I have been able to find affordable products to fit my needs!!
Yeah. The shadow thing is nice, but complexion products come in much larger containers, making them more economical. I try to support black owned brands, in order to show that the wider shade ranges are economically viable. Uoma, Mented, Beauty Bakerie and even the Fenty matchsticks are proof that a big shade range, with multiple undertones are here to stay.
I think it’s also important to remember that contouring *that* heavily is not going to look like a “snatched jawline” in person, no matter how skilfully you execute it, it’s going to look like you’ve drawn a darkened triangle on your neck. Very little contouring is trying to look “natural” and that’s fine, but I think more emphasis needs to be put on the fact that if you do UA-cam/Instagram/tiktok contour to wear in everyday life it’s not gonna look slimming or snatched or contoured, you’re just gonna look like you’ve got lines drawn on your face and you need to be aware of that. If people can see you in 3D, you can’t fool them with manufactured shading
Absolutely...! I also can't wrap my head around the nose contouring (which makes me sad how much woman tend to hate their noses that are not Michael-Jackson-after-surgery-slim) and putting strong silver/gold highlights on the tip of the nose etc. It looks so off in person. I imagine people see it on social media but don't think of the natural light at all :(
Boy nobody is expecting you to prime and highlight and contour etc, it’s just fun options that are available to us now 😆 Makeup is fun and beautiful and you can create a whole glam look if you want to or wear only a tinted lip-balm for the day if that’s what you feel like! ☺️
After having a baby three months ago, me putting on makeup makes me feel rejuvenated. It's a way for me to get out and feel like 'more than just a mum' because 99% of the time that is how I feel nowadays. One thing that has always been true is makeup can be tailored however you want it to be. Makeup is expression more than ever!
Makeup for me is therapeutic. I do agree brands are doing too much. Look…I love ColourPop. Their eyeshadows are so great and I have my fair share of their palettes. But they are literally coming out with a new collection every week and sometimes twice/week. It’s usually just their same shadows with a different and sometimes not so different color story.
I agree but to play devil's advocate clothing companies also release modified versions of t-shirts et c it doesn't mean we but then all, just our favourite. Our problem is we are more tempted by make up 😀
I'm so happy you mentioned some of the many the reasons WHY people like to wear make-up. My ex asked my why I wore make-up and told me I shouldn't have to 😒.. I never stopped wearing make-up for anyone! I have loved make up since I was in 8th grade. Like you said, it's a form of expression. You can change it with your moods, & the possibilities are endless. When I was a teenager it gave me more confidence because I had acne, and I used it to cover it up. I also liked to play up my eyes to accentuate the color of them. I started wearing make-up in the 80's and I'd go to department stores like Sax 5th Avenue & Marshall Fields, go to the make-up counters to learn from the MUA's there. I learned SO much, and now thanks to videos like yours, I am still learning! I love how much variety there is now. YES people, wear ALL THE MAKE-UP!! As much or as little as you want. It's a great way to express yourself. Just like through clothes or hair, it's fun! And if something can put more beauty in the world, I am HERE FOR IT!

I love that you mentioned the artistry. Before, long long ago in the 90s (I'm so old) only magazines and runways had interesting and artistic looks. I love the way that makeup is being used as a medium. And some of these artists are incredible. Also, the shift of gender has been exciting to observe. I love seeing makeup normalized for all genders. 💜
I saw a makeup tutorial from (I think Cosmo) in the late 80s, by an artist who is still practicing now. I was surprised at how much advice was still pretty solid and still used, and how subdued and versatile the look was. It just went to show that underneath all the trends and gimmicks, the sound advice has always been present in certain places.

I was in high school in the 80s and college in the 90s and I learned makeup watching my mom and my sister....my sister then worked at the clinique counter and she gave me tips...or I would look at the pictures of the supermodels in magazines....and even then it was foundation blush lipstick eyeliner and a bit of mascara...then I kind of gave up on makeup....for years....then UA-cam came along and people like taxi and Wayne goss...and Robert!! Got me excited about putting on and CREATING LOOKS!! ABOUT REALLY GOOD TECHNIQUES AND COLOR COORDINATION AND THE RIGHT TYPES OF PRODUCTS FOR MY SKIN! I'm 49 and have never been more excited to get ready with makeup whereas earlier in my life it was almost a chore that I HAD to do....now I love doing pink and purple looks for church or black shadow with sparkle for going out to dinner with the hubs and I deaf what anybody thinks cuz I love it!!! So yes do u what u want...or dont...do what makes u feel good....and then feel good about yourself and your own beauty!!!
I agree with all your points regarding your breakdown of that guy’s video. I don’t think makeup has ever been forced on me, I just like the artistry and the routine of putting on makeup. It’s something that allows me to take the time to center myself and feel more confident because I have a bit more control over my image. Also, I think there are too many brands atm and a lot of people - brands are owned and operated by people, they don’t simply exist - are releasing items just to compete with other brands & not actually introducing better formulas with more sustainable packaging. We need to focus on improving and not over-consuming products - and idc if I don’t buy something, product that doesn’t sell is most likely being thrown out and creating more waste so creating products that are more effective and have 100% recyclable packaging would definitely help the makeup industry as well as all other industries.

