Old pilots during Vietnam used to say, " F-4 phantom was proof that if you put big enough engines on a brick, you could get it to fly!"😅 Glide ratio 1:5
The Phantom did have a lot of nicknames - some of the nice, some not so nice. Some of my favorites are “Rhino” and “Snoopy” because of its big nose, “Lead Sled,” “Big Iron Sled,” “Flying Footlocker,” and the “Flying Anvil!"😅🧱
I call it "Go Fast...Kick Ass".

The German nickname was Eisenschwein meaning Iron Pig

Sat in one once....never imagined an aircraft that large could have a cockpit that small.
funny enough the most spacious cockpit i sat in was the f5 which felt less cramped than the F15's

Everything on the F4 Was a compromise to fix an issue. Taken individually it was an insult to aerodynamics. Yet it worked. They also understood you can make a bus fly if they gave it big enough engines. When I see one in person though. I'm still in awe.
It's about as aerodynamically aesthetic as the early stealth planes. Just a drag machine
McDonnell Douglas was always a money first company. That's why you now have missing bolts on doorframes.

The horizontal stabilizer always struck me as a sign of a bad design. On aircraft such as the F-8 or F-105, people knew to put the hor stab down low on the tail... and to put the engine at the end of the fuselage. McDonnell seemed to just be sticking with the same conventional tail that had been on their previous aircraft designs. They needed to get the hor stabs out of the wing's wake, so they had to angle them down. The need to add fixed slots to the leading edge on the hor stabs of later models is another sign of the need to fix a poor design. OTOH, it's not as if the Phantom was the only 1950's aircraft that had questionable design choices.
That special dihedral outer wing, combined w the tail wings Canted downward, made this jet exceptionally beautiful in my eyes. I sketches this fighter jet repeatedly as a kid. I know many think it's ugly.

As a former train driver, the Phantom is one of my favourite aircraft - it might because the thing is basically a locomotive with wings on it.
Had the privilege of flying these, great aircraft. The F4s wing centre section is milled from one enormous rectangular billet of aluminium. This made it immensely strong. The folding outer sections not only provided dihedral but also made the aircraft more compact for packing into a hangar.
God bless the F-4 maintainers. An old OKIE F-4 Crew Chief told me that Bergstrom AFB had an RF-4 that you had to tow around in the parking area to get a specific panel to align and install. Awesome problem solvers!
The Phantom just looked like a mean brute, even sitting still on the ramp. Great airplane.
Ah yes the triumph of thrust over aerodynamics. There´s a great article in Smithsonian's web page (What Couldn’t the F-4 Phantom Do?) where a former pilot briefly talks about when they used F-4´s as NASAs rocket chase planes during the 60´s.
They synched a MACH 1.2 dive to the rockets countdown and "walked up" the rockets contrail to be able to film the rocket as it passed Mach 1 while matching the rockets speed for 90 seconds before breaking off. An incredible aircraft.
As an ex F4 mechanic the twin GE J79 engines were beasts. The F4 originally had questionable performance (small wing area) but these engines made the F4 awesome and more.
Ge as in general electric? I don't doubt it it just always surprises me to hear these "civilian" companies making things for solely military use and or killing like I think GE or a similar company made the 30mm cannon in the nose of the a10
Check out the DCS F4E, it's the most detailed plane in a flightsim, ever.
Put a powerful enough engine on a barn door and it'll fly, whether it's stable or not.

F-4s were still actively flying at Edwards AFB when I was stationed there 1998-2001. Loved the sound, the look and the smell. They were white with orange detailing because they were used for chase & developmental & operational test.
I also remember the Oregon ANG flying them into the 1980s as alert scramble interceptors.
Loved the F4! Used to see them fly around in West Germany during the 80’s! Awesome aircraft!
I was friends with an F-4 pilot. He said that you could probably fly the darn thing sideways without losing any performance.
When you don't have any you can't loose any so.... yeah that checks.
I always loved the look of the F4. It was a mean look . When that muscle jet was fully loaded, it had to scare the hell out of the enemy on the ground it was coming after.
Phantom was initially a T-tail, which is a low drag solution as it increases the control authority to the vertical rudder. The Navy wanted a downward pitching moment as it crossed the edge of the carrier deck, so McDonnell moved the horizontal tail to the bottom. That made the rudder less effective, so they turned the tail down, (anhedral). They needed to get back the stability that the anhedral lost. so they turned the outer wing panels up.
The F4 was literally an issue to fix another issue... It was a disaster areodynamically and did everything poorly, because everyone who had inputs for it... made it worse.

The Phantom had some dangerous handling quirks, one of them being the ‘adverse yaw demon’. At high angles of attack, the aircraft could suddenly lose control and enter a spin.
The Phantom had pretty unpleasant handling if it didn’t have its flight augmentation computers on. There was some augmentation in the pitch, yaw and roll.
Pitching with the pitch augmentation turned off the F-4 the aircraft would continue to pitch when you didn't wanted it to. Which could be quite exciting at higher speeds because you could easily exceed the G-limits, and possibly make yourself black-out.
If you rolled without the roll augmentation the aircraft would just continue rolling.
The cockpit was a mess of switches and dials. Poor ergonomics and man machine interface left the crews struggling in air combat. Combat modes involved intricate ‘switchology’ that crews found hard to keep on top of in the stress of actual war. In a period of poorly designed American fighter cockpits, the F-4 was probably the worst.
The Phantom II was far more expensive and labour intensive to build and maintain than the soviet MiG-21.
The Phantom had a very large turn radius, which would have been a huge disadvantage if did not also have better acceleration and power loadings than most rivals, enabling it to offset its turn radius with turn rate. Critically, the F-4 also had a lower G rating than the MiGs it faced.
The F-4 required extensive training and tactics to offsets its relative lack of agility and manoeuvrability compared to the MiGs it encountered in the Vietnam War.
Smokey Engines
‘Lose sight and lose the fight’, is an old fighter adage stressing the importance of maintaining situational awareness of where your enemy is. As mentioned above, the Phantom was far larger than its opponents. To further degrade its visual camouflage, it had two very smoky engines, making it visible from many miles away.
In short it was a poor design and is an example of what happens when the wrong people force designs onto an fighter aircraft.

