  • Jaskanwal Singh lives in Toronto, and got badly bullied at school for his turban. To stop the bullying and become more popular he decided to stop wearing a turban. He also felt girls would find him more attractive if he cut his hair. For nineteen years he didn't wear a turban and while he became more popular he also started binge drinking and felt unfulfilled.
Last year he stopped drinking and decided to wear a turban again. He now helps young Sikhs who get bullied at school for their turbans.

It is basically the only biological reason to protect your head and third eye dasam duar. The dasam duar in sikhism is how we connect to the creator and anyonw can do it by calling gods name whatever u call him like lord, waheguru, allah, ram etc they are all the names of the one.

Dude, it's ultimately your choice but I highly encourage you to keep your hair. my parents actually had me go to school with cut hair because they didn't want the shame of their son cutting his hair when he got older. But now I decided to grow out my hair personally from my choice. It was hella awkward because everyone was so confused but I just had to explain it to them. luckily I had enough confidence in myself to be strong and not be affected by their comments. now I am the happiest I've ever been. It's ultimately your decision but pls remember the pride and power your hair shows. Guru ji wanted us to have long hair and to cover our heads to stick out of the crowd. he wanted us to be different so in case someone needed help they knew who to go to. Our turban is our crown.

These names were created by the upper castes to make us feel low of ourselves. Believe me we are like tigers living among sheeps, one day we will see our reflection in the water, and will come to know our true identities. Untill then stay strong brother you have my blessings with you and your whole family. Thanks for sharing your story.

And remember brother Valmiki was an docoit, who used to rob and kill strangers passing from jungles. He was an low caste till he became a maharishi by gaining knowledge from Vedas. His caste was also promoted to brahmin. The caste system in India was based on our merits not from our birth. If you read rigveda the first Vedic scripture, in it the indra is regarded as the lord of earth and rudra and narayan are regarded as warmongers or destroyers. And Brahman (the one who has transcended to the ultimate) is considered the one above all. And believe me this was written between 5000-4700bc approximately 7000 years old. Some historians claim it to be 14000 years old. And it is believed to be written by lord Brahma himself. This Idea of Brahman was manipulated by self proclaimed Brahmins who extended the vedas during the Vedic period (1500-150bce) during this period the caste system prevailed and lakhs of people lost their dignity and respect for being born in lower caste. This Vedic civilization was started from now Afghanistan and spread till now haryana, punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. I know I have given you a very long explanation of our roots but believe me we are the true owners of this vast land of india. We were separated by caste to hide our own heritage and ownership from ourselves. I hope I might have been able to give you some picture on this issue.

I was forced by my parents to wear pagri all times.
I was beaten when I cut my hair. I felt as if I murdered someone. I never did anything wrong. I was insulted by relatives. I felt the same like Muslim girls who are forced to wear hijab. I follow Sikhism but people who want to dress in a particular way and wearing kirpan , want to prove that they are more closer to God is wrong.
They think after having Amrit they become the supreme guards or loved ones. Most of them cramp path like parotts they don't even know meaning. All they of is gossip. Guru Nanak said all humans are equal there was dress code. Later when body of guru teg Bahadur was not identified then khalsa was established to distinguish Sikhs. I see a a contradiction here. There is so much hyprocracy. People still follow caste system in Sikhism as well. Girls are killed in womb. Recent cencus in Punjab. Punjab is into drugs. Religion just create discrimination, like you came up and asked why I mentioned Muslims .. It was a very vital comparison. There is no rule however that I can't mention them. I will tell you the reason why in most references its mentioned however...
I have no hate for anyone, I m not religious , I just believe God is one. I have Muslim friends infact there are texts from Muslim peers in Guru Granth Sahib.
On the contrary there have been Muslim king's from 1500 to 1699 stating Babar to Aurangzeb, who were forcing Hindus to become Muslim. They destroyed many temples in India and made mosques.
Infact whole Sikh history is filled the torture and sacrifice by gurus to save faith. Read the history .. so it becomes inevitable not to mention them.

Chloe Bitterlin - Sikhs carry a kirpan (curved knife or sword) as one their five ceremonial articles of faith. It can be from 3 inches to 9 inches long with one cutting edge which may be blunt or sharp. He was also wearing one in a later scene. Of course, it will depend on local laws whether it may be worn legally or not.
He may have seemed more interesting to you when he was drinking but he obviously wasn’t feeling as contented and fulfilled as he does now.
I have a few Sikh friends and some wear turbans, some don’t. To each his own. 😊

@@aliciarobertson4979 Beautifully said. There is more to life than drinking and partying, and I advise anyone who finds such a lifestyle to be that interesting.. to abstain for 2-3 months and see how their perception of the world can change. When life becomes about inner discovery and inner fulfillment, I can assure you that life becomes more meaningful. As you said though, to each their own :)

      Jaskanwal Singh - Thank you.
I am a great grandmother in the winter of my life. I have a deep abiding faith which gives me inner peace, contentment, and fulfilment. I am not sheltered and removed by this faith from knowing lives ruined, and lessened by alcohol, drugs, and mental illness which was sometimes precipitated by their “interesting” lifestyle. Before I retired I was a health professional and worked helping patients struggling with life due to these problems.
I agree with you about inner fulfilment, and I also agree with you on abstaining and comparing the party lifestyle with the newly acquired perception. I think the young man’s former lifestyle as a party animal became a vacuous existence and he gained more by leaving it behind. I was saddened to read that Chloe Bitterlin thought his life when he was drinking (to excess by his own admission) sounded “more interesting” from the outside. As I said originally, from the inside he must not have thought that as he re-evaluated his life. Now he has inner balance, he is a a joy to his peers, and a mentor to young people. What is not to love about inner contentment and peace of mind?!

H’Alicia That young man agrees because that young man is me! Inner contentment and joy has brought me much more happiness and satisfaction than any of the days I spent spiralling into a pointless “partying” lifestyle that had no direction or meaning to it other than emotional escapism. Totally agree with all that you said - we must nurture and take care of our minds first and foremost!

Maybe if more people opened up about the ways they were bullied, mocked, teased, neglected and ridiculed.. then they would heal through it and share their messages which lets them overcome insecurities and become more understanding and loving towards others.

Sikh kids bullying is different because they have a unique identity they may not be confident about. they already don't fit in and don't always feel confident about how they look, so when they are made fun of for their religion and heritage it can damage their personality. there are some things that you just don't make fun of and one of them is someone's religion . it can hurt them because they already feel like they don't fit in well and bullying can cause more hurt

@Rich 91 There was much more to this story than the 5 minute video clip portrayed.. I grew up in a rough hood (considered the roughest) in Toronto, and I was involved in many fights from a young age because of my turban, sometimes fighting against 6-7 people. Though I physically fought back and stood up for myself, I just started to suppress the experiences in an area and community where it was about "toughening up" to "man up". In addition to gang culture, alcoholism, police encounters, drugs, racism etc. there was also other issues within the community that made things very problematic. Essentially, I became lost at a young age and sought to create a new personality, so to speak. If you would like to know more, my Instagram is @jaskanwal.singh - I share more of my story there!
