Another audio sync assignment with a beak character. I'm trying a different animation technique with more extreme posing and using Flash. It's a Kiwi confronted with it's mortality. Audio is from Troll 2, character design is mine.

The requisite animal walk cycle which is assigned in our first year of animation. There are three levels working here which is why it's so dark, which is a shame given how clean they are on their own; plus, the school cameras are old and abused. I spent most of my time designing the most attractively obese cat I could, the rest of my time went fairly straight forward, shooting on threes, twos a...

I never knew this came out before the 90s one with Christopher Plummer narrating. Interesting how the animation matches the book except to make Miss Clavell look less like a nun. I always assumed that the girls were in an orphanage run by the parish and Miss Clavell was a member of the sisterhood. It's my understanding that in French Miss and Sister can be synonymous.

The first book came out in 1939, the same year World War 2 started. Also for reference. 1945; the year World War 2 ended. The first Railway Series book came out. The book series that laid the foundation for the “Thomas and Friends” franchise

This also seems to be where the pronunciation of "Madeline" (with the long "i" sound, to rhyme with "nine") originated... I know the DiC Madeline series treated the pronunciation of her name the same way! Usually "Madeline" is pronounced with a short "i" sound (as in, of course, "in," and also "pin" and "tin").

The original books were written AND illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans, and this cartoon animates his stills. Bemelmans' art was always vivid, but this digitisation of the film seems to have been oversaturated.

I can tell that DiC and Cinar must have used this short for some of the inspiration when adapting Madeline to animation (like the way they change scenes.) I still say Christopher Plummer was the best for narrating Madeline's adventures...

This cartoon somehow it was seen as a short during the Nickelodeon pre-schooler show "Pinwheel". Nickelodeon later had the UPA package for quite sometime (airing as a series called "Cartoon Kablooey") but they didn't have the rights to those until 1993 at the earliest at the same time "Weinerville" had debuted. I seen the 1989 version and the 1993 and 1995, 2000-2001 TV series.

2 people preferred the 1989 version (animation and color is better compared to 1952) The creators re-drew madeline (along with the other characters) with noses which were absent in this version and turned it into a musical show series

bill melendez, who later became best known as the animator of charlie brown & the peanuts gang, animated this cinema cartoon of madeline. at least, that's what IMDB says about him.

Madeline was one of my favorites when I was little. I loved the stories that were narrated by Christopher Plummer and the TV series in the 90s. But this short is amazing! The backgrounds are just like the book's illustrations. It's like they brought the book literally to life! Although, it isn't the same without Christopher Plummer's narration and I know the balloon part isn't in the book...but still, great work and adaptation!

That's also considering both this cartoon and the 1998 film are properties of Sony Pictures Entertainment... Columbia Pictures, as you can see at the beginning, was the distributor of the United Productions of America (UPA) cartoons at the time this was made.

I'm a child of the 90s, and I grew up with the Playhouse Disney show, as well as the books, live action film, and everything. This is the first time I've ever seen this, and to be quite honest, this is probably the best adaptation of ANY Madeline book. It actually *looks* like the book artistically and isn't trying too hard to appeal to "today's young girl" whatever the heck that term is supposed to mean. Beautiful.

Sweet! Love the dark, vivid colors, the music, and especially the animation, so different from what we're used to now. My niece loved the Madeline stories, and when she was about 3 years old, she and her older brother accompanied their parents to Paris. She was so excited--finally she would get to meet Madeline! She even had a Madeline coat and hat--and she looked adorable in them. Poor baby, she was heartbroken when she discovered Madeline wasn't real.

@sakunaruful That was just part of the way they were adapting the original book since I think everything in the book was nearly handled in the fashion or else they had to come up with a way to do those transitions the way they're seen here with them walking/dancing into place between sequences.
