2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid | The Minivan With A Plug

  • In some ways Chrysler is downplaying the “plug-in” part of the Pacifica PHEV, but that strikes me as funny since this is one of the best PHEVs available in America today. It’s roomier than just about any crossover in America, more efficient than a Highlander Hybrid and will save you enough cash every year to take your family on a mini-vacation. What more is there to love?

    I've had one of these for about two weeks. Except for a 50 mile round trip, I've driven on almost exclusively on electric. The kids absolutely love it. I also have a 2014 Volt, so on a few days when I've expended the electric range on the Volt and still had some driving to do, I've taken the Pacifica to avoid using any gas for the day.

      @@rimonzaky5578 are you referring to the fact that the engine kicks in and sounds louder than running on electric? Yes. It's weird going from all electric to an engine run on gas. You are driving effortlessly quietly, then it switches and sounds like a monster being woken up under hood. Everything about this care takes getting used to. From the dash board display, plugging in every night, to forgetting to check to see if you have enough gas. 😄

    Oh don't tell the American public that mini-vans are the better option over SUVs and CUVs for families. They need to spend 20 grand more for a full size SUV and wrap their negative equity into their 84 month payment. Got to look cool at the school drop off line.

    Good overall review. You kept referring to the sunroof as Dual, when in fact it is a Tri Pane sunroof. The middle and rear are fixed pane while the front pane has tilt to vent and fully open capability. I do own the 2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited S and as a driver who typically goes 20k miles/year, my gasoline consumption has reduced by 66%. In California, gas averages @ 4.50/gallon so the savings are huge.

    I am amazed that you can read our minds when you compare this car to VW Atlas, Kia Telluride, Toyota Sienna, Ford Transit Connect, Honda Odyssey, etc. That is exactly what is on my mind.

    Great review as always, Alex. Your points re minivan advantages, especially the Chrysler Pacifica, are well taken. But I think it's a losing battle. My wife and I owned a Mazda MPV AWD for several years. It served us well and once managed to extract itself from deep snow in a ditch on a deserted logging road in the Cascade mountains. Probably saved our lives. When we replaced it in 2012, however, my wife opted for a KIA Sorento crossover for a number of reasons. The most critical was the higher driver's seat and the associated better visibility in the Sorento. In speaking to others I've found that to be a common sentiment among women. And contrary to conventional wisdom it's the preference of women for SUV's that has dealt the most serious blows to minivan sales.

    Yup, we love out 2017 PacHy. It's the best and we go months without buying fuel. Great review Alex, I especially liked the cost comparisons at the end. When I look at the numbers I always wonder why people bother with the gas versions since they don't make sense but I figure people just might not know that the better plug-in hybrid version is available.

      Hello Mike, I live in Toronto, I calculate in liters and kilometers.
      What is full gas capacity, how many kilometers do you get for full tank, using gas and battery. Just battery how many kilometers would you get

    • @mikeybthepilot
      @mikeybthepilot 5 років тому +3

      Jack Ryder hey, I’m in Ottawa! I don’t know the exact numbers off the top of my head but a full tank is something around 50L or about $60. The electric range we get is about 50km depending on how you drive (we’ve gotten as much as 60km on city streets, less on highway). The gas range is the normal 500+km or whatever.
      The plugin hybrid is just as capable as the gas version but since most trips are less than 50km in a given day you end up buying way less gas. We buy gas every few months instead of every week or so. I haven’t bought gas for our van since June!

    Please review the new 2021 Pinnacle model that is coming out. If this 2019 is an A plus for cabin noise, the Pinnacle has laminated front side glass and windshield and they say they sealed the cabin better. I bought a Kia K900 and it is the best car I've ever owned. Alex on Autos spurred my interest in it due to him saying it was his top pick for luxury sedans. My main trigger for buying it was it's super plush and cushy ride and it is only a few decibels louder than a Rolls Royce Ghost (as per Motortrend magazine). I like Alex on Autos reviews because of his attention to meaningful details that people like me want to know, like if the upcoming Pinnacle model will have a power tilt telescopic steering wheel, which is nicer to me than any minivan vacuum.

      Was 2017 the first year of the hybrid version? Most car manufacturers will have issues with the first year of any new model car. Even second year. It's why you lease and not out right buy new cars. Especially in today's car market where cars are flooded with all kinds of tech. More things likely to go wrong. Even newer toyotas have been having issues where 10 year old models have not.

    Would be really cool if an aftermarket company made a setup to have a "form fitting" battery for the below compartment behind the third row, that could extend (probably double) EV range. It would make it so third row couldn't fold and probably would be a liability in the event of a rear end collision.... otherwise a great idea perhaps.

  • @USUG0

    My comment is the same as for any other PHEV. Make it with 1-2 electric motors correctly dimensioned for the size of the vehicle, and a smaller engine acting only as motorgenerator to hold the battery charge when needed, and a battery size of 15-25kWh. The overall efficiency would be even better, and potentially allow for the vehicle to be transitioned to fully electric.

