I would personally have put Naked a couple spots higher - it's a solid album with some great songs, but even the worst Talking Heads is still, like, a 7 / 10.
More Songs About Buildings And Food is extraordinarily underrated to me. It's like doing a mystery drug in the bathroom of a Karaoke bar some weird guy gets up there and starts wailing and refuses to leave, and you start panicking when you feel the drugs come on but you gain the wherewithal to buckle in and enjoy it. The transition from Thank You For Sending Me An Angel to With Our Love is absolutely electric, it's one of the best one-two punches I've heard from the opening of an album. The album is weird, quirky, punky, not over-indulgent, but has enough cool production that it starts to feel like a lucid dream. At the end between Take Me To The River and Big Country you suddenly realize that the weirdo doing karaoke is up there crushing some country songs and the whole bar is singing along.

I think you're missing an important aspect of understanding Byrne's lyricism and personality. You're interpreting him as being sociopathic instead of what he actually is, which is autistic. He's confirmed this fact in interviews and as someone with autism, it's more obvious to me with how relatable his songs are. Take No Compassion, for instance. He says "Other people's problems, they overwhelm my mind/They say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time". What he's saying, in a very frustrated, meltdowny type of way, is that he's overly empathetic and thus has to avoid helping people with their issue's because he doesn't have the energy, interest, or ability to truly help. He even adds some sugar coating with the line "It's not a matter of your personality or style". He's not struggling to empathize as you claim here. He cares, but only to the extent his mental health will allow him to. He's tired of helping other people out with nothing in return. I hope someone sees this, because this information is pretty important to understanding these songs

I almost completely agree with your ranking of the albums, but I have some unpopular opinions on some of their music. Honestly I feel that Psycho Killer, Take Me to the River, and Once in a Lifetime are not the best songs on their corresponding albums, but New Feeling, Found a Job, and Born Under Punches. Especially Born Under Punches, I mean, that’s actually probably my favorite Talking Heads song in general. I also like Houses in Motion and The Great Curve above Once in a Lifetime. As for Speaking in Tongues, I would agree that This Must Be The Place is the best song, though Girlfriend is Better is a close second.
“Remain in Light” was life-changing for me. I remember feeling disappointed by “Speaking in Tongues” because the tracks didn’t match that epic weight. I thought that the “Tongues” material only came to life when they played it live with that amazing band.
That's a pretty fair look at Talking Heads. Sure, some quibbles inevitably, but overall, good shot. But... but.... you didn't mention the humour. Byrne is not just angsty, he is incredibly funny but you've got to have a sense of irony or you'll miss it entirely. You only have to look at his dances and movements to see that he is highly comic. Thus TH songs stop being "creepy" and instead become hilarious. The secret is all in The Big Country where Byrne expresses his disconnect from middle America - a land where there is no sense of irony. My view is that there is no understanding of Talking Heads without seeing their work through the prism of humour. Thus this video can't rate more than B+. You also have to see the ironic distance between the songwriter (Byrne) and the characters in the songs viz Pyscho Killer. They are not one and the same.
I feel like what you're bringing up here is the other side of the performative tightrope that David Byrne's songwriting walks effortlessly. Depends entirely on what frame of mind the listener is in when engaging with the works. From one listen to the next, you could be laughing your ass off, but then deeply unsettled. I find it kinda hits in a similar fashion to Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, of all things.
"Fear of Music" is my personal favorite. "Remain of Light" is a close second, but I always thought that its second side was a bit inconsistent. "Fear of Music" is pure fire from start to finish.
Cant agree. Animals and Electric Guitar are duds. Remain in Lights second side (while not everyones cup of tea) had something completely different to offer than the a side, which I thought was cool :-)
I love _True Stories._ If you haven't seen the movie _True Stories,_ then you probably won't really get what the album is about and why it is what it is. That may be a setback for it, but it's really endearing to me. At the same time, within the over all discography, I can't argue with putting it where you did.
I listened to the album before the movie and honestly I think it was just as exciting to watch since I'm insane and remembered every track name so when a song was starting I would tell my boyfriend the name of it and I also did the same with Stop Making Sense. But anyways, True Stories is sooooo good both album and movie soooooooo yummy and delicious.

