It was very calming. I came to love it. The walls seemed to disappear & feel more expansive. She inherited a kitchen w/ 50s pine slab doors, sponge paint impression tile (w/bright white & light cool green). I see people who think painting grey is safe, thanks for reminding everyone that is not true. Also loved, "it's not what you like, it's what suits the room." So going to use that!!!!
My in-laws always paint their walls cool greys. They get decent sun, but they use white lights at night. Even though they have fancy furniture (in whites and greys), I always feel cold when I go into their house; it's industrial or sad-feeling.
For some reason this has become very popular recently. My partner and I are trying to buy a house and we keep finding recently remodeled homes where everything (walls, floors, tiles, cabinets) are GRAY. I am not willing to pay extra money for a house that was remodeled if I am just going to have to do it again :/
“Modern” interior design has become the cheapest, and most popular style to use in homes. Chrome fixtures have been cheap for a long time, white paint even more so, and gray wood would hide imperfections of cheap wood flooring when it was a stain job rather than a factory made laminate. In a room with lots of sun/huge windows, a house in this style would truly glow, but there’s rarely a home that has a single big window in the first place. The result is that people want a certain aesthetic but can’t execute it properly bc of cost limitations.
Years ago when I rented my very own office space, and the walls were papered, and the paper was falling off, I stripped off all of the remaining paper and painted the walls. It was a space with 4 rooms in 500 square feet, to be used for families (in danger of losing their children) having meetings with professionals working with their cases. I wanted the space to be inviting and comforting. I worked with the ba gua (not being an expert) the best I could and used the principles of Feng Shui to my best ability. I ended up painting the "lobby" space, where people first walked in, that deep brown-purple. I thought it was brown; no. It was dark purply brown. The meeting room ended up being painted sage green. The smaller meeting room with a round table, dark spruce green. For my office with my desk, printers, computers, filing cabinet and storage, I chose an odd yellow-green-gold color called "Anjou pear." I was also working with Native families, and wanted to honor the colors of the four medicines: sage, cedar, sweetgrass, tobacco. I was so happy then when people walked into the office and looked around and said "oh, it feels SO GOOD in here!" -- not realizing the energy behind the space.

Piece of great advice: No red hue in the bathroom. I can't count high enough to tell how many times my hearth stopped because reflection of light made my privates look red.
@@helenanilsson5666 I'm guessing because it always seems like you have issues with your stomach. But correct me if I'm wrong. I've never seen a yellow toilet.
I have always leaned towards the "earth" tones for my home and accented with the "woods" tones. For me, it's always felt warm and homey. Therefore, I want to be in those spaces. I wonder if there is a psychological reason why people lean towards certain colors...my best friend always goes towards the browns and blues...no matter what home she lives in, she redecorates to those colors. It's funny that our houses are so different, yet we are so much alike
one psychological aspect I'm personally familiar with is that warmer brighter and more saturated colors usually draw people who are undersensitive (or hyposensitive) to visual sensory information, and cooler darker and paler colors usually draw people who are hypersensitive, like me (I'm autistic and have adhd, many of my audhd friends are on the other end of visual sensitivity)
I would love it if you could demonstrate seasonal color. Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. My theory is that color choices can incorporate and also blend beautifully when done with the scenery outside. My theory is also, if the home you're designing has a longer season (out of 4) like maybe a longer Winter, then those are the seasonal colors that should be considered first. In that way, the design honors the longest season, meaning the home will be harmonious more often than not. Your analogy and description of everything you're teaching us is top, top tier. Keep on. Thanks!
There's one room I spend a lot more time in, in winter, because of the fireplace in it. I really do need warm colours on the walls... I currently have a cool blue.
In my apartment I have white walls, which are stark when the overhead light is turned on. However I almost never use the overhead light, and the lamps and fairylights I have cast warmth onto the wall. So at night the walls look like they're a warm stone and the 50+ indoor plants also give that hygge feeling. It's so nice and cosy yet natural feeling. And then for home decor I have a couple of artworks with brown/orange/red tones, and my soft furnishings are mainly shades of muted green with a few cushions for a pop of color.
