I am not Sikh but I understand this by living and working with Sikhs ..... Being Sikh is about good actions and living a good life . They are great people and the world would be a better place with a lot more Sikhs in it . If a man wants to grow his hair , grow a beard , wear a turban , thats just fine by me . I am Native American, 26 years old, and I just befriended a Sikh. His name is Baljeet.
I grew up in Southern America (Mississippi) so I was always taught to stay away from people in turban/anybody with different skin color. I KNOW that way of thinking is wrong, it never felt right to judge anyone because of their outer appearance..
I am older now, I lead my own life. I understand different religions and I do my research. I connected with the Divine Spirit through meditation. I would kneel down on the ground and beg for forgiveness and for the Divine to watch over me and lead me away from negativity.
For a long time I listened to my ego...I cared too much about what people thought, I thought I would always be lonely because no one else I knew listened to the Divine. But now...my Sikh friend came into my life and opened my eyes. I am learning more about Sikh religion in a very tough time of my life and now everything makes sense...I am grateful for this religion. I WISH I would have been introduced to it sooner but I know everything happens at the time it is suppose to happen.
Now I do not feel so alone and I am never cutting my hair again 😂 💕
Thank you for this video.
Hope you get through this tough time of yours! If you need anyone to talk to we are all here for you! My IG is @prabjotmatta 💯💯

Also, for those of you who are continually going on with the "we keep kesh to respect God's creation", well, in that case - why wear clothes, Waheguru didn't send us in these.
Guru Gobind Singh told the "Khalsa" to keep kesh as a sign of saintliness, but what a saint is - is clearly defined in Gurbani, therfore simply keeping 5 ks without studying and following Gurbani is like wearing an army uniform without any military training.

If you do disregard this however, for whatever reason, you either think that you know more about god that god himself or you don't believe that guru gobind singh ji was God in the flesh, in which case you're simply not a sikh, and there's nothing wrong with that. You can talk about anything you want about cutting your hair and eating meat if you're not a sikh, the problem arises if people start suggesting that sikhism doesnt rlly say x or y when they know little to nothing in the first place.

someone could be wearing a turban and following all the 5k's, but then also completely disregarding the teachings of the guru's. Sikhi focuses on the internal well being and then external. I do however respect whether u chose either, because with a turban or not, sikhism is about internally understanding the lessons given by our guru's.

I'm sorry to say but i think You didn't get his point. It's about loving your body as it is, without worrying about what others think if you don't change this. If you cut your hair simply because you think you don't look good, that's a problem.
If you internally understand the sikhi then automatically will resulted in your external looks
A tad bit idealistic, it is one thing to agree from a sikh perspective that anyone could be a good person and express the importance of humility by understanding the passages of the likes of bhagat kabir ji who had this mentality of never thinking of anyone as being below you as it gives birth to haumai but to state that sikhism is all about "internal issues" is just not true and comes off as an attempt to say that no matter if you commit bujjar kurehats by eating meat, or cutting your hair, you can still be a good sikh, which simply isn't true. The standards for the title of "True Sikh" as maharaj describes are much more strict than simply someone who has taken amrit, but even by a sikh societal standard, you have to at least be someone that has taken amrit and follows rehat properly to even have the right to call yourself a sikh at all. Sikhism is about being a gurmukh through and through, and cherrypicking what you want to follow and leaving out what you find inconvenient while claiming vague things like "sikhism is about the inside, as long as a person's heart is clean.." etc isn't what sikhism is about, it's what being a manmukh is about.