I'm honestly so tired of hearing the whole "You don't need that much makeup" "You wear too much makeup" "you're prettier without makeup" "if she wears this much makeup she's fake or insecure." And weirdly people think that they're helping by saying this, but it's gotten to the point where they're making people feel bad for their passion or even expressing themselves by going all out - like no Sandra I'm not trying to impress a guy, I just want to smother myself in glitter ok?

I couldn’t agree with you more about using makeup for mental health purposes! I can’t tell you how often I do my makeup when I know I’m not even going out, because it helps greatly reduce my anxiety. There’s something so soothing and meditative about having quiet time, where you’re just able to light a scented candle, grab a glass of wine or a coffee drink, listen to some music, a podcast, or watch UA-cam, while just being able to play with your makeup. It can be very calming, therapeutic, and joyful for me, even if I know I’m just gonna wash it all off when I’m done.

I learned to contour doing photography make up in a studio. When it became a "thing", I was pretty shocked because I always felt it was something only necessary under a certain type of light etc. But really, people can do what they want with their makeup, there are no laws. I did have to agree with that guy on the blatant greed/consumerism in the celebrity make-up industry.
I've been into makeup most of my life. It was never forced on me. It was something that I wanted in my life. I would never tell someone else that they needed makeup though.
That guy had a valid point. But I do feel that the community has grown in a good way in other aspects: color range for POC, and acceptance of trans and gender fluidity in the community are just two examples that come to mind.
Just the acceptance of creativity is so great, too. Before it was all about looking attractive and fulfilling the beauty standards. Now you can use colours and rainbow highlighters and heart shaped freckles! As someone with quite good skin, dark thick eyebrows, etc. I never felt the *need* to use makeup when other girls started wearing it, I thought it was just to “fix your flaws”, but I've fallen in love with the crazy tiktok e-girl looks. You don’t “need” makeup, you can just want to have fun! I also feel like the “you have to do all these steps and products and a ton of products” has started to subside in favour of more minimalistic looks, like the Glossier look.
My personal issue is trying to marry the minimalistic, natural skin/base with the bright colors and designs on the eyes, cheeks or lips 😅
@@JasminMiettunen honestly I think part of the rise in creativity is because things that were pretty underground to a majority of people, or things that were countercultural have now gained a wider audience through social media and certain reality tv shows. Like, I think drag has absolutely become more encouraged and accepted into the mainstream due to the effects of shows like rupaul's drag race - and with that comes more people embracing the wacky things you can do with drag makeup cause there are so many drag queens and kings out there who are doing incredible, out-there stuff with their faces! It's straight up art! Also countercultural movements with very distinct aesthetics, like the 'crazy tiktok e-girl looks' you mentioned have become more visible due to social media and people who proudly post their fashion moments online and I think that has encouraged a lot more people to experiment with their style, including their makeup!
I do still think that there are a lot of pressures on women to look a certain way, and often makeup is promoted as being the thing that will get you looking that way, and I think that part has absolutely nothing to do with those eye-catching out-there looks. But I definitely also agree with the guy when he said we're made to think we absolutely NEED all of those products, and I know Robert has mentioned it before in some of his older videos where he reviewed youtube MUAs and the way they approach makeup. Like you don't need contour and primer and foundation and you don't NEED to bake in order to get a good look, those are just techniques that can be useful for certain skintypes and certain situations.
I had a bad mental health day today, and after work thought I'd sit down on my bed and do my makeup watching Robert to feel better, I FEEL SO SEEN 💛 You cannot tell me makeup is just for the male gaze, it is 100% self care!

To me, in addition to makeup being artistry and a relaxing experience, makeup gives control over my appearance that I did not have in the past due to lack of access and education. There are features that I am no a fan of, like dark circles or redness, but now I can choose how or if I present those things. We do the same thing with clothing choices; most people don't wear the same stuff to a night out as they wear to the gym or Wal-Mart.