Example of using black to feel cozy in a bedroom: (We're both sensitive to light, get migraines, and love water.) My sister painted her bedroom walls black, with one third of one wall painted floor to ceiling with 7 muted stripes in the colors of the rainbow (balancing the off-center window on that same wall). Ceiling remains white, for overhead airiness and indirect light. Kept original brown-blond door, trim, window, closet, floor (new remnant of gray carpet used as large rug in center of room). Cream leather armchair, gray comforter, oak dresser. She hung a few pieces of her favorite geeky art in various sizes to balance shapes and weights. It's cozy, yet feels bigger than the room's measured dimensions.
@@violetmoon2552 - that sounds lovely! I've also used 'strong' colors for living spaces and really loved them. Prior to having that space I'd rented a lot and had a strong aversion to 'primer white' that most rentals in the US have.
I used to have the corner around my bed black, including a triangle on the ceiling to give it a cave-like feeling. Never slept better! Now I have a huge pride Flag on the wall and a Tapestry on the ceiling that represents the land of dreams to me and the feeling is very similar. Would also go black again but the paint is too expensive rn
This is the best video ever on choosing colors for paint. I found myself searching for it again; the color comparison in different lighting is so helpful!
I wish I could show you my home. When we picked paint we went color happy. My favorite part is that we painted the ceiling a sky blue to help calm the rooms, but if we don’t point it out you would never know.
@@Kathywake23 Like light sky blue. Just far enough away from white that when you look at them next to each other its very obvious that its defiantly blue.
@@lebre. Yeah, Western homes are not usually facing a particular or primary direction as in many Eastern residences, so it's a bit harder to find the right space for colors and objects 🙂 Definitely appreciate all of your videos!
I don't advice on compass Feng Shui(which is the one that has to do with directions and kua numbers) but I talk about form and environmental Feng Shui, which is less about the direction, but the actual light and atmosphere you get in the room, which is always different. For example, a room facing south is generally bright, so you'd choose cooler, dimmer tones, but if there is a big building in front blocking the light, it will feel dark and cool and so you go for warmer, lighter tones,. Hope that makes sense!
I have my bedroom with burgundy walls, and Carmel colored wood furniture and curtains, and some white accents (ceiling, trim, shelves, etc.) It ties into the rest of the house which is mostly earth tones, though we have a burgundy accent wall in the dining room. Much of the pallet is very rich and warm neutrals.
What do you have to say about Pastel Colors? I don't think that's an official term, but when painting with pastel, we're usually limited to a specific color palette which feels somehow warm and friendly. It has a lot of earthy colors too and nothing too bright or grey.
My boyfriend and I chose to have mostly white walls & have one accent wall. The living room has a beautiful mossy green (my favourite colour) 💚 and the bedroom had a really nice purple (his favourite colour)💜
This is one of my favorite videos, and I have rewatched it multiple times because there is SO much information on how color can impact a space. Cliff, can you do more videos on colors (and maybe shapes)?
Thank you very much for this lesson.. I needed these information.. it's a hall new color theory and color wheel 🤩 .. I looove the way you show the effect of light with the lamps, very easy and efficient .. this can be used during the work or to explain to clients how to choose the best color that serves their needs and wants.
❤ thank you for your explanation! I find your videos very educational, interesting and I love your humour. I'm currently reorganisating my house, swapping rooms around and I'm finding inspiration on your channel.
My home has a black wall in the livingroom, very dark purple in the spare bedroom / laundry / dining (multifunction) room, dark green for the kitchen and then a light green and dark mahogany in my bedroom. I find dark colour makes me feel more secure and safe.
I added solid red countertops to my very white/grey/metal kitchen (in the sw corner) and suddenly I actually wanted to spend time in there. Kind of important when you have 6 mouths to feed 5 times a day.
Loved this video. I looked into Fung Shui years ago and read that each person in the household may be a different element and to organize and decorate to complement those elements. I'm fiery. Every culture... literally. Every where I turn Im some how a bull and a fire. Lol Im hot tempered, easily fatigue, and quickly frustrated. I over stimulate quickly as well. I burn hot but get over it quickly. Im also a ginger. So, I was told to use Metal or Wood (to ground) to complement or settle down my chaos and rage. Is there truth to that? I will keep digging through your videos. We have a lot to figure out. My youngest son really wants a Candy Apple red room... Im struggling. Lol It'll be our first owned home, and I can paint it later... but it's red! There are many types of finishes for paint... are there any Feng Shui ideas or thoughts of glossy versus matte?