Be Happy, external appearance isn't a requirement in order to be a Sikh. The definition of a Sikh under the Sikh Rehat Maryada is anyone who faithfully believes in
1. One God
2. The 10 Human Gurus & Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
3. All the writings/teachings of the Guru
4. Does not identify with any other faith
It says nothing about keeping hair or a turban. If we apply those strict rules you're talking about in the definition of a Sikh, then all of a sudden most Sikhs won't even be classified as Sikhs anymore.
The Turbanator who faithfully believe in guru teaching is a Sikh according to u that's totally right brother

Making following comments with utmost respect for Satpal Singh ji.
Problem is not 'keeping hair or not keeping hair'. Problem is the amount of importance given to the hairs. People assume they become Sikh by merely keeping hair and wearing turban.
If we are aatman not the body nor the mind then why so much importance to one body part? Cut it or not, major importance should be given to cleansing of mind and then transcending mind.
If hair is important then so is all other body parts. People eat all kind of junk in the name of being vegetarian which is even more harmful then meat. Ideal functioning of this body is vital for self realization.
I think learned persons and our sikh preachers should consider cutting hair to show the importance of cleansing mind and being nobel first.
Guru Nank told pandits the importance of mind control then wearing jenau (sacred body string). Same apply to Sikhs. "Maan nu bano phela, paag nhi".
Keeping hair and wearing turban was norm in India at that time. You can see various turbans worn by people across India. Only students and teachers used to keep chonti to distinguish them from others. Later pandits misused this getup. But orginal intention was different.
Don't make hair growing as if it belongs to Sikhs only and don't make Sikhism about keeping hair. Our gurus belongs to everyone in the world irrespective of appearance.
Very well said a person who has knowledge speaks like this .
I’m afraid this sounds like a very shallow argument for long hair!
It has nothing to do with maintaining ancient Indian/ Hindu Tradition
In fact the whole effort of Nanak and the following Gurus was to tell them to stop blindly following tradition... on the bank of the Ganges Nanak tried to splash water in the direction of his fields rather than follow the blind Hindu Ritual/ Tradition of trying to splash water towards their dead ancestors in the celestial world !!
It was to tell them to break blind traditions and realise the folly of their superstition
Again he has no idea of who and what the Buddha did, or taught or wore!
In the times when all Mystics and spiritual seekers grew long threaded hair ( the Jattadaris) and smeared their faces with ashes etc, Buddha deliberately shaved his head and refused to smear his face with ash ... this was to tell the people that the outward dress and appearance has little with the inside journey ...
both Nanak and the Buddha were reformers and had to get the people out of their blind superstition and beliefs .
My understanding of why the Sikh was made to wear a turban/ long hair ?
Because the Guru ( Gobind) wanted the Sikh to wear a dress and be seen as a Sikh from far... to stand out bravely , courageously and be ready to be seen and identified by the enemy
To tell the enemy
“ here I am ... dressed as a Sikh... kesh and kirpan and Kada ... I’m not hiding from you ... I’m not scared of you ... “
it was to send a message to the tyrant , I’m not going to run away or fear you anymore
I’m not scared ... and I will no longer accept your tyranny
I’m the sparrow who’s not scared to take on the hawk !
Thats such a beautiful reasoning....thankyou so much!!!
A very gentle reminder to those who are questioning sikh beliefs , passing racist remarks and spreading negativity.
What do you know about sikh religion ?Leave sikh religion alone . What do you guys know about ancient India ?
Do you guys even know that sikh gurus made sacrifices to protect Hindu faith , so they can practice their religion without any fear . Please go through Indian History and do have a look on what upanishads have to say on uncut hair .its my humble request .
The reason today's era is called kaliyug is because most of us don't know or have forgotten our origin and also don't know anything about spirituality.
The people who are saying that unshorn hair is not a requirement of being a Sikh are not arguing with the person in the video , they are arguing with the Guru. They should remember this fact.
The Guru said that his Sikh should accept the will of the Lord and remain natural , if you don't agree with what your Guru says how can you call yourself a Sikh ?
Harsimran Singh Bir, perhaps we misunderstood what is meant by natural. We mow our lawns, we weed our crops, we cook our food. Why do all that, just remain natural. You see how we cherry pick being natural as just applying to hair. Please don’t confuse tradition of keeping hair as requirement. The requirement only applies to Khalsa as it is specifically stated, the rest is just conjecture.

The best and most crisp answer to this question I've come across so far.
Based on the cocept of "letting your body go" why is nothing said about cutting nails? I am curious to hear your explanation.
Back in olden days everybody would work with hand and feet in the farmlands. While they work hard in farmlands their nails will automatically get cut. Those times there were no machines, everything was done by hands.
Now a days they need nailcutter to cut their nails because of everything is taken by machines itself.

