The "backup singer" in purple, Mike Mattison, used to be the lead singer for The Derek Trucks Band. When Derek married Susan Tedeschi, it would have been easy for Mike to leave to find another band to front, he is that good of a singer. But he chose to stay with the new band and I am so glad he did. They seem to really enjoy being together.
Great to Hear Mr. John Bell Singing Again Great Replacement For Original Singer Rythm Player yep that was me hahha lotta Fun Just remembering the Sounds of Panic Live!! Great Stuff!
Thats not that smile...lead singer needs to hear themselves......but yes she lets it go. - in short! ....many nuances when rehearsing/recording you want to translate on stage too...that chorus is a no no for any lead singer - esp in rehearsal. E1 has to be a sound engineer awareness level in a good band. ..etc
Wow!! The first time the bridge comes around, and all the voices open up. Holy shit. And the verse after that? This must have took flight on stage. Unreal. Probably my favorite soul song.
I love these backstage sessions. There’s magic watching TTB work out the final details before the show and then they walk on stage and the real magic begins!
I love these people. Great group of obviously talented singers/musicians. Especially love Susan. She is totally, wonderfully, unremittingly AUTHENTIC. 'Course Derek is no slouch!
Space Ghost 53 I felt the same at first, and couldn't understand what's so special about GD. But later, suddenly, i fell in love, and understood that there's nothing to understand ;) In TTB fell in love instantly though
I'll grant Blaine that the Dead were adventurous ace musicians. I admire their panoramic meld of rock, blues, country, jazz and beyond and their fearless, questing improv. However, Like Space Ghost 53, I have tried for decades to like the Dead , but IMHO Jerry could seldom sing on pitch, making harmonies painful, and even when he was on pitch, his voice was thin and weak. Bob wasn't much better, so the comparison to TTB, is, to me, ludicrous.
Since I first discovered the Dead almost 50 years ago, I get it that folks either love 'em or hate 'em. My point simply was that TTB is the first band I've heard since the late Sixties that has captured my interest in the same way. No other comparisons are implied.
TTB and GD? - Almost (!) not to compare in their music though both did great songs, and there surely is a musical (and personal) bridge from Allman Brothers - Warren Haynes/Derek Trucks - to Bob Weir, The Dead or Phil Lesh and Friends. Maybe in the end it's the band member's approach to music in general and a special kind of team spirit that makes them enjoy their music and their partnership. Can't feel sad listening to the music of both bands, it's always a flavour of light-heartedness and intensity even in the calm songs as e.g. He's Gone (GD) or Midnight in Harlem (TTB).
This is what music is about. The voices! People can more easily interact musically in a more intimate environment. When they put it on stage with more amplification, I bet so much was lost.
everything about this makes me so damn happy. the music of course, but the mellowness and relaxation between all of these perfect musicians makes the music possible. this is just a backstage rehearsal and tears were shed when the choir rises up
The BEST thing about TTB? It's all about the music. There are no backup singers, there are no backup horns. They're all stars, and they are all there for the music! (and I'm including the bands that join them on the Wheels of Soul Tours!)
At the 2:06-2:20 mark, Susan is so moved by her back up singer that she has John Bell take over the vocals. It's so cool when your own back up singers can emotionally move you as well. Love this song.
its possible that John Bell was supposed to take that part of the song. You see him tap hime self on the forehead ; like " crud I missed my mark". I don't know that for sure , just judging his reaction.
Best live show ever. I've seen them 5 time in 3 years and they are one of the few acts that never disappoint. Go see them! So much talent in that band makes every show special. I recommend a small theater 3,000 or so and you'll really enjoy.
I've listened to most versions of this song, none come even near this quality of interpretation. All others treat this great song as just another version, but, TTB give a level mile higher! Together with Midnight In Harlem, my favorite tracks by country mile.. Keep up the great work!
Love you guys! Sending my love and good vibes to you all, and to Kofi--I really hope that he is feeling good and makes a full recovery. This band is so tight man they are really doing everything right
It sounds amazing you guys !! Thank you for posting...I love watching the "process" ...the progression / development of your music. It gives more of a personal side whether it be instrumental / voice. A voice(not forgetting the instrument side of it all...) for the musician so to speak...hopefully that doesn't sound to corny. Again, Thank you for the ride !! From TC, Mi.
@@billwilliamson6699 , then apparently you haven't yet heard the much-older Ry Cooder version which some of us have been commenting about elsewhere in this thread. Go check it out, you can find it on UA-cam.
Susan Tedeschi should do her own... She sounds and plays amazing! I have her albums, and i want more!!! That voicee does not come often... Glad it was in my life-time.
Always remember, Derek is an Allman Brother...I listened to to him way before he met Susan. He was playin gospel on a slide gitter just a kid then 🙏🏻👍🏻👌🏻👏
So good... Soulful like nothing else can come any close! How come it gets captured so well? How come it gets so satisfying if it's not correctly "performed" from beginning to ending? It wasn't just microphones and sound engineering... It takes a hell of a lot of "soul" in the best sense of the definition of soul, if there's any.
This is very nicely done, although the horns were a little bit jarring when they came in. Personally I like Ry Cooder's version best of all, from his old Showtime live record many years ago. It's a teeny bit slower than the original or this one here, there's a great gospel trio doing vocals, and the slide solo from Ry is magnificent.
Eric Coltrane, I wasn't aware that Bobby Whitlock is even still alive, I haven't heard his name mentioned in decades. I swear it seems like the entire Derek and the Dominos sessions were cursed, as almost no one from that record fared very well in the years afterward. Carl Radle died of an overdose, Jim Gordon became schizophrenic and murdered his mother and is confined to an institution, and of course Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident. Eric Clapton went off into a drugged fog from which I'm not sure he ever really quite recovered.
I love to see such talent and passion on display. No over production, just talent performing a great classic, as good as it gets.
Is anyone else just crying? This is real music! Music that you feel. Doesn't get any better than this!!!!
Listen to James Carr greatest hits if you haven’t yet.
I got chills when the background vocals kicked in.. this is so powerful.
1:37 I cryed. So beatiful. Thank you.

