In this video, I will show you how to answer the questions “what’s your greatest weakness during an interview”.
It's important to respond carefully because you don't want the hiring manager to think that you're making stuff up. But mostly, you must mention weaknesses that aren't critical for the job.
3 Steps To Answering The Weakness Question:
Step #1:
Be Authentic - These people are rare - it takes courage and self-confidence to be who you really are. Be genuine and worthy of belief. You need to be a person who is completely honest and show trustworthiness during the interview.
Step #2:
Identify a TRUE weakness. Not trying to turn a negative into a positive by sharing a supposed weakness that is actually a desirable quality in an employee.
Step #3:
Myth Buster - Demonstrating That You Are Working on Your Weakness. You are to work on your strengths and manage around your weaknesses.
By watching this video, you will learn to:
• Make it your mission to find out what you don’t like doing and stop doing it
• Do not ever interview for a job that concentrates on your weaknesses as part of the job requirements
• Tell the hiring manager what is YOUR greatest weakness really is.

This is a really hard question to answer honestly when you're sitting across from someone who you believe is looking for a way to weed you out.
Hey Dydreth, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate more than you know. And yes, you are correct, that's why you need to practice, practice and practice some more before the interview.
I think whenever an interviewer asks what your weakness is, they are looking for a disqualifier to make it easy for them...they already don't want you
My honest response would be "I have a hard time telling friends, family and co workers NO." That's not something I read about a positive to a negative. Im the first to volunteer to "Help" it drives my man crazy. He always says, "couldnt you just say no." Im the one who volunteers to help everyone even if I have to put something i need to do off. Is that a bad thing to admit in a interview? I hate answering that question it's super awkward. Id rather be asked what I weigh.
Right.... Especially the end - answering the question Why Should I Hire You.. Seriously?..
Darnell, great videos and thank you for your help with interviewing! I love how your approach is inspiring and very motivational!
Seeing yr videos has been and still is a GREAT help, thks again Darnell!
My weakness is I haven't learned to say NO. if you hire me, I promise to work on my weakness. Can you do overtime? Nah.
Hey Len, thanks for your comments, I really appreciate them. And saying "no" is NOT a weakness. Give a TRUE weakness and tell them why it's a weakness and show them how you are working on it to improve your situation.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@DarnellClarke Hi Darnell Clarke, I think that not being able to say no actually is a weakness. It's my weakness. If you're trying to please everyone by saying yes to everything, even though you actually don't have enough time/capacity to do what they ask, that's a weakness. It's better to clearly and honestly communicate your capacity limits, even if you may have to disappoint someone.
Darnell, I really appreciate what you’re doing. Empowering a person with advice for a better chance at winning. I’m going for a job interview with Bank of America with a chance to have a successful job making a minimum of $60,000 a year. I needed these tips because I’m 32 yrs old and have thrown a lot of my life away on dead end jobs that would hire anybody. Now it’s my time to shine and actually have to impress a hiring manager even though I have no college education or certification in any field. Wish me luck because I need this job more than I ever needed a job. 3 kids and my woman. WE need this job. I need to kill this interview and I’m going to apply the knowledge u have shared
How did you do on the job interview?
Darnell, I enjoyed your tips and the passion in which you coach. I encourage you to continue to reach out and encourage others and let nothing silence you. Let your critics fuel even more passion in your coaching, and allow this to be a sign that you're doing exceptionally well. Critic theives attempt to rob and only go after where the good stuff is.
Hello Carmen, thank you for your words of encouragement. I really appreciate more than you know!!!! Again, thanks.
Darnell you are spot on I took your interview tips and I got the job basically on the spot they seemed impressed, a major key is what you said be confident. It arrogant. Also don’t seem to eager just relax and let it flow.
Hi sir.. thank you for the information i love it.. i'm not just watched your video, i download it so that i can review even i dont have internet.. thank you and Gob bless

True build on your strengths but you can certainly answer how you manage your weaknesses
Yigang, yes can certainly answer how you manage your weaknesses... For sure! Thanks for your feedback!
Boom! Best tutorial on this interview question.
Hey Keisha, thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it more than you know!

Hi Darnell, I had to fulfil an English online test (the requirement was high level), took me almost an hour but I got there... with 323/400, so around 80%
What if I struggled with public speaking
Hello Darnell, I have a question related to the greatest weakness question, can food be a good weakness to use? It has nothing to do with my upcoming job position interview and it's something I think most can relate to.
Hey Mr. Answer Man! I struggle so much with interviews! I am trying to prepare the best I can with questions and answers the one thing that I think always gets me down is I’m not a real enthusiast and cheerful bubbly person and I always get told that is what the employer is looking for. I try my hardest to be upbeat and bubbly but I feel like it comes off fake! Any advice?
Hello Darn. Thank you for your priceless service.