@@wicked-w7l ...and their intended purpose was to have a short and robust landing gear that could give enough clearance from the ground for that huge propeller.
I love the F-4. I think it looks great, perhaps one of the coolest looking planes the US has developed over the decades.

My uncle used to work on the f4 at George AFB I loved going there to see them take off sometimes on the playground we would on occasion dig up ammo cases and once a live round

It was my favorite jet fighter as a kid growing up . I remember getting to watch them as a kid at the base . The sound was unmistakable.
Flew in it once, was a crew chief for years and it’s a flying tank. Smooth as silk in the sky and brutish power.

My Dad flew for the Marines 20 years. I used to pester him about how cool they looked. He said they had the glide ratio of a brick and they used more fuel than half the planes on the tarmac combined.

We live near 'vliegbasis Soesterberg' in The Netherlands.
Lots of Americans were stationed there, the whole village was buil up with Americans.
They had money, car dealers, barbers etc all benefit from them being there.
It's closed now, maybe some Americans still think about it.

Love the Phantom, I got to do a compass swing calibration on an Israeli F4 with my Dad as a kid and he used me as the eyes and voice to relay information to him from the cockpit.

Call me what you like but I think the Phantom is absolutely gorgeous. Love every darn angle and part of her. I doubt anyone has ever looked at that plane without thinking she's ready for business even when she's sitting still with no ordinance.
I was totally blessed to get a 3 hrs ride in my own jet (65-0824). I had found a valve in the blc (boundary layer control) duct on the left hand inboard flap broken during a routine inspection . I got a safety award for the find. I had asked if I could ride in my own jet. I was awarded that privilege of a lifetime. I will never forget that ride. Flaying a bit above tree top level at couple hundred knots. Was awesome. I tried to focus on something ahead of us. By the time I was getting somewhat focused on a tree , it was miles behind me. We got to to a max takeoff also. It sucked my ass to the seat, g-suit squeezed tightly. Unbelievable. Pilot to us up 8,too feet and let handle the airplane myself. I could of wet my pants. No ride will ever match that 3 hrs ride. Yes I puked my guts out. Thank for the puke bags. I have cleaned enough of some pilot or co-pilot's puke. Loved my job and my Airplane.
My great uncle Douglas weaver worked at Mcdonbel Douglas in the 50s and 60s. He helped design some if the systems on the F4. I remember seeong schematics and drawings all over his house as a small child.
It's so appropriate for its time and Era. It's a big, beautiful, fast, American muscle car with wings and weapons.
She couldn't out maneuver a B-52, but she could drag race anything that didn't say SR-71.
As a Navy RD2 on three 6 month deployments in the Mediterranean, I was grateful for the F4J’s that protected us (6th fleet ) from Bear bombers !
Had the pleasure of providing fire protection for the RF-4C at Shaw AFB in early 80s before replaced by F-16. Always amazed me to respond to BLC emergencies and see how the aircraft was flown.
They were also frigging loud when performing live egress exercises

When I was in the Air Force we restored an F-4 for a static display. Crazy how massive they are, that was a fun project.

I live in N C and could watch the F4’s fly around everyday over my home town. They did low level flights over the area to. They were and are an awesome aircraft.

And The downward slant of the horizontal stabilizer was so the wing did not block out the elevator effectiveness on a carrier approach.

In 1967 I went to old Williams Air Force Base with a neighbor who is retired Air Force guy and watch the Thunderbirds the air forces are balanced mean but put on demonstration so-they were flying F-4s at the time and it was amazing to see with my 7 year old eyes.

Growing up in the 1980s during the cold War these things used to fly over my home town all the time....not anymore tho...I guess it stopped shortly after the cold war but I miss seing them, my home town had the louisville kentucky ANG across the ohio, and my home town was sandwiched between the ohio river and an army ammunition plant, growing up I'm the 1980s the plant was in fullswing, but they closed it down in the mid to late 1990s and now it's been returned to the county for development. But truth be told, I actually miss those days.
That makes me think back to the F4U Corsair of WWII. I know the wings were bent to make the landing gear struts shorter but I wonder if it had the side effect of enhanced stability.

When I was a kid there was an air show at my local airport (Liverpool). Back then the RAF had phantoms and the red arrows flew the gnat. A phantom went over on full afterburner, the noise was deafening and I was hooked

Brilliant aircraft.
They added "Fences" to flat wing Darts. It kept the air on the wing so it could fly faster.
I know there a lot of different options. But the F-4 phantom was a fast badass looking ride and I'm glad it was ours wasn't best best kill ratio 2.5 to 1 but the rules of engagement barred U.S. pilots from shooting at planes without visual identification and the Phantom started out with no guns? But I like it. It flew for 40 years and I think was last used by Germany maybe as late as 2013...
I grew up on USMC airwing bases.
El Toro MCAS is located next to mountains. The F4s had to use afterburners on full to get airborn.
Thirty foot of flames came out of those things. Noise. And the worst part of the F4, a smoke trail.
A kerosene smell was a constant.
All those angles and edges also guaranteed that you would 100% need stitches somewhere at some point during your maintenance career... top of your head, back, shoulders... a million places you would get hurt under that thing.

When serving in Nam, loved the phantom. Its nose looked like a flying tiger at high altitude. Working out they awed me and am glad I wasn't on the receiving end.