This is hilarious to me 😂 I’m also ginger and I have fire in other aspects too, but nowhere near as much as you. I relate enough that I find it funny but not so much that I feel called out haha I wonder if red reminds him of you subconsciously? I don’t even get along with my mother but I always include blue and white in parts of my home where I feel like I need/want calm and always in a particular aesthetic, it’s my mum’s favourite style. Thanks to my dad she only got to decorate this way a little bit, mostly in places she wanted to feel like hers, so it was never the main style of the home but I somehow picked up on her preference and replicated it in my home!! I didn’t even make the connection until she came over. My mum was so happy when she saw the blue and white in some parts of the house and told me all about how much she loves that style. I hope that one day she’ll actually get to use it!
I have an entire wall in the middle of my apartment that is a deep dark red color, and I think it looks pretty awesome honestly with the furniture and room layout, I wonder what you would think about it!
For "blue representing wood", also consider that pre-Mandarin Chinese languages did not have separate words for green and blue, and might have skewed their perception as a result. Ao is the historical word for green and blue in Japanese; more recently Japan has officially introduced midori for green, keeping ao for blue. Older Japanese people have a form of blue-green perceptual blending, possibly as a result of using the same word for both colours, and their "green" traffic light looks quite blue to Westerners. Papua New Guinea has used the same word for green and blue for centuries, and many cannot accurately discriminate between the two colours.
I bought a blue wool sofa. It is the focus of my sitting room and a colour I immediately feel comfortable with. An azure blue I’d use explain it. The Turkish carpet on the floor picks up that blue and all feels very harmonious. The wall paint is irritating as it’s a white but with a definite grey tinge - I really find it right. The walls here were also panted white but when the lights were on it became a warm & mellow colour/. I have quite a few plants which I feel balance out the colour palette. a Great video, but I know that I wouldnt use any colour which was not immediately to my taste….
Just bought your book! What color is healing for a bedroom? Please do a book on colors and corresponding to shades and partner with a paint company ❤❤❤❤❤
We have lots of natural light, but the walls are painted polar white and it always feels cold. The artificial light is also very white-blue tinted so at night even colder. I dream of painting the walls a bit more beige-y and warmer :D I understand why so many old people like very yellow-tinted walls and furniture. Maybe they're not so aesthetic for IG photos but they feel warm and comforting to be in.
You r videos are so very helpful. I try to use a combination of Feng Shui and intuition when choosing placement of furnishings and colors. ???Are there certain best colors for different rooms? ??? You did talk some about how different colors give evoke different feelings. ???maybe you could do a video just on colors and moods? Thank you for these helpful videos.
Thank you so much for this feng shui colours presentation. It suddenly brought it home to me why I find Japanese/Chinese/Korean colours so alien, even though I love lacquer red and the colour of ceramics, while I love the colours used in Tibet or latin America. Please do not be offended: I really admire what you have done here, and it was wonderful that it clarified my reaction to colours to that extent. Also, the way you use lighting is...very enlightening!
This is excellent, thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! This deserves more views:) One question: You say that choosing tones depends on how cool or warm a room is or if there is a lot of a certain element in there. When saying this, are you mostly referring to the kind of lighting (natural vs artificial) or are you also referring to the tones found in the decor of the room?
not a feng shui expert but im an artist so i know color theory and i’m a relatively good interior designer (…in the sims [and to be fair, my bedroom]) you should pay equal mind to both unless one is harder to change than the other. if you can afford to replace all the decor but you can’t change the fact that there are a ton of windows, you design around the light. if you’re on a furniture budget but you can move around, add, or remove light fixtures and curtains, you design around the objects. designing around the objects you have (or want!) is usually the better plan as you can change lightbulbs and lighting fixture positions to change the warmth of your lighting!