My greatest weakness is that of communication. .. I don't articulate well but I can express myself better in writing and I just applied for a managerial job pending an interview... still trying to put myself together. Help me please.
Thank you!
Hey, my friend, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know. What exactly do you need help with?
"I care too much about my job." lol
Hello, thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know! 🙂 And that is NOT a weakness!!!
Your feedback is appreciated...I watched maybe 10 video while grocery shopping and while checking out, with the sound up. You may have influenced an entire grocery store. ; )
You are doing a fantastic service to the world community. My interview today is in the EMR field here in SC as an application coordinator...new territory, but my 10 solid years as a consultant supports "the challenge."
Enough said...back to prep and until next time. Thanks!
The Race Analyst, PHD, thank you for your feedback and letting everyone listen at your grocery store, outstanding!!!
Hey Darnell, your website doesnt seem to be working.... great advice.... interview in the morning...... wish me luck
Did you pass your interview?
everyone is different. there are many other HR's telling you to say something different then what is being said here. Just have to be yourself and the stars need to align that you are sitting across from someone who likes what you just said.
Hey, my friend, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know.
Hello Darnell? What if you are asked what are your Limitations? I'm a tech support analyst.
Ive watched so many vids re this question and this is the first time I encounter such a unique answer as this. Btw is the website is working?
Sadly, Darnell has passed away in 2019
Hi Darnell, really helpful video thank you! Would it be a weakness to not be able to start on something new as long as the current projects are not done? For example (kinda stupid ex.) When I eat something and let's I eat some fries, then I won't start eating my burger until my fries are done, or I have more than one assignment to write, but I will finish one before starting with another. I'm not sure if it would be a weakness or a strength or not even useful😆, Thank you
Hello, thanks for your feedback and question. As for your hamburger and fries example... HILARIOUS!!! 😂🤓And NO that is NOT a weakness.
Correct me if I'm misunderstanding all this but a lot of this advice revolve around white collar positions. Will this work with if you're applying for blue collar positions?
My weakness is this : I'm a down to earth humble person who does not like to boast I like to let my actions speak for me because I believe that actions speak louder than words.
but in reality sometimes in the work place the great things I do go unseen compared to the other Co workers who always boast about what they have done. So that is my weakness.
Tell me if you think if it's a good one.
Hey, My Friend, thank you for your "outstanding" feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know. Yes, this is a good weakness. So, what are you doing about it????
Think you did not understand what was said. You are trying to turn things around in your benefit. Being authentic. Means well, it takes me a while to get trust with others or I lose pens and keys everyday.
@@zorunio - Ok, I understand...
Shepherd warrior: Good one.
Isn't your sidekick Blankman? 🤣
I’m trying to go back to work after stepping out of working for a year. I’m having a hard time getting interviews even though I had huge successes in my 13 year career with my company that I worked for. Any suggestions?
man i used your videos, very informative. if i get this job, its credit to you brother. thanks
Hey my friend... again! Keep watching the best is still yet to come. 👍
Hi Darnell, This was helpful to me. I have a job interview tomorrow. You helped me think more about how to answer this question by using your example of not being very detail oriented. I am very detail oriented and would never want to have to handle Big Budget planning or Managing large groups of people. The job I am applying for is office help, so that is nowhere on the qualifications :-) thanks goodness, LOL Blessings
Hello, thank you for your comments and good luck on your interview. Please let me know the outcome...
Hi Darnell, I did not get the job. BUT am better prepared, thanks to you. Also, probably a big part of me not getting the job, is I am now 70. I don't look or feel it, but, still........ I need/have to work. I Currently have a PT Office Manager Position so am ok. I wish I would have had your tips when I was younger, though. Knowledge is power. Sending you Blessings and Gratitude
Hey Lady, I'm sorry you didn't get that job. A better one is on its way. And so what you are 70, you keep moving forward; life only rewards those who keep's running to the end!
Creative Lady
I'm interviewing tomorrow and like yourself, Darnell made me realize a weakness. I'm not a ppl leader. I lead projects and will work with ppl. I take no responsibilities on their pathways. I've had enough poorly influence mine and wouldn't want that dark cloud on me.
Hi Darnell! I have another interview tomorrow morning. A friend of mine's daughter works there and they have a 5 star review from staff, which is unusual. LOL . The original position is Full time, which is not what I want, they called me today and offered me PT. THAT"S never happened before, LOL.....
I have Hope and even if I don't get this, I keep moving forward. This or something better is my motto. It is not a weakness. LOL. Blessings
How about interviews being one of my weakness.especially giving the fact my resume says I've been with the same company for so long ??
My greatest weaknesses is failing at the job and we'll math but I understand some but can please give so good advice?
Hello, thank you for your feedback. If your greatest weakness is the major part of your job, then that's a job you will never be successful doing. It might be time to find another job...
