    Here are my thoughts on it.
    I would say no he's just very prideful.
    The difference being that you talk about what you did fondly and with a sense of accomplishment and honor and pride.
    Narcissism you talk about your self again and again with no care about others and what they have done and think nothing they ever have or can do will do anything better then you with no prof of such ideals.
    Maui has shown he cares about Moana and thinks in smaller ways at first that she is capable and is impressed by her sometimes and even shows humility which Narcissist's never do.
    Respect and keep up the epic work.

    For most antiheroes they show moments of narcissism but wholesome actions sure they might believe there prideful, egotistical and selfishness
    But at the time when hit rock bottom they have to learn from their trama or a life lesson to understand everything is not giving you a gift and praise

    I think he's more like abuela alma where his intentions were good, and he didn't see what he was doing as malicious until it was too late. Then of course like alma he actually reflects what he did.
    gothel on the other hand knew what she was doing, has all the symptoms of npd, and had no remorse. which is why she sort of dies at the end instead of doing any sort of reflecting.

      That's an interesting idea that I didn't consider before. DID Maui reflect on his actions and realize he messed up? And would he have returned the heart on his own if he had a boat/the heart? At the point where Moana finds him, Maui seems shocked that no one likes him, yet he steals Moana's canoe and leaves her to die, so how much could he really care about people?

    Maui is 100% a narcissist. It makes sense he would end up like that though. I think it makes a lot of sense he'd end up that way. I know it's not Disney, but I'd love to see a video like this about White Diamond! ✨

    • @TheFangirlWatches

      I wish we had more with White Diamond! She is so fascinating! And she seems very different in Future too. I'm not quite sure if that's full on narcissistic personality disorder that she demonstrates, but there's definitely a superiority complex. But why? Was she the first gem to have ever existed? What caused her attitude..?

    The entire point of the movie is her starts off prideful and narcissistic but at the end of the movie he gives up his power and thus begans a redemption

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  2 роки тому +2

      He never really gives up his powers though. He's willing to destroy his hook, but he doesn't know that's the for sure outcome. He's also acting in the interest of making humans love him again, not of any real change of heart. So, I'm not really sure that he does redeem himself. Even while in the hands of Te Fiti, Moana is bowing and Maui looks at her like "wtf are you doing?" His mindset and physical behaviors don't change until he's given a new hook.

  • @Ladya-eg7yp

    Hmm...Idk. I think maybe he's a Anti Hero..but it's your view point. Especially since he was abandoned as a baby by his parents and he truly changed for the better since he cares about Moana now instead of just his powers. Again it's your observations. Not judging promise 🥺

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  2 роки тому

      Maui is definitely an anti-hero character in the terms of the story, but, whether or not his narcissistic tendencies have changed long term is debatable by the end of the film. He is being given everything he wants with no one challenging him - we only see Maui's truest colors when there's some kind of opposition.

  • @Kchan250
    @Kchan250 2 роки тому +2

    Oof, I honestly just thought Maui was just like an overgrown kid. Emotionally and logically irrational , self important because he wasn’t taught any better (I mean, he got powers when he was a discarded baby and got all the praise for it) and end game motive is to get love and attention. He didn’t have anyone to guide and raise him, so everything about him I think is stunted and indeed could be changed. However, I always like your analysis and I’m totally open to the idea that he is in-fact a narcissistic anti hero.

  • @90Kirame
    @90Kirame 2 роки тому +1

    I believe the thing that kind of busts this theory is the fact that after restoring Te Fiti's heart a REAL narcissist would have taken ALL the credit for the rescue mission. While the reason Maui agreed to help Moana was to gain more praise from people and to be seen as a hero again, he doesn't really go back to the humans like "Ohh look at me, I did this all for you, I taught this girl to sail, aren't I awesome??" THAT'S what a narcissist would have done.
    A narcissistic person would NEVER allow anyone to take credit for the work they'd been involved in, but in the end Maui takes off and lets Moana be the hero. He even REFUSES Moana's offer to come along with her and be the hero of her tribe, but Maui turns down the offer and says Moana is enough for her tribe.
    That ending is the ultimate proof that Maui isn't really a narcissist and I'm surprised you left the entire ending out. Narcissist people also never apologize for their actions, at least genuinely, and I very much doubt Te Fiti would have given him a new hook if he'd not been apologizing from the bottom of his heart.

  • @Nightman221k
    @Nightman221k 2 роки тому +2

    Depending on how much of his ego being a defense mechanism is an act and how much is him believing he's always right and amazing, he probably is a narcissist to at least some degree since he doesn't really seem as concerned with helping for helping's sake as opposed to doing it out of a desire to feel validated. I mean, in your Alma video I didn't think she was a genuine narcissist because she was fully capable of admitting her fault, taking the full blame; rather than shifting the blame to anyone else. With Maui I don't really think he was that invested in the damage he did to Te Fiti since it was to him just a fun adventure that resulted in a cool monster to fight. He seems like a childish kid rather than a functional adult really.

    I'm a moari boy and maui is an asshole half the time in his ledgends. The other half he's actually a really good guy.
    Story's he's an ass in
    1. Tricking his grandmother into giving him her jawbone which became his fish hook and weapon.
    2. Turning his wife into a dog because he was bored.
    3. Almost destroying fire forever because he wanted to be God of fire by tricking the goddess of fire into giving up the source of her power. (Her 5 figure nails) however this pissed her off because he destroyed 4 out of 5 of them. She burned everything around her so he cried to the gods who made it rain killing her, so she hid her last fingernail in the trees to protect it.
    4 beating up the sun because he wouldn't stay in the sky long enough which almost killed him so he crawls but caused another problem. Days became too long so he tied the moon and sun together which lead to day and night cycle. Aka making the moon drag the sun a little faster.
    His karma. The goddess of death crushed him with her thighs after he tried to enter her womb while she was asleep to make everyone immortal. The fan tail laughed and woke her up. This killed him but started the cycle of life and death.
    The good he did.
    1. Fished up the north island of New Zealand. It was meant to feed his people but his brothers didn't listen to him as he was talking to the gods to preserve it. They started choping at it and it turned into an island and every part they hacked off turned into an island also.
    2. Didn't kill his mother out of revenge when he met her after growing up as she had thrown him into the ocean as a baby. Instead he showed her he was worthy of being her son. And met his father in the underworld.
    3. The coconut thing I'm not sure about 🤷‍♂️
    In mythology he's not narcissistic just an asshole who was cunning af

    Personally, I want to believe that scene with Maui's backstory was legit. That was a buetifully touching scene and shows the actual mythology behind Maui's story. Plus, Maui seemed generally sad and depressed as he told Moana his tragic past. This was by far my favorite scene in the entire movie and I want to believe it was real.
    That being said, this was a great video and a wonderfully constructed argument you presented.
    I also agree that - while to some degree - it is wrong to make children think narcissists (or people in general for that matter) can change, it does make a better story if there is some character development as is the case with Maui.