    I don't like the all-black trim thing at all, but you don't have to have that option. Other than that, I've driven the regular Pacifica and it did everything better than a Toyota Sienna (other than maybe long term reliability), which is a really old design. Too bad about not having the seat to stick in between the second row buckets. Also would prefer fewer controls on the screen and more buttons and switches, and a lever instead of the Jaguar style knob for the shifter. (Ford is also going to knobs with the next Escape). But 30 combined EPA mpg vs 22 is a lot better. Unfortunately on plug-in hybrids they don't list city/hwy mpg. They should list those (assuming no plugging in) like with a regular hybrid. The city mpg without plugging in is no doubt way better than the 19 mpg of the regular model.

    Alex, I am not sure how this can be your top pick with the poor reliability history. Do you not consider this when ranking? I get that if you sit down and look at numbers on a spec sheet the Pacifica compares very well to the competition, but you simply cannot put the reliability aside. NHTSA has recalled the 2019 model twice already for electrical problems. Based on passed years of this model the predicted reliability is on the very low end of the scale (bad!). Believe me, I wish American auto companies would produce a great Minivan, but I have to say it is irresponsible on your part to make it your top pick. As a side note, on the comparison you marked reliability as a PRO for the Honda Odyssey. This also is a misconception as since the 2018 redesign year the vehicle has actually been unreliable, with a not so note worthy NHTSA recall of 11 times, including major engine recalls. I mean my $45K has to go to the Sienna, as aged as it might be.

    Excellent review. Many pros and cons regarding hybrid power, but at this time in the development of ICE and EV systems, the modern plug-in hybrid system is a solution for getting the best of both technologies. Expect to see hybrid vans from Toyota, Honda, & Kia. The great unknown about Chrysler products is their reliability and dealer service issues. Verifiable facts should outweigh opinions and internet tales, but there is no excuse for producing an unreliable car. The complexity of modern cars does contribute to problems, but as the technology evolves and improves with each generation we can hope reliability will become very close to 100%. If I was in the market for a multi-purpose people & cargo mover I would sure consider the Pacifica hybrid.

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide I was shopping for a Pacifica last summer in NYS and ended up buying on huge discount a Touring L. Chrysler offer no incentives to buy a hybrid. The dealer have only fully loaded versions that cost 48+ before tax. If you add tax (8-10%), we are taking about $52K before NYS incentives of $2K, which will end up with $42.5K after $7.5K federal credit - both are after tax incentives. There are no attractive loans or trade in offers that would go with it. If you go with a non-hybrid version, you have huge discounts and many offers and incentives from the manufacturers and from the dealers. I paid less than $34K for an 8-seater. There are even better deals if you want to lease. FCA and its dealers have no intention to forward to you the tax credits :-(

To complicate matters, it’s a hybrid meaning that once it breaks, nobody can fix it except Chrysler dealerships. There goes your bank account.

    Excellent review, as always. I stopped shopping for a new car months ago, but still enjoy watching this channel.
    Was considering the PacHy, but honestly, Chrysler has such a poor, poor, poor reputation, I wasn't going to risk it. Maybe the PacHy is an exception, but when you hear for years about the troubles from Chrysler owners, and how poorly they're built from car mechanics, it takes a bit of a roll-of-the-dice to think a PacHy "you" purchase would be any different. How does such an ingrained corporate culture of mediocrity and poor quality/performance not leech into one particular model? If you want to hear a mechanic's opinion on Chrysler, check out Scotty Kilmer's 5 Car Brands Not To Buy video - ua-cam.com/video/CbqibbNaNuQ/v-deo.html . His decades of experience, looking under the hood at build quality and dealing with customer troubles, speaks volumes about what you're potentially in for when forking over good money (these minivans are not cheap) for a Chrysler product.
    It's really a shame more minivans are not Hybrids, or even better, All Electric or Plugin. They really are a better design for the family hauler. Much more capacity, a lot more comfortable (especially the third row), and a lot more functional. I don't get the SUV craze. It has to be based all on looks and perception, and not practicality. If you live where the roads are terrible (and parts of the US are getting there), or the roads are not plowed properly in the winter, then yes, you absolutely need the ground clearance and durability of a well built SUV with a good reputation. But for runs to the grocery store, school pickups/dropoffs, and soccer games, an SUV is completely unnecessary.
    I will buy a minivan next, once a Hybrid/Plugin/Electric from a more reliable brand hits the market. Right now, I don't feel like gambling ~40k, and cannot justify/feel good about driving a sub 20mpg on a better, all gas, product. However, my prediction, is that as autonomous vehicles become more prevalent, the minivan form factor makes a comeback. It really is a better design for a self-driving vehicle because it allows for various seating configurations. I think VW is onto something with their all-electric Bus concept newsroom.vw.com/vehicles/future-cars/official-the-vw-bus-is-back-and-its-electric/.
    Alex, thanks for all the reviews. I like how you're working in a Total Cost of Ownership projection when comparing the electric vs fuel models. I think TCO is an important factor in any purchase.

    • @rizzlerazzleuno4733
      @rizzlerazzleuno4733 5 років тому +2

      Sounds like you should wait for the new VW electric "bus", but wait till it has been out for a year before buying one. If an EV fits your transportation needs then that is definitely an improvement over a gas only vehicle. I agree that the future of autonomous vehicles includes more practical shapes........people will choose comfort over style. 🙂