Love this! I’m glad you covered that TikTok about makeup being a scam. I remember when I watched it a while ago I felt bad because I enjoy makeup and how it makes me feel. It’s bad enough dealing with all the toxic masculinity around “I only like natural girls with no makeup” when you’re a makeup lover without adding another layer of negativity onto something you enjoy. 💜

I agree about the makeup as a “scam” thing, I can see how some brands and influencers push products but as an artistry it’s grown. Culturally, it can be forced on you or gatekept from you. Makeup is much more accessible for all genders and ages and ethnicities, formulations have improved, shade ranges have improved, more brands are cruelty free and vegan, the price range has expanded, and the education to learn about techniques is FREE on youtube and social media. Yes, capitalism or cultural expectations can take it too far, but it’s definitely not a scam.

Makeup being a scam I don’t necessarily agree with but the mass consumerism in the beauty industry bothers me a bit. I fell into it big time in the height of beauty UA-cam and just had way too much. I try to be very selective now and have really trimmed down my makeup collection because I have so much more than I could ever practically use.
I’ve been binging your videos today and wanted to leave a comment about the modern day scam guy. I completely agree that makeup-wearing people have more agency and choice than ever before. I do want to add that the whole women and femme presenting people are considered more professional with makeup is not gone. I was told to wear makeup to a job interview just last month.

I use makeup as a kind of therapy. It's dedicated, blocked out time during my day where I solely focus on this one thing and not overthink and worry. I get creative, play with colours, textures and scents. It's fun. It's not for someone else's approval of me. 🖤
I really appreciate the idea of makeup for self-care and fun, and your focus on "need vs enjoy." I, as an adult, have the right and access to add sparkles to my face, so I do, but I don't have to (and don't) contour with contour.

I just love the way that you explain things. I am literally one of those people who just play with makeup and go and wash it off. It is totally an escape/self care moment for me. It feels like art and self expression rather than being vain. Totally agree with you that people get caught up in thinking all make up is vain because it's associated with image but that's just simply not true. I used to collect revolution products. Started when they first launched. I was a die hard supporter and went to a lot of their events. It was nice that they were a brand with affordable products.
Then prices went up, quality went down and it was all about the money to them. The consumer didn't matter anymore as long as the owners were getting richer.

I like to use a setting spray. Like UD All Nighter on a makeup sponge as a final step. No cakey look like a powder gives and it really does help to keep makeup in place during sweaty, humid conditions. Hope that helps.

Also- setting undereye concealer with a sponge dampened with setting spray works wonders! Press the spray into the skin- you'll love it.
As an adult who grew up with a 'you are a straight boy so no make-up' dad I now love to play with it. Thanks to my therapy (depression) I learned I pushed that side from me out. First just tried some things at home but went out once with just some shadow and mascara under my sunglasses. My inner diva came out and I felt strong (fierce? yeah lets go with fierce) and was just shocked. Now I just do whatever I want, so many people are 'normal' why not be a black sheep and brighten things up. So glad my girlfriend supports me and loves to see me do what I love.
Loved the fact that you mentioned the artistry, the confidence and brought up how much positive things make up can bring. The whole scamming thing is just a little bit of fallout in a bright look. You need to be critical with 'Do I realy need this?' but that goes for most things in life.

Thank you! Thank you! I am 51 and I laugh when people think makeup ”tricks” are recent! Yes, they are on social media now, but for crying out loud! I started wearing eye pencil on my water line in 1982 (aged 11) and used lipgloss to get a dewy face when I was in my early 30ies. Blush has been used to contour forever and I have been putting a radiant silver, gold, pink or lavender ”dot” close to my tear duct since the early 90ies! Many were we that never did the total matte and powdered face, but high lighted our cheek bones with irridescent shadows! We mixed those shadows with Cover Girl foundations and Estee Lauder foundations. We used fake eye lashes (but not the utgly last extension ones trending a few years back that are so obvious it hurts) usually a few on the side of our eyes to get the now so trendy cat eye look. We used smokey eye techniques and fixed our brows. So there. It’s not new for us having been inte makeup since we were pre-teens!
There is SO much ridiculous disrespect towards women MUAs and women who enjoy makeup.
I remember on first day of college a faculty member said to me "it's different, *you* want to be an actual artist and half of them just want to doit on themselves."
Gross and offensive. Firstly, so what if they did?? Secondly, there were SO many immensely talented artists there and everyone deserved equal respect/treatment. Being a boy or man is not a flippin' qualification!! Not in any job or hobby! Ridiculous.

