Where have you been? No diagnostic videos posted for many months. Great to see you back. I was surprised that you didn't spray penetrating oil on the threads before you loosened the bolts, and also that you tightened the wheel bolts clockwise, rather than doing the opposites, ie 5, 2, 4, 1, 3 on a 5 stud wheel. The torque wrench just showed the wheel bolts were tight, but the airgun might have over tightened them firstly. Electric cars aren't selling well in the UK, so it's good that you stopped making videos about repairing them. Great work, thanks.

I don't work on to many European cars right now, but watching you I feel more comfortable dealing with them. There is only one shop around here that works on them and since the owner passed away they haven't been the same. My customers that do own them are very patient and don't want anyone else working on there car including the dealerships in New Orleans 60 miles away. Yes definitely more videos on mechanical repairs, and diagnostics, maybe more videos per week, although I know it takes a lot of time especially with the great video quality you produce. Thank you for taking time to make these videos they are greatly Appreciated!

When I was 13 years old began working at my dads tire shop. We were taught always tighten lug nuts using a star pattern. Did that method change? I love the video. I learned how to remove and replace these type bushing with a specialty tool I didn’t know existed. Thanks for all you do Dan!

    • @MrSteve6343
      @MrSteve6343 5 років тому +3

Personally and I do not want to pick at the work yes I agree with the practice of as you put it a star pattern to tighten a wheel. It prevents the wheel snagging at an angle. I also think the snap on electric gun if you check in fact over tightens the wheel bolts even with only letting it dugga dugga a couple of times, they are far to powerful on bolts like that. The torque check at the end ought to have tightened the wheel bolts up more to the correct tightness. It only clicked due to it being at the correct tightness or beyond it already. From my experience it will nearly always be too tight. I would also recommend to the customer we did 4 wheel alignment although it was marked. If the customer declines then a premature worn tyre is not able to be blamed on us. Still enjoyed the content as always don't like to knock what you do just feel it is always good to get feedback whichever way it is.

    Another great video Dan!
Even if you think they are common or regular servicing items, because people do it differently, there's always something new to learn or new discovery to be made. For instance, on this video that plastic rotating brush fitment to clean the aluminium part was a really good tip. In conjunction with giving a once over regarding the importance of SST (Special Service Tool) in certain tasks will educate young mechanics and DIYers - extremely vital and very basic but often overlooked.
Many thanks once again for your excellent work and generosity in sharing the vital knowledge with us.

This reminds me from when I had to replace the rear wheel bearings on my E36 318i and getting one of the driveshafts out of the hub was the hardest part. Changing the bearings was the easy part. It always reassures me when the wheel nuts are torqued up properly with a torque wrench and is more important with alloy wheels.

I've seen countless mechanics/technicians over the years tighten bolts with the suspension hanging down in the unloaded position .
This is OK for the bush you've just replaced as it's more like a ball joint but not for the rubber type bushes which you know will fail again in a very short period!

With a steel joint in aluminum control arm I would use a heat gun to make removal and installation easier. Aluminum expanding much more than steel makes it very effective. In addition I would place the new bushings in a freezer to further increase temperature difference.

I don't know how well it will work on that hub since it's an alloy, but I've found that bushings tend to be easier to remove if you give the metal surrounding hole they're pressed into some gentle taps any time it starts to bind in order to break the friction buildup from corrosion. Works great on steel control arms at least.

Great video but one thing you didn't mention and is worth noting... You should always torque all the suspension bushing bolts on the control arms etc with the car at normal ride height. If you tighten them while hanging you are going to cause premature wear/failure of the suspension bushes. Anyway, I have just discovered your channel and I love the videos, keep up the great work!

Only one fault in this vid... Star pattern for tightening BMW 5 bolt wheels and ~216nm tightening torque. As a personal anecdote though, I'd clean the wheel and hub mating surfaces too, cause beemers like my E38 like to shimmy given half an excuse. Also finally subbed, your channel is absolutely invaluable.

That's a great job. I'll never work on a BMW, but it's interesting to learn about the task.

Great video - thanks for creating. Out of interest, when refitting the wheel, why did you not tighten the bolts diagonally, and it looked like the bolts were impact driven being the torque wrench setting as they all "broke" without visibly moving.

I work on German industrial equipment and when I comes to hammer they are a huge no no no no no they have jacking bolts, presses, or your hands for that stuff. I learned my BMW’s are the same way no hammering but the dodge and jeeps get a bigger hammer. Fire for the ford in the field lmao. Thank you for the video and educational.

Hi Dan, discovered your channel recently and in this video I noticed the Dutch plates; nice to see a quality channel from my home country even though if’s still 200km away from where I live. About this video, I own a similar model and I have yet to lift the rear to check, but I suspect the rose bush to be faulty and was hoping you could tell if I am looking in the right direction. Symptoms: after braking hard repeatedly to bed in new rotors and pads, my rear right wheel has a lot of negative camber and toe in; rear left as well but much less. Steering wheel is also off center, on acceleration the rear pulls to one side and on releasing the pedal it ‘snaps’ back... but drives straight otherwise without any noise or trembling. On visual inspection all other bushings seem fine, no play.

9,32 bushing mooves hard in the hub, i normally heat the outher ring so the bushing mooves more freely, just a little tip to avoiding your body from stress.

Great Video ~ when you marked the alignment bolt , it looks like you only marked the washer and the subframe of the car.. Is that washer attached to the bolt ? I'm very nervous about removing that bolt.. would it be best to make a straight line from the bolt , over the washer , and on to the frame?
What if I unbolt the swing arm from the other bolt rather than the alignment bolt?