It is also very easy to make an external appearance and grow pride with that look, so there are many aspects of it ... i am also assured that a person might be a big fashionable star but if he understands the naam inside him, hes a gurmukh inspite of his looks
Very well said..bhaji
Utter idealistic nonsense straight from dil saaf jatha.
First of all, Thank you for your wonderful teachings. I am still not sure about the hair thing. Why don't you see nails in the same way? I guess, for practical reasons. I see hair a bit in the same way. I don't mind wear a turban, but I would still want to have short hair underneath because it feels better. No one needs to see it. Anyway, I do respect your look and I find you attractive in your way but not completely convinced in the spiritual side of it.
We only cut the extra dead nails and if u cut the whole nail, it will bleed...Similarly, when we comb the hair, dead hairs get taken off. So cutting nails are like combing hairs. 🙏
Hi , nails have a very low cross sectional area but not in the case of hair . when you cut your hair they go into healing mode which affects your body nutrient value because your hair will try to achieve the desired length.
Growing Hair or nails is inviting bacteria in body.......it is really not practical. Its like you are in war and hiding in jungle with no resources.
@Sandy issar - Why don't you go bald .? You don't even know what you are talking about . Have you ever studied science ?. Please don't say dumb things over here . The bacteria you are talking about can grow on any length of hair whether short or long . Sikhs cut nails .
If you are talking about being practical then answer my question why do people worship idols ?? What is so scientific in it ?
@@13pinkrosethen you are also doing the same thing, bowing to your holy book and doing all rituals like an Ideol.
Hair is a part of tradition. Some sects keep it while some dont.It has just nothing to do with Spirituality. And yes, there were many medieval ideas in all sects. But for a true aspirant, following orders of the teacher must be the most important thing. As Swami Vivekananda said, one must test guru thoroughly before getting initiated.
"If you cut your hair and it grows back, let it grow. Your body is telling you something"... What about nails?
themax316 just like how dead hair falls out when you comb dead nails need to be cut too. Alive hair when is pulled hurts. Just like cutting live nail hurts. When you cut a dead nail it doesnt hurt one bit.
+Sukhraj Randhawa dead hair falling out is a natural thing....cutting nails requires a man made tool and is not a natural procedure in the context of what this man is saying.
themax316 the clause of hygiene is not to be forgotten
Moreover, Sikhism is practical... long nails are going to create many problems in day to day life
themax316 i can bite my nails and cut them like animals...or work in the field with my hands and they can shed in size by friction. We can go on and on...

After reading some comments I agree that there is no point keeping Kesh if you're just going to do bad actions but we are only looking at 2 possibilities here, someone with cut hair who is good and someone with long hair who isn't good. Its easy to judge this as a way of making a shortcut to "being a good person". What about having long hair and being a good person and having short hair but doing bad deeds? What looks the best out of these now?
For the Sikhs who are doubting the relevance of Kesh today stop looking for answers from other people, everyone whether they have Kesh or not will tell you what they think. Read Gurbani and understand the hukams of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and make your own decision, if you put effort into finding out this way im sure you'll make the correct decision!

I have always been, am, and always will be a Kes-dhari Sikh. I had a very hard childhood and often wished I had cut my hair; things have happened to me which I would not wish on anyone.
But I am now glad that I have always been Kes-dhari and have never tried to hide that I am a Sikh. Because I have lived through the toughest times as a Kes-dhari and now Anmrit-dhari Sikh, I am intellectually independent, mentally tougher, more emotionally mature, and more open-minded.
I have had your discussion with numerous Sikhs without Kes. I told them that I understood that many career and personal paths would be closed to me because I am Anmrit-dhari -- and I accepted the prices I have paid and will pay were sometimes very high. They have more professional success than I ever will have, yet they all said they envied me.
Think about that.

