  • In today’s video we giving a 90’s faux orange wood end table a furniture makeover. I’m going back to basics. You can find these tables on Facebook marketplace or in your local thrift store for pretty cheap. I think they are a great beginner project as they are not too big and you don’t need a ton of products.
    I usually use a primer but since this is fake wood and no odors we are just going to use some High quality Chalk Paints and a good sealer. If you are just beginning this video is for you. You do not need complicated techniques to achieve beautiful results.

    For an incredibly smooth surface, sand with 220 or 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. You wet the sandpaper before you sand. Then wipe down, Add your next coat and repeat. You'll be amazed how it smooths any irregularities like brush strokes. Good luck.

    Amy thank you so much! I picked up 2 little end tables off the side of the road the other day. I painted them with chalk paint, 1 is like a deep emerald green with a sage dry brush over it...and the second on is like a deep Grey with a light gray day brush. They have ALOT of scrolling and detail around the base, so the dry brushing really brought out that beautiful woodwork! The top of the green one, I did a faux green marble look, and the other one, I did a Carrara white marble look. They look amazing! I can't believe I was capable of doing that...of course, you were there every step of the way (in your videos).
    So being that the tops are marble looking, I naturally want them to be glossy. So I've been doing thin coats of poly clear gloss. But after 3 coats each, they are not glossy or even shiny! I think I worked the poly too much, like you said. Now I know how to fix it, thanks to you! Do you think I should leave the rest of the pieces matte, or should I put a satin finish?

    I really liked this look. By having the lines on top from that wash, it gives the appearance of stained wood. (grain.) And having the plain wood on the bottom have a different colour makes this piece stand out. I have an idea for another project. The pattern of the veneer on the top of this piece was really a stand out. When you have a fascinating wood grain that is not damaged, I suggest a wood stain. You can get varied colours and the wood grain/veneer pattern would show. This was the only downside for me. I love the grain in wood or beautiful wood veneer patterns as this piece had. If not damaged, use it.

    Lovely. Great explanation and tips. Would you kindly tell me what the original top of the table is? Is there any other finish you could have done that would update it but show the wood grain and design of the table top; or was it too fake to keep; or just not trendy enough to sell if the top wasn't not covered with paint? Thank you,

    How long do we wait between the sealer coats?

  • @katierose1234
    @katierose1234 3 роки тому

    looks great! I have a question. I used rustoleum matte clear top coat over my chalk paint and it looks streaky. Im a beginner and unsure what to do now. do I add another layer of top coat? or do I need to sand and apply another coat of chalk paint?

    • @FlipItFurniture
      @FlipItFurniture  3 роки тому

      There’s a huge learning curve with top coats. Sometimes they can be easy and sometimes it’s tricky. If it were me I would wait till completely dries and then apply another coat. And possibly a third. Is your chalk paint light or dark? If it still looks streaky and you’re not happy with it you don’t have to sand you can just chalk paint over it and try again. If you’re using a dark color It’s much easier to see streaks so you can always add a little bit of your chalk paint into your topcoat. I always use a separate container to mix them. It really helps if your just using one color. Another tip is to make sure you’re using an even amount on your brush and try not to over work it. You can also wet your brush with water. That helps too.

      @FlipItFurniture  3 роки тому

      Yes! I’ve tried them both. I like them both! I used Rustoleum for a few years. I still use it once in a while. The only problem is Rustoleum only has a few colors. It's s a little thicker too. I tend to gravitate toward thinner chalk paint. It’s just a little easier to apply, and I think there are less brush strokes. I’ve only used Waverly a few times. I thought it was an excellent paint and held up nicely.