Great to Hear Mr. John Bell Singing Again Great Replacement For Original Singer Rythm Player yep that was me hahha lotta Fun Just remembering the Sounds of Panic Live!! Great Stuff!
"That'll be good"... bit of an understatement. This is the most soulful thing I have heard in years. And its in a rehearsal room.
Derek is so calm. His timing is just perfect, just a joy to watch.
I feel privileged to be a witness to this magic! So beautiful! Thank you!
I love how Susan smiles when the chorus behind her really lets go; she clearly enjoys them and they feed off each other.
Wouldn't you aim for one of her smiles tho? Or Derrick's, too, for that matter.
Or she smiles and thinks; God they are powerfull
Thats not that smile...lead singer needs to hear themselves......but yes she lets it go. - in short! ....many nuances when rehearsing/recording you want to translate on stage too...that chorus is a no no for any lead singer - esp in rehearsal. Her/their voice/ has got SOO MUCH soul shes great truely
Feel like I went to church, in a good way
@@jonastalks she has the best voice in the business. She on one side, Alison Krauss on the other. The two best voices of this century.
Where can I buy tickets to this room?
God . . . When those vocals kick in I tingled all over. powerful.
Love this group, the guitar player should get an Oscar for his great performance.
It's so emotionally strong, this cover. I guess I'm not the only one who cried.
These are musicians. The real deal. And Susan. A superstar.
Beautiful- The commitments brought Me here .
Must be a great event for all of you Tedeschi Trucks Band !!! Cheers Christopher

