Not only was Reynolds a brilliant military mind, he accomplished what truly defines a great commander....he won over the love and loyalty of his soldiers

You know, the final cut of the movie really should have kept this scene in it. It would have established just how good a commander Reynolds was and just how missed he would be the next day.

In my "humble opinion," I believe General Buford was the best Union Cavalry officer...and possibly the best Cavalry commander in the Civil War.

@@WilliamStahl-qp4vm For my money, it's a draw between Buford and Sheridan. And both for the same reason: neither of them were so in love with the 'romance' of the cavalry that they forgot their mission... And that was something that could be said of both Custer and Stuart.

Reynolds was an amazing general. His confidence, knowledge, and leadership skills, and rank, along with the fact that his soldiers are happy to work for him just shows that he is ideal.

Totally agree with the other comments that this scene in its entirety should have made the final cut! Reynolds was a fine officer, and the directors should have told more of his story.

I highly question that this moment went down like this. It more than likely occurred in the heat of the battlefield if it occurred at all. By this Point, Ewell was pushing in form the North and Early had launched his flank assault and the Union Line was being rolled up. Buford held though the morning because AP Hill was not present to lead his men into Battle and 1 division went in one Brigade at a time Piecemeal. But by this time there was close to 20.000 confederates on the Field, many being Battle Hardened Veterans of Stonewall Jacksons old Command the Famed 2nd core of the Army of Northern Virigina. The Union line was being rolled up. Reynolds was mortally wounded attempting to stem the retreat which soon became a rout. Historians and modern-day activist have always underestimated the extent of the Victory the Army of Northern Virigina won on July 1st, 1863, because what happened on the 2nd and especially the 3rd overshadows it. Lees retreat on July 4th rendered it meaningless in the grand scale of the war, but in the moment it was a great Victory which opened up the real possibility for a moment that the tide of the War was about to change completely and that held true until the next day after Longstreet failed to reach his objective after 4 of the most brutal and bloody hours of fighting in the entire conflict.

Mike. Don't make a difference what happened July 1st. You don't look at 1 day you look at the entire thing. Lee lost.

What are you talking about? Reynolds’ first brigade arrived around 10:30am. He and his staff arrived before the the first division to direct their placement. He died hours before Rodes and Early turned the whole line.

@@donaldpratt2296 It did not go down how the film Gettysburg depicts it. July 1st was a huge win for Lee that was blunted by Ewell failing to keep pushing against a disorganized and chaotic union retreat giving them time to establish a defensive line on high ground and stabilize their ranks. Lee had a major decision to make on the night of July 1st. It was clear Meade was girding for a defensive fight. He had no thoughts of taking the offensive and had already met with a major reverse that could have easily been much worst had not the Confederates experienced uncalled for delays late in the day. Longstreet was not up and could have still been redirected to move in any direction. Had Lee been in his right mind! He would have taken the victory on July 1st and pulled away from Gettysburg and maneuvered closer to the Maryland border maybe even pushed toward Washington! Meade would have been forced to pursue and the major battle would have taken place later on ground of Lee and Longstreet’s choosing! Instead, Lee choose direct confrontation! He choose to assault fixed defenses which had time to solidify themselves due to his own subordinates bumbling his orders! It was a historic and foolhardy decision that would become one of times in History where legacies are made, Wars are won and lost, and thousands of lives in Fact the offensive power of Lee's Army were unrepairable lost with it.

@@finrodbrs Honestly they could have cut out some of the tedious waxing poetic in the movie. The big problem this movie had with the market is they tried to fit all the history into it and explain everything in long winded discussions. Lots of people out there just aren't that into history to care and it bores them.