I can’t object to Buildings and Food being ranked lower than Fear of Music or Speaking in Tongues or 77 or Remain in Light because I’m also obsessed with FoM and SiT, and Remain in Light and ‘77 are amazing of course, but I’m really into Buildings and Food. I think it’s a perfect showcase of, as you said, Byrne’s fixations and social awkwardness. The Good Thing, Warning Sign, Found a Job and Big Country are a few faves of mine. They’re not groovy, but they are very tense and strange, for me, emotive and frantic. The neurotic anxiety that can be heard is something I really enjoy. Still tho, i agree all over with this ranking.

I think Pink Floyd would be a great choice for a Worst to Best feature. They have two records that are considered among the best albums ever (The Wall + Dark Side of the Moon), an interesting early psychedelic period with Syd Barrett, and the kind of highs and lows that would make ranking their discography interesting. Same with Led Zeppelin. And I'll echo whoever said Swans.
I'm a huge PF fan, but The Wall I almost never listen to. Do I really want to listen to a Roger Waters Gilbert and Sullivan operetta? No. It's doomy and depressing and the ideas are reasonably basic. Not a patch on nearly all the albums that preceded it. Wish You Were Here is the one I can listen to over and over, but I think my next purchase will be More which has been chronically overlooked. It's one of the very few I don't already have.
The live album "The name of the band is Talking Heads" is by far their best. The energy in their live performances lift the already great tracks to even greater heights. Stop making sense is also good but Name of the band is so much better.
Way too long and way too much shit. Dude should have written screenplays, honestly. His dialogue is hilariously out of touch in more than half his work.
Travis scott and juice wrld references in the intro of a vid ranking Talking Heads albums, I imagine the venn diagram overlap of fans of these artists is as wide as myself
I still remember getting into Talking Heads very early in 2020, listening all morning long to the three Eno produced records while working on paintings for my art portfolio, there really was an intangible vibe to it, kinda miss it
I don’t know about all of y’all but I really like 12 Golden country greats the songs themselves and the topics are the most diverse and funniest the band has ever made and the country twang guitar sound really good but I’m not dumb my favorite is Chocolate and Chesse
I cannot get past the production on that album. Brian Eno was such a better producer for them. The production also really helped make it less memorable for me. Either that or I’ve just not been focusing. I’ll just have to give it more times.