My weakness is that I'm a bad public speaker but I tried to improve this speaking with my manager to let me keep a short brief in front of my colleagues and I reiceved a good feedback from my team and manager. How is this answer?
my weakness is im shy with a big crowd
Hi Darnell, thanks for the video, but I want to get the resume template, but I lost my visa card and I don't have credit on it, so how can I get the money transferred so I can be able to get the resume template? I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Hello Clement, thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it more than you know. I'm sorry, but the only way you can get the resume template is via your credit card!!! Sorry... 😞
Any second interview advice
My main weaknesses are nervousness.
Hello Abhinav, thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it! The only way to get past nervousness is practice, practice, and practice some more!
Clarke thanks for appreciating me.
And sir I want to speak flaunt English then I want to guide me.
How can possible this things
You had some really good Jobs
Hey Ms. Collins, yes I did! I made it a point to go after only those types of positions.
I do care too much, i can’t say no...
Hi Darrell I wonder if I can say that one of my weaknesses is my poor ability of speaking English? Thanks
Hey Harold, yes, that is a weakness, now tell them what you are doing to manage around that weakness.
@@DarnellClarke thank you Darnell, actually I will be in a interview this Friday 21th, and I was concerned in these kind of questions. I just found your videos couple of weeks ago, and you are couching very well on this kind of the personal stuff that we need to improve our lives.
Thank you again.
Hey Harold, thanks again, keep watching the video, they will serve you well.
Can I say projecting my voice is a weakness? I’ve worked at a job where it wasn’t really necessary to because I’d come off overwhelming and I’m tryna land a job at a Nike store and I feel like it’s necessary to be open and speak clear
Im definitely willing to take my voice to the next level however I don’t know if it will sound corny to say that
Hello, sorry, but that does NOT sound like a weakness. It really sounds like a strength!
Take your voice to the next level, and if they don't like it, you wouldn't want to work there in the first place!
Sorry I mean I feel like I speak too low so I tend not to speak as loud
Oh, yes, that is a weakness. Since you know that, then you need to let Nike know you are working on it, then tell them how. And the results of your efforts.
Can one be , I talk too much lol... I conversate a lot with people? The interview is to work at Nike retail store
No, please don't say that! Give me a few of your weaknesses and let me select one for you.
Will this be a good story for my greatest weakness. I you look at my resume I lack certification, however I was still able to perform my job successful and effectively. I'm currently taking an online class to secure my certificate.
Hello Jerald, thank you for your comment, I really appreciate more than you know. That is NOT a personal weakness! So, now that will not work. You must describe a personal weakness!!!
@@DarnellClarke, I'm struggling to think of a weakness that will not jeopardize my job interview. I know this is an odd question to you. Would you be able to suggest like a generic answer weakness question? TY!
Hello! Can I say leadership is a weakness? I am detail oriented, dependable but I'm not into leading, I've been asked at multiple jobs to be a team lead & I never wanted that responsibility? How can I spin that into my weakness I have a job interview this weak and I'm cramming my brain with info. I've never been great at interviews..thank you in advance.
Hello Mikarenee28, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know. No, please don't say "Leadership" is a weakness. That's one of the main things employers are looking for. It's alright not to want to be in leadership. My wife is that way. Then you must become an excellent SME (Subject Matter Expert) in your field. Here is my Interviewing Cheatsheet, go check it out. It will help you with your interviewing. (www.darnellc.com/pl/44585).
Weren't you also on In Living Color? David Alan Greer? Sorry, had to. Great vids though.
LOL, thank you for your feedback! I get that all the time!!! 😀
It’s on Sunday.... help! :(
Hello, what do you need help with?
Geez, I wish I knew where this man worked in his career. LOL
I was wondering how would you answer this question: "What is your greatest professional failure"? I got asked this recently and unfortunately I froze. I gave an answer eventually but the interviewer said that's not a failure try again. Please help thank you.
I answered that one not long ago. lol. Same thing I wasn't ready for that my answer was, "I stayed in a position with a company for too long. After I received my degree, I was in a rut and comfortable where I was. Even when I knew it was time to move on to bigger things for myself and financially for my family. It was hardest to leave my coworkers and friends behind more than my position." I was told it was a good answer, I got a job offer but they didnt offer me enough money so I turned it down.
My weakness is talking in front many unknown people - the more there are the worse it is. It is different to people I know but the new public I have quite significant stage fright. The worse is before talking but fortunatelly during the speach I relax.
Hey, my friend, that is a good weakness, tell them what do you do to overcome that weakness.
@@DarnellClarke great speed.

Most welcome professional.