I definitely use makeup to "look good". I have issue with a lot of hormonale acne, sometimes severe for around 15 years now and the only thing that somewhat helps is the pill. As a result of that my sink as marks,severe dullness,huge pore etc Adding to that my health issues that ultimately also reflect on my face and the lack of sleep that results from it,on a daily bases I just look ill and in bad shape and makeup makes me appreciate my face because it makes it go from reminding me of my skin issues and illness to what it kind of would have been like if didn't have all of this. It's sad to say but it also makes people be nicer because they don't see me as this person who is ill or has something wrong with her.

Honestly I agree with the makeup scan part of your video and what you said. Makeup and fashion are both things that have such a special place in my heart because I love to express my self and show who I am. Especially Makeup is important to me because it was one of my favourit things to do in the morning before I went to work. And for some time ut litarly was the only thing keeping me going in a time if my life where everything seemed so hopeless. So yeah I dont need a man tell me I look pretty without Makeup I know that.

I LOVE your explanation and education in response to that guy who was pretty anti-makeup. I’m in love with makeup because it’s fun to me to design different looks and to have fun with matching it with my outfits. I do it for me, not because of pressure to look a certain way or because a man told me to. I have bipolar depression and days can be really rough for me. Watching your videos though and being inspired by your looks and teaching brings me to a really positive place because now I’m having fun! I used to always use too bright of a concealer and I was basically highlighting my darkness. I thought there wasn’t a concealer pigmented enough to cover the darkness and it really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was either. But then I got a good undertone concealer with a little salmon or a little yellow and whallah!! Magic happened, so it is always good to see people pointing this out for others who struggled with their under eye darkness like I did for so many years.
Something about this smoky dusky purple really brings out the beautiful brown of your eyes, darling!

Hi Robert! Thanks for the video! I would really appreciate a video about makeup for people with facial scars. I really respect your opinion, so I would love to learn from you. I have heavily scarred skin from teenage acne, and I know people talk about "texture" in videos but I rarely see it actually addressed with its own content. My makeup is so much prettier and more enjoyable since I started following you, but I still struggle with the scarring and pitting. My makeup will look so beautiful, and then the moment the wrong product touches the scars I feel like the Joker.

I am 50 and I have only in the last 3 or so years started getting interested in makeup. Prior to this I used to wear a bit of smudged eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss but since I have lost a lot of weight, I feel better about myself and I am enjoying the self care part of makeup and celebrating that I have made a huge change in my life.

Has the makeup industry blown up a bit? Definitely contoured and highlighted as a goth kid around the 2000. Just didn't use the word or products made for it. My favorite "highlight" was a white eye shadow from L'oreal. Makeup is accessible to more shades of people and more budgets now.

You are so right about the self care side of makeup! I don't wear makeup for anyone but myself. In fact my husband tells me I don't need to wear makeup. I am 46 yrs old and I lost 60 lbs in the last year and I am working on feeling good about myself and battling depression. When I am happy with how my makeup looks I just feel better. I am by no means an expert at applying makeup but I am learning at my old age. I don't know if I will ever be ready for contouring. I am also starting to take my skin care more seriously as well. Feeling good about yourself is so important. I love watching you Iearn a lot from you and you and your brothers crack me up!

I hate when ppl tell me I’m already pretty and I don’t need makeup nobody NEEDS makeup I wear makeup because I like it and your absolutely right in saying some use it for an escape that’s me I’m some lol I love putting on makeup to escape when I’m putting on my makeup it’s just me a mirror and lots of beautiful colors and I can get caught up for hours. When I was going through depression a chance to apply my makeup was sometimes the motivation for getting out of bed. So yes for me it’s an escape and At times therapy.

I use makeup because it’s fun and it’s a form of creative expression for me. I tell my daughter that we don’t need makeup to be beautiful but if she would choose to use it because it makes her feel good go for it ! Yes that man had a point on what young people are exposed to through media but hopefully they have an adult in their lives to guide them to make their own positive choices for their bodies.
I stopped wearing makeup for almost 5 years and was totally fine, I picked it back up this year for FUN. I love it now and am doing it for no one but myself. I still wear nothing but lip balm 80% of days and I'm perfectly comfortable. But when I have the time and the inspiration hits I Love to spend time glamming up my face😁

I didn't know how to do a LOT of techniques until I started watching UA-cam, and to this day, my best friend is learning to do a lot of new techniques she didn't previously use but she doesn't use them all on a daily basis because that's just not her makeup routine. She's more into quick and easy, with touches of fun techniques, and I'm more into full on glam everytime I do makeup. And you know what? Her makeup always looks BEAUTIFUL.
It's not about the techniques you use--it's what you're comfortable with, what you're good at and what makes you feel good.

Yes! Make-up is self care❤️I am not putting on make-up to for anybody else than myself. I feel better, I feel more confident with with it.