Nails are also a natural part of our body.. But we cut it when it grows... So what we should do?
Nails and hair are not the same even if you never cut your nails they would break into their natural shape on thier own.
It all depends on which part of the hair you’re referring to. The part of the hair found inside the hair follicle is alive. The shaft of the hair (visible part) doesn’t have any biochemical activity in it and according to dermatologists, is considered dead. The visible parts of your hair contains dead keratinised cells. Can you clarify...
No
I am Sikh. I cut my hair to shoulder length after leaving it to grow. I have osteoarthritis in my neck, longer hair is heavier and I struggle to lift my arms over my head to look after my hair.
It’s no one else’s business, to worry about what others do when it doesn’t directly concern you is to exercise your ego. Let the person be comfortable, you do not know their background and context.
I can still be a good person and connect to god without the hair
Hi.
Sikhism or any other religion is all about being human. Tunning with universe. It's a waste if you grow hairs but wouldn't able to grow your brain your higher self.
It's not mandatory. Nobody wants to clear this thing and nobody wants to listen.
It was a recognization of a sikh in battlefield. So that one can see them from far. They(Guru ke Sikh) used to be 40 versus 10 lakhs soldiers of opposition.
Sikh is all about khalsa ( pure) soul. Who respect humankind who respects others.
Hair and no long hair . A true Sikh is one who is pure, good human being, who served Langer, who respects everybody. Helps needy.long hair is only a tradition like other religion has their own traditions, dressing style and food etc. It is a recognization.
But one has to understand Universe. That God is one. That is true meaning of Sikh.
I hope I made my point clear.
P.S.- what this man in video trying to say is one can of course worship God (with or without long hair). But it was his point that there is no need to shave ,if it is going to regrow. It's growing in natural way. But it is itchy or for any good reason, you want to shave, then it's your choice. It has nothing to do with Gurbani, Guruduwara and good Sikh deeds.
It's just it is a recognization given us from Guru Gobind Singh ji. Sikh loves to keep them, following their teacher. They want to keep it as their tradition and roots. Everyone respects and love theie roots.
But of course there is no point in keeping long hair with bad heart.
Many regards

When we cut our hair, our body turns into a healing mode. The hair starts growing to achieve its desired length according to different bodies. People who cut their hair are actually growing their hair continuously till they die. When you do not cut your hair, it will stop growing after achieving its desired length. It does not grow continuously. And when it grows it also absorbs nutrients from your body.

I am sure they will select the girl with plain face.
This is their hypocritical stand
You can have a big beard unshorn hair, it's all show. Most of our "leaders" in Punjab have the same. Eg Badal etc, or look at your local Gurdwara committee. What matters is your character. You could be a terrible human with cut hair, keeping it won't make you spiritual and sikh all of a sudden. You're still the same person inside.
Sikhism is a religion, the 5Ks are a uniform. You can be a Sikh. 5ks won't make you transform what your mind inside is. Guru jis teachings will.
Agree
You will live your life by seeing bad people and their karm's but not good people with long hair...wow what a explanation
We all have our journeys, imagine if we didn’t have labels like Hindu, Sikh & Muslim. We just focus on what’s important, living in harmony with one another & nature. Acknowledging that we’re part of a greater being that no religious books can & never will fully explain. Focusing on doing the right thing & evolving & improving. I’m born a Sikh, don’t have any symbols of the Khalsa. But my beliefs of acknowledgment of our creator ( naam Japnaa) , charity in service or kindness ( wand chaknaa) & self reliance & not being a burden to society ( kirat Karnaa) are Sikh values. Maybe someday I’ll get to the point where I get to do the rigours of daily prayers followed by the appropriate actions then maybe I’ll get to be tranquil enough to wear the uniform of a Saint Soldier. In e meantime, I’ll do my best being a good human & Sikh ( seek & learn ) . We are one 🙏🏼
Nice thought Rajinder singh
"Sabh sikhan ko hukam hai, Guru Maniyo Granth" you don't even believe in Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj as our living Guru, also, no one is "born a sikh" everyone is initiated into sikhi upon taking amrit, before that, you are simply born into a sikh family, you are not actually a sikh yourself, and aren't until you do eventually take amrit. But from the nonsense you're talking about its obvious that you don't realise that god himself wrote the bani within Guru Granth Sahib Mabaraj and god himself resides within the bani. "Bani Guru, Guru Hai Bani" And you think you can understand God better than God himself? I highly suggest that before you spout nonsense like this, go listen to some kathaas and maybe even try reading through Gurbani and translations yourself.

