Sweet! Love the dark, vivid colors, the music, and especially the animation, so different from what we're used to now. My niece loved the Madeline stories, and when she was about 3 years old, she and her older brother accompanied their parents to Paris. She was so excited--finally she would get to meet Madeline! She even had a Madeline coat and hat--and she looked adorable in them. Poor baby, she was heartbroken when she discovered Madeline wasn't real.
Madeline was one of my favorites when I was little. I loved the stories that were narrated by Christopher Plummer and the TV series in the 90s. But this short is amazing! The backgrounds are just like the book's illustrations. It's like they brought the book literally to life! Although, it isn't the same without Christopher Plummer's narration and I know the balloon part isn't in the book...but still, great work and adaptation!
I'm a child of the 90s, and I grew up with the Playhouse Disney show, as well as the books, live action film, and everything. This is the first time I've ever seen this, and to be quite honest, this is probably the best adaptation of ANY Madeline book. It actually *looks* like the book artistically and isn't trying too hard to appeal to "today's young girl" whatever the heck that term is supposed to mean. Beautiful.
I used to love madeline as a little girl, i even wanted a doll of her but never got one. The 90s series was great but this short is fantastic, Madeline is so adorable in it. Madeline will always be a great part of my childhood.
This cartoon somehow it was seen as a short during the Nickelodeon pre-schooler show "Pinwheel". Nickelodeon later had the UPA package for quite sometime (airing as a series called "Cartoon Kablooey") but they didn't have the rights to those until 1993 at the earliest at the same time "Weinerville" had debuted. I seen the 1989 version and the 1993 and 1995, 2000-2001 TV series.
That's also considering both this cartoon and the 1998 film are properties of Sony Pictures Entertainment... Columbia Pictures, as you can see at the beginning, was the distributor of the United Productions of America (UPA) cartoons at the time this was made.
The first book came out in 1939, the same year World War 2 started. Also for reference. 1945; the year World War 2 ended. The first Railway Series book came out. The book series that laid the foundation for the “Thomas and Friends” franchise
I can tell that DiC and Cinar must have used this short for some of the inspiration when adapting Madeline to animation (like the way they change scenes.) I still say Christopher Plummer was the best for narrating Madeline's adventures...
I never knew this came out before the 90s one with Christopher Plummer narrating. Interesting how the animation matches the book except to make Miss Clavell look less like a nun. I always assumed that the girls were in an orphanage run by the parish and Miss Clavell was a member of the sisterhood. It's my understanding that in French Miss and Sister can be synonymous.
This also seems to be where the pronunciation of "Madeline" (with the long "i" sound, to rhyme with "nine") originated... I know the DiC Madeline series treated the pronunciation of her name the same way! Usually "Madeline" is pronounced with a short "i" sound (as in, of course, "in," and also "pin" and "tin").
bill melendez, who later became best known as the animator of charlie brown & the peanuts gang, animated this cinema cartoon of madeline. at least, that's what IMDB says about him.
@sakunaruful That was just part of the way they were adapting the original book since I think everything in the book was nearly handled in the fashion or else they had to come up with a way to do those transitions the way they're seen here with them walking/dancing into place between sequences.
ive never seen this original madeline cartoon ive just seen the 1989 version O_O the colors are so dark in this i didnt know they had red colored dressed her and wait is miss clavel still a nun in this? i cant tell
2 people preferred the 1989 version (animation and color is better compared to 1952) The creators re-drew madeline (along with the other characters) with noses which were absent in this version and turned it into a musical show series
Yeah. He Left It At Madeline's Boarding School. When Ambulance Came. Madeline Is Still In His Arm With Blanket To Keep Her Warm. I Never See Her Crying Like That. And All Madeline's Friends Starts Crying Also
The original books were written AND illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans, and this cartoon animates his stills. Bemelmans' art was always vivid, but this digitisation of the film seems to have been oversaturated.
No, My Alarm Clock went off At 6 Because its Driving me nuts My Swim class starts during summertime And My Dad is going to work at Cleveland Are you being my friend or not? 3:36 Madeline woke the whole house up by her crying she got sititches on her stomach is her Appendix she rushed to hospital right way i had appendix Attack But she is so lucky to taken out
This video rocks big time even though it's old. 🎉
I never knew about this version. The animation looks so much like the illustrations from the books!

I remember seeing this as a kid in New York in the early 70s in the library on 16mm film. Until now, have not seen it in about 40 yrs!
- I've always loved Madeline. It just seemed so French and soothing.

What charm. The newer version brings back fond memories, but this is fantastic.

I've never seen this until now.
Great short, feels like the book.
I heard that this came with the 1998 Madeline DVD as an extra feature. 'Tis nice that someone uploaded this rare gem here on UA-cam.

I had no idea Madeline was this old.

Can you upload Madeline's Rescue (1950's)?
I don't know if I have the right cartoon version but did this one appear as a short on Nickelodeon's Pinwheel?
The original books were written AND illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans, and this cartoon animates his stills. Bemelmans' art was always vivid, but this digitisation of the film seems to have been oversaturated.
Why do Miss Clavel and the 12 little girls dance into place during transitions?
Poor Madeline. I Wish To Give Her A Hug. And Because Her Appendix is Hurting Her Stomach...... And She Got Stitches
