This is why the monopolization of media under a small group of corporations is such a dangerous thing. Companies become so obsessed with maintaining an image that they strangle the creative medium to preserve what is essentially the mental equivalent of racial purity.
Added: As much as this situation sucks, I do have to tip my hat to Rebecca for having the decency to remain objective and optimistic when a sizable chunk of the fandom is giving in to anger and despair. Especially since they didn’t even give a chance to begin with by not including Dana in talks and canceling well before it got on Disney+. Also if they care about the serialized content advertise it more on the service since that is the whole point of it for people to catch up and follow the order, I mean that’s what me niece, nephews, cousins, etc. do for such shows and they understand things flawlessly. Amounts to bad timing.
The series happened to start airing shortly after Disney+ drop and shortly before the pandemic began.
After months of the parks being closed, Disney had to make up their revenue. Since The Owl House was the odd one out, wasn't super popular (Grom had yet to air), and not too far into production on Seasons 2 and 3 it drew the short straw.
Matt's alluded that Amphibia took a budget hit as well although not as extensive as Season 3 had been in the works for a while.
The Owl House was fated to end at Season 3 given the Disney Channel pattern. Covid just expedited the process.

    • @maem7462
      @maem7462 3 роки тому +24

True Disney probably would have ended the show after the 3rd season. Once they get past 3 seasons Disney has to pay more. That’s why Suite Life Of Zack and Cody got changed to Suite Life On Deck. It would have been great if they let The Owl House have a full season 3 because that possibly could be the amount of the story the creators needed to finish the show. At the very least they should have waited until Season 2A was released before making the decision

@@maem7462 Unfortunately as I wish as a fan of the show yet considered possible factors of the animation process and Disney Channel current and past finical situations I don't think this one "higher up" at the Disney Channel had the luxury of time to make that choice.
The process of making an animated show, how DuckTales 2017 (a scripted Disney XD series but important for research) financially preformed, and greatly the fall of cable channels which this higher up working & responsibilities for the Disney Channel primarily must make choices and time to do so. Note this is "Disney Channel" vs "Disney" overall as this Higher up works for Disney Channel vs Disney+ which has it's own branding differences, situations, scripted series advantages, budget, and preexisting contracts that can process in the thinking and choices.
I love animation and I was happy to have a meeting with Disney TVA people where they explained some interesting matters and how a animated show is made plus it's timely process.
It takes a full year - year and a half to make 1 episode. The process takes time and requires alot of people working as a team and functional. Grom didn't show yet to us the viewers + we know the show when "green lit" in the past different factors might of been at play. The show was green lit for 2 seasons (DuckTales, Amphibia, and Owl House all had 2 seasons green lit package maybe advertising a show of faith to viewers of how at the time the higher ups felt they could of been successful but things changed) and the 2nd was being made and possibly was wrapping up before Grom.
A higher up MUST make a choice for a season 3 of a animated show before the process begins and that process usally starts possibly even during season 1 finale or season 2 very begining otherwise so much time between seasons where a fanbase might drift off can happen.
Plus importantly you have to take into account the team itself making the show. They need jobs thus they NEED to know if they have a job working on season 3 now or applying to other studios or projects. To hold that information off is putting animators from knowing if they still have a paycheck or looking for other work. You are asking for their time and they have bills to pay.
So a big question was when was truly the latest deadline for this important choice, what non subjective and subjective matters was considered (art, story, and branding is subjective as 2 higher ups can look at things and have different views but non-subjective matters such as financial outcomes and maximum budget and pre-existing contacts are not). How far back can the process for production starting with writing for season 3 can be pushed back before you hurt animation teams needing a job for pay?
Disney Channel for scripted series currently isn't a prime or best for any scripted series and DuckTales impacted the Disney Channel desision makers on this matters. Disney+ is however where scripted series can shine and doesn't have the same limits and costs for cable channels but Disney+ wasn't a big factor back then and Disney+ probably spent their starting budget on series green lit and marketing for a bit of a gamble and new territory.
I'm now hoping for the Owl House franchise with strong proven numbers on Disney+ Dana and others might be able to have Spin-offs or other series ideas they might have be green lit as Disney+ series if scripted and older audiences while Disney Channel currently focuses on Storyboarded series like Big City Greens that has been a success for them thus far & younger demographics.