Hair protect your aura! Head hair i mean! Thats helpful on spiritual path! But yes their are other ways too!
I think this is the difference and unique relationship between Sikh and Khalsa - Sikh is our umbrella term that encompasses all communities within it's realm (Nanakshahis, Nanakpanthis, Sehajdharis, hundladharis, kesadharis, Dadupanthis, Sufis historically, Kabirpanthis, Ravidassay, etc) and in this realm the main foundation are Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharajs 3: Kirat Karo Naam Jaapo and Vand Shuko. These are like the step 1a, 1b and 1c - the core of every Sikh and Khalsa - to become initiated by the Sacred Khanda, the Iron bowl and to keep Kes while adhering to the code of conducts brings in those conditions of maintaining saroop as our Guru has commanded therefore we obey our when we have chosen the Guru as our master. Everything is one, Chaar Varaan ik vaaran karouu, udasis and sunnaisis shaved their heads when joining their fold but were treated as an Ang of the Paanth before colonization. But when they became khalsa (as seen with the Nirmalay and Sevapanthis) they follow that maryada given to us by dasvah Patshah. Of course this all changed because of the results of colonization and the redefining of "Sikh" in the fervor of the Singh Sabha movement. Just some thoughts and exploration, Phul chuk maaf!
Sikh is not an umbrella term at all, and is quite extensively and specifically defined within maharaj's bani. To go down the route that claims Khalsa is in some way separate or just one part of it is very false. Dasve Patshah was god himself and he not only took amrit himself but passed on jot to Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj as our current Guru, the Khalsa wasnt just some warrior sect, it was an order to all Sikhs that they were to be initiated to unite all previous scattered denominations and sects under one complete identity, the Khalsa. Any people today that claim to be a part sikhi but have not taken amrit and do not follow the rehat properly do not qualify as sikhs. The point being here that the Khalsa after its formation is what Sikhi as a whole is defined as. Anything outside of that today can be classified outside of sikhi, not under it as some umbrella term. Yes these practices can be related to the origins of sikhism but to claim that theyre different forms of it is false.
After our death our actions will be judged in heavens and hells.

Reading Sikh poetry (The Guru Granth Sahib consists of poetry written by some of the Sikh Gurus, and many hindu and muslim philosophers) can be done whether we have hair or not....What does a bald Sikh do?....Do Sikhs not go bald?
I think this video still doesn't address a very important issue, which is convenience. The idea of vanity and insecurity of how others perceive you is an important point to bring up. However, cutting your hair makes it easier to manage, Yes, it grows back-- why is that a sign that you're not supposed to cut it rather than a sign that you can cut it and not worry that it won't grow back? It's typically quite easy for us to stay healthy and understand our body if we just listen to it. Going off of that theory, shouldn't it hurt when we cut our hair if we're not supposed to do it?
so will you discard truth if it becomes inconvenient Tahlia. How can we accept the truth of our situation if we cannot accept/love the truth of ourselves as a starting point?
Sorry, could you be more explicit? I'm having a hard time making the connection of what you're saying in relation to my comment. I mean no offense, I just don't understand.
Hey Tahlia, yes it does hurt. But we've lost touch with ourselves... We must be in tune with our natural forms in order to feel that. As a woman I was desentized having growing up shaving, waxing etc. When I kept my hair and did this again once, it was very painful. It hurts physically and emotionally. My hair is a part of me and my body. To remove my hair feels so unnatural now. Hope that made more sense.
Also as for inconvenience, do you honestly believe paying (financially and time wise) to alter our hair is better than just leaving as is? Cut hair is harder to tie up, can have loose ends, come into the face etc. Longer hair can easily be tied in a knot. Super convenient. No need to get a haircut. Super convenient. No need to worry about latest trends. Super convenient. No need to spend time plucking waxing shaving to meet social norms. Super convenient. Not to mention the countless benefits spiritually. Hope I did not come across too blunt. I've laid only facts and experiences in this comment. The rest is up to you to be aware of how it is society itself that has bred vanity and insecurity, not the other way around.
Satinderjit Kaur not too blunt, it was a conversation I wanted to have. :) I like to think I'm pretty in tune with my body. I'm try very hard to take more natural approaches with every element of my body-- from using exercise and food instead of prescription medication to using natural daily products as well as clothes. That being said, natural things cost money too. The economy is corrupt and that's the way it works. I don't expect that to be any indication of what is more natural or not. In terms of cutting hair hurting, I can see waxing hurting, and knicking yourself while shaving hurting, but how does cutting off your head hair hurt physically? If worried about not being able to tie it up and loose ends, can't you just cut it short enough that you don't have to deal with that problem of it getting in your face?
The symbolism inherent in not cutting hair or altering the body can be supportive and reinforcing of the mindset in Sikhi. However, the basic message is about a healthy self-acceptance and respect for nature and being careful not to fall into vanity. You can do what's practical for you so long as it doesn't promote vanity and self-aggrandizement or preoccupation with artifice and superficiality, which are hindrances to the spiritual path. If you are wrongly concerned about how you look to others then that too is a hindrance to self-realization.
This comment section is full of Hindus and Europeans, all giving their opinion regarding Sikh doctrine. Pretty silly.
That would be non-different from a European telling an Islamic community: "Pork is fine! It's just food; you can enjoy it!"