I looove grey. But lately have been going for greys with some brown tone. Like a taupe. I collect anime figures and dolls and they are very colourful. My favourite colour is pink and I love pastel colours. So I like having neutral base with my furniture and walls. etc. They are all white or grey. I live in a hot climate so Im happy for my room to LOOK cool
What is the name (or Industry-Tone-Label) for the 2nd Blue from the Right (the one that literally turns grey under yellowish light)? It reminds a bit of "Taubenblau" (Dove-Blue in german). Also, i am wondering about other colors that radically change their appearance - or let's say "feel" - under different lighting. If you have the time and know some colors that are famous for that behavior, please consider making a clip. Nice work!
I appreciate all your teachings all the time, now when your space has very little light coming in due to tiny windows what color would you advice, I for one love bright colors like yellow, pink etc. please advice , am female by the way.
I had to brighten my screen to full, so its more dramatic when you do your own dimming and brightening. Can I ask what kind of light bulb you're using? It looks a little fluorescent to me. Great explanation of color!
thanks for the video! you've helped me optimize my spaces so much since i found your tiktoks! color is hard for me since my apartment has earth-toned carpet and walls that look even more orange since we dont get much sunlight. im afraid to add wood tones because the contrast might be too high. what element would best balance it out?
My fiancé started out wanting all white walls, because that’s what he knew from home. I on the other hand grew up with yellow walls in my bedroom and somewhat white wallpapers with various colourful imprints. Our compromise: Our bedroom is light grey with a turquoise accent wall, our living room has orange-y beige walls all around, the kitchen has white cupboards but a colourful wall behind it. Using some form of white is okay, but you have to give it a splash of colour - either by using a light version of another element or by filling the space with furniture and decorations that make the room feel lived in.
Do you have advice for painting a living room that gets little natural light? We want to brighten it up and make the space feel more open. Was leaning toward white of some sort - thanks!
I’ve read painting outside front door 🚪 facing south a fire color ( mine is currently black ) I’m not a fan of Red but thought of Robust Orange by Sherman Williams ( HGSW6628) would that be close enough to still be a fire color? Please and Thank you. 😊
My room is medium purple (like the one on the centre) and the furniture is cherry-wood colour and white ceiling....I'm planning to change it for green and beige and paint some plants in the main wall...do you think it is a good idea? (Keeping the same furnitures)
only if you want the furniture to stick out. it’s not a BAD thing for it to stick out, but eyes are going to be drawn to those reddish-brown tones. i suggest if you want to downplay it, you introduce as many yellow-orangey tones alongside the green and beige as possible, like painting your plants in little terracotta pots! also if you keep any real plants, also put those in terracotta pots! as a green lover, i support your endeavor to green-ify your room
I bought BRIGHT orange and a cream color that matches! I’m so stuck at the moment I’m wondering how to contract furniture and maybe do a design on one wall
You have a blog post that says not to have a blue kitchen because it brings in too much water, but here you say blue is wood and water is black. I'm so confused!
Hello! I have a led lightbulb that changes color sooo what do you recomend in this case? Cause i kinda want a light blue greyish wall but whats the point if i can actually change the lighting??? I dont know
I have a color question. We have a house where ever single room except the bathrooms, have massive picture windows with views of Green and yellow Fields in spring and a 180° panoramic view of the ocean. Oh also we live in Scandinavia so much the same weather as the UK. What color grey should I go with? Thank you. Btw I love yellow and blue. Those two are my actual favourite colours.

If Todr, ,my and my bf are painting our new apartment (bedroom, living/dining room is 1 room, and an art studio.) our favorite colors are green and purple. Help? My boyfriend wants the bedroom purple. It would be relatively light and I think if any room has to be purple the bedroom is the best option but do you have any recommendations(he wants it an unmistakable shade of purple so nothing that will read gray or white)? Also we have an art studio and I’m trying to decide on a color. I’m thinking of a cool white? Or a cool light green? I love green and I want to grow as an artist so I feel as if it could sew the right intention into the room by painting green but I’m worried it might interfere with my color choices in my paintings by affecting the light in the room? Last question, is there a color you’d recommend for a living and dining space? We were also thinking of a light green because it is comforting and relaxing? It’s our first time painting a living space so I’m trying to do a lot of research. Your time and response is much appreciated!