That show was also serialized and had some dark moments at times, and was also cut short by the third season. This is why I get a little frustrated when people say that the owl house was “cancelled”
      Because it wasn’t
Yes it wasn’t what Dana wanted but in the end she’s still going to be allowed to write an ending to the story she is telling, there’s a lot of other cartoons out there that never got that opportunity because they got prematurely cancelled by their studios and their stories never got fully told
      The original Teen Titans
      Transformers Animated
      Acceleracers
      Sonic SATAM
      And many others
All those shows never got to tell the endings of their stories and many threads were left unresolved

@José Lucas dwelling on how much it sucks isn't gonna make it any better. Considering the treatment similar cartoons get when they aren't up to the studio's brand, owl house got off lucky. You also have to take into account Dana had to fight tooth and nail to get even the season 3 specials.
Right now the best we can do is hope for more spin off content, which given the absolute *stupid* amount of times the owl house gets trending, is a very, very real possibility. Disney aren't total idiots. And even if that doesn't happen, at the very *very* least we'll get an ending, more than most shows like this end up getting, just like robosonic said. And given the fact they're writing season 2B to account for it, and season 3 is already in production, odds are they've already figured it out.

    • @ItsRebeccaRose

Actually production on S2B episodes were likely being made in the beginning of 2020 since the show was already picked up for a second season prior to the first episode of the show, A Lying Witch and A Warden, premiered in January 2020. I know in a Reddit AMA, Dana said that the entire first season was written before the first episode premiered. So I am assuming the same is true for season two with all of it being written before the first episode of season two airing. Meaning, that Disney likely didn’t tell Dana about their decision until ALL of season two was already written. So unfortunately, there will likely be some condensed plot threads for season three.

Adults were the ones with money and so the content reflected adult entertainment which is why they are timeless. Animation oriented for children is new age and there are alot more restrictions cuz of it. In regard to Dana Terrace, I would hope this folly will encourage her to visit adult streaming/channel options considering how she originally wanted the tone of the Owl House to be darker. Hell, when I was little I used to constantly watch reruns of ATLA. And those sure as hell weren't even close in order, like one episode would be Aang starting his waterbending training, and then next would be Katara bloodbending.
Because I was a kid I didn't give a fuck. I didn't care about the sudden development, I cared that the show itself was enjoyable. I don't understand how Disney can't grasp the concept that kids, especially little kids don't really care about continuity.

Then I think back to other shows they could be “not Disney related” and I could only think about Gargoyles cus if someone didn’t knew about that show and just saw it then they wouldn’t think it was from Disney.
Then again that is an old show back in the 90s and I don’t think they really had a “only Disney taste” vision back then and just experimented a little. If anything I thought it was mainly because of the production and with the whole COVID situation. So then why not continue it through Disney+. Idk. I will say that it is in the best interest of both Dana and the executives at Disney to not explicitly say whether LGBTQ themes played a role in it being cut short - even if Dana would have stated this had this been the case (consequences aside) that might be why no one explicitly told her whether it was a factor or pointed to other things when that idea was brought up. I'm sure the darkness and serialized nature was a big factor, but you can't (and shouldn't) rule out the generally (and unfounded) attitude that lgbtq themes in child programming is "too adult" as a possible contributing factor - that could easily have been the "straw that broke the camel's back" for why it was seen as "less suited" to the young audience of the Disney channel, though obviously there are other more credible factors.
The serialized nature is a big deal, too, that why I didn't watch Avatar when it first came out, I kept getting into the story at crucial plot points and feeling lost

Disney’s making a mistake axing their most respectable currently airing show. Amphibia is fine and I love Big City Greens, but the owl house is special in such a way that really I can only compare to GF, P&F and KP. Since those were also highlights on DC throughout their run