I don't really like the "Natural" argument for not cutting hair. If we leave our bodies as they "naturally" are, then using that logic why do we cut Nails? Or take a bath? What about people who have a disease? or deformation?
The nails that we cut are already dead, try cutting part of a nail that isn't dead and you will feel pain and its also hygienic. we take bath so we feel refreshed before doing naam/path etc and also that too is washing away dead skin cells. Thats my take, maybe Satpal veer ji can explain better.
It doesn't matter, you're still altering the body which was given to you. I am already aware why we cut our nails and take a bath, I was just addressing the stupidity of the "natural" argument.
The Turbanator hey brother you cut your dead nails not the whole nail.Similarly by using Kanga u remove ur dead hairs, don't cut it
The Turbanator by bathing too you remove your dead cell.If you bath it doesn't happen that you will remove a joint(interior) from its place.
ah i see, apologies. veer ji has another video you probably seen it too where he makes an argument that "why would you cut your hair if you are trying to connect to the divine". (ofcourse that applies to the ones who are trying to connect) i quite like both arguments because mostly people cut their hairs because they are scared of how they are going to be perceived in society and to be honest this is how i was too lol

If we keep our heart filled with only god then automatically follows the rest like keeping beard hair or cutting them.i love to keep but im nt,many reasons.i pray god to grant me the life to keep my hair and beard uncut in his name.
Please give me some feedback on the following:
It doesn't make sense to me, one can argue there is also a reason why you wear a turban, and it's not enlightenment! And you also cut your nails!
Having short hair and short beard, or no beard, is easier to clean and take care of, it's better to practice exercise as well. If we were really meant to be as we were designed we wouldn't be wearing clothes but running around naked!?
The ego never dies until the body dies, it's always there, why can't we understand the ego, make peace with it and create the best life possible for it?
Because if everyone would be enlightened and played a role such as yourself, there wouldn't be modern medicine, engineering, construction, etcetera; how would life be?
In certain aspects it would improve drastically, but there are certain benefits in exploring the rules of physics and nature, and having them work for you!
If the whole race focused on living enlightened, what bliss it would be, but also other life forms would erase us, bacteria and virus do not care if we are one!
Disease would kill us.
It's arguable that, because of the excellent health of the practices of a conscious being, its a lot harder to kill an enlightened being's body than an unconscious human, but the enhancements brought forward are important.
Depending on the culture of the area were you live, choosing consciously, one can decide if a certain trait needs to remain for the best of this human form, even though we do realize it's irrelevant in the end, for interactions with the world and living our character, it seems very important!
Letting your beard grow, using a turban and different clothes, speaking a different language - these are all culture traits, bricks of your house, ain't them anyway?
The self is completely void, so it shouldn't matter anyway...
I'm still working with my ego, but it is my interpretation that I have to give this character a good life and do what I can do...
We can't abandon our characters... we have to play the game! The arguments you used for the beard don't seem important in the end, but life should play it's character how is needed...