one psychological aspect I'm personally familiar with is that warmer brighter and more saturated colors usually draw people who are undersensitive (or hyposensitive) to visual sensory information, and cooler darker and paler colors usually draw people who are hypersensitive, like me (I'm autistic and have adhd, many of my audhd friends are on the other end of visual sensitivity)
I can't wait until your book comes out! I really like all your tips on Feng Shui.
is there any book?
How 'bout now?
I love my black bedroom ❤️..its elegant and relaxing.
That sounds brilliant! Sweet dreams! 🏳️🌈
The extra attention to windows & natural light will kick off a migraine for me. Muted, cool tones seem to be the way to go - for me at least.@@mdklzz
This is the best video ever on choosing colors for paint. I found myself searching for it again; the color comparison in different lighting is so helpful!
Can you make a video on what colours to use in different rooms (bedroom vs. workspace etc.)?
personal preference i think
I love how simple your channel is. To the point- and you explain everything so well ❤️👍👏👏
I wish I could show you my home. When we picked paint we went color happy. My favorite part is that we painted the ceiling a sky blue to help calm the rooms, but if we don’t point it out you would never know.
Like a white with blue undertones or a really light blue?
@@Kathywake23 Like light sky blue. Just far enough away from white that when you look at them next to each other its very obvious that its defiantly blue.
Email him the room im pretty sure hes gonna make a vid on it!!!!

This is great info, Thanks! It would be great to see which colors should face each direction, especially in western design. Again, great videos!
Yes yes yes I was going to ask the exact same question 👌😊
@womaninwood9177 Kinda between millennial and gen z, I think.. I don't really waste my time thinking about that xD
Not a lot of people realize that green and purple are opposite hues, so they contrast nicely with each other :)
This is one of my favorite videos, and I have rewatched it multiple times because there is SO much information on how color can impact a space. Cliff, can you do more videos on colors (and maybe shapes)?
amazingly informative.
Light Teal is now my new fav colour to paint a room after seeing this. ( very light but with hints of blue and green )
Mine too!
Wow I feel like I just attended an entire lecture. So interesting!! Thank you ☺️
I have a black bedroom. I love it! It's relaxing and elegant.
You need to do a lot to balance out negative energy. Stay positive.
I have broken every rule in this video and have no regrets.
Thanks for your videos!! I just wanted to point out that advice related to north/south-facing homes will depend on which hemisphere you are in! ;)
I added solid red countertops to my very white/grey/metal kitchen (in the sw corner) and suddenly I actually wanted to spend time in there. Kind of important when you have 6 mouths to feed 5 times a day.
Five times a day!
Thank you for putting this video together. I love color and learned some new things here like how much blues change in warm light!
Thank you! Getting more into Feng Shui and your videos are my favorite
I relate enough that I find it funny but not so much that I feel called out haha
I wonder if red reminds him of you subconsciously?
I painted my whole bedroom in a deep dark red. It looked fabulous and made it easy to take an afternoon nap in when the curtains were closed.
I have an acent former chimney wall in the red he advised against. I love how warm it feels.
You are so radiant ✨️ thanks for sharing 💛 🌻
this and you are so theraputic. i appreciate the lesson. im sure ill watch it it heavy rotation. 🖤to u and ur generations💙
I dream of painting the walls a bit more beige-y and warmer :D
I understand why so many old people like very yellow-tinted walls and furniture.
Another great video Cliff 👍
Thank you!!!
I love this. It’s like martial arts and tai chi. It’s about the idea of the element not in the literal sense.
Hi Cliff, love this video, I learned a lot. I wonder if you have any tips for dealing with mirrored sliding closet doors
Loved this information!!!
A show on what rooms are best for which direction and colour would be awesome
This was incredibly helpful and really changed my mind about a few things.
