    James May also has a good suggestion about why Japan and Germany's car industries developed so quickly. After WW2 Japan and Germany were limited in terms of the types of military and aerospace projects they were allowed to pursue. So whilst the rest of the world decided to get into an arms race, Japan and Germany perfected the automobile.

      They learnt from American advisors and beat them in their own game of mass production and lean manufacturing. Especially Japanese. Now American and European companies send their representatives to Japan to learn about these concepts.

    It’s crazy how this car didn’t have a successful start, only to have so much appreciation years later. Even to the point where people claim it’s one of the best sounding cars ever made.
    I came across the car in a racing game called NFS Most Wanted (2012) and I said to myself “wait, Lexus made a super car?” Lexus and super car wasn’t something I would find myself saying in the sentence at the time, as I only knew the brand for making luxury sedans.

    The "LEAN" concept that Toyota runs still today is the reason why you can't get parts for their older cars. That's why people pay 2k for a used Supra MK4 headlight, cause you can't get anything for them. Theres a finite amount of stuff left out there, meanwhile you can get OEM parts for a Mercedes from the 1800's. So LEAN is not good from an enthusiast perspective, but it's great for inventory management.

Its a genius concept, dreamt up by Akio toyota, it is the first affordable FR sportscar with a boxer engine, inspired by the porsch 911 and the toyota ae86 and misunderstood by most Americans who only want to drive in a straight line and merge on the high way. In the new model, in the event of a front collision, the boxer engine detaches and slides under the the vehicle completely, making it much safer, and the ONLY car to get a perfect safety rating according to the new safety rating system in 2022. An incredible feat for a sportscar, which are usually not top safety competitors. All thanks to the misunderstood boxer engine.

      Yes, it is a Toyota, but many Supra fans still wonder why Toyota went into a partnership with BMW to build the new Supra. Why use a BMW chassis, engine, gearbox and even much of the BMW running gear in a Toyota sportscar? The obvious reason is saving money, but that kind of goes against the no-compromises philosophy Toyota has used on the previous Supra's and a re-engineered version of the famous 2-JZE would be a much more obvious choice than the BMW engine.
      Many of the die-hard Supra fans still think in terms of "go for broke or go home" and they still feel Toyota should have gone home instead of producing the new Supra this way. And as the Supra has always been a niche car with a very dedicated following, it kind of makes you wonder if Toyota did the right thing with calling this car a Supra.

      @@tjroelsmaIt's clear you got a bad understanding.
      Toyota did the right thing of partnering with BMW for the new Supra(MK5), especially for BMWs tried-and-true inline 6, the B58.

While the Supra MK4 literally came from the Lexus SC400/300 and the SC300 already had the 2JZ series with it...long before the MK4's existence.
      Y'all call ya'll selves "die hard Supra fans" yet literally don't know of those facts I told you, and the fact that the MK4 A80 Supra was a sales flopped car since it debuted(the MK3 A70 Supra is still the best selling Supra today). @@tjroelsma"Why use BMW chassis, engine, gearbox and even much gear in a Toyota sports car"?
      Lol, the Chassis was developed by both Toyota and BMW. Plus the generation (G29) BMW Z4 wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the Supra MK5. Last Generation's Z4 flopped bad in sales. And you mention the gearbox? The ZF8 Speed Transmission is literally in other cars from different manufacturers/automakers such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley, Charger and Challenger (from Dodge), Etc. And as for the engine, Toyota ain't gonna just spend funds to make a inline 6 engine for one car(2JZ was put in different applications. Not just the Supra MK4. And the 2JZ didn't even start in the MK4 , it started in the Toyota Aristo!). Therefore, the B58 passed the Toyota test which literally there's B58s rackin' over 800+ horsepower (or above) on Stock Bottom End.

      @Enthusiastlist 9 місяців тому +1

      @@tjroelsma Quite a few misconceptions in this reply so let's tackle them one by one. First off, BMW has nothing to do with the ZF8, it's the same gearbox that's used in Hellcats, Audi's, Jags, obviously BMWs including the Ms. It's widely regarded as the best automatic in the business in terms of reliability, strength & speed. Frankly it blows the door off any transmission currently found in a Lexus or Toyota.
      I can understand the gripes with co-developing the chassis with BMW as recent BMW's are notorious for feeling synthetic & over-hyper which the Mkv certainly does as well. Regardless it's still a good chassis with a ton of potential, another benefit to it is it's very light for a modern chassis.
      The last thing I want to say is there is no path where Toyota "redesigns" the 2JZ as it's an ancient engine architecture with almost zero thought to emissions or fuel regulations & if there is such a thing as a redesigned 2JZ it would look something like the B58, which has proven over & over to be super stout. I mean seriously those engines are putting VR38 level power numbers on stock rotating assembly/block for half the price. The B58 is also considered as quite possibly the most reliable engine BMW has ever made.
      If you actually take the time to read about the B58, it's pretty interesting. The block is a closed deck AluSIl from their diesel i6 & the rods/crank are also very similar to that of the diesel engine (hence why they're known for taking sooo much power.)