André Periquito André Periquito reading the first two paragraphs of urs, well if we dont cut our nails then i dont need to explain what happens, just search those people that have world records for never cutting their nails and u would understand why we cut our nails. on the other side, not cutting ur hairs dont bring any problems in ur day to day life, i have never cut my hair, beard ever, i never ever experienced any kind of inconvenience. Secondly, being enlightened doesnt mean u stop living life and start living in the woods and do nothing towards the progress of this world, medicine, infrastructure etc. Enlightenment doesnt tell u to stop contributing towards society, i think u are misguided there. Thirdly, saying ego doesn’tgo away is like saying there is no Ghee(purified butter) in milk, but its there. U have to take milk, make curd from it, then make butter from curd, then u can finally make purified butter from that butter, long long process, but if i just see milk and totally deny the presence of ghee in it then thats just my ignorance. Same way, if someone havent gone through years of discipline, meditation, controlling their senses, for them to say that ego doesnt go away or there is no other dimension than the physical one is also very very ignorant.
André Periquito brother there are always some usually very vocal people in every religion that love rules and like everything to be rigidly defined or copy without question and refuse to evolve. We Sikhs also have our share of them. What can we do? We have to put up with them as they are our brothers and sisters 😁.
I suggest you go to SikhNet and read the translations of the holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib or SGGS for short. It will give you insight into the spiritual teachings. The primary teaching being that everything in this entire creation/universe is ONE. It is connected to us and we are connected to it. How do we experience this ONENESS is by submitting to the will of this ONE. The debate heats up over how do we submit and some people hold very rigid views on the requirements, don’t cut your hair is a big one for some, but they have a long list of other things to make it a very daunting process. Some of us believe in keeping things simple and don’t buy into it but still consider ourselves Sikhs above all else to the dismay of the rule keepers!
André Periquito I will be glad to explain it to you. May I have your email ID so we can talk about it? I really don’t see any point talking about it here. Thank you
During the time of Krishna budh and Ram Ji, people used to have hair and beard, at that time if someone had committed the crime, he would cut his hair and beard. And he was ashamed to see himself in the world and then he used to go into the forest, before Guru Nanak Dev Ji, people did not cut body hair. There was a war in Mahabharata, everyone has hair on his head and beard, then Jesus came, he did not get hair cut.Sikhism says that it is wrong to change this idol given by GodHe does not find a place in heaven, which calls the creation of God wrong and changes his body to make himself beautiful.Follow the law of God, do not go against the law made by him
The argument posed by granthiji of some ancients/mystics/holy men having long hair doesn't make having long hair as the justification for Sikhism imo.
Naz Dhillon
“Let it go” is the example of mystics/holymen doing that. He is trying to neighbour the examples not give justification, after all its all down to you.
I listen to you, as I do to all Faith Traditions of our Great Subcontinent, with fervent respect, with a voracious appetite for spiritual wisdom and knowledge. Sikhism in particular commands deep admiration for its remarkably conciliatory basis.
I would greatly welcome the fundamental reason for long hair (given that cutting hair is the outcome of latter-day aesthetics)
What are the benefits of hair being nurtured in its natural state? The answer, please?
Felix Almeida the secular reason is it gives the individual a spiritual identity that is equal to their spiritual father - the Gurus. Collectively, it’s provides a sense of community and is an equaliser and an uplifter of the oppressed. So basically, it gives Sikhs dignity and sense of community cohesion despite being multi racial and ethnic in make up.
The spiritual reasons have been discussed - contentment and acceptance of God’s will and shedding the ego.
SS Singh Thank you for your reply.... content to contemplate