I would binge watch more feng shui tutorials for personal study, and I would binge watch your feng shui demonstrations (or tiktok videos)
Your videos changed my life😭😭😭Thank you ❤❤❤
This is excellent, thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! This deserves more views:) One question: You say that choosing tones depends on how cool or warm a room is or if there is a lot of a certain element in there. When saying this, are you mostly referring to the kind of lighting (natural vs artificial) or are you also referring to the tones found in the decor of the room?
not a feng shui expert but im an artist so i know color theory and i’m a relatively good interior designer (…in the sims [and to be fair, my bedroom])
you should pay equal mind to both unless one is harder to change than the other.
if you can afford to replace all the decor but you can’t change the fact that there are a ton of windows, you design around the light.
if you’re on a furniture budget but you can move around, add, or remove light fixtures and curtains, you design around the objects.
designing around the objects you have (or want!) is usually the better plan as you can change lightbulbs and lighting fixture positions to change the warmth of your lighting!
Amazing! I love the video - and I feel like I'll never be proficient enough to decide on this myself 😂😪🤷♀🙋♀
What do I do to balance out mismatched furniture (mismatching shade of brown)
In a rental place where you can't change the space too much
Hey Cliff! How does the personal element influence the elements you choose to design your home?
I looove grey. But lately have been going for greys with some brown tone. Like a taupe.
I collect anime figures and dolls and they are very colourful. My favourite colour is pink and I love pastel colours.
So I like having neutral base with my furniture and walls. etc. They are all white or grey. I live in a hot climate so Im happy for my room to LOOK cool
Taking notes for designing in the Sims 4.
Wow… so fascinating!!!
Nice work!
I love these more in depth videos
Any advice on which colors for every room? For istance, I have the best sleep in a pink room... 😊
Our compromise:
Our bedroom is light grey with a turquoise accent wall, our living room has orange-y beige walls all around, the kitchen has white cupboards but a colourful wall behind it.
Using some form of white is okay, but you have to give it a splash of colour - either by using a light version of another element or by filling the space with furniture and decorations that make the room feel lived in.
I would love to know more about black fireplace positions. What about in the middle of the house?
I just found your content and I love it ❤️. Got a new subscriber. Please upload more videos.
Do you have advice for painting a living room that gets little natural light? We want to brighten it up and make the space feel more open. Was leaning toward white of some sort - thanks!
Thank you for this informative video. 😊
I’ve read painting outside front door 🚪 facing south a fire color ( mine is currently black ) I’m not a fan of Red but thought of Robust Orange by Sherman Williams ( HGSW6628) would that be close enough to still be a fire color? Please and Thank you. 😊
it looks like a beautiful color!!
Learning so much!!! Thank you
Did not expect the blue to change so, so much under yellow light!!
These videos are very interesting, thanks 😊
Could dark greens or blue greens also be water or is that still wood?
It's interesting that there's no word for the light whitey pink in English, in German it's Pink for magenta+white and Rosa for red+white
We call that color rose in English.
That’s peach, like the colour of the fruit skin, or rose, like the flowers petals
Pink Russian: a milky rose pink.
I bought BRIGHT orange and a cream color that matches! I’m so stuck at the moment I’m wondering how to contract furniture and maybe do a design on one wall
Cliff, what about floors?
Black floors?
You have a blog post that says not to have a blue kitchen because it brings in too much water, but here you say blue is wood and water is black. I'm so confused!
Very interesting video
my walls are white and very messy, i dont really have the option to paint them so what can i do
(Very bright white walls + white light is overwhelming
WOW this was so interesting!
So interesting, helpful and inspiring! Thanks!
Is there a book I can read about this stuff that has pictures of rooms and more in-depth reasoning behind which colors are good for certain rooms??
Hello! I have a led lightbulb that changes color sooo what do you recomend in this case? Cause i kinda want a light blue greyish wall but whats the point if i can actually change the lighting??? I dont know
When I will build my house i will contact you for sure .
Thanks for the video! Love the light green in the back. Would you know the paint color? Thanks
What if you want to paint a room rainbow?
I live in the Southern Hemisphere, my bathroom is in the South East corner, is it wood, earth and fire?
My bedroom and balcony are in the North West, are they metal and water?
Thanks!
White is all the colours added. When it is split by a water droplet it creates the rainbow.m
*tldr autocorrect
What did you decide to go with in the end?
Great channel! Thank you!