While I like the approach of trying to figure out things you don't like doing and try to avoid them in the next job you are applying for, I don't agree that you can avoid things you don't like doing! Even in the stated example, about not being detail oriented.. I feel every single job needs a person who can see both the big picture and some details. This was a lesson I learned early in my work life, so for me, this is why I couldn't see that answer being acceptable....
Hello Jennifer, first let me apologize for not replying sooner, I just missed your comment. Now to answer your comment. Why in the world would you want to be at a job you don’t like doing? You would NEVER be great at doing it. No matter what. You can’t be great at work until you love what you do and you would NEVER love what you do, if you don’t like it first. And you would NEVER like it, unless you were good at doing it. And you would NEVER be good at doing it, if it doesn’t connect to your STRENGHTS… Period!!!! ALL YOU WOULD EVER BE IS AVERAGE.
As for every single job needs a person who can see both the big picture and some details. Yes, I agree with you. But here’s the thing, if you are a big picture thinker, like I am, I can’t get bogged down with all the details. It would frustrate me to no ends. Therefore, I do not take or go after jobs that requires that type of skills to be successful in that job.
That’s all I was saying… Jennifer, I want to thank you for taking the time to view my video and submitting your feedback. I appreciate it more than you know… Thank You!
Hi. I noticed that you wear UNDER ARMOR tshirts! nice!
Thanks... I like UA too!

Hello, thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it! Ok, will do...
Cupcakes is my biggest weakness
Jon Jon, you are funny!!! 😂
@@DarnellClarke haha I'm glad I made you laugh! I might have to use that one sometime lol. Thank you for all your videos! I been watching them everyday to prepare for interviews in future jobs that I've applied recently. Very helpful and useful
@@DarnellClarke my job requires me to be detailed oriented as a phlebotomist. How can I implement maybe being inpatient as a weakness but flaring it up to make it sound great
Hey Jon Jon, thank you for your "outstanding" feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know.
You can use being inpatient, but make sure that's a real weakness.
Next time you make a video like this make the people tell you in the comments what their weakness is
Hello, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know. Okay, will do...
For this question you dont give sample answers. Your not help others by explaining your 3 steps.
If you have never had a job then everything is your weakness. Therefore, you should never apply for a job.Or if you are on unemployment tell the person you hate working and Mr. Darnell Clark told me not to work on things I don't like doing. On a more serious note, everyone claims that saying you are a perfectionist is phony because it is really strength.I highly disagree with that.Being a perfectionist is one of the biggest weaknesses a person can have. Most perfectionist never start because they feel everything has to be perfect.Ifit is not perfect then they think why even bother.Trust me I am a perfectionist myself.Meaning everything has to be perfect from start to finish.Trust me when I say it is the furthest thing from a strength.
Hello, thanks for your feedback and yes, I have to agree with you.
The best answer is: i die if i do not eat and sleep for more than 7 days while getting things done :-D, or i can work only 72 hours without sleep
Sorry disagree. A weakness should directly relate to your potential job and not in the past. The trick is that you have other strengths to combat that weakness. I believe this is to test your character and ingenuity. If the rest of your interview shows you are capable this should be a positive .
Hey Mr. H, thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it more than you know.
The key thing is to take a strength but word it as weakness like "I'm such a perfectionist with my work that I would give up all of my spare time to make sure my shit gets done at the cost of me own family"
Man.. do u have to repeat the same thing in every single video ?!
Hello, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it more than you know.
Stop watching people like to bring others down are you making videos like this
@@ghisellesimon162 Hello, I don't really understand your question, please ask it again.
Oh you mean detail oriented
Yes, sorry for the confusion!!!! :)
Darnell you don't have to apologize to anyone. I mean....She's not God. You can pronounce your words anyway you like. My goodness these people are so hateful.
Thanks for your feedback :)
I can't agree with Darnell's advice. Nice guy, but doesn't demonstrate expertise in recruitment, selection and interview skills. Having worked in and around the recruitment industry for over 20 years and having interviewed more than a thousand candidates throughout my whole career (not a brag, just a fact), this advice is not the right advice. sorry Darnell, like I said, nice guy, has integrity and passion but doesn't have all the answers and I wouldn't advise potential interviewees to have true confidence in this advice.
Hello Bryn, no worries mate! I respect your point of view and I receive all feedback, good or bad! Have a great day...
Bryn, having 20 years of experience doesn't qualify you to tell someone else that they're not giving the right advice. Many have more years of experience than you do, but that does not mean what they're saying "Is the right advice." This man is encouraging authenticity and not arrogance. The arrogance attached to how many people you've interviewed is whats considered bad advice and doenst make you an expert. Darnell, keep encouraging and let nothing silence you. Thank you for making this video and for responding at a higher level than what he expected. When they go low...you go high!
Hello Carmen, thanks for your words of encouragement...
You are weird
Hey Bryn, thank you for your feedback, I appreciate all comments good or bad. Thanks again!
