    I have been leaning forward for more than a year and men it really does helps with the concentration and squeeze on that specific muscle. I personally have benefit from leaning but that doesn’t mean that everyone should do it. Great video like always !

    For over a year now whether lying or seated I took John Meadow's advice by lightening the weight and pointing my toes. Plantar vs dorsal flex the foot. The stretch and intensity multiplier is CRAZY. It's really brought out the sweep or width from the side. Plus I like when I put shorts or pants on and my hamstrings are filling out the back 😁

      Do you point your toes upward or forward

    Yes! We use silly names to get my clients to remember positioning. This we call "midget in a high chair." To create the proper pelvic tilt, I've found that bringing the back seat forward until they naturally tilt stops forward motion, and puts my athletes in the right position. If they keep their head in a natural position not looking down, the tilt usually happens naturally. Great for folks with long legs and eliminates the "hauling" ability. No need for heavy weight either. Treating the hamstrings like biceps, ( in French hamstring literally translates to "leg bicep") is often a way to get the proper mental focus.

    I feel more lengthening when I lean forward (from the hip and chest pushed out). When I sit straight up I feel I'm not working the hamstring fully.

    In my untrained professional opinion, I think what people feel when they lean forward in the leg curl machine is their own body mass pressing down more on their quads, giving them the sensation of more stretch. I may be wrong but that's why I watch these videos. Keep up the great work. :)

      No, it's because hip flexion ( AKA What happens when you lean forward during a seated leg curl) stretches your hamstrings more

  • @jrippon

    In a nutshell, you need to 'hip hinge' forward. But, as you say, some don't have the proprioception or even the mobility to know what parts are actually rotating forward. Same with trying to distinguish between crunching and hip flexing!
    Even sitting upright in these machines, I can't brace myself strongly enough to stop from sliding forward on the seat when I use a decent load. Jeez, it's not for training triceps! They should all come with seat belts 😅

    Loved this series! Funny how when I watched part 2 on the leg press and it’s relationship with hamstrings, you clarified quite nicely that the hamstrings are more isometrically trained….then I go through the algorithm of UA-cam (and without naming names) I see bodybuilders on their channels promoting hamstring training and attributing growth through leg press and squatting lol

    • @HypertrophyCoach

      If you want to further shorten the rec fem, and it comes from hip flexion and not spinal flexion. Both ways will likely take away from overall quad output. So I don’t really ever program it

      You actually want to ab crunch to stabilize hips to isolate hamstring or quad engagement. You will be able to feel better squeeze on both muscles through ab crunch contraction to stabilize

    • @daverice23
      @daverice23 3 роки тому

      @@rockon8174 try if your hip moves you have less
      You have more activation. If you lock your hips down w an ab crunch not a lean forward you will feel the difference. Try and see before you shoot it down. You can actually feel a huge difference. Move less gain more. Hamstring crosses hip joint, hip joint stays fixed w Ab crunch, hamstrings engage more no faulty logic.

    • @ebuehler1050

      I suggest leaning back as far as possible (or getting in a "posterior pelvic tilt") if you want to really target the rectus femoris (the only quad muscle that crosses the hip joint).

  • @the.natural.guy.
    @the.natural.guy. 3 роки тому

    I dont understand. Why do some want to lengthen the hamstring on a seated leg curl when the idea is to shorten it and focus on the contraction. Is it to change the contraction relative to the pelvis?

    • @HypertrophyCoach
      @HypertrophyCoach  3 роки тому +1

      It’s good to train muscles through their full contractile ROM. So if someone had more hip flexion, and didn’t lean forward, they would not train their hams fully lengthened range

    I might be drawing a blank but is there 1 exercise that involves completely lengthening the hamstring to completely shortening the hamstring via pelvic AND knee area?
    Thanks!

      Glute ham raises. John Meadows (may he RIP) did multiple videos with this movement.

    • @PaulSteere
      @PaulSteere 3 роки тому

      You could do GHR's that way yes. What I find with that movement is that you're obviously far stronger at the hip extension part than the knee flexion part due to the glute involvement (hence why you can RDL more than you can leg curl) so you end up limited by the latter when it comes to loading and it's is why you see people use a lot of momentum when performing it.
      Personally if using a GHR bench I'd pick one thing to train: so back extensions for pure hip flexion, knee flexion only like a Nordic curl keeping the hips as extended as possible, or a razor curl where it's also knee flexion only but the hips stay fully flexed throughout.

    • @the_notorious_bas
      @the_notorious_bas 3 роки тому

      @@PaulSteere Yeah, I can fully agree with your resistance curve argument. In my previous gym they had a GHR bench and I used a resistance band to ease the curl part of the movement. I realize it was sub-optimal, so someone who could built a machine to perform this exercise with enough resistance during the full ROM would be a biomechanical genius in my book. Anyway, I mostly combine leg curls with cable pull throughs for my hamstring work.