I get that the parks took a big hit during Covid and everyone had to tighten the budget, but that's still not a good reason to axe your arguably most popular show over all of them. Amphibia is on its way out, so it's safe. DuckTales is coming to an end and the Ghost and Molly McGhee just started to of course they were all safe, but it didn't even need to be an animated property that got hit. One of their live action shows could've been cut. There are plenty that could've ended already.
If it's more suited for ongoing and action stories, they could've slid it to Disney XD like GF or made it a Disney Plus Original. Cancelling it out right, no matter how you look at it feels targeted. None of their shows has as much heat on it as the Owl House. It's banned in multiple countries and censored in others. Yeah it's not as episodic, but they say that like they can't rerun first season episodes on the network if they want. They already figure kids wouldn't notice anyway, so why not?
And why wouldn't kids like a cartoon with a story they can get into and become a fan of? We live in the day and age where kids know who not only Iron Man, Captain America and Thor are but Thanos, Loki, and the Infinity Stones. The MCU has very much proven people in general are willing to follow serialized, including kids. And those are movies. Cartoons made for children is just its own league. Yeah they fought an uphill battle and they practically won until some loser decided to change the rules.
Honestly to me, the Disney brand just sounds like it's supposed equivalent of chicken nuggets. Something any and everyone of any age can and should be able to enjoy, but always being served specifically to children because they think that's all kids like. I get that they're a company trying to make money but didn't Walt Disney himself say “You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.”
I'm just saying, there were many other routes that could've been taken here and the fact that they basically used this as an opportunity to just get The Owl House off the network without an actual clear answer beyond "the brand" reeks of prejudice. Hopefully Netflix picks them up after, but for now. I'm streaming every episode

Copy pasta you've seen a million times about the Third season of The Owl House
The Owl House has been renewed for a shortened 3rd season. We want at least another full season length, or any form of compensation!! Dana posted on Twitter that we will be getting a short season containing just 3 special length episodes; the equivalent of 6 normal episodes. It is confirmed that this will be the last season. This was NOT Dana's choice; she had been hoping for a normal 10-20 episode pickup, and not expecting a cancellation. The possibility of a potential season 4 pick-up whenever buget won't be restrained due to COVID-19 was never considered at all by the Disney higher-ups.
Dana tweeted that if we want to see the show continue, TOH merch, or anything else TOH related, snail mail is the way to go. Disney still reads and responds to snail mail. This is an effective way of contacting them. They don't appear to read DMs and emails, presumably due to 1) the sheer number they receive, and 2) the fact that people mailing letters are statistically over 18 and therefore able to earn and spend money (like on, say, cable subscriptions or merch). Watching the show on Disney+ or signing this petition might be effective as well. I admit it's hard of me to think of the Disney brand and not think the lgbtq+ rep had absolutely nothing to do with that. A few weeks prior to the show runner for New Warriors, a show that only had the pilot shot, had a similar story of 1 Disney exec shutting it down and that show runner did say it was due to it being too gay. Of course I also think Dana is being truthful here so yea I got to take her word for it even if a part of me wants to argue against that so hard. It's also just so weird to me that 1 person bad the power to destroy these shows. That feels like a power structure that is only going let the most boring things that please everyone through. (And I really hope I don;t come off as someone refusing the video or Dana's post, just tried to explain that it's a knee jerk reaction to Disney based on a long and recent history from the company).

This was the same day that the season premiered on television on the Disney Junior channel. It's sad that Owl House and most of the other Disney shows (e.g. Amphibia, DuckTales) ended after 3 Seasons which is a result of corporate/network meandering, or by the creator's own decision on wanting to tell a completed story (e.g Amphibia, Tangled the Series, DuckTales 2017), mainly the former.
And although some are satisfied with certain shows ending at Season 3 due to the creators wanting to tell the story they wanted to (I'm one of those people) others are disappointed that they want to see more of the show and It's worldbuilding be resolved leading to their suspicions and theories that Season 3 (albeit shortened) of _The Owl House_ being the final season was due to pressure by Disney and Disney Television Animation to end it early which several creators who worked at Disney TVA including Dana Terrace confirmed on Twitter, Reddit or certain podcasts and Owl House was one of those Disney shows that suffered Disney's treatment compared to the other series that ended their runs at Season 3 (e.g. Amphibia, DuckTales 2017).

Some part of Belos at the end of season 2 must have made its way to Disney headquartes and posses minds of executives because this whole situation is absurd. 12:00 It sounds kind of like what happened with DuckTales (2017). The show originated on Disney XD in 2017, joined the Disney Channel in 2018 where it ran up until the Season 2 finale and I guess this show didn't fit the "Disney Brand" anymore. So, it was pushed back to only be on Disney XD for Season 3 where it unfortunately ended.
