Its stuff like this that brought people like the late, Great Eddie Rabbit to Sheffield. Yes he was country but he wanted to mix in some r&b and the Amazing song, suspicions was born!
There are so many wonderful versions of this song. I suppose knowing he wrote the song colors my opinion, but there is a tender, understated quality to the way he sings this that I find quite endearing. I had no idea he was such a great performer until recently. So fine.
They are both great music making and recording magicians and they played a very significant role and contribution to the Muscle Shoals music/recording industry.
I wish there was an equivalent to Muscle Shoals or the Stax/Volt studios in Memphis today.Amazing things happened at those places every day that likely couldn't happen today. It was like the musicians and writers were sheltered there from what was happening outside.
Of all the recorded versions of this song,I like Percy Sledge's best.I was also kind of stunned to learn that this guy wrote probably the first girl power song that I ever heard,Aretha Franklin's Do Right Woman in the mid 60's.
Great version, but my vote still goes to Graham Parsons, the only one who keeps the emotion and pathos, yet somehow doesn't let it drag, not to mention the beautiful inventive work of the Flying B. Brothers in the background.
Fantastic, soulful performance on Letterman. His voice seems to get better with age. I wish Dave had done a proper intro, tho. Too many people have no clue who Dan Penn is.
maybe he's not as good as Carr, but nevertheless a) he wrote the tune and b) his voice is gorgeous too - we should stop always comparing one with the other, always telling others that this or that version is the definite one - there are so many brilliant musicians offering differing versions, all we have to do is listen and enjoy!
Zij hebben dit ook gedaan bij Jools Holland (BBC). Vergeet ook niet de fraaie uitvoeringen van Ry Cooder, ook in het bijzonder Ry Cooder live bij de BBC.
Thanks for posting this, but please list correct info. In the intro, Penn says he co-wrote this with Chips Moman. He also wrote songs with the gentleman playing piano and singing harmony, Spooner Oldham, but this ain't one of 'em. :-)
If Elvis recorded one of your songs, Tom Parker insisted you give them 50% of your mechanical royalties. There were many tunes that Elvis wanted to record but didn't when the authors balked at this deal.
This is a fine song that has been covered countless times. It's so good that it would be hard to screw it up, though a few have. But I agree that Gram's and Ry Cooder/Terry Evan's are at the top.
Love this song for a long time more than 40 years.
Spooner Oldham is one of the most talented musicians, as well as one of the nicest, down to earth people you will ever meet.
This song is a fine synthesis of country music and soul. It's little wonder it's been recorded by so many artists from so many different genres.
A true classic. Where are you going to hear the co-writer of the song and Spooner singing together. Priceless!!!
Thank You Dan Penn & Spooner. Such a meaningful song.
A great duo of talent ..and a great song
James Carr had an amazing voice but it is nice to hear Dan Penn sing it and Spooner Oldham is always terrific. They age with such grace!
Soulful, authentic, and as good as it gets. Just excellent.
one of our muscle shoals artist, so love this song, Dan, and of course the incomparable Spooner on the piano....love, love, love it......
so many covers, but the writer is always or most nearly always the best one.
still love James Carr's cover.....
@@patgriffinsloan3779Try Ry Cooder LIVE aswell

Pure Americana; country, soul, gospel are all in there. Outstanding.
Love to hear Dan sing! Smooooth!
Auw sooooo beautiful that hurts tears in my eyes
Dan you should have put these tunes on your own album! Why am i only now hearing this in 2020?.Great phrasing and delivery!
A real HAPPY 81th Birthday to Mr. Dan Penn and really ALL the best to him ... (2022-1116)
What a great soul voice - why didn't he record it more?
Absolutely classic voice

Golden age for sure!
You put it better than I could, he's got a tone of resignation that makes this song make sense
Prachtig prachtig prachtig. Thanks Maus.
This is one of my favorite songs by a
great artist.
This will always make me weep
Great song, and great version
Written in 30 minutes..unbelievable

Thank You Amigos. For such a beautiful song.

So wonderful
Eva Cassidy Brought me here,
I never knew that different artist sang this lyric,
It must of been so popular
Of all the recorded versions of this song,I like Percy Sledge's best.I was also kind of stunned to learn that this guy wrote probably the first girl power song that I ever heard,Aretha Franklin's Do Right Woman in the mid 60's.
Just wonderful...........................
amazing!!!!!!!!!
And today is Dan Penn's birthday. Happy 71st, Mr. Penn.
Beautufil song
Cheers!
It's from a dutch radioshow called 2 meter sessies. A bit like unplugged, but without an audience.
Beautiful. A real soulfull vocal, close to James Carr imho.
oooo, beautiful harmony ....
I still like the way Gram Parsons performed the song.
Absolutely
Great version, but my vote still goes to Graham Parsons, the only one who keeps the emotion and pathos, yet somehow doesn't let it drag, not to mention the beautiful inventive work of the Flying B. Brothers in the background.
Great!... #82 ✝ {9-17-2022}
Nobody does it better!
How's it going Paul? Good to see ya!
Ik heb het een aantal jaar geleden opgenomen van 2 meter sessies op tv.
You were great on Letterman tonight great performance!

Don't call it a James Carr classic when the man in the video wrote the song! I prefer Dan Penn singing it, anyway.
Gregg Allman does an awesome version of this song...
No words
Gram Parsons RIP and EmmyLou Harris did a great 1973 country cover of this!
As did Ry Cooder. Gram covered Do Right Woman on Gilded Palace of Sin with The Flying Burrito Brothers, as well!
maybe he's not as good as Carr, but nevertheless a) he wrote the tune and b) his voice is gorgeous too - we should stop always comparing one with the other, always telling others that this or that version is the definite one - there are so many brilliant musicians offering differing versions, all we have to do is listen and enjoy!

MAN......
Beautiful....Can ANYONE tell me what this clip was taken from??I have GOT to get a copy of it...Dan and Spooner, tearing it up!!Awesomeness
Save this one to your account.
I find it strange Elvis Presley never recorded this great song. It would suit his voice and style perfectly.
+D'Ascoyne
His hero, the great Roy Hamilton, does a lovely version, recorded at American Studios in Memphis.
If Elvis recorded one of your songs, Tom Parker insisted you give them 50% of your mechanical royalties. There were many tunes that Elvis wanted to record but didn't when the authors balked at this deal.
check out Roy Hamilton's version...
Fame sound✨
Everyone talks about James Carr's version, but for me there's only Percy Sledge - and this.
Sorry, but Roy Hamilton slays them all.
Bolt24 Hot Sounds , yep!
I came to this song through Pat Kelly's reggae version. So...different beginnings but we end the same. Peace.
This is American music.
weet iemand te melden utt welke documentaire en wanneer dit fragment is? Zo te zien RTL5 maar wanneer>
Written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman, not Spooner Oldham.
Linda Ronstadt did a very soulful cover in "Heart Like a Wheel."
Parsons version was the best.. in my opinion
+Curtis Farrar
i do agree, along with Ry Cooder
This is a fine song that has been covered countless times. It's so good that it would be hard to screw it up, though a few have. But I agree that Gram's and Ry Cooder/Terry Evan's are at the top.
the afghan whigs do a solid cover of this too
great song . . . check out Elvis Costello's version on The Delivery Man - he does it proud
Pretty good but he is no James Carr