This was one of the great tracks from The Commitments, where I first fell in love with it.
yes you'r not alone,i still remember every scene of the movie
So agree, just about my favourite rendition, and to think Andrew Strong was only 17 when he sang it !
How great is this band.....They do this in the dressing room. Real music right hear.
I haven't been as excited by a band since the early days of the Dead.... and that's been awhile!
I grant you, TTB and the Dead don't seem to have much in common, maybe, but the musicianship...
Space Ghost 53 I felt the same at first, and couldn't understand what's so special about GD. But later, suddenly, i fell in love, and understood that there's nothing to understand ;)

Me: "No one can top these great vocals." Background singers: "Hold our beers."
They call it the choir.
I love listening to Susan sing, and Derek is second to none on the slide.
Sensational. We are so very lucky!
the classiest act in the business. Susan Tedeschi Derek Trucks.
I never thought I would say this: this version is as good as the live version of Bobby King and Ry Cooder plus band. Hope they visit Europe!!!!
Tedeschi-Trucks did a great job with a great song. Wish they would do a whole CD of similar Southern Soul music.
I think they have (?) They cover a whole lot in concerts past.
This is what music is about. The voices! People can more easily interact musically in a more intimate environment. When they put it on stage with more amplification, I bet so much was lost.
Majorly gave me chills. Awesome gorgeous performance of this awesome gorgeous song.
Feels like i just went to church so much Soul.
Everything this band does is great!!!! Susan's voice is beautifull and Derek's playing is out of this world please come to Brussels again :)

Great example of why I love Susan's voice. And of course the whole thing is just fantastic. Thanks!
That was fabulous!!!
For all our unmet loved ones at the dark end of the streets in Houston, God Bless 💟

Speaking of Houston, when get a chance listen to Blackberry Smokes song, "Sunrise in Texas".
I think I could listen to these guys play this song 50x in a row and still being love with their performance!
Just too beautiful. Thank you all.

Fucking love this band!
Man oh MAN! The bridge in this song puts goose bumps on top of my goose bumps!!

They are sooo good. I can listen to this all day
Awesome! I didn't know this song til I heard Hozier cover it - which is gorgeous, look it up - but this is so fun!! love all of y'all!
Incredible, never heard a better version... and this is backstage , practicing
Aww man I just love these guys and everything they stand for What an amazing sound they are
Oh my gosh... I got a little weepy listening to this. So gorgeous, even as a rehearsal.
We are privileged to witness this...
Keep posting these backstage rehearsals, they are sweet for those of us who cant attend the concerts!
Since i heard this - i only want "Live-Concerts" in a Hotel Room. Superb. Thanks - and Greetings from Germany.
It's a Room At Red Rocks not a hotel room.
I love Susan's smile at the end, such a beautiful smile and it was all for me. 😂
You could put this on an album as is and that would be a wrap!!! Pure Talent
The new album has really grown on me every day now I REALLY love it. All tape babe and it sounds fabulous
Roy Hamilton and James Carr are proud of you for performing this epic Masterpiece
I love Derek trucks and his wife Susan tedeschi. Great video!
Ik know the James Carr version. Carr had a wonderful voice. But these people here are just great musicians. Thanks for sharing!
These guys are so great!! Cool watching them work it out.
Stirring!!! That Muscle Shoals/Memphis songwriting is stellar, but this rendition takes it up a notch.
what a Hang .. so good .. I'd want to join in but I would be quite happy doing the catering anything to be part of the crew ..

How many of computerized pop tarts could just sit there on a couch and sing.
This is just amazing!
I love how Susan looks at the background singer and smirks when she is over singing her and points away.

Damn! What a beautiful version
Jesus help me to get right! I love, love, love the fat sound when horns are added. 💅😎🎷🎺🎧💓
so great, thank you
One of my favourite songs played from my favourite band.
Unbelievable! pure soul!
Dam this is beautiful..
Oh daaaamn that blonde chick rocks..you should all cover many rivers to cross those backing singers would nail it 👌🏾

I would love to see Ry Cooder and Bobby whitlock play and record with these guys before it's too late. With some Clapton thrown in there as well :)
Would absolutely love to see Ry and Derek do a number on "Dark End of the Street", one of Ry's great tracks from way back...