I recently got into the band when I listened to Speaking in tongues for the first time during my first acid trip. Completely changed my view of music. I love all the small details in the background of the songs.
I personally would put Speaking in Tongues in the number one slot. It is perfectly sequenced, where I feel that Remain in Light (even though it’s the one that everyone says is their best) has some issues with maintaining momentum. Speaking in Tongues is a record of bangers, and I can’t help but dance when I hear any single one of those tracks.
Interesting channel and good on you for championing one of the most influential bands of the 70’s and 80’s. Your critique of their lesser albums is an example of how in the 90’s we traded ambition in content for a focus on production and “pitchforking” everything. Artists and albums had relative careers where they made records in context. If they had thought that way, they wouldn’t have, or any other artists or music in general, would be furniture. I’ll watch your additional video (obv you’re a sincere fan) on them and hopefully, in the interest of introducing great music to fans, include the context of the time. I’d probably agree with your list, but listening in chrono, would be highly rewarding to “experience”!the evolution and appreciation. 👍🏽
The song, "I Zimbra" is actually pronounced "ee zimbra". But I agree with the rankings and I also noticed just how different they sounded on "Naked". "Remain In Light" is definitely their best album. This was a great video. 👍🏻😎
Ruple Thaker I’m guessing the link is that LCD soundsystem must worship Remain in light at an alter as that album’s sound is copied often. No surprise really, what a brilliant album it is.
liquidpebbles yeah but I'm much more curious in what he thinks of Quebec, which is in my opinion their best album. It'd be cool to hear him review the mollusk too, of course.
I gotta give credit to Fear of Music. It was the first Talking Heads album I listened to. What’s more, this is the album that got me into Talking Heads, and for that, I hold Fear of Music close to me alongside Remain in Light.
Naked is an awesome album!! Man! Mr. Jones, The Democratic Circus, Blind!! Damn what a great song and an even greater video! And Cool Water. That one ranks up there with their best in my opinion. I was waiting for you to say, "I don't dislike any of their albums. But Naked just happens to be the one I don't listen to very much," or something. They're a great live band. But I don't think I would ever suggest someone get a live album as an introduction. Stop Making Sense is a fantastic film. And it does have some really banging versions on it. Girlfriend is Better and Life During Wartime are both far better than their respective album versions, in my opinion. And who can argue with the absolutely iconic opening of the show with the taped drum machine beat and acoustic guitar version of Psycho Killer? But the best songs in that set list are some of the least impressive versions of those songs. Crosseyed and Painless is basically unplayable live. I mean if they got Eno on stage with them, maybe. If I was in a band and a song we were trying to work up for live performance came off that ho-hum, I wouldn't want to play it. They have loads of other songs that they do damn fine live versions of. For instance, the bonus songs on the DVD, Cities and Big Business/I Zimbra, are both damn fine live versions of those tracks. But they were not included in the original release even though in comparison to a fair portion of the songs that did make it, they glowed white-hot. Don't get me wrong. Like I said, it's a damn fine FILM. The organization of the show in terms of how the group was slowly built up on stage from song to song is a prime example of how a simple creative concept can do so much for the perception of an audience and their emotional response to a show. And the, shal we say dances, that Byrne employed like stumbling and running in place, and all around the stage as well, for an entire song, were and still are brilliant visuals. And those visuals go so much deeper into the psyche of those who want to look that far. It's just the actual musical performance on Slippery People, Burning Down The House (what a disappointment), Swamp, Crosseyed and Painless, and even on Once In A Lifetime, that leaves me cold. And one last little point on Stop Making Sense, why does every single internet connected jukebox have to have ONLY that album by the band? No Sand In The Vaseline? No LIttle Creatures? That album sold about as well as Stop Making Sense. Blah blah blah. Bitch bitch bitch. Moan moan moan. Somebody call the whambulance.... Talking Heads is/was a phenomenal band. Their live shows were definitely events and not just people playing some songs. And for my money, that puts them right up there as one of the best live acts overall. But it's the concepts and the movements of Byrne that ultimately put them in that category for me at least. But as a recording group, there is simply no other band that can surpass them. I don't mean they are better than every other recording artist. But they are at least as good as anyone else. And that collection of albums is, to me, a national treasure.
it or the first clash album probably actually are though, sandinista is surely overstuffed and maybe tryhard dubby but fuck it it's a weird ride and i love it
I think your analysis of Fear of Music is spot on. For me, it was my favorite Talking Heads record for years. It's like you said, the band took music as a vessel to explore fear, neurotic tendencies, and irrationality. When I first heard it, the record blew my mind. It was paranoid (Air), gritty (Memories Can't Wait), lighthearted (Paper), virtuosic (I Zimbra), and sonically insane (Drugs...gosh, what an atmosphere). Nowadays, Remain in Light takes the cake. But I'll never forget my introduction to this eclectic blend of perfect elements. It was my first Talking Heads record, and simply put, the most intriguing listen in my entire life.

Especially Side A of _Remain In Light._ 4 perfect songs in succession.
Absolutely agree. Speaking in Tongues was a let-down and too commercial after masterpieces like Remain in Light and Fear of Music

Donald Trump Hey DJ
They are not one and the same.
so what you're saying is: light 7?
I feel like what you're bringing up here is the other side of the performative tightrope that David Byrne's songwriting walks effortlessly. Depends entirely on what frame of mind the listener is in when engaging with the works. From one listen to the next, you could be laughing your ass off, but then deeply unsettled. I find it kinda hits in a similar fashion to Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, of all things.
This comment irradiates Rick n Morty fan energy

"Fear of Music" is my personal favorite. "Remain of Light" is a close second, but I always thought that its second side was a bit inconsistent. "Fear of Music" is pure fire from start to finish.
Cant agree. Animals and Electric Guitar are duds. Remain in Lights second side (while not everyones cup of tea) had something completely different to offer than the a side, which I thought was cool :-)

Don't tell Floyd fans that Dark Side and The Wall are their best, they're going to tear you apart.
The Wall is really overrated. Worst to Animals
I love The Wall but haven't given it a complete listen in years. Find myself returning to their shorter albums more often.
Dark side of the moon got me into werid psychedelic stuff like Shpongle and I'm glad it did
I'm a huge PF fan, but The Wall I almost never listen to.

The Beatles?
I love the way he started this list a little bit angry and ended so excited about the last two
